Do you have any tips for learning a language I am a native English speaker but I am interested in learning Spanish and or chinese. I did an intensive Spanish course for one month in Spain but that was only to get a beginners certificate (A1) do you have any language learning tips for self teaching.

Hey! It’s amazing that you have decided to self-learn a language. I know it is something fun and new and exciting but it can also be challenging. I’m going to tell you about some of the things that helped me learn my target languages.

Firstly, stick to the basics when you are starting. Don’t feel that you have to know the language like a native speaker does. Don’t feel that you have to know everything, because you are going to get stuck. Begin with learning topics like how to greet, numbers, family, colors; and you go on and on until you built your way up.

Embrace your mistakes. Even if you feel like giving up, try again. It may sound cheesy but our mistakes allow us to truly learn. Don’t be ashamed of them, laugh it off and continue. Something that has helped me a lot, mostly with writing is that when you spell something wrong, you write it and write it and write it, until you get it right. And don’t get rid of your mistake! Instead, leave it there and put a cross and explain on the side why what you did in the first place was wrong.

Set yourself some goals. Don’t sit down and be like “I’m going to learn Spanish today”. Instead, you could create a calendar and chose your topic, what you want to learn from it, and how long will it take. And after you finished revise! Revising is always key to learning.

Practice a little bit every day. It may sound dumb, or maybe repetitive, but it is true. Practicing every day helps you with your memory and helps you move onwards easily. Practicing can go from reading, writing, listening or speaking. 

Reading: With Spanish you may find it easier because of the use of the same abc; and it’s all a matter of going step by step. If you don’t understand a thing, don’t worry. Get a highlighter, a dictionary, a notebook, and get to learn some words! (If you decided to learn Spanish, I recommend the dictionary of “La Real Academia Española”). With Chinese, it will be hard. I’m not going to lie. You are basically changing everything you knew about letters. So start with something very easy; I have been studying Chinese for a little more than a year and I still read things for children. 

Writing: Do it every single time you can. After you finished an assignment at school, or when you are waiting to go somewhere. Writing whenever I had time has helped me a lot. And by writing I don’t mean paragraphs, I mean words and phrases and quotes. 

Listening: You can get better at this skill by following your interests! Music and movies for example. Find music in your target language and listen to it. Try to learn it if you can! With movies, you can pick one of your favorite movies and try watching it in the language that you want to learn (with subtitles at the beginning of course). I am a native Spanish speaker, and when I was young and learning English my teacher made us watch Wallace and Gromit and it really helped. 

Speaking: Speak to yourself, even if you look crazy, because it will make you feel more comfortable in what you are saying. Also, if you have a family member or a friend that speaks that language ask them to help you and try to maintain a conversation. Another important thing that has helped me with this is YouTube; when I don’t know how to pronounce a certain word I don’t want to say it because it might be wrong, and at the same time I don’t want to pretend that I know something that I’m not sure about. If you look up in YouTube “How to pronounce x” there is a high chance that it appears because there are a lot of channels dedicated to how to pronounce words in another language.

Have a notebook, or several notebooks. And don’t be afraid to be messy on them. As a part of the Studyblr community I had found myself trying really hard for my learning notes to be pretty so I could post them. Then I realized that I had a bunch of beautiful notes that I didn’t even use!

Also, don’t be afraid to use the internet. The internet is your friend now. Find reliable pages, dictionaries, and videos that will help you understand better. Look for places that have games, and examples and stories too.

Another thing is learning apps in your phone. Yeah, it may be true that you may not learn as much as when you do when you sit and study; but when you are on your way somewhere, sitting in the bus, or waiting for someone, this apps are a good way for time to fly by and still learn. I downloaded a new app and I was learning about food and the app repeated so much “面包” (bread) that I ended up learning it any how. 

The apps that I use to learn Chinese are: Duolingo, HelloChinese, ChineseSkill and Drops. And I really recommend them. Some of them have limits but they are really good!

Moreover, you can habilitate more types of keyboards in your phone (if you can of course). In my IPhone I currently have 5 keyboards.  English, Spanish, Emoji (of course), and two in Chinese (one that lets me write the characters with my finger (Chinese Simplifed Handwriting) and one with letters (Chinese simplified Pinyin Azerty)). Thank to this, I can entretain myself by writing what I remember and it corrects your spelling mistakes.
