Your post got me thinking, I think Syrus is definitely good at many things but his issues don't really let him try or even enjoy things that aren't dueling-related. It makes me wonder what his interests would be if he didn't have so many issues....It also makes me wonder if he even would be a duelist at all if he didn't have something to prove to Zane.
Honestly the whole Powerbond thing could have backfire on Zane and completely shame Syrus away from dueling forever.
Wow sorry it took me forever to get here, you'd think with all the nothing in my inbox I wouldn't keep forgetting โ๐ญ
But no yeah, I think so too. I have a very personal connection with Syrus as a character, we're very similar in a lot of ways, and because of that I think Syrus would be a fair writer. Generally speaking, I think he's better with written words than spoken words because of his anxiety, especially early on in the show before he's able to work through some of that.
And we do see in episode 50 they're in like art class, and he does a little drawing of Magician's Valkyria that's actually really good for the average person and it's just adorable!
This to me screams potential talent! Retroactively realizing I've also headcanoned that he doodles on things like his notes and homework to help him think and concentrate like I do and I wasnโt even thinking about this when I decided that akskskks
I also think he's just generally smarter than his crippling anxiety allows him to exhibit in class in front of people, I know I had absolutely crippling classroom anxiety all the way up through college it was a real problem. And we know from a few points in the series, Syrus has a vast knowledge of YGO universe history, and honestly he gives me the vibe that he enjoys history in general independent of the fact that that was always my favorite subject in school ๐ญ But he really is interested in duel history.
Honeatly I think even without needing to prove himself to Zane and break out from under his shadow, he'd still have an interest in dueling, but he might not pursue it professionally or in an as all encompassing way as he does in the show. But also in the manga their relationship is fairly similar, but a lot less um... abusive on Zane's part. Honestly their relationship is so much healthier in the manga ๐ญ and he really does just want to be a duelist. So it's difficult to say in any definitive sense but I do think his desire to prove himself to Zane really does push him to lean so far into dueling.
Of course you can take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but that's a few of my thoughts on the subject ๐
