1. Different countries (typically) used different weaponry. On the surface this is pretty cut and dry. Germany manufactured German arms that the German Army used. Britain manufactured British arms that the British Army used.

This is actually not as straightforward as it seems though, given the introduction of the lend lease act: before America's official entry into the war, they were economically throwing in on the side of the Allies which included some sweetheart deals that were essentially constructed to ensure that allied countries like Britain and the USSR had what they needed to keep fighting the war. A great example is the Sherman tank, which was the basis of the British Firefly (a modified Sherman). (For more insane tank variants, not necessarily on the Sherman, check out Hobart's Funnies.)

That's all a tangent though. For context of this: M18 was the standard US gun (there were a few others in use but general issue would be a M18) and the K98 is a Karabiner 98K, which was a commonly issued German gun. Servicemen could tell the difference between weapons based on the sound. A famous example would be the screaming mimi, which got its name from the sound it made. The difference in machine gun sounds was also distinct, for example.

2. Ed Pepping was another Easy Co medic - he had a terrible landing on D-Day and it impacted 3 of his vertebrae. He actually did keep fighting, but became wounded in Carentan, after which he was evacuated. (He rejoined the company for Market Garden!) If you want to hear more of his story in his own words, he shows up in We Who Are Alive and Remain. 3. There was a whole tier of medical attention, beginning at the front lines that went all the way back (to one's home country). You can think of medics as first-aid providers but not necessarily specialists who can "treat". For serious things, they would do triage (slow/stop bleeding, pain management) and then the wounded individual would be sent back to the aid station. From an aid station, you could either be treated (if it was equipped for it and your issue was not too serious) or you could be evacuated further back. Think of it like a circle with concentric rings - each subsequent evacuation generally resulted in a hospital further from the front lines and that had more specialized surgeons/care. This could go all the way up the food chain to medical evacuations to England and then being sent back to the US for medical care.

However, there was an issue with this: if you spent too long off of the front lines, it could become notoriously difficult to rejoin your actual unit (think of how Popeye went AWOL from the aid station to rejoin Easy before Market Garden). If you were absent for too long, rather than be returned to your original unit, you would be redirected to the "replacement depot" which was much loathed. And of course, you could be reassigned to a random unit with men you didn't train with, didn't know, and didn't trust.

Dieser Karabiner war die Standardwaffe der deutschen Wehrmacht vor und während des zweiten Weltkrieges.

Es gibt bis heute viele Nostalgiker, die dieses Gewehr glorifizieren und preisen.

Es gibt etliche Videos auf YouTube , in dem Waffennarren dieses Gewehr benutzen, oft getarnt aus rein technischer Kunde.

Es gibt bis heute Unmengen von dieser Waffe in privatem Besitz und Umlauf.

Kürzlich sah ich ein Video über einen jungen Mann aus Österreich, der ein Exemplar von seinem Opa kaufte und damit auf Schießständen umschoss.

Jetzt folgen einige Kurzgeschichten, in dem ich zeigen möchte, wofür und warum dieses Gewehr gebaut und genutzt wurde…

Unausweichlich diesen Befehl zu folgen, auch wenn er nicht gehorcht werden musste.

Es waren junge wie ältere Männer, die als Polizeibataillione der Front folgten und die neu eroberten Gebiete besetzten.

Es waren einfache Männer. Einfache Landser. Einfache Mörder.

Es sei eine Mär, dass Deutsche bei Widerstand eines Befehls, selbst erschossen wurden. Diese Mär ist falsch und historisch bewiesen.

Doch nun standen eine Bataillon an Soldaten zum Appell und erfuhren den neusten Befehl. Der Befehl lautete hunderte polnische Zivilisten aus einem Dorfe zu ermorden. Ein Masaker. Aber warum ? Ob aus Verrat am Deutschen, das Verstecken von Juden oder Beteiligung bei örtlichen Partisanen. Die Gründe waren vielfältig, aber alle dienten sie nur dem Zweck , sie alle zu töten, erschießen, mit dem K98 K.

Es gebe so viele unmenschliche Taten während des Krieges.

Wir alle kennen den Schrecken der Nazis.

Wir alle kennen diese schreckliche Bilder.

Wir alle sollten wissen, was damals geschehen ist.

Deswegen spare ich Worte der Umschreibung der Schrecken des KZ´s und beschreibe nur ein Szenario von vielen:

Eine Mutter und ihr Neugeborenes stehen auf dem Apellplatz in Auschwitz. Ein deutscher Uniformierter hebt sein K98 K , zielt direkt auf die Mutter. Er schießt: Die Patrone zerfetzt das Baby und ihre Mutter…

Heinrich tüftelt in seinem Hobbykeller in der norddeutschen Provinz und schaut sich alte Bilder seiner Zeit als Soldat der Wehrmacht an.

Er sieht sich selbst als jungen Mann mit dem Gewehr im Anschlag.

Gleich komme sein Enkel. Er wolle ihm diese Waffe verkaufen und es ihm überlassen…
