Characters for lip syncing and finally choosing what audio I’m going with!

after a solid 30 minutes of sitting at my desk listening to all the clips an unhealthy amount, I picked the one about time! Why? Because the woman talking sounds like an absolute nut job and i love it. I’m actually concerned that I didn’t pick it immediately, but hey, we’re here now and that’s what’s important.

Character 1

I wanna go for an Iris Apfel and Professor Trelawney kinda vibe because I thought they best fit the kind of mad woman sound that the character in my chosen audio was giving me. This was my first sketch up accompanied by a few inspiration pictures I nicked off google images.

I’m proud of it don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think it’s the most suitable. I’m not the best at 2D digital by any means (soz, stop motion is just where my heart is at), so if I go for something this complex I know for a fact I’ll continuously put animating off because I know it’ll take me a seriously long time. I really need to go for something simple yet powerful, and this lass is not it.

So I tried again

I really like this one, and looking back on it now I’m typing this up a week later I regret not picking it?! I just had this late night breakdown that I was going too easy by just doing simple human characters so completely changed it. But anyway, here’s an evaluation of this lass.

I did some serious simplifying from my first design, took out any unnecessary details but still stuck to the base aesthetics. I can definitely see this variation being way more easy to animate with although she does look a bit younger than I was kinda aiming for?? If I didn’t have the regrettable decision to re-change my design, I think I would’ve swapped the pinafore for something that a lady with some more years would wear, I think it just looks a bit too school girl like.

Here’s the design after my breakdown about thinking my work was too boring and predictable:

I ditched the collared thing with the pinafore to try and tackle that age issue, but overall I think she’s a solid OK. I like the colours a bit more and I will admit that this design is more interesting to look at. To be honest, I’m 100% getting too into the design which is so not what the brief is about so I’ll just leave it here.

Character 2

right, so my idea is that the second character will be some kind of therapist-esk thing, but really bored and not even paying attention because he’s just had enough of this crazy lady’s ramblings.

I tried to make him as dreary looking as possible, but still fit in with the bright colours of my first character. I actually like how he turned out, I think he matches the vision in my head to a reasonable extent. With the simplicity, I’m hoping he’ll be easy to animate.

Conclusion

I have literally done the thing we were told not to do and gotten too wrapped up in the design, so sorry Kris, I’m a wild rule breaker. I think that as long as I stick to the simplicity then I should be good to go, I haven’t done 2D in absolutely ages so I need all the assistance I can give myself here.

The next step is to crack on with the animatic, I promise I won’t waste more time pointlessly drawing out designs, but saying that, I have made a style frame anyway.

Yes, I know it’s useless and yes, I do regret spending my valuable time on it, BUT it made me realise that I’m so gunna slightly blur the second character during the actual animation because I’m loving the look of depth.
