In his favoured 3-4-3 formation, Manchester United could get better balance than in the current 4-3-2-1 that Jose favours. With this formation, Pogba would be free of his defensive duties and affect the game more in an attacking sense.

Having Conte who has had issues at two previous clubs; Juventus and Chelsea due to transfers would force the United hierarchy to back him extensively in getting the players he wants which would make the team stronger.

His unwillingness to play young players and his overtly passionate nature will count against him but if United were to go the way of getting another experienced, world-class manager, he could be a perfect choice.

The number one choice among bookmakers and fans, there would be a great uplift in positivity if the French legend were to be appointed in Mourinho’s stead.

Zidane’s playing career was a storied one as the elegant playmaker won everything there was to win as a player while wow-ing fans with his dazzling skills.

This brilliance is one that has followed him into his managerial career. Appointed as Real Madrid’s manager in the aftermath of Rafa Benitez’s sack in the 2015-2016 season, nobody foresaw what was to follow.

The job of managing Real Madrid is perhaps the most demanding job in football as it involves dealing with some very demanding fans, a volatile president in Florentino Perez and some of the biggest egos in world football in the dressing room.

Zidane handled all that perfectly and won 9 trophies in his two and the half seasons at the club including a record-breaking three consecutive UCL titles.

The arrival of Zidane with his glittering array of titles as a player and manager as well as his larger-than-life reputation would command the instant respect of all the players. Coupled with his exceptional man management skills, he would restore harmony to the team and the club.

(Why do some ladies dislike football?)

I never understood why mama (Uncle Joe’s wife) didn’t like it when we the men in the house were watching football. She displayed her discontentment with such distaste I had to always turn off the TV when I hear her voice or footsteps miles away. The only time I felt safe watching was when I watch with Uncle Joe though he’s had a lot of bashing from mama, his lovely wife of so many years.

I am now older and live on my own with my choice of channel and the option to watch football. I must say, I lost quiet some interest in football compared to when I was below 13 when I was habiting in my “hood” where I was born and grew up loving and playing the game. I have 4 of my toe nails extracted more than once from football wounds. I still have complications with the left and right big toes over so many years of not being present on the pitch.

Why mama disliked us watching football is quiet incomprehensible as of today. Even DSTV channels were subscribed with all soccer channels absent. Such a loss of touch with the game. I had to follow the game on radio, convo with friends, at the tail end of the daily graphic or sports highlight in the news. Tough love. I remember below my 13 years days, when it’s time for world cup or African cup of nations, Taylor, a co-tenant privileged with a colored TV at the time had his room full with men, and boys from far and near. The ladies …? Can’t say much, they always grouped and talked about how and why men love football and how everything comes to a standstill when its football season.

Get it…

Football is not just about 22 players stretching from one end of the field to other trying to get the ball pass the goalkeeper over a regular 90 mins period with 15 minutes break after the first 45 minutes. I do hear comments that converges to the point that football “bores” most women. But football should be appreciated as not just a coach with his technical team, reserve team, a couple of referees who are the on-field, spectators, or direct stakeholders of the outcome of the game, but a game with a lot of philosophies and perhaps some game theories and strategies being the unseen forces of football.

I am not a master of the game but my interest is what the benchwarmers are missing.

Whenever I watch football, I want to understand why I am watching. Until recently, I watched football so I could make meaningful contributions during convos, never really about the idea behind it.

To me…

Football is a game of strategy, a game of chance, a game of purpose, a game of optimization of limited resources, a game of cheer… I guess a whole lot more.

I say this because I’ve seen big teams or favorite teams dismantled by less favorite teams. I’ve witnessed teams win the league 5 times in a row, winning tournaments back-to-back and then to-back. What sets them apart? Was it luck or they got things right?

Take football as a corporate environment and you’re the project manager working with a set of human resources, given a target and you have to use technical tools and techniques to reach your target. Football is same. It’s about placement. Rightly positioning each player (your human resources) based on each player’s ability and strength and the coach will have to identify all these strengths and weaknesses.

From the game…

Take is as a duopoly market (a market dominated or say has two market players) where each firm wants to dominate and control the market. Both firms study closely the moves or strategies of the other so as to come out with the best response. Same happens in football. You win by outplaying your opponent no matter how strong they look or how they dominate, just take your chances. Ordinarily, there’s less chance for Belgium to eliminate Brazil in the one-eighth final of the 2018 world cup, but then what matters is the end result. In the round of 16, Japan played a dominated football getting everything right until Belgium got themselves together and scored a heart breaking extra-time goal to see them through to the next round. You may be the weaker one, what matters is the results.

Our favorite Jose Mourinho, a Portuguese coach is known for his defensive style of play which has produced results for him in teams such as Chelsea, Real Madrid, Porto etc. One can talk of Louis Van Gaal who has a philosophy for playing football and surely Sir Alex Ferguson who have all been successful in football applying strategies to football.

When you step out…

When you step out into different seasons of life, you realize what helped you succeed in one domain will not help you in another. What then do you do? You adapt. That’s the law of evolution. We see some players doing so well in their respective clubs, but do not replicate same in the national team. Others, the opposite is true. One attribute could be that, the kind of players that surrounds that player might not be same on the other hand. This has to do with adaptation in some cases. I would like to cite an example. Fernando Torres is player that played for Liverpool from 2007-2011 banging in 65 goals but just couldn’t replicate same when he moved to Chelsea from 2011-2015. Partly due to adaptation. That’s what football teaches and if benchwarmers see it that way, they will enjoy the game.

Just to conclude…

Football is more than chasing a ball, getting pushed and pulled, getting yellow and red cards, missing penalty spots and breaking the heart of fans, but a game of strategy, built on philosophies, moves, studying opponents, adapting and so on which could help in the corporate environment, marriage relationship, in economics, mathematics and science.

What the most Jose Mourinho ending at Tottenham would look like

The quintessential Jose Mourinho experience has a few key elements, beginning with a lot of promises.

So, Jose Mourinho is back in English football. This time as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspurs, taking over within a day of Mauricio Pochettino getting sacked. Just as he had quickly succeeded Louis van Gaal at Manchester United.

In his first official statement, Mourinho promised the fans: “passion, real passion. Passion for my club, that’s the way that I’ve been all my career, and I want to try, obviously, everything to bring happiness to everyone who loves the club.”

By now, everyone knows what the Mourinho (usually three-year) cycle at a club looks like. Things start off well. He creates a siege mentality at the club that unifies both the fans and players. He antagonizes members of the press and managerial colleagues, sometimes referees. The team overachieves because of his tactical ability and us-against-the-world attitude. Then the attitude wears on the players, and Mourinho is eventually sacked after a falling out with both the team and the management. The whole process is its own particular, exhilarating and exhausting cycle within a sport that is already emotionally draining.

Unless Mourinho has changed dramatically in his time away from management, Spurs are sure to experience all the highs and lows of the man in the next few years. Given that, the interesting question to me, a person who loves chaos, isn’t how the team will handle the Mourinho experience, but what would be the most fun way for his tenure with Spurs to end?

The way I see it, it has to start from something small and petty, which then escalates into a full-on explosion, embarrassing both the manager and the club. It should feel like the contents of a fever dream in retrospect. The most perfect possible version of events is one where Mourinho has a falling out with fan and club favorite Son Heung-min, which then leads to the collapse of his project.

Imagine this:

Mourinho’s first season is going well. He has Tottenham playing better than it did in the last days of Pochettino’s reign. The players seem reinvigorated. Harry Kane is scoring, and miraculously can run again (Mourinho can even fix shattered ankles!). Tanguy Ndombele is excelling and showing his world class qualities. The defense is uncompromising and compact. Spurs don’t concede goals, and win games with such energy and intensity that fans who were skeptical of Mourinho begin to fall in love with him. They finish the season well, and the next season seems promising.

The next preseason goes well and the team starts its campaign in great form. Everyone is happy. Mourinho is insulting referees and other managers, and the fans repost the clips all over social media, cheering on their manager. Then a small report comes up one day, maybe right before a Champions League game, that Son was late to training. The reason doesn’t matter. It was an accident, and Son apologizes.

Although Mourinho accepts the apology, he drops Son to the bench for the match. Of course, he and his supporters defend the decision by saying it was tactical, and because Son does sometimes come off the bench, that justification will be seen as a valid. But then the next match, Son once again doesn’t play. With the team struggling and needing help scoring goals, the striker doesn’t even make a substitute appearance. Still, there’s not too much concern. Mourinho makes a great case of believing in the players who were on the field. It seems sensible.

A few matches pass in which Son never plays more than 10 minutes if he steps onto the field at all. The team’s form begins to decline. Kane and Dele Alli struggle. Son continues not to play. It becomes clear to everyone that there’s something more to this tension than simply tactics. Reports are released, citing anonymous sources, that there’s a power struggle between Son and Mourinho. This perplexes fans and the media alike. How could this be? Son is one of the loveliest human beings. It’s unimaginable he would struggle against Mourinho for power.

This confusion will be valid. Son’s problem won’t be that he’s against Mourinho, but that he is the most prominent player who doesn’t buy into the cult of the manager. Mourinho will want everyone to be entirely loyal to him, and Son, wanting to do his best but believing that it’s bizarre to play each game as if it is a battle, will retain his independence. He wants to be happy and enjoy his football, and Mourinho will disdain him for that.

The results continue to disappoint. The fans begin chanting for Son during matches, and Mourinho starts to get annoyed at questions about the player in the pre- and post-match conferences. Now he refuses to even put Son on the bench, blaming a mysterious injury. Son, bewildered by the whole saga, casually refutes the injury claims through a small publication, which then infuriates Mourinho even more. The season ends with the team in a worse position than the year before.

The next season, the manager asks the club to sell Son and use the money to reinvest in the squad. The club refuses, because Son is still talented and valued at the club. Mourinho sees this as the club choosing the player over him. The club buys some players but they don’t satisfy the manager, who is still unhappy about Son remaining on the team and the fact the club didn’t buy all the players he requested. He begins to make public statements of his displeasure. The results worsen. Fans begin protesting loudly in the stadiums. Mourinho calls them ungrateful and defends his honor by pointing to his achievements.

Suddenly, he plays Son again in an effort to win support during the hard times. Son, because he hasn’t played in a long time, doesn’t do well. Mourinho mocks the player and everyone who called for his inclusion after another loss. Son requests a transfer before the window closes, and the club reluctantly obliges.

Son leaves thanking everyone but Mourinho. The other players are hurt by the departure and turn on the manager. They start playing badly on purpose to sabotage him. The manager begins to publicly chide his own players. The fanbase divides itself into those who support Mourinho and those who don’t. The fighting becomes so unbearable that the “One Club” song from years ago seems endearing by comparison. The results continue to be negative, and now the lifeless and pragmatic style of play becomes indefensible.

It won’t end with a bang, but there will certainly be a great Mourinho press conference in which he exalts himself while pointing out that, before him, the club has never had a true winner at the helm. He will put his trophy record against that of Spurs. He will mock the fans for not knowing how to support someone of his caliber because they have never had anyone like him. He will criticize Daniel Levy for being cheap. And eventually, his antics will become so unbearable that the club will have no choice but to put an end to his reign. Then he will leave with a wonderful severance package.

A few months later, an in-depth interview with Son will reveal the pettiness of Mourinho through their difficulties, and make it clear that the manager was trying to make an example of the player. Son’s words will be filled with regret. That regret will make fans even more angry at how he was pushed out of the club. Tottenham will spend the next few years going from one manager to another, trying to undo the damage done by Mourinho’s time there. And then Mourinho will be back on TV, giving great and nuanced match analysis, while casually mocking the stature of the club he was just fired from, joking that he had done them a favor by taking on the job.

Then he will spend the next few months advertising himself for a new job, and one day another masochistic club will inevitably offer him incredible amounts of money for the bittersweet experience. And he’ll take the job, with a promise of “passion, real passion.”

New signing Fred may well be the delicate balancing act Manchester United desperately need in midfield to truly get the best out of Paul Pogba, but if that proves to be the case it will be down to fortune far more than design.

The Red Devils’ swoop for the Brazilian midfielder, described by Tim Vickery as a ‘mini-Fernandinho‘, looks good on paper and could well turn out to be an incredibly positive signing, yet the deal highlights the most perplexing dynamic of the post-Ferguson era or more specifically the post-Gill era at Old Trafford – a completely scattergun approach to the transfer market that largely only reacts to the actions of their Premier League rivals.

That’s not to suggest there’s anything wrong with being pragmatic about the transfer market, especially amid an era in which prices have soared beyond control, but it’s a question of small doses – responding to situations here and there, pulling off the odd signing on the basis of a chain reaction. United though, seem to simply swoop for whoever’s available as long as their level of ability surpasses a certain threshold and in several instances, that availability is only because another major Premier League club has turned them down.

There’s an obvious logic to getting well-proven quality through the door. In fact, Jose Mourinho particularly appears only interested in players he considers to be very close to the finished article, who are experienced professionals and are prepared to operate as part of a team. But there’s an obvious downside too; great players still need to be put into the right team and the right context to truly show their greatness. That’s where United are really starting to fall behind their two main divisional and geographical rivals – Liverpool and Manchester City.

In fact, Manchester United have only signed Fred because City gave them a vacuum to fill – and Liverpool snapping up Fabinho, a much-speculated United target, less than a fortnight prior likely had something to do with it as well. The Citizens were hot on the Brazilian’s heels in January but eventually turned their attentions to other departments of team, particularly centre-half and the forward line resulting in their pursuits of Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez.

And in many ways, that change in tact highlights the key difference; because he so perfectly suits their style of play, City are still courting Mahrez, while longer to consider Fred’s strengths and weaknesses has lead to the conclusion that Jorginho would be a far better fit in the deep-lying role behind David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne.

United have moved to sweep up the pieces before anybody else does, and in fairness Fred – who Transfermarkt value at £28.8million – has the attributes to address a number of their problems in midfield. However, it’s becoming just too common a theme at Old Trafford. Romelu Lukaku was only signed after Chelsea had placed a bid for him, Alexis Sanchez joined because City reneged their interest due to wage demands, Zlatan Ibrahimovich was acquired because of his availability on a free transfer, and even the swoop for Pogba now feels as much a marketing exercise and intended statement of United’s ability to spend competitively as a genuine attempt to improve the quality of the team.

Once again, all of those players belong to the elite bracket and after some very questionable signings under Louis van Gaal, United desperately needed top-end talent. But how many of those aforementioned names have really solved issues within the team? Ibrahimovich was always a temporary solution, and one that despite his goals often slowed United’s attack down. Pogba’s proved a poor fit for Mourinho’s philosophy and the fractious relationship between the pair still awaits an effective compromise.

Sanchez has struggled to adapt and only added to the imbalance of a United squad that already included two talented left-sided forwards in Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford – if anything, the Chilean’s midseason arrival has created more problems than provided solutions. Lukaku – in fairness – has been the best of the bunch, adapting his game around Mourinho’s methods and providing a crucial foothold in attack.

Compare that, however, to how Liverpool have been going about their business. Jurgen Klopp has always enjoyed a natural knack for it, but he’s done an incredible job of picking the right players for his system and even being prepared to wait for them, accepting short-term losses in results, if a deal can’t be wrapped up quickly. Perhaps the best example of that is the contrasting ways Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson were brought to Anfield to rebuild that shaky defence.

The Scotland international’s minuscule transfer fee raised eyebrows just as highly as the world-record sum spent on the Dutchman, while the former was snapped up midway through July and the latter’s move from Southampton was eventually delayed by an entire transfer window – yet both have since become equally integral components of this Champions League final reaching Liverpool side.

Naby Keita will arrive this summer too after his move was agreed over twelve months ago, and that’s another deal which highlights how Klopp will move heaven and earth, wait entire transfer windows or calendar years, and spend whatever sum is necessary to land the players who are perfect for his way of playing.

That reflects in Liverpool’s and to an extent Manchester City’s performances on the pitch too. They play as an incredibly cohesive, incredibly intricate unit in which all the pieces seem to slot together almost effortlessly. While that’s partly down to Klopp and Guardiola’s impact on the training pitch, it’s also down to the fact every signing is geared towards their distinct philosophies.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are far more disjointed in their play, and that’s probably because none of their pieces quite fit together. Even Pogba and Sanchez seemed to be getting in each others’ way during their early outings in the same starting XI and even Nemanja Matic, one of the most proven defensive midfielders in the business, has struggled to provide the platform the Frenchman truly needs to flourish. Although Mourinho’s pragmatic tactics take the brunt of the criticism, perhaps the real problem lays in how this team has been assembled.

And there’s a wider question here too, of whether United are behaving in the transfer market how a big club should. They have the finances and the pulling power to sign pretty much any player in the world and any player who specifically fits what Mourinho intends to achieve. Instead, they’re walking around the superstore and dragging anything they consider to be elite value into their shopping basket. It’s a missed opportunity considering the money already spent, and one that will cost them dearly in the long run.

Arsene Wenger Was Too Beautiful to Last

I did not come by my crippling addiction to Arsenal honestly.

I’ve written about it before, but I only watch soccer at all because of a video game. Soccer was weird and effete when I was a kid, the domain of preppies and future Rotary Club boosters. It was a rich kid’s sport in a poor kid’s town and I had no time for it, right up until the moment I did. Well after it was feasible to establish any nascent sense of soccer aesthetics in me, I fell for the game, hard, after the 2010 World Cup.

You have to follow a team, but if you’re stuck in the soccer hinterlands of the United States and you’re starved for the sport, you have to pick one. And, no disrespect to my local minor league team, Europe was where the best was played.

The English Premier League was there and available, so I scoured the teams, looking for some club which had the obscure criteria I wanted. Didn’t want to be a frontrunner, because I’d grown up with fans who moved from the Cowboys to the Patriots with an ease which made me feel queasy. No weird money doping. Attacking, beautiful football (“beautiful soccer” doesn’t have the same ring, so I say neither out loud, for fear of sounding too affected).

Arsenal would fit the bill, but what really drew me in, what made me the drooling addict I am today with hundreds of dollars of shirts and an impulsive trip to New York to see them play live, was Arsene Wenger.

One of the first things which struck me when I was casting about for a team was just how repulsive the average football manager was. The EPL managerial fraternity was a sea of oafs, men like Sam Allardyce and ‘Arry Redknapp. Worse were men like Jose Mourinho (who wasn’t at Chelsea when I arrived, but who I quickly became familiar with), genuine sociopaths who were inexplicably egged on by an English press which dwelled on “mindgames,” as if this handful of awful coaches were actually just putting people on and not deeply fucked up.

But the Arsenal manager, now, he was different. Even his physical presence was markedly different from his peers. He seemed impossibly tall and thin, his limbs coming to sharp angles like a screwed up trapezoid made human. His French accent was gravelly and phlegmy, and he would pause before he spoke, making a famous “Look, uhhhhhhhhh” when he was searching for a word which would draw out forever in a sort of hypnotizing chant. Arsene Wenger seemed like some sort of delicate alien sent to Earth to teach people the delights of what soccer could be, a Martian philosopher-king in a puffy coat who could figure out how to turn Thierry Henry into a striker but who was flummoxed by the concept of the zipper.

I never got the Invincibles, the Double, or 1989. I claimed them later, well after I’d already done my duty as a plastic fan and picked my team. What I got, what my Arsenal was and is, was scraping for fourth on the last day of the season with a bunch of kids. It was the 8-2 and coming back with Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta, middling names who righted the ship when everyone said that they—we—sucked. It was laughing at Tottenham when St. Totteringham’s Day was still a thing, because it was actually way more fun when Arsenal sort of sucked, too, so the last day of the season meant huge stakes in that tradition. It was never getting into the round of 16 in the Champion’s League but always getting out of the group stage, a sort of warped callback to my childhood UNC basketball fandom, where we didn’t win a ton of titles but we by God always got to the Sweet 16.

This was Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal. Don’t spend too much, work on the philosophy of the game, and let these young men express themselves. That was the thing: we know he’s not a Pep Guardiola tactics obsessive, so the fact that these guys actually did sort it out for themselves on the pitch was and is amazing. It’s not the Invincibles, but in retrospect, those times the world sneered at the “fourth place is like a trophy” sound bites and the teams which prompted them are some of the most memorable of his tenure. Wenger’s way was the right way. It felt right in a soccer world even a relative naif like me could see had gone completely off the rails with money and graft.

Expectations changed the second Mesut Ozil, one of my favorite players, arrived. The FA Cups came, too, but everything else seemed to stand still. What had been overachieving became, objectively, underachieving once the oft-cited financial shackles were off. Because a team with players like Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny, and all the rest (yes, even Olivier Giroud) should be challenging for the title. Really challenging, not creeping up to second and then collapsing in a heap when the weather is slightly too cold or the fixtures slightly too close together.

A couple of years ago, on an episode of the Arsecast, the Irish Times’ Ken Early said (paraphrasing) that sensation isn’t a feeling, but a change in feeling, that you can only feel anything in relation to some other, different one. That Arsenal fans suffer from a lack of sensation because nothing really changes. Every season seems the same as the last, even with the Cup wins.

He was right. For every good thing the post-Ozil, supposedly financially-free Wenger accomplished, there was some opposite event neutralizing the good feeling from it. We won the FA Cup; we kept losing in the Round of 32 in the Champion’s League. We got some good wins; we kept losing to the rest of the top six.

Fans of smaller clubs, mired in midtable or worse, get annoyed by what they see as Arsenal fans’ sense of entitlement. It’s not really that. It’s this endless grey Limbo of sameness, where even the third FA Cup win, over hated Chelsea, felt rote. It was, again paraphrasing Early, like placing a finger on the same spot of skin and just leaving it there. We felt nothing.

Arsene began to sound tired. What had been wit with an elfin smile started to feel like entitlement, the interviews of a man who, on some level, knew he could crack wise or really say whatever he wanted because he was never, ever leaving. He started to look hapless on the pitch, a man devoid of ideas when his greatest notions were hidden behind locker room doors and training pitch codes. The optimist’s view was that tactics had evolved but he hadn’t; the pessimist’s was that you couldn’t send players out to sort it out in real time because they were too stupid, too drilled, and too pampered to handle it.

Regardless, he was a man out of time. Most people knew that it was time to slowly close the door on the funny, smart, strange Arsene Wenger, but each person had an individual moment where there was no coming back. For me, it was at Old Trafford the season Leicester City won the title. Louis Van Gaal sent out a bunch of kids and retreads and Manchester United proceeded to kick Arsenal’s ass. I remember Alexis Sanchez’s face as he shrugged his shoulders in disbelief, the title gone in a season where everyone else in the traditional top tier of English soccer sucked. It was time.

It’s hurt to watch Wenger cut an increasingly harried figure, not least because I’ve resented how it’s caused me to question so much of what I love about him. I even came to dislike him a little, which I hated so much there were days I had to get my mind off of it after a game.

Laurent Koscielny is a perfect microcosm of Wenger’s late career. He was plucked from relative obscurity on the cheap, which is a cool example of Wenger’s ability to grab young, usually French talent. He wasn’t great to start with, but he grew to become a really, really good defender. Wenger trusted him, year after year, and he formed a tragically underrated partnership with Mertesacker in those FA Cup winning seasons.
