"home is where i wanna be, but i guess i'm already there" fic inspirations & fun facts (if anyone was curious)
INSPIRATION
-eternal sunshine of a spotless mind -talking heads, miracle musical/tally hall, lemon demon, they might be giants -a fucked up nightmare i had once -fight club -the truman show -the original game and ultra deluxe, of course (in addition, 90s-2000s desk job aesthetic and liminal spaces, throw in a bit of existentialism as well)
FUN FACTS -the adventure line soda in chapter 1 was specifically inspired by the omega mart commercials. i wanted it's ingredients to be comprised of regular soda things, office supplies, and other weird ingredients to sort of insinuate that the narrator just took whatever was in his office and ground it into something resembling a liquid. also "transglutiminase" is a fancy word for "meat glue".
-everyone seemed to pick up on this, but the specifications that stanley's birthday cake is a black forest gateau in chapter 1 is a reference to portal. i thought this was fitting since tsp was also created using source, and the thought of the narrator finding the cake model from portal to use for the birthday story was funny to me.
-i wrote the whole birthday party scene before i ever heard the narrator's cut voice lines, one of which being "where were all of his coworkers? oh, i don't know. how about; they're throwing a surprise party for him, for all of his button pushing."
-stanley's birthday is september 19th because i just thought that date suited him. in retrospect, i sorta regret explicitly giving him a birthday because it ruins the emersion of this "timeless" place, but it's probably not as big of a deal as i think it is.
-initially in chapter 2, stanley and the narrator would have played dark souls 2 as well as five nights at freddy's and animal crossing new leaf (for game diversity) but i figured having two wildly different games about animals (one being a cute life sim, and the other being a horror game) was enough. also i was tired.
-both the narrator and curator can sleep, but it comes mostly through being mentally drained than being actually tired. they can't eat or drink, but can experience both from the aroma's surrounding certain foods.
-432 plays the piano in chapter 3 because (as everyone knows) they remind me of charlie from it's always sunny and imagining them playing the spider song cracks me up. initially the music segment was only going to entail the curator playing the violin, but i haven't seen 432 and mariella (or even curator at all) drawn in the musician au, so.
-the narrator's affinity for shrimp cocktail is based on his shrimp facts from the DOTA 2 narrator voice pack
-this isn't that funny or important but i wanted to portray the bucket as like a steve urkel or chandler bing "character" that has clapping and laugh tracks play whenever they enter a scene.
-i forgor to shout out my gravity falls reference in the chapter 3 ending notes. i wasn't stealing dialogue i swear i just thought it'd be funny cuz alex hirsch was the content announcer in ultra deluxe okay bye
