this is a specific type of family portrait, an al'luimaxa photo, the specialest boy himself plus the father and other children she left behind. Since Levis remarried his new wife and kids get to be included since they are the same family but they get obvious supporting roles.

the fact their sect IS accepting of medical science is something important to note. Hy'Vaens saying "this must be a curse, I've done something wrong and I've been cursed for my sins" when his thyroid crashed and not seeing a doctor until someone higher up said "no that sounds like a thyroid problem. you should see a doctor" is not a normal thing for their sect. Something is changing in the attitudes of their sect and in the religion at large. Vaens is more conservative than Levis and has a far more loose idea of what "the time and place to wield the sword" means.
