Ahhh that classic "refer to your royal advisor as 'chat'" move. Real smooth Laios.
This is the drawing I cried over btw. Yeah the one that made me almost bite my apple pencil in half? Yeah that one.
Huh... I genuinely just now realized that I overdid Laios's bulge 🧍🏽

"500 mora; and three answered questions."
He's not really sure what lead him to indulge the requests of a simple adventurer when he made his rounds around the city of freedom. Was it the simple need for currency? It couldn't be, he was better off with other commissions that Katheryne could offer.
Was it the desperation in your voice and eyes? You looked at him like a prophet, your only salvation, and perhaps in this context that may be true. You were but a lone adventurer and the way your weight leans heavier on one foot shows your struggle to those who have keen eyes like him, no other person wished to indulge your needs and you were getting desperate.
Or was it the three questions? Dainsleif have yet to hear such contractual obligations before, but it felt as tho it was the most important part of the agreement he took the moment you pleaded with that soft voice. Humble yet resolved, not letting him walk away without at least considering it once.
And so he found himself traversing the land of the wolves through a dangerous path, where you skip ahead with a gait of happiness, bubbly and energetic enough to surpass even his long legs. You hummed without consideration at the glee of finally having a companion, and he did not mind it at the slightest despite the attention it may bring upon your little party.
"First question," Dainsleif fleeted his gaze away from the horizon to turn to you whom slowed your pace to match his, head looking over your shoulder with a wide grin. "How are you?" So innocent.
He huffs in amusement, the most emotion you've seen of him. "You don't need to waste a contract question for such a simple question, you know," he stands behind you as you crouch down on a shrubbery filled with Wolfhooks. Your main objective for visiting Wolvendom in the first place.
You assured him that you meant your question in every way possible as your hands carefully pick at the herbs, wary of the thorns and the intrusive prickly leaves. Despite your attention turned away from him he knows you await his answer. Dainsleif hums to himself and stops—
How is he? What does he truly feel in this moment of his time?
A simple question yet risked for one of the three inquiries agreed upon definitely holds a deeper meaning. His train of spiraling thoughts halts upon the sound of otherwordly grunts and chants as he turns away from your still busy form (you seem very focused on your foraging) to find three Hilichurls approaching with ill intent.
Dainsleif squints at the impending threat before shooting a final glance to make sure you weren't looking. His arm glows blue as he raises it, power in the form of blue swirling mist surges around him - how are you? The feeling brings him back to vague memories of his past, of the energy rising through him at his expeditions with an old companion, of the thrill spent upon encountering the unexpected. Such thoughts are not vivid but the familiarity of what he is experiencing right now was enough for him.
Though he was sure that there were no camps before they went through this route.
"You asked me how I am," he spoke when you finally turned from the bush with an armful of Wolfhooks on your arsenal, confusion on your face at the sight of downed Hilichurls and the side profile of the bough keeper.
His cerulean eyes were fixated at his left hand that he repeatedly closes and opens for a few seconds, before he fully turns to you (your eyes did not miss the blue glow from underneath his cape, where his right arm should be) with a wisp of a smile, "I feel alive right now."
You reciprocated the gesture with a wide grin, "I'm glad to hear that!"
A majority of the wolfhooks gathered where given to the little Botanist Chloris, the seller of flowers, who looked relieved and ecstatic upon your arrival. Something Dainsleif took great notice of. Carefully handing over the berries and some which you had to pluck singularly from your companion's flowy cape, the little girl gave you her Valberries in exchange.
It was sweet and familiar, something Dainsleif took note as he accepted your offer of the fruit despite his none need for sustenance.
Your little chewing sounded through as you two settled on the humble camp you managed to setup with your supply for a single individual. There was a little hole in the middle for a campfire Dainsleif had made the effort to prepare knowing the coldness the night will bring soon enough, and your fragile form is not something he wishes to bargain now. Is that really the reason? Perhaps in the back of his mind, he was really just working on forgotten routines.
"Second question," his footstep at the edge of the camp halts as he turns once again, where you sat on the mat as tonight's bedding, hands flicking to remove the stray juices of the berries. He stood still in wait before he goes back to his mini mission of getting fire wood.
"Go on," he urged when you stood a minute longer in silence.
"Do you like traveling, Dain?" Easy enough, he simply said yes and left when you ended the conversation with a nod.
When he came back with the wood and tinder bundle for easy spreading, out of the corner of his eye he watched your hands work on the mortal and pestle as you grinded the remaining wolfhooks on your person. The fire started the moment he was done setting up the kindling and your face filled with admiration at the sudden and immediate spark, praising him for his quick work.
Dainsleif is both talkative and not, and at times he finds himself rambling to the wind. The moments of the night passed without much details until he found himself talking about his past adventures with his old companion, of the world they've seen together and the now estranged relationship between them.
His responses were sometimes cryptic unintentionally, and he apologizes when there are things about it that he couldn't answer simply because he could not remember. When silence struck after he finished his tales and meal, the beautiful spike in his eyes found yours gleaming despite the drowsiness pulling at your whole feature.
"I'm glad you're very fond of traveling. If not, I wouldn't have met you," and he wouldn't have taken the commission. Dainsleif's eyes flashed in recognition, finally understanding the meaning behind your second question. Somehow this little commission deal turned into a silent back and forth quip of him understanding past your simple inquiries.
Like a little game he muses on with his curious mind.
That night you rested with the extra comfort of his eccentric cape, something you needed more than him as he gazes over the clear night sky. His eyes silently traced the galaxy of stars while the sound of your whispered breathing accompanies his sleepless night.
The last question and that last of your very quick expedition came the next day at the cliffside overlooking the lair sealed by winds.
Your fingers were dusted by the violet paste of grinded wolfhooks long consumed the night prior, stained fingers gripping the thin and fragile stem of the yellow dandelion in its grasp. It was his great observation that let him realize the disaster that happened now but even his foresight could not prepare him for what has to come.
"Third question," his head snapped down to watch your ethereal face don a calm smile, the sun's setting light kissing your cheeks in the right angle that matched that of the clean clouds above. Your eyes silently questioned his unfocused gaze but he only shook his head.
Don't worry about it. "I know this last question would end the commission with you," your voice trembled in both fear and fatigue but Dainsleif didn't force you to preserve your strength like he should. "But I wanted to ask, maybe tomorrow again,
do you want to be my traveling companion?"
The hand that clutched the Dandelion found it way to the side of his mask, the petals brushing against his eyelids as he looks down at you with an eye. A ghost of a smile lingers on his lips as he leans on your hand.
"It would be my pleasure."
Life momentarily flashed over your orbs before you let out a sharp exhale and a breathless, joyous laughter. Relief overtook the tension that laid on your shoulders, and your hand would have dropped to the ground immediately if he had not gripped it on the last second.
"That sounds good. I've always wanted to travel the world," he pulls the cape closer around your form as your eyelids droop to a close. And he witness another breathe, "It was supposed to be today, but I feel really tired today, I'll rest early too if that's okay."
He rose from the ground with you in his arms, "I'll be here."
"Mmm thank you... good... night."
"Good night, little dandelion."
And perhaps that distant memory from faraway had urged him to invite and indulge, when he saw the same spark of intrigue and desperation, of the warmth of carefree days in front of him.
"But I will require advance payment,
500 Mora, and three answered questions."

okay so i'm really fuckin pissed now cause tumblr mobile sucks and deleted what i had saved to my clipboard so i have to retype all of this now (hello from future me: i'm coming back up here to say that i also added more to what i said originally so i'm sorry this is so long i couldn't help but infodump). but i find the mona lisa really interesting. she originally looked a lot different from how she looks now, but because of things like the amount of exposure the painting's had to harmful elements like people's breath and also the kind of glaze used on the painting which darkened it over time, it's resulted in what we have today. da vinci had an assistant who is believed to have painted the mona lisa too and instead of being displayed, the assistant's painting was stored away so it's in a much greater condition.
Tumblr media
this right here is the painting believed to have been done by one of his assistants. she's at a slightly different angle (although it's pretty hard to tell) and this is believed to be really similar to how da vinci's mona lisa would have looked. there are so many small details like her eyebrows and the lace on her dress and the curls in her hair that you can't see in da vinci's mona lisa anymore. it's widely believed that the model is lisa del giocondo, the wife of a wealthy silk merchant, and that it was commissioned to celebrate their new home and the birth of their second son.
da vinci also experimented with his paint a lot. another one of his paintings, the last supper, is also in pretty bad condition and is constantly being touched up, so much so that some art critics say that the last supper can't be considered one of da vinci's pieces anymore because none of his paint is still there, it all flaked off and was just repainted by other artists. part of that is due to da vinci's poor paint mixing, but it's also due to other things like a door being put in place under the painting, that room supposedly being used as a barn at one point, many people going in and out of that room, and also a bomb that went off near the building it's in at one point and destroying part of that building
Tumblr media
(a photo of the last supper, for reference) fun fact, it was painted that way with everyone on one side because it was originally in a church or something cause it was painted for religious monks, and it's supposed to make you feel like you're sitting there at the table with jesus and his disciples. other depictions of the last supper from other artists don't have everyone on one side.
and one more thing that's completely unrelated to da vinci: the whole breathing-on-the-painting thing being a problem and ruining the painting is something that happens a lot. like with the lascaux cave paintings in france that are dated to over 17,000 years ago. the caverns have been completely closed off to tourists to try and preserve what's left because the lights and breath and touch from people was ruining the paint and making it come off.
Tumblr media
(an image from the caverns) there's over 6,000 figures painted in those caverns, depicting animals, humans, and symbols. most of the images were painted using red, black, and yellow pigments that were painted onto the walls both with brushes and through a blowtube of some kind. there are paintings way up on the ceiling, too high for anyone to reach, so what the people did was put paint into a tube and literally just blow through it to launch the paint up

Of Wood and Steel-CH1.
So this story was originally inspired by this post from @tolkien-fantasy that I agree 100% with lol.
Tumblr media
So here is chapter 1 of my story, you can also find it on ao3 if you prefer reading there.
I do not own the canon characters, but I do own Elizabeth, Abby, Benjamin, and Thistle.
Part 2
Chapter 1- Coming home again.
Warnings- None
Word count-2,078
The song used in the story can be found here
Tumblr media
“Go Belstram I'll hold them off!” I yelled to the young man beside me, though we were so close, our voices were faint amongst the roar of our enemies.
“I can't leave you here Elizabeth!” He yelled back, stabbing yet another foe.
“You have to! I'll hold them off, you complete our mission! Now go!” I yelled, pushing further into the throw of enemies, if their attention was on me, Belstram could escape easily. My axe came in contact with enemy after enemy, one blow after another as I watched the crowd begin to thin, but it was not without price. My body began to tire of blocking blows from every angle, and just as I sidestepped one sword, I had to block another. But alas...A sweet sound rang through the air, one louder than the roar of enemies I found myself amongst...The victory horn.
“Not again!” One of the men cried out, all of our weapons lowering, the ones who had “died” stood from their fallen places upon the ground, some mumbling curses, some patting my shoulder and saying “good game”, yes, good game.
“Who knew capture the flag could be so brutal” my friend Abby or “Ava” as she was known in our larp group, said as she walked up to me, water bottle in hand.
“Well when we both want to win,I suppose it can get competitive” I laughed, nodding my thanks as I took the bottle and drank.
Benjamin or “Belstram” soon came jogging up to us while we made our way back to our camp.
“You did it!” Abby cheered, jumping into her boyfriend's arms.
“I had to protect my queen, if they would have gotten our flag, they would have gotten you” He replied before leaning down to kiss her.
“Please excuse me, your majesty, I must go before I lose my lunch” I laughed while making my way to the woods for our next game.
“Are we 23 or just 5 Elizabeth?” Abby called after me, laughter in her voice.
“I don't know, are we 23 or 15?” I called back before disappearing into the brush. Abby and I had been friends for several years, but it's only the past three years that I have been part of her LARP scene. The factions that usually partook in the event were the Orcs, Humans, Dwarves, and Elves…Abby, or rather, “Ava” is the Elvish queen, and though my character is only human, I am in the Elvish faction, though you will find other races scattered amongst the other factions, except the Orcs...Nor will you find any Elves on the Dwarf faction and vice-versa.
Games usually consisted of all out battles, Capture the flag, Raids, and my favorite...Quest of Glory. A game where the brave follow quests given to them by “NPCs” where they must battle a tiered party member before advancing...Why is this my favorite? Simple, as a high ranking party member, I'm the last they battle before going to Abby, and it's rare that people get that far, So I get to rest.
Climbing into my claimed spot, aka a 100 year old tree that resided on the oldest trail in our state park, I made myself comfortable and waited...Maybe drifting off into a light sleep.
“The journey's over; another's just begun
Beneath moonlight, but by the warming sun
I seek to hold you in sunshine or rain
Beneath the heavens, I'm coming home again”
The soft tune drifted along the wind that blew past, and though I hadn't heard the voice or song before, I chalked it up to just another player singing.
“So far we drifted, like ships upon the sea
Horizons fading, we lost to destiny
Storm clouds hover; our vanity like pain
Which held back the winds that bring us home again”
The song struck a strange cord within me, it was almost...familiar...and yet I knew that I had never heard it before. I watched as scenery flashed behind my eyelids, an open field of lush green grass, small mounds adorning it, and upon closer inspection, the mounds had windows to the houses that resided inside. Next a beautiful waterfall that ran alongside a breathtaking city, finely sculptured architecture making it stand out from the trees that dotted the land...And lastly...A mountain, tall and intimidating, yet the face of it showed detailed and beautiful stonework, two large statues of dwarves flanked the entrance.
“What are these places?” my mind wondered as I stared at the scenery in my mind, but my vision was soon disrupted by another voice, this one male, a soft sweet tone that spoke in only a whisper.
“amrâlimê”  the voice was so quiet, almost as if the person didn't want to be heard, or hadn't meant to say it. But the tone was so full of longing, and a promise of happiness.
“ Could I see, now, the swallows in their flight
Watch the moon dance on oceans in the night
The trees reach upward to help the birds to fly
And of the creatures who'll hear them when they cry”
The scene changed once more, to that of a deep and dark forest, a forest that seemed old as if time itself never touched it...And yet it felt very...Alive.
“We walk the hillside like lost souls in the night
And in the darkness, we're searching for the light
And in the morning, like freshly fallen dew
Much like a moon's breath, I'm coming home to you”
From the dark of the forest a soft orange glow took over, the crackle of a fire could be heard before I swear I felt a light kiss being pressed to my cheek.
“amrâlimê”  the voice whispered again, so sincere, so full of admiration, a tone that would be reserved for a lover.
“This journey's over; another's just begun
Beneath moonlight or by the warming sun
For I remember that if my heart be true
Just like an eagle, I'm coming home to you”
A snow covered landscape came into view, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. Not from the cold scenery, but from the dread that made my stomach uneasy.
“amrâlimê” The voice whispered one last time, the tone stained and faded at the end, as if spoke with a final breath.
“NO!” I yelled, bolting upward into a sitting position amongst the tree limbs.
“What?” I reached up and felt my cheek and the hot tears that rolled down it.
“No” I whispered, unable to fathom why a simple voice made my heart feel like it had been torn from my chest.
“Interesting...You saw it too” A female voice spoke, startling me and causing me to turn my head towards the voice.
“Who's there?” I asked upon not seeing anyone anywhere.
“I wonder...If you could be the one?” The voice spoke again, this time the voice came from the other side. Upon looking around, I was only met with the same forest I had been in...alone.
“Show yourself!” I demanded, standing up and balancing on the branches.
“Feisty one aren't you?” The woman giggled, the voice now in front of me as a woman stepped out from between the trees. Her pale skin was covered loosely by sheer green fabric that pooled around her bare feet, her smile and face were youthful, but the wisdom in her Lilac eyes made her appear older. Her short green hair did nothing to hide the long pointed ears, and I wondered how I hadn't seen this girl on the battlefield earlier, surely she couldn't fight much with that long of a dress.
“Who are you?” I asked, her smile only grew, and in a blink...she was in front of me. I stepped back, my hand grabbing at a branch to steady myself.
“W-What? How?”
“My name is Thistle, and I'm a forest Nymph, on a mission from Yavanna to find the one, and I think you are who I am looking for” the girl smiled.
“A forest...Yav….what?” The girl simply rolled her eyes at my confusion, as if everything she just said was the simplest thing that I should be able to grasp.
“You saw the visions did you not?” she asked, my mind flashing back to the different scenery.
“The different landscapes?” I asked, to which she happily nodded.
“Those are places in my world, if you were able to see them that means that you are connected to my world, and so far, you are the only one of your world that I have found that has seen them.
“How long have you been looking?” I asked, Thistle stopped for a moment, her finger resting on her chin while she thought.
“How old is your world again? I've honestly lost count of the years” she replied.
“Holy hell” I breathed, was this really happening? Or was I dreaming right now.
Wait.
“Whose voice was that?” I asked, remembering the soft whispers.
“Singing? That was me” she beamed before adding.
“I know, I have an enchanting voice don't I?”
“Well yes” I laughed
“But I meant the man's voice”
“Man's voice?” She asked, her expression just as confused as mine.
“Yes the man whispering that word...Am...Amra-lime...I'm not sure how to say it right.” I told her now beaming face.
“I don't know to be honest, but if you also heard a voice that surely confirms that you are indeed who I am looking for!”
“To do what?” I asked
“You have told me nothing besides your name, who sent you, and that you are here to find someone” I added.
“I...I don't know” she confessed, her smile falling.
“I was simply told to find the one and bring them to our world, that it was very important for our future” she replied, looking like a small child who had been reprimanded by a parent.
“Our?” I asked
“The forest”
“Oh”
“Please come with me, I know that you are who I have been searching for!” Thistle begged. I looked into her pleading Lilac eyes for a moment before looking around. Go to another world? My family, my home was here though...My parents...Who were always visiting family that lived out of state...My brothers who...Had their own families and lives...My friends who...I really only saw during our larp events...Oh…
“amrâlimê” That sweet whisper rang in my head, a promise that perhaps...perhaps there was a reason I always felt off in this world, perhaps my happiness was somewhere else.
“When would you like to leave?” I asked, turning back to Thistle, her pleading expression turned into one of pure glee.
“Right now would be good, just try not to scream” she replied.
“Scream? Why would I scREAM?!” I yelled as I felt the branch move out from under my feet causing me to fall backwards. I waited to hit the hard ground, but I just kept falling..Surely I should have hit the ground by now shouldn't I? So why hadn't...Suddenly a hard impact struck my back and I felt the air leave my lungs...Ah..There was the ground.
Opening my eyes I gasped for breath and noticed that I was next to the tree I had been sitting in...But I was not alone, nor was I in the same forest.
“Thistle...Who is this?” A large tree...creature spoke, his golden eyes bore into mine and as I found my lungs filling with air, I tried not to scream.
“I finally found the one!” Thistle beamed as she stood beside me.
“This is the one?” The tree asked.
“Yes Treebeard, I know she doesn't look like much, but she saw the visions..and also...she heard a voice from this world” she replied, whispering the last bit rather loudly.
“Hmm” the tree hummed as he reached out and grabbed me, the scream escaped me before I even thought about it...well..looks like I couldn't keep it in.
“Loud one isn't she?” He asked sitting me upright.
“Yeah she is” Thistle giggled before looking at the tree she called Treebeard.
“So, should we start her training now?”
“It would be wise” Treebeard stated
“After all, we only have a couple of years as of now according to Yavanna” he added
“Training?” I asked, finally finding my voice
“For what?”
“Your destiny!” Thistle smiled.
