they basically solved dyatlov pass
If you don’t know what the Dyatlov Pass Incident is, it was a group of hikers that were found dead in Russia and people thought it was aliens. Me being the true crime/unsolved mystery fanatic that I am, I was very pleased to see they basically solved it. The Smithsonian published an article where they used a simulation to test if a specific type of avalanche could have been responsible. The victims had injuries similar to a car crash, which made normal avalanches out of the question. There is a specific type of avalanche where snow slides down in one massive sheet, which would have hit the hiker’s camp at high speeds. The article posits that the more injured hikers were then grabbed by the less injured ones and dragged away from the campsite. What the article still has as unsolved is the fact they were found without clothes on. There’s a simple logical explanation, known as paradoxical hypothermia. This is a medical condition where, after a person is hypothermic, before death, they feel intense heat rather than cold. Pulling off clothes is very common in paradoxical hypothermia cases, and we all know that parts of Russia are freaky cold. So long story short it’s basically solved. Yay!
