Rave reviews may help Spider-Man deliver holiday gift to theatres
The newest Spider-Man movie adventure won glowing reviews from film critics on Tuesday (Dec 14), and box office analysts predicted the superhero spectacle would set pandemic-era sales records at cinemas this weekend.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, produced by Sony Corp's movie studio and Walt Disney Co, stars Tom Holland in his third appearance as Marvel's web-slinging superhero and Zendaya as his girlfriend, MJ. The film opens exclusively in theatres on Thursday in Singapore.
As of Tuesday afternoon, No Way Home had earned a 98 per cent positive score from 65 reviews collected on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Supporters said the storyline would please old and new fans alike.
"Spider-Man: No Way Home is a goliath that feels destined to eat the world, a potent combination of the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe and nostalgia for what came before," said Esther Zuckerman of Thrillist.
Brian Truitt of USA Today called the film "a rousing entry that doubles as a love letter to the comic-book character, a film very much about second chances and a cleverly crafted reminder of that famous adage: 'With great power comes great responsibility.'"
Advance ticket demand has been strong, a welcome sign for US movie theatre chains, including AMC Entertainment, Cinemark and Cineworld that are still struggling to lure back audiences amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The holiday season around Christmas typically ranks as the second-biggest period of the year for movie-going, but recent box-office tallies are hovering well below pre-pandemic levels.
Steven Spielberg's West Side Story remake disappointed with US$10.6 million in North American ticket sales last weekend, prompting new questions in Hollywood about what it will take to get crowds back to theatres.
First-day presales for No Way Home were the highest recorded by ticket seller Fandango since 2019's Avengers: Endgame, the second-highest grossing movie of all time.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior box office analyst at Comscore, said he expected No Way Home to haul in more than US$130 million in US and Canadian ticket sales over its opening weekend. A debut at that level would mark the first US$100 million-plus weekend since December 2019.
"That will wash away much of the negative news that came before and hit a positive reset for theatres as we head into the box-office year of 2022," Dergarabedian said.

#101) Write stellar Christmas letter for 2020
This could have been a bigger challenge, since the year itself wasn’t consistently, well, stellar.  But the inspiration hit.  The letter is written, and now all we need to do is stuff the envelopes and get it in the mail.
Dear Diary, January 1st, 2020
I had the strangest dream this morning.  A microscopic cell grew so large it blotted out the sun like an eclipse, with only the glow from the corona visible.  People fled into their homes and stayed inside. Those that ventured out suffered one of two fates.  They either fell to their knees in a fit of coughing, or they started speaking one of two opposite languages and shouting at those people that didn’t understand them.  I looked at the calendar in my dream, and the date read ‘Friday the 13th’.  I’m not sure what this means, but I’m glad I woke up from that scary nightmare.  I’m really looking forward to 2020 because I think everyone will look back on the year as we near Christmas and, with 20-20 hindsight, be able to say “I can see clearly now!”
Fast forward to December, 2020.
Okay, so admit it. Some parts of this year definitely felt like a dream.  And for some people, there were portions of the year which seem nightmarish and they don’t want to reoccur.  But, life finds a path forward like a river finding its way to the ocean.  Something may come up to temporarily block the flow, but the water finds a new route, past new vistas, creating new opportunities for growth along the way.  I’ll give you three examples.
Case I:   The Newlyweds
I’ll admit, I was skeptical.  “You want to have a wedding in Colorado for two people with families from Ohio?  And you want to do this in January?  And you want to have an Ice Cream Truck for guests to walk up to – OUTSIDE???”  But with that famous 20-20 hindsight, I must say, Beth and Karl’s wedding on January 3rd in Denver was an incredibly wonderful event.  The ceremony (like the bride) was beautiful!  The sacrament was reverent!  The weather was incredible (mid-50s in early January) And the reception celebration was kick-a,, um, was a lot of fun!
Life seemed as delicious for the newlyweds as a scoop of Sweet Cow ice cream from the Moo Mobile.  Then Covid-19 hit Colorado, one trip after another for Karl was pulled from the COR schedule, and Beth and the rest of the Camp Wojtyla staff had to make the decision to cancel summer camp for 2020.  But they both stayed positive, turned an EconoLiner into an EconoLodger in their down time.  And in late Spring, life happened.  Quite literally!  The couple is expecting their baby in February.  Chris and I are looking forward to visiting them in Lander, WY to welcome our first grandchild.  We’re also looking forward to Yaktrax™ and a renewed appreciation for sub-zero degree weather.
Case II:  The Busted Block
As mentioned in previous Christmas missives, we really appreciated Steve’s job at the movie theatre.  He would bring home interesting stories about the guests - - - and free tickets for his parents!  When the reality of the mid-March stay-at-home order in Ohio set in by early-April, Cinemark told all their employees that they were not only laid off, but that they would not be guaranteed a job when the theatres re-opened.  Everyone would need to interview for consideration to be re-hired.
No summer blockbusters!  No steady income!  No free tickets for Chris and I! “No problem!”, Steve said.  He reached out to a few contractors and got himself a new career in home (and other building) repair, renovation, and remodeling.  He now has more hours “building back better” with his construction crew than he got at the theatre, earns more per-hour, and is already building (pun intended) his own clientele list.  Plus our own house has gotten some very nice updates as he’s practiced some masonry, plumbing, painting and shed-repair skills.
Case III:  The Move Up North
Late January was the end of Grace’s two-year commitment to Children’s Protective Services for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  She decided that she was going to move from Lexington to Ann Arbor and attend U of M for her Masters in Social Work.  So on March 13th (yes, Friday the 13th), we moved Grace out of Lexington, on March 14th she moved her furniture and goods to her new apartment in Ann Arbor, and on March 15th, Governor Whitmer closed down the state of Michigan.
Before the move (and the pandemic), Grace was worried about finding a job.  But Kroger was more than happy to have any willing body help with Pick List shopping, and Grace found herself waking up at 4:30 am to grab other people’s groceries.  Unfortunately, Grace’s brand new roommates became ex-roommates after six weeks since their lost jobs meant they had to change their living plans.  Undeterred, she found a new place to live with a lovely, retired U of M Professor, who got Grace connected with two other U of M contacts through which she landed two new jobs.
And with U of M itself using significant online learning, Grace opted to defer the start of graduate school till Fall 2021.  The additional time allowed her to decide that Ann Arbor is the place she wants to stay (at least for a while).  And with that, two other decisions followed.  In June, Grace welcomed Koda B. Nadler into the family.  Koda is an adorable young mother of four, a little over 60 lbs., and loves getting her back scratched and chasing after squeaky toys.  In December, Grace closed on a house in Ypsilanti.  The two big selling points for Grace?  A fenced in back yard for Koda to play in, and a chicken coop (which won’t get any chickens until Koda learns not to eat them).
Now, the purpose of this note is not to say take those lemons thrown at you in 2020 and turn them into lemonade.  In addition to health, economic and social concerns unique to the year, there were moments with a bitter note that can happen any year.  Dorothy Nadler (Mom / Grandma) passed away on June 22nd, after managing Parkinson’s for over a decade.  She moved into a Skilled Nursing Facility last October and was getting along pretty well.  But with Covid-19 spreading across the country, the nursing home went into lockdown.  Starting in March she wasn’t allowed to have visitors.  And while the virus did find its way into the facility in April, and Mom even tested positive the second week, she remained asymptomatic for an entire month.  A Parkinson’s-related infection sent her to the hospital in May. Once she recovered from that, she was released to a hospice center in Defiance, OH in early June.  She was able to have visitors every day, limit of two at a time.  Dad was happy to be one of those two visitors nearly every day.  Mom was focused on celebrating the wedding shower for Kelly Nadler (now Steffan) on June 20th, a goal which she accomplished.  We miss her each and every day, and are so fortunate to have had her with us for so many years.
But, as said earlier, life continues to flow.  In addition to Tessa, who Chris has been watching for over a year now, another energy-filled three-year old can be found at Chez Nadler once or so per week.  And when those two get going, it doesn’t matter what room I’m using as my home office.  My CareSource colleagues will ask “Did you say something, Dave?” on the teleconference.  I’ll say ‘No, it’s the toddlers’, and the others with children haunting their own home offices will give knowing nods.
Here’s hoping you, your families and your friends have a peaceful transition into a healthy and happy 202One.  May God’s love and joy warm your hearts and souls.  And, please, for those of you that wish for a memorable year next year, make sure to wish for happy memories.
With Love,
Chris and Dave
[and Beth(+1) and Karl, Steve, Grace, Zing, Dixie, Koda, and the fish who I’m not sure we ever named] (old habits are hard to break)

New story in Business from Time: How Drive-In Movie Theaters Are Utilizing Their Space for Concerts, Weddings, Anything
Bri and Lindsey Leaverton had their dream wedding all planned out. In April, they were going to get married at a century-old mansion in downtown Austin, with their guests sipping cocktails on a veranda by the pool.
Instead, they found themselves 20 miles south of town, tying the knot at a drive-in on a dirt road surrounded by cows. A formation of cars blasted their horns in delight. “When our wedding planner asked us about getting married at a drive-in, we looked at each other and said, ‘That sounds insane,'” Lindsey says.
The coronavirus has upended countless minor and major life events over the past few months. While many of these plans were canceled, a surprising share migrated to the drive-in movie theater, where social distancing, via cars and pickup trucks, is the norm. These theaters have scrambled to pivot their entire business model in the face of disappearing film releases–and have unwittingly become catchall communal hubs across the country. “Drive-ins are being contacted like they used to be, for everything in the community,” says filmmaker April Wright, who directed the documentary Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the Movie Palace. “They’re hosting church services, weddings, graduations, dance recitals, concerts, stand-up comedy.”
Shifts to events like outdoor weddings and smaller-scale concerts serve as creative ways to stay afloat in an industry that was unforgiving before the pandemic: the number of drive-ins in the U.S. has continuously dwindled, especially as home and handheld entertainment command more and more attention. Now, increased costs, a delayed film slate and potential competition from pop-ups–the Tribeca Film Festival, for example, is programming drive-in experiences at beaches, sports stadiums and even Walmart parking lots–are making some theaters skeptical they can last through the crisis. “A lot of us are really struggling,” says Nathan McDonald, the owner of the 66 Drive-In in southwestern Missouri. “If [movies] continue to be pushed, I’ll probably close in late August.”
Tumblr media
Key Vision PhotographyThe Hounds Drive-In in Kings Mountain, N.C., has hosted more than 18 concerts, and included bands and DJs
Some 300 independent drive-ins operate across the U.S. They typically make most of their money during the summer, when students are on break and blockbusters roll in every weekend. But this year’s tentpole films, from Mulan to Wonder Woman 1984, have been repeatedly delayed, thanks to the continued closure of major indoor-theater chains like AMC and Cinemark. As drive-ins opened for the season, they first turned to throwback classics like E.T. and Jaws, hoping to capitalize on nostalgia.
Such films have produced mixed results for theaters. At the 66 Drive-In, the average number of cars on a given night has dropped from 225 to 120. “You can easily sit from the comfort of your couch and watch these films,” McDonald says.
Instead of waiting for new blockbusters to salvage their businesses, many theater owners have taken advantage of other event-space closures. “We’re trying to substitute those new films for concerts or comedy shows so we can bring in relatively similar revenue,” says Joe Calabro, president of the Circle Drive-In near Scranton, Pa. The stream of a Garth Brooks show, aired at hundreds of drive-ins across the country, sold out. So the Circle turned to local musicians, whose normal gigs have been stripped away. Chris Shrive, a singer-songwriter from Old Forge, Pa., opened his band’s show from the concession-stand roof. “To overlook 450 cars; to see people barbecuing on the tailgates of their trucks, laughing, meeting people parked 18 ft. away–it was awe-inspiring,” Shrive says. “This just might be the new normal.”
Basking in the crowd was Sherry Sakosky, who was seeing her first live concert since the start of the pandemic. “There’s been a lot of built-up frustration and animosity,” says Sakosky, who estimates that some 95% of the concertgoers followed proper social-distancing protocols. “To be out amongst friends in a safe manner and to be able to experience the same show with them totally brings the community together.”
In Kings Mountain, N.C., the Hounds Drive-In has also thrived in its newfound role as a concert venue, especially because artists pay up front to use the space. “They set up everything, we get our money, we get to keep all the concessions,” owner Preston Brown says. “I love it.”
His financial success has enabled him to turn his drive-in into a sort of commons. The Hounds has hosted dance recitals and pet organizations; it’s welcomed more than a dozen graduating high school classes free of charge. Students received their diplomas on the big screen as their families watched from their cars. According to Scott Neisler, the mayor of Kings Mountain, the Hounds’ active presence has resulted in a local economic boost. He also staged the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show there, in order to celebrate the holiday safely.
But a storybook ending for drive-ins might prove elusive. Their new, outsize role in public life has not always ensured their financial health. The Bengies Drive-In Theatre, in Middle River, Md., has opened every day of some weeks, with concerts, church services and more. But the theater is operating at less than half capacity to promote social distancing, and has taken on a much bigger staff to control safety and crowding. “The public thinks we’re a cash cow,” says Bengies owner D. Edward Vogel. “But it’s been very hard on us.”
Pop-up theaters emerging since the start of the pandemic, says Vogel, are “breaking my heart.” He is particularly worried about the 160 temporary drive-ins arriving in Walmart parking lots–featuring films chosen by Tribeca Enterprises–in August. These spaces could further squeeze the independent operators. (A representative for Walmart did not respond to a request for comment.)
At the 66 Drive-In in Missouri, McDonald doubts he can make it to the fall, because of decreased capacity, a blank movie slate and people bringing their own food instead of buying from the concession stand. His financial plight is worrisome to David Fowler, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Carthage, Mo., who has been holding services from the snack-bar roof every Sunday, to growing crowds. His congregation appreciates seeing fellow worshippers in person, as opposed to sitting at home alone. “It’s a bit of Americana I’d hate to see lost,” says Fowler.
In face of such hardships, drive-ins fight on for survival. In Buda, Texas, Doc’s Drive-In has housed graduations, soccer watch parties and two weddings, including the Leavertons’. In April, 45 cars rolled up on each side of a dirt-road aisle. The couple, who paid $4,000 to book Doc’s, swapped heels for boots and stood on a rickety stage, swatting away june bugs as an officiant married them from 6 ft. away. “It turned out the wedding we had was way, way better than anything we could have dreamed of,” Lindsey says. After the ceremony, Airplane! played on the big screen.

I SAW DYLAN O’BRIEN
DYLAN O’BRIEN IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PERSON I’VE VER SEEN IN MY LIFE! I’m sayin that ‘cause I literally saw him with my own eyes last week and I will ty my best to describe how fucking awesome it was.
As said earlier, I’m from Brazil, more specifically from São Paulo and last week we had Comic Con Experience and Dylan came to talk about Maze Runner: Death Cure.
He was going to be at the FOX panel but we didn’t know what hour exatly he was going to show up at the Cinemark Auditorium. Fox would be there from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM so me and my friends got into the line to enter it at 3:40 PM.
We stayed on that freacking line for 2 HOURS and we weren’t even on the middle of the line, people were saying that he was goin to appear there at 6:15 PM, but when it was about 5:40 PM we heard people screaming his name and welcoming him inside de Auditorium.
I wanted to cry, seriously, I stayed there for two hours for nothing? I just wanted to see his face! So that’s when magic happened, a journalist said that he was going to appear at the Omelete’s Red Carpet (that was right next to the line I was) after the panel. Me and my friends got out of the line and stayed there waiting for him to show up and he did just minutes before.
I saw Dylan O’Brien with my own eyes and I can say that: HE’S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PERSON I’VE EVER SEEN!
I’ll always send my best energies for you all to at least see him the way that I did, it was worth it every second He’s very attencious an cute and fucking pretty.
Hope you get this chance

i will say this though about when me and my mom went to the movies tonight:
i sat next to a guy who obviously didn’t expect people to be sitting next to him.
Cinemark movie theaters have assigned seating now.  You pick out your seats when you pay, and all the seats are recliners.
He was in the back with some nachos and a sandwich since this is a long movie and it was about dinner time.  He was very apologetic about having a whole bunch of napkins in my seat.  I told him he was fine, don’t worry about it.  He was nice about the whole thing.
My mom offered to move a few seats down to make me more comfortable, and I told her A)  i was fine  and B) they were all assigned seating, we couldn’t take someone else’s seats.  Also I think they don’t work unless you pay for them?
but anyway he was totally fine, a complete gentleman, he asked if i needed the arm rest or cup holder we shared before just taking it, and I told him he was totally fine (since he had all that food and he had people sit next to him on the other side as well).
after the movie and we got home, my mom made a comment about how weird that guy was and how he was making weird movements and nodding to the movie
and i was a little sad she would say that, especially after seeing W//o//nder W//om//an.  The entire movie was about embracing love and hope for one another.
I let the guy have his space in the theater and tried not to notice his tics.  He deserved to enjoy the movie just as everybody else.
and while I wasn’t directly looking at him, i could see him trying really hard to restrain himself so he wouldn’t bother anyone.
i told my mom he might be autistic or have tics, but he deserves to see the movie too.  It’s just like when we saw the F//orc//e Awa//kens, and she was sitting next to two germaphobes who had napkins for everything and tried not to touch anything in the theater.  Movies like this are a huge deal and everyone wants to see the movie, including people different from you.
it makes me happy to see movies that hold so much meaning being enjoyed by everyone from all walks of life.
and i really hope that guy knows that any true fan of Wo//nd//er Wo//m//an, who loves her message of kindness, goodwill towards all, justice, and hope, will always welcome him.

‘Welcome to Marwen’ AR App Transports Fans Into Movie Scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Augmented reality (AR) has come of age and found its way into movie promotions.
For upcoming film “Welcome to Marwen,” Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation created an AR app to deliver “the first-ever 3D digital recreation of a movie scene.”
youtube
The film is based on the true story of artist Mark Hogancamp (played by Steve Carell), who is violently attacked and loses his memory. Hogancamp creates the imaginary world of a miniature Belgian town called Marwen populated by life-like dolls and action figures—and casts himself as a war hero.

“Welcome to Marwen” shows that “when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.”
The trailer for the new Robert Zemeckis film (director of “Forrest Gump” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy) uses AR to display a scaled-down recreation of a scene from the film with intricately detailed set pieces and animated 3D characters.

The app, which is available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play, lets fans review the scene in a 3D model of a town square created by the protagonist to heal and recover. It also and enables users to snap a photo inside Marwen to share as a digital postcard while perusing photo galleries, character bios and behind-the-scenes content.
As Hogancamp constructs a new life with pieces from the past and the AR present, he transforms to Captain Hogie, a World War II fighter pilot and gathers strength to carry on in the non-augmented real world.

The AR app “lets viewers see scenes from different angles and pause the action to take snapshots in two aspect ratios, as Carrell’s character does in the movie,” reports Mobile Marketer. “It combines a computer-generated reality with a smartphone user’s real surroundings to dramatize the movie’s themes and introduce key characters to movie fans ahead of the December premiere.”

Universal created a Jurassic World Alive AR game on Facebook for the DVD release of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

And Sony Pictures is promoting “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” with a mobile web AR experience that requires no app download.
“Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Rampage” have also released AR apps as marketing support, notes Mobile AR Reality News.
Thomas P Caudell, a Boeing engineer coined the phrase “augmented reality” in 1990, but arguably, the first concept of augmented reality occurred in a Frank L Baum novel written in 1901 where electronic glasses mapped data onto people and was called a “character marker.”
AR has come of age and found its way into movie promotions—in this case, an augmented reality within an augmented reality.

CORONAVIRUS FALLOUT: Churches Still Opened For Easter, VA Pastor Dies From COVID-19 + Coronavirus Curve Flattening In Some Cities + Cinemark Needs Bailout
There’s much to discuss with everything that went on over the weekend during the Coronavirus pandemic. More inside…
Rev. Tony Spell (above) of Life Tabernacle Church in East Baton Rouge Parish – who previously said he’s not too much concerned over the pandemic – held an Easter service yesterday where reportedly over 1,000 churchgoers were in attendance. SIR!
According to TMZ, Rev. Spell – who has previously been arrested for hosting gatherings over 10 people - welcomed 1,345 people to his church to celebrate Resurrection Sunday. In fact, he claims Sunday’s service attendance was higher than his usual turnout. These numbers come from Rev. Spell. It’s unclear how many people were actually in attendance as the count is based on what Rev. Spell shared with the publication.
Rev. Spell had the cameras rolling during his Easter Sunday service, but the cameras rarely showed the people in the audience. According to the site, the cameras focused mostly on Rev. Spell, but the site claims you could hear more than “10 people present.”
Sighs…
Last week…
youtube
Rev. Spell told TMZ that his followers would happily die from the virus if it meant they could attend his church services in person. Peep the clip above.
Cops didn't arrest him following the service. It's reported they're currently building a case against him for the District Attorney.
While Rev. Spell is still holding face-to-face services, one pastor in Virginia lost his life doing so...
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Bishop Gerald O. Glenn, the Founder and Pastor of...
Posted by The New Deliverance Evangelistic Church on Sunday, April 12, 2020
A pastor in Richmond, VA has lost his life due to COVID-19, weeks after hosting a packed Sunday service.
It's reported Bishop Gerald O. Glenn of New Deliverance Evangelistic Church has died after contracting COVID-19. His wife, Marcietia Glenn, also tested positive for the deadly virus. The New York Post reports in the pastor's last known in-person service, Bishop Glenn said he would continue preaching unless he was in jail or in the hospital despite the state's "stay-at-home" order. Sadly, his life ended due to the latter.
"I firmly believe that God is larger than this dreaded virus. You can quote me on that," he said during the sermon. "I am essential," he said about keeping the doors of his church open. "I'm a preacher - I talk to God!"
The church announced his passing via Facebook. Check it above.
Now, Bishop Glenn's daughter, Mar-Gerie Crawley, is urging folks to stay home.
"I just beg people to understand the severity and the seriousness of this, because people are saying it's not just about us, it's about everyone around us," she told local news station WTVR.
It's unclear how Bishop Glenn and his wife contracted the virus and whether or not they infected anyone else.
Sad.

Good news! It seems New York is flattening the Coronavirus curve, thankfully.
During Governor Andrew Cuomo's Monday morning press conference, he assured New Yorkers "the curve continues to flatten," and that "it appears we have a plateau."   Thanks to Mayor London Breed's swift response, San Francisco is also flattening the Coronavirus curve.
You'll recall, she was one of the first mayors to declare a state of emergency, which she put in place in late February. A few weeks after she declared a state of emergency, she banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people. Her aggressive and FAST decisions have helped the city's fight against the pandemic and things are moving towards getting better.
“All evidence suggests that they are doing much better, and the simplest explanation for that is that they did take social-distancing measures very seriously and they did it early,” said Emily Gurley, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, which has been tracking the global COVID-19 outbreak.
Oh, and don't even THINK about going to San Francisco to celebrate 4/20 during the height of the pandemic. You will go to jail. Peep her message above.
In movie news...
After laying off 17,500 hourly workers and furloughing half of its corporate employees, Cinemark - the nation's third largest movie theater chain - also need a bail out - just like AMC Theaters.
The company is reportedly selling $250 million worth of debt securities via senior secured notes and will use the net proceeds of the proposed offering for general corporate purposes, including further increasing its liquidity. The company said the debt will be secured by a first-priority lien on its leases.
“Cinemark’s priority as it navigates through this uncertainty is to ensure that the company will be able to once again open theatres and employ our global team members,” CEO Mark Zoradi said last month in a statement announcing employee wage cuts. “I look forward to the day in the hopefully not-to-distant future when the Cinemark team can once again welcome guests to enjoy the immersive moviegoing experience we offer at our theatres.”
Here's the latest:
Studios have pushed many of their upcoming releases back until later in 2020 or 2021, meaning that the summer blockbuster season will essentially be a wash. That’s catastrophic for the movie business, which makes more than half of its revenues during the summer.
Some chains, such as AMC Theaters, appear to be on the verge of insolvency, while others are hoping that the federal stimulus bills will help them secure loans that they need to remain in business. Cinemark has furloughed employees and shut down nearly all of its nearly 350 locations nationwide. CEO Mark Zoradi and Cinemark’s board of directors will forgo their salaries during the crisis. Cinemark had a debt load of $3.4 billion at the end of 2019.
Yeah, it looks like movie-going as we once knew it may never return.

A Decade at the Movies: An Analysis
Tumblr media
Over the past decade, from January 1, 2010, until December 31, 2019, I made 453 trips to the movies. That equates to 45 movies a year and about one trip to the theater every eight days. This is only counting movies seen in theaters mind you, new movies seen at home or streamed aren’t counting. To the mark the end of this decade, I wanted to do a deep analysis of the movies I saw, when I saw them, where I saw them, how I saw them and what trends could be derived from the data.
In those 453 trips to the movies, I only saw 441 new movies, since there were a handful I saw multiple times including Fast Five (2011), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), and Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018). Not to mention the six movies I saw as a part of the Avengers marathon in 2012, all of which I had seen in theaters already. Strangely enough Fallout in 2018 was the first time I saw a movie in theaters for the second time since 2013′s Catching Fire almost five years earlier. At the point in time, my need or desire to see things multiple times in theaters had almost disappeared.
Looking back at all the movies I saw over the past decade, there are a handful of movies that jump out at me now that I don’t remember in the least including Monte Carlo (2011) starring Selena Gomez, The Vow (2012) a Nicholas Sparks wannabee drama starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, Enough Said (2013) featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini in one of his last roles, and the thriller The Perfect Guy (2015). I remember these movies now, but seeing their titles on my decade-long list of movies, I honestly had to look them up to figure out what they were. And who could forget the two-month, six-movie stretch in 2015 where I only saw movies that started with the word “The”. From The Gift to The Man From U.N.C.L.E. to The Martian to The Walk.
Though the average number of movies seen in a given year over the past decade was 45.3, the actual number varied from year to year with a high of 62 movies in 2013 and a low of 27 movies in 2017. Both this high and low are easily explained away by an over excess of free time present in 2013 and with 2017 being the first full year with a new baby in the house. From 2011 to 2014, I was averaging 58 movies a year which equate to a new movie almost every 6 days, more than one a week. While from 2016 to 2019, I only averaged 35 movies a year, one movie every 10 days or so.
Tumblr media
I saw movies every day of the week over the past decade, with a Saturday visits the cinema doubling its closest competition, Sunday. Saturday and Sunday together account for 56% of all the movies I saw over the past decade. Monday through Thursday accounted for a third of the movies I saw, with Wednesday having the lowest numbers of all. Probably due to federal holidays, I saw just as many movies on Friday over the past decade as I did on Monday.
Tumblr media
Similarly, movies were seen in all months of the year, with May edging out the rest of the calendar to take the top spot. Following by November and then, surprisingly, March. September brought in the lowest numbers of any month, followed closed by February, August, and October. In total, I saw twice as many movies in the three months of May, June, July, then I did in the following three months of August, September, and October.
Some months out preformed others. By ignoring May 2012, the month in which I saw six extra movies due to the previously mentioned Avengers marathon, the most productive month over the past decade was March 2011 in which I saw 11 movies in theaters including The Adjustment Bureau, Cedar Rapids, and Limitless. Over the past ten years encompassing 120 months, there were only three months in which I didn’t see a single film - October 2010, where work commitments made movie-going all but impossible, September 2016, my first full month with a new baby, and February 2017, a down month in an overall down year. Looking back, lots of good movies that I subsequently saw at home came out during the month of February 2017, The Lego Batman Movie, John Wick: Chapter 2, and Get Out, but none of them were films I saw in theaters.
I only attended three midnight showings over the past decade, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010), Thor (2011), and The Avengers (2012). Conversely, I had attended the same amount of midnight shows in 2008, just two years before the decade began. There are two compelling reasons for the lack of midnight shows over the past decade. Firstly, as I got older the desire to attend a movie at midnight became non-existent. And secondly, with earlier and earlier first showings for new movies on Thursday night, the need to attend a midnight screening is gone. Case in point, following 2012′s The Avengers, I attended the Thursday night first-showings of eight other films that were much much earlier than midnight, including five Star Wars films (after seeing both Star Wars films of the prior decade at midnight).
There were many opportunities for multiple movies in a single day, as occurred in December of 2013 with Frozen and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, November of 2016 with Rules Don’t Apply and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and in January of 2017 with The Post and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. There was also the three-day stretch in March of 2019 and another in November of 2019 where I saw three movies on consecutive days.
Where I saw movies over the past decade varies as well. During my 453 trips to the movies, I visited 41 different movie theaters. A vast majority of the theaters were in Florida, but there were some in non-Florida cities including Atlanta, Little Rock, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver. Understandably so, almost two-thirds of all the movies were seen in one of my two local theaters, a Regal and a Cinemark, with the Cinemark alone accounting for more than 40% of all the movies. This is due to the Cinemark, while further away from the Regal, offering morning showtimes over the years, and more recently luxury recliners and reserved seating. My third most visited theater is a Regal in South Florida where I lived at the start of the decade and I have only seen one movie there since summer 2012. Those three theaters which I have visited 180, 104, and 47 times each, account for almost 75% of all the movies I’ve seen over the past decade.
Tumblr media
During most of the past decade, 3D continued to be a factor with a little over 12% of the films I saw in theaters being presented in that manner (56 total films). However looking back at the last three years, I only saw 5 films in 3D. Movie seen over the past decade on a large format screen (like IMAX or XD) accounted for 13% of the total movies seen (61 films), however, 21 of those trips were in the last three years, more than four times 3D films over the same period.
As we enter a new decade, more movies are being released straight to streaming services, new theaters are being opened with new innovations in the movie-going experience being developed. The how and where we watch movies is changing, but nothing we will be the experience of when the lights going down and the projector turning on and being transporting to new worlds across space and time. That is the power of cinema, and that will never change.

I will be making my oscar picks right here in a post Saturday morning or early afternoon. Onto the films! Tonight I got to see La La Land and Moonlight. Two very different films, but both deserving of being nominated for best picture. La La Land stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. I don't know what it is about those two but they work great together. Other people thought so too because they were both nominated for best actor and best actress. The film is a tribute to films of the past with its bright costumes and backdrops as well as the singing and dancing numbers. Someone took my thought that they don't make movies like they used to and ran with it. Everything in this movie is very pleasing to the eyes and the music is fantastic. This is definitely a movie for the senses. Director Damien Chazelle did a great job and received a best director nomination. Overall the performances of our stars are very good. Ryan Gosling is handsome as always but isn't here just for his looks. You see him put a lot into this role, and he even learned how to play the piano! He is a very good pianist and you would have no idea he had to learn for this part and didn't know how to before. His singing is good for someone who doesn't do it regularly and his dancing is nice as well. A very solid performance. Emma Stone is her quirky self as always but is good in this role. She never gets too awkward or silly as she has in other roles and puts together a very nice performance. Her singing is surprisingly good as well as her dancing. She has a great solo near the end of the movie. She also mastered giving an amazing look with her eyes. She doesn't have to say anything at times and you see what she is saying just with a look. I like her a lot but think silly roles will always be where she belongs. I don't know if I'll ever fully buy into her being a top leading lady. To recap, the movie was a visual feast. The music was amazing and the performances were very good. I think it was a little over hyped but at the end I really enjoyed it. A definite must see. Moonlight is a film I knew nothing about going into. It is a real inside look into what life can be like in the ghetto, how that can affect your life and what happens when people are pushed too far. The story takes place in three parts. Each part seeing a period of our main characters life. First as a young boy, then a high schooler, and finally a grown man. Throughout each part we see how hard life can be and how the streets can make you who you are. All three performances of the main character (Chiron) are great, especially the young man that plays the high school age Chiron. You see him as he goes from getting pushed around to finally pushing back. The actor Mahersala Ali earned a best supporting actor nomination for his role as a drug dealer and mentor to Chiron as a young boy. He is very good in this role and definitely stood out. He takes full attention while he is on screen. Naomie Harris earned a best supporting actress nomination for the role of Chiron's mom. You see her go from a mother with a drug habit, to one that is clean and full off regrets. A difficult role that she plays wonderfully. Director Barry Jenkins received a best director nomination. He definitely knows how to craft a scene and build a moment. To recap this was a very good movie and a great look into how hard life can be on the streets. The ending left me wanting more and left me to fill in some blanks. Overall a very good movie and one that you should see. So that's it. My thoughts on two of the nine best pictures. Look here next time as I talk about Fences and Arrival.
