The Pale Blue Eye pulls a pretty neat final twist that I've always wanted to see play out in a whodunnit, but unfortunately it also executes that twist in the lamest way possible
#Kumari comments#The Pale Blue Eye#uhh definitely not making a spoiler tag for this movie#It's a decent time-waster if you like good historical costume design and a basic but atmospheric mystery#and also British actors doing charmingly awful American accents#Anyway‚ spoilers now:#after an okay faux third act climax it turns out that the mystery wasn't totally solved and the detective was the real killer#Which is neat! and I do consider it distinct from 'the POV character was the real killer' which has been done p famously before#but then his motivations are sooo booooring#he's getting revenge for his fridged daughter. that's it.#and she's literally just that meme of 'flashbacks of the action hero's angelic dead wife' but a daughter#It's honestly kinda remarkable to see such a head empty approach to the subject of SA in a fairly high-profile film in 2023#like there's a half-assed moment where the detective goes off about how institutions are responsible for their members' crimes#and by the end you can kinda infer that he was actually mad about the sex crimes#but that's basically it#meanwhile Nice Guy™ Edgar Allan Poe is gonna go on to marry his 13yo cousin irl so … maybe not the best counter to his peers eh?#idk. I feel like a more thoughtful director could've taken all the tasteless tropes and played on them ironically#but that would involve /intentionally/ making the male protagonists look kinda shitty ig#Kumari abuses the tagging system
