Former Royals closer Jeremy Affeldt earns different kind of save by rescuing dog with CPR
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jeremy Affeldt retired from baseball in 2015, but the former Royals reliever found himself in the headlines recently for a heroic moment off the field. On Instagram, Affeldt said his dog, Kodi, managed to get a hold of a turkey neck at Thanksgiving and began choking.
Affeldt said he had to pull the turkey neck out, and then had to give mouth-to-nose CPR four times to revive the dog before taking him to an emergency vet.
He described what happened on MLB Network Radio:
“I open up his mouth and I literally punch my fist down his throat… and I actually hook the turkey neck and pulled it out,” Affeldt said.
“Then he died on me and I told my wife I got the turkey neck out, but I said, ‘Honey, he’s dead, I’m so sorry.’  And she’s yelling at me, ‘You save the dog! Do not give up, save the dog!’ So I start giving mouth-to-mouth through the nose, because I know you can’t give a dog mouth-to-mouth through the mouth, it doesn’t work, you can’t feel it. So I went through the nose, and I felt its lungs expand… and it had actually shot all the liquid that was in its lungs out. On the third try I gave him the biggest burst of breath that I could give into his nose and I felt his whole body swell up. And all of the sudden he nuzzled me… and his eyes were massive.”
You can hear the entire interview at this link.
The Royals drafted Affeldt in 1997 with visions for him to be a starter, but he eventually moved to the bullpen and was a closer in 2004. While he closed out 28 games in his 14-year MLB career, this likely goes down as his greatest save.

Kodi is home!!! Two nights ago he choked on some of his food and I had to give mouth to mouth cpr to him 4 times to bring him back! I was super scared and super focused on sustaining his life that seemed over! After I got him breathing I rushed him to emergency vet hospital and they got him back to almost full strength and these pictures don’t do it justice the first time we saw each other. The bond we now share is absolutely amazing! #mansbestfriend #kodibear #tripleboom

Did Giants ace toss most perfect perfect game ever?

Did Giants ace toss most perfect perfect game ever?
http://twitter.com/#!/SFGiants/status/213131594947502083
San Francisco Giants ace Matt Cain tossed the 22nd perfect game in the history of Major League Baseball, but this might just have been the greatest one ever.
Cain struck out 14 batters to tie Sandy Koufax, when he achieved perfection in 1965. In addition, Cain’s Game Score was 101, which also ties Koufax for the highest ever in a perfect game.
The next highest was Randy Johnson’s perfect game in 2004 when he reached 100, while the highest ever was Kerry Wood’s 20-strikeout game in 1998 when he achieved 105.
Game Score is a statistic that rates pitchers’ starts (usually from 0 to 100) based on innings pitched, runs, hits, strikeouts and walks. The average Game Score is between 49 and 50.
Most tweets were congratulatory.
CONGRATS to.Matt Cain and all Giants fans..great historic achievement for a Great Pitcher

All the best moments from recent ‘Game of Thrones’ theme nights around baseball
Bruce Bochy looks way too comfortable on his Iron Throne.
This week, a handful of MLB teams celebrated the start of the new season of Game of Thrones with themed nights at the ballpark. Of course this isn’t the first time professional teams, even outside of baseball, have used the show as a fun tie-in to market their team and it certainly won’t be the last.
A few teams had Thrones nights earlier this year and a few are set to celebrate the show during the dog days of August in the middle of its 7th season. But the teams this week that got to time their nights perfectly to the much-anticipated premiere were the Giants, Red Sox, Marlins, White Sox, and Royals.
Since Game of Thrones is consuming our lives for only two more seasons before it goes away forever, here are some of the best moments that occurred over the past few days.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy got comfortable on his own “Iron” Throne and Hunter Pence showed off his posing skills.
Protector of the Realm Bochy says the Throne was actually made of hard plastic and not too uncomfortable. #SFGiants http://pic.twitter.com/PzKsSCdbX1

Pence’s wife Alexis got in on all the fun too, and she really committed.

Tom Koehler of the Marlins loves the show so much that the team made him a Game of Thrones inspired bobblehead, which you can already get secondhand if for some reason you really want one.
Andrew Benintendi of the Red Sox also got his own bobblehead...

...which is a much more positive spin on Thrones for Boston than when the Rays introduced them as White Walkers during Tampa Bay’s own theme night.
The Rays have a Game of Thrones thing going on. And the Red Sox are the White Walkers, of course. http://pic.twitter.com/EOFJR6s4Yo
— Michael Silverman (@MikeSilvermanBB) July 8, 2017
For the White Sox, they got to celebrate both a fun night celebrating the show and the highly-anticipated arrival of top prospect Yoan Moncada. Suffice to say some fans got very into that combination .

— John (@JohnW1016) July 19, 2017
The Royals’ night went....well there’s not much that can be said about how the Royals’ night went.
The highlight of my night: Rex Hudler referring to "Game of Thrones" as "Star Wars" , never change Rex #Royals
— Trevor Leslie (@Trevorski3) July 20, 2017
Game of Thrones is so popular that there’s almost certainly another summer of these tie-in nights to come. Which should be interesting, considering that some of the characters being celebrated by some teams right now might not even be around during this time next year.
