ughhh the internet is failing me

anyone have advice on cleaning painted wood furniture in a way that won’t damage the paint or the underlying wood? everything I’m seeing is either about ruining antiques by painting them beige or about trying to salvage an antique that has been assaulted with paint.

in this case the paint is a) very pretty and b) also antique and I REALLY don’t want to damage it but also I would like to clean the object in question and it’s like ‘I KNOW advice for this must exist SOMEWHERE but unfortunately ruining antiques has been The Big Thing for a while now.’

#I'm seeing soap and water and I may be willing to try that on like. a leg. to see if it hurts the paint.#but also it's fucking WOOD and using soap and water on wood makes my entire brain screech.#mostly because I was told REPEATEDLY as a child that you only ever use oil-based cleaning supplies on wood.#or you will fuck up the finish and the wood will be Very Sad And Dry #so like #it would clean it but also damage it probably? and I really do not want to do that?#I'm just also afraid to use most of my standard wood cleaning supplies because I'm afraid they might eat the paint.#which if that happens I WILL CRY.#babble tea (blacklist this for less chatter)#in other news 'DIY' people who paint perfectly pretty wood pieces Beige make my soul cry #wood is so much prettier than beige WHY WOULD YOU EVER DO THAT
