Rahul Dravid’s U-19 teammate Suresh Kumar found hanging | Off the field News

Rahul Dravid’s U-19 teammate Suresh Kumar found hanging | Off the field News
KOCHI: Former Kerala left-arm spinner M Suresh Kumar, popularly known as Umri, was found hanging inside his house in Alappuzha on Friday evening. He was 47. According to the police, Suresh’s wife and son found him hanging in the bedroom when they returned to their house at Pazhaveedu at around 7:10 pm. An officer with Southern Railways, Suresh represented both Kerala and Railways in domestic cricket. He played 72 first-class matches from 1991 to 2005, taking 196 wickets. He has 52 List-A wickets to his name from 51 games. A handy lower-order batsman, Suresh also has a first-class century to his name. He became the first Kerala player to represent India U-19 when he played under Rahul Dravid in a series against New Zealand in 1992. Years later, Suresh’s exploits were back in vogue in the cyberspace earlier this year when a part of Dravid’s 2011 Bradman Oration was shared widely. To emphasise on the diversity of Indian cricket, Dravid had talked about how Suresh, who only knew Malayalam, and a player from UP, who only knew Hindi, combined for a 100-run partnership in the U-19 game against New Zealand. This video triggered an outpouring of memories by cricket enthusiasts. The cricketing fraternity in Kerala was shocked to hear about the loss of a friend who always used to be a bundle of energy. “It’s shocking news for me. Suresh was a natural cricketer who could do everything on a cricket field, though left-arm spin was his main trade. He was a handy batsman low down the order and a natural fielder of international quality. He had the ability to play for India,” said former Kerala captain Sunil Oasis, who played many matches with Suresh. Suresh, KN Ananthapadmanabhan and B Ramprakash formed a potent spin-attack for Kerala those days. “Players of other southern states used to say that the combination of these three was best in the zone,” added Oasis. Suresh’s best performance for Kerala came against Tamil Nadu in 1995 when he bowled his team to their first win over the neighbours in Ranji Trophy with a match-haul of 12 wickets after Ananthapadmanabhan was injured. “Suresh was a classical left-arm spinner and a natural talent. He was an ultimate team man and a happy-go-lucky guy. That’s why I can’t come to terms with the news. Don’t know why he did it. It’s a terrible day for Kerala cricket,” said Sreekumar Nair, another contemporary of Suresh. “He did not believe in a lot of workouts. But whenever he stepped onto the field ,he gave more than 100%. He was a casual person who approached his cricket the same way. He just wanted to enjoy cricket. If he had been a little bit more professional, maybe he could have played for India,” said Feroze V Rasheed, a former teammate of Suresh with Kerala and Railways.

Ranji Trophy: Robin Uthappa Century Takes Kerala To 276/3 As Delhi Spinners Falter On Opening Day
Tumblr media
Delhi coach KP Bhaskar's ploy of using four-pronged spin attack backfired badly as Kerala comfortably reached 276 for 3 riding on a patient hundred from Robin Uthappa on the first day of their Ranji Trophy group A encounter. Uthappa, who has endured a slump in form during the past few seasons, scored 102 off 221 balls with seven fours and three sixes, adding 118 runs for the second wicket with opener Ponnam Rahul (97). Rahul missed his ton by three runs but Uthappa completed his 22nd hundred before being dismissed in the final over of the day by comeback-man Pradeep Sangwan (1/31 in 9.1 overs). In the process, he also added 90 runs for the third wicket with skipper Sachin Baby (36 batting). On a slow track, Kerala skipper Baby called correctly and his decision to bat was vindicated by the top-order, also aided by poor team selection from the Delhi team management. With new captain Dhruv Shorey in charge, it is learnt that Bhaskar, who had a controversial exit after the 2017 season, is calling shots and it was his decision to have four spinners -- leg-spinner Tejas Baroka (1/62 in 19 overs), left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra (1/45 in 19 overs), off-spin duo of Shivam Sharma (0/65 in 17 overs) and Lalit Yadav (0/17 in 9 overs) in the line-up.A fifth spinner -- part-timer Nitish Rana -- also bowled three overs with pacers Navdeep Saini (0/48 in 13 overs) and Sangwan only bowling 22.1 overs between them.In fact, Sangwan, who has last played a first-class match three years back, looked rusty and bowled only two spells.None of the spinners made an impression even though young Baroka, who made his debut after a consistent show at the U-19 and U-23 levels did show some spark. He got his maiden first-class scalp removing the seasoned Jalaj Saxena (32) caught by Lalit. However, off-spinner Shivam was a complete disappointment as he bowled a lot of loose deliveries while left-arm spinner Mishra could hardly extract any turn.Once he got some turn, Mishra was able to dismiss left-handed Rahul but overall could hardly make any impact. With Kerala looking good for a comprehensive first innings score, poor team selection has already put Delhi on the backfoot. Read the full article

New Post has been published on https://toldnews.com/sports/indias-ace-of-pace-what-makes-mohammed-shami-so-dangerous/
India's ace of pace: What makes Mohammed Shami so dangerous?
MUMBAI: It was a typically pleasant, slightly nippy March morning in Dharamshala, but Mohammed Shami, who was in town to play in the Deodhar Trophy, was feeling the chill. The India pacer’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, had just launched an all-out attack on the 28-year-old, her enraged face on every TV channel accusing him of infidelity. More embarrassingly for him, she had even made public his whatsapp conversations with a Pakistani lady.
Clearly worried about the turn of events, Shami had seemed distracted the previous evening and was smashed around for 96 runs off his 10 overs. Worse was to follow the next day: When the BCCI announced fresh contracts for the Indian players, Shami’s name was missing. Worried about the image of the Indian cricketer post the controversy, the BCCI had decided to withhold his contract.
The speedster, who was the hero of India’s memorable Test win in Johannesburg against South Africa, taking 5/28 in the second innings, had to now undergo an anti-corruption inquiry by the BCCI, which soon cleared him of any wrongdoing. Shami got his contract, but lost his place in the ODI team after failing the yo-yo test.
Now, barely a year later, Shami is a certainty for the World Cup. Adversity seems to have made him better. That he had worked hard on his fitness was evident in England last summer, when he played all the five Tests of the series, taking 16 wickets to emerge as one of the few shining lights in a series India lost 1-4.
Before going to Australia, Shami played a Ranji match for Bengal against Kerala with a rider that he couldn’t bowl more than 15 overs in an innings — he ended up bowling 26.
In Australia, combining superbly with Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, the fast bowler took 16 wickets in four Tests at 26.18, as India’s pace battery played a huge part in the team’s 2-1 triumph Down Under. Picked for the ODIs after a long time, Shami put up a decent show in Australia, before coming into his own in New Zealand, getting the Man-of-the-Match award in the first and third ODIs. In three ODIs, he has picked seven wickets @14.71 prompting skipper Virat Kohli to compliment the pacer. “It’s the fittest that I’ve seen him,” he said.
“He’s the main reason why we are dominating opponents. He’s a captain’s delight. A few personal problems were pulling him down, but from this Australian tour, he’s been the difference between us and the opposition. He’s the ‘Virat Kohli’ of our bowling. It’s because of bowlers like him that a captain will feel that his team can pick 20 wickets anytime. He’s in complete control of whatever he wants to bowl,” praised former India seamer Raju Kulkarni.
Shami’s sizzling form has gladdened the heart of chief selector MSK Prasad too.
“He’s been phenomenal. Right through the last year, since the series against South Africa, he’s been bowling extremely well. Credit also must go to the fitness regimen that he’s been put under by Shankar (Basu, team India trainer) and Patrick (Farhart, physio). The bowling coach (Bharat Arun) has been working on him.
“Credit should also go to the workload management, which has kept him fresh. We didn’t pick him against the West Indies at home against India,” Prasad told TOI.
The former India stumper also praised the BCCI for standing by the pacer during his tough time.
Explaining what makes Shami so dangerous for batsmen, Prasad said: “According to biomechanics, the entire momentum should be directed towards the target. In this case, the target is the stumps. If you see a majority of his wickets, they’re either bowled or lbw. If you see his body, his rhythm, everything is directed towards the target — he’s blessed with it. Probably, that’s why he generates so much pace.”
Former India batsman and chief selector, Sandeep Patil, who picked Shami for India in early 2013, said: “I first saw him about eight years back when I was a director at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), after Arun asked me to have a look at him. He was a special bowler. I feel so proud that I was a part of the system when these boys got selected. We got a lot of stick for dropping some greats, but today it’s been proved that it was an ideal decision.”
When Shami was dropped from the Indian team last year after failing to clear the yo-yo test, Patil had aired his views about the need to back the pacer in what was a difficult phase. “I’m happy to see him make a strong comeback. It’s not easy when your mind is unstable. I had said at that time that considering the rough time he was going through, he deserved another crack at the yo-yo test,” he recalls.
A conversation with Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary, who is his close friend, gives one an idea about the steel that Shami’s made of.
“It’s his immense mental strength that has helped him overcome that phase. All his personal issues were out in the public domain. I knew that he’d bounce back. His face or body language never gave me the indication that he was going through a tough time,” says Tiwary.
Tiwary tells you what helped Shami overcome the most tumultuous period in his life.
“He deserves all the credit for his success because his vision was clear. He knew that if he had to overcome these issues, he had to keep his focus on cricket. He worked hard on his game, and kept himself away from all these issues. The best thing he did was that he wasn’t in Kolkata when this controversy erupted. He was in his native place (Amroha). That really helped him. He used to upload his practice videos from there,” Tiwary recalls.
What makes Shami a menacing bowler? “After Zaheer Khan, if there is one bowler I’ve seen who can land the ball on the seam, it’s Shami,” says Tiwary.
Tiwary, who played 12 ODIs and two T20Is for India, believes that like in the Tests, Shami can be India’s strike bowler in the ODIs too.
Patil, though, cautions that it’s crucial that Shami’s form lasts till the World Cup.
“Seeing his rhythm and form, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he remains fit and consistent till the World Cup, because main picture abhi baaki hai!,” he says.

#661 Chahal bamboozles Australia with his guile; MSD-Jadhav chase down the score in IPL fashion like they do for CSK;  Nadal, Federer, Zverev and Djokovic all in contention in Australian open; Sharapova shocks defending champion Wozniacki in 3 set thriller; Cilic beat Verdasco in a 5 set epic; Manish Pandey and Vinay Kumar shine as Karnataka reach Ranji SF and more..:-)
Tumblr media
In final ODI, Kohli won the toss and chose to bow. There was showers around Melbourne too. India made 3 changes.  Kuldeep, Rayadu and Siraj were replaced by Chahal, Jadhav and Vijay Shankar. Before Australia could get an eye in, Bhuvi removed both the openers. Finch failed again to an inswinger. Australai 27-2. Marsh and Khawaja had rescued Australia in first 2 ODI with 50+ stands. They did the same here as well. They placed Vijay and Jadeja with ease. Marsh though was struggling against Jadhav early on. Dhoni dropped him too which was rare to see. Australia brought up 100 by 24th  over without fall of further wickets.  Kohli introduced Chahal. He changed the match upside down. He dismissed both Marsh and  Khawaja in the same over. Stoinis also fell to a beauty from Chahal Maxwell came and went for the attack right away. He and Handscomb had a 38 run stand in 6 odd overs before Shami dismissed Maxwell with a bouncer. Australia 161-6. Handscomb tried hard but Australia got no momentum. Chahal ripped apart Australia tail. Australia 230 allout. Chahal ended with 6-42 which is best spell by an Indian in Melbourne equaling Agarkar’s 6-42 in 2004. India lost ROhit early with a beauty from Siddle. India 15-1. Handscomb dropped Kohli though it was a tough chance. He and Dhawan took India past 50 before Stoinis dismissed Dhawan for 23. India 59-2. Dhoni was dropped by Maxwell of the very first ball. It was as easy a catch as it gets. Dhoni and Kohli then scored some brisk runs. There was a chance to run Kohli out at 32 but a direct hit was needed. India 73-2. Kohli and Dhoni then kept rotating the strike without taking risk.  They had a 50 plus stand before Stoinis dismissed Kohli against the run of play for 46. India 113-3. Jadhav kept the scoreboard ticking along with Dhoni. Both played with lot of authority. Dhoni brought up 3rd fifty of the series. This has been best of Dhoni in last 2 years. He played with lot of freedom though with a little bit of luck. These 2 also had 50 plus stand which took India closer to victory.  Jadhav had scored 27 of 35 at this stage. He ensured Indian think tank didn’t panic.  Jadhav is a street smart player. He doesn’t have the power but plays with lot of common sense which showed. India reached 165-3 at the end of 40th over.  What cost Australia was dropped catches and missed runout chances. It is very uncharacteristic of Australia. For some strange reason, Dhoni kept blocking lot of balls in next few overs. Before one realized, target was 52 needed from 36. Dhoni’s tactics of taking game to the wire works if he stays till the end. But if he gets, he doesn’t leave any time for others which is the risk involved. This was a match which India should have won in 45 overs but it went to the wire again. 44 was needed from last 5 overs. Match changed in 3 balls. 2 wides by Siddle and a four by Jadhav brought target down to 33 from 24, It came down to 14 from 12. India won with 4 balls to spare. Jadhav was unbeaten at 61 and Dhoni at 87. Dhoni has been dismissed only once in this series and that was actually not outJ He is easily the man of the series for India. He won triangular series in 2007 in Australia which was historic. This is even better as India have won test, ODI and tied T20 series. Australia has been dismantled by India and how !!!
In Ranji Trophy QF, Karnataka faced Rajasthan. Manish Pandey chose to bowl first. Karnataka dismissed Rajasthan for 224. Mithun and Gowtham impressed by grabbing 3 wickets each. Rajasthan bowlers reduced Karnataka to 166-9. Vinay and More then had a match winning stand of 97 to give Karnataka a lead of 39. It looked like gold mine. Rajasthan started well as they were placed at 107-1 before Gowtham and Shreyas Gopal ripped apart Rajasthan to dismiss them for 222. Karnataka needed 184 to win . They were reduced to 56-4 before Manish Pandey played a captains knock. He scored 87 runs of 75 balls. It was a sensational knock. Karun Nair also scored a fifty which was his only 2nd fifty this season. In other QF, Kerala beat Gujarat by 113 runs to reach SF for the first time in history. Vidarbha have 1 leg in SF as they scored 629 in response to Uttarkhand’s 355. Wasim Jaffer scored his 9th first class double ton. In final QF, UP scored 385 against Saurashtra. Saurashtra were in turn dismissed for just 208. Saurashtra bounced back well to dismiss UP for 194. Saurashtra needing 372 to win were placed at 195-2 with Pujara yet to bat. It will be an interesting battle.
In Australian open, Federer beat Evans and Fritz in straight sets to setup a clash with Tsitsipas which could be a cracking contest. Djokovic outclassed Tsonga in 2nd round to setup an interesting encounter with Shapovalov. Zverev beat Chardy in a 5 set thriller 7-6 6-4  5-7 6-7 6-1. He faced Bolt in 3rd round. Match of the week was Nishikori beating Karlovic in 3 hour 58 minute clash. Match ended 10-7 in final set super tiebreaker. Nadal showed great form in beating Ebden in straight sets for the loss of just 7 games.  He faced upcoming star De Minaur in 3rd round whom he beat in straight sets. Nadal just lost 7 games. Bautista continued his dream run by beating 10th seed Khachanov in straight sets. Verdasco lead Cilic by 2-1 sets and had match point in 4th set tiebreaker. He served a double fault and rest is history. Cilic won in 5 sets. In ladies, Halep first 2rounds in tense 3 setters to setup clash with Venus Williams in 3rd round. If she wins this, she could face Serena in 4th round who has hardly been tested so far this week. In bottom half of the draw, shock of the week came when 30th seed Sharapova beat 3rd seed and defending champion Wozniacki in 3 sets 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Sreesanth spot fixing charges
Sreesanth at Adelaide Oval
Shanthakumaran Sreesanth (Malayalam: ശ്രീശാന്ത്‌, Santakumaran Srisant)  pronunciation (help·info) (born 6 February 1983 in Kothamangalam, Kerala, India), is an Indian cricketer. He is a right-arm fast-medium-pace bowler and a right-handed tail-ender batsman. In first class cricket, he plays for Kerala and in the Indian Premier League, he plays for Rajasthan Royals. In the past, he has represented Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Kings XI Punjab. He is the first Kerala Ranji player to play Twenty20 cricket for India.
 Early years
Sreesanth was born to Shanthakumaran Nair and Savithri Devi. He has one elder brother and a sister.[1] His brother Dipu Santhan owns a music company in Kochi and his sister Nivedita is a television actress in Kerala. His brother in law, Madhu Balakrishnan is a famous South Indian playback singer.[2]
Sreesanth initially was a leg-spinner in his childhood, modelling his action on India's leading Test wicket-taker Anil Kumble, who was to become his Test captain. However, his habit of bowling yorkers led him to convert to fast bowling, after being encouraged by his elder brother.[3] Following in the footsteps of fellow Kerala fast bowler Tinu Yohannan, who earned selection to the National Cricket Academy in 2000, Sreesanth was selected for the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai. He then made his first-class debut against Goa in the 2002–03 domestic season, claiming 22 wickets in seven matches in the Ranji Trophy[4] and winning selection for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy squad in the same season.[5]
He was selected for India-A side in a tour match against the visiting New Zealand side at Rajkot. He claimed one wicket in twelve overs after being restricted with a hamstring injury. He also missed five Ranji Trophy games in that season, although he still travelled with the side for away games. This led to rumours that an astrologer convinced him to take a break from competition to preserve his longevity in the sport, which Sreesanth categorically denied, maintaining that he was training only to regain his fitness.[3]
In November 2004, Sreesanth entered the record books when he took a hat-trick against Himachal Pradesh in a Ranji trophy game.[citation needed] He was selected to represent India B in the Challenger Trophy in October 2005, a domestic limited-overs tournament.[6] He performed impressively in that tournament, earning the Man of the Series award and being the leading wicket taker (7) with the third best bowling average.[7] This led to his selection to Indian team for the home ODI series against Sri Lanka.[8]
ODI career
Sreesanth was given the new ball[9] in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Nagpur. After being punished early by Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya, Sreesanth returned to claim his first two ODI wickets at the end of the match.[10] He was left out of the team and was later recalled for the fourth, fifth and sixth ODIs as coach Greg Chappell tinkered with the line-up. He was retained in the squad[11] but did not play in the 5 match series against South Africa, but played all five matches in the tour to Pakistan, recording a haul of 4/58 in the fifth ODI against Pakistani cricket team in Karachi. A good home series against the England in April 2006, in which he claimed 10 wickets at an average of 16.3, including a career best 6/55 in the final match at Indore (in which he was awarded the man of the match award [1]),[12] led to him subsequently being awarded a BCCI contract, in the C-grade in May.[13]
His disappointing economy rate led him to be left out of the ICC Champions Trophy squad of 14, with the beneficiary being R. P. Singh. He made an unexpected come back to the blue squad due to the injury to Ajit Agarkar later in the tournament. He was also out of the Indian ODI team for the England tour.
In the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Sreesanth was selected due to injury to Praveen Kumar. He was expensive in the first game going wicketless at 53 runs in 5 overs. He was selected in the final where he gave away 52 runs in 8 wicketless overs.
Spot fixing allegation and arrest
On May 16, 2013 Sreesanth was arrested on charges of Spot fixing during IPL 6 by the Mumbai police along with Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, who play alongside him for Rajasthan Royals.[27][28] His father Shanthakumaran Nair initially alleged that Sreesanth's compatriots from the Indian team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh had conspired against him and were responsible for his exclusion from the team.[29] In a press statement, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar laughed off the allegations by Sreesanth's parents; "This is totally wrong. Dhoni did not put the towel in his trouser", he quipped.[30] Nair retracted his statement later the same day on TV and apologized for his outburst against Dhoni and Harbhajan.[31] Jiju Janardhan, another key accused in the spot-fixing, is believed to be Sreesanth's cousin and an under-22 Gujarat player. [32] On 17 May 2013, Sreesanth confessed to spot-fixing.[33]
Warwickshire
In August 2009, Sreesanth signed a deal to play for Warwickshire for the remainder of the English season.
Official warnings
Sreesanth is noted for his exuberant and emotional behaviour, especially whilst appealing for and celebrating wickets. He has been warned several times for indiscipline both on and off the cricket field, and frequently fined for violating the player conduct guidelines of the International Cricket Council. In October 2009, the BCCI issued a final warning to Sreesanth that any repetition of his code of conduct violations might result in drastic actions such as a ban from domestic cricket.[34] Subsequently, the Kerala Cricket Association also issued a final warning over repeated violations of their code of conduct after Sreesanth failed to turn up at the Kerala Ranji Trophy team camp in Kannur.[35]
In November 2009, however, after more than 18 months of omission from the national team, Sreesanth was recalled to the Test squad for the first two matches against Sri Lanka.[36] He replaced Ishant Sharma for the second Test in Kanpur, where his five wicket haul in the first innings of the match earned him the Man of the Match award and helped India to win the Test match by an innings and 144 runs.[20]
The name Sreesanth
Correct name
In the English-language media, Sreesanth's full name has been the source of some confusion. He has been variously referred to as "Sree Sreesanth",[37] "Sri Sreesanth",[38] "Shantha Sreesanth".[39] and "Shanthakumaran Sreesanth".[40] He has also stated in the past that he wished to be known as "Sree Santh".[41] In September 2007, Sreesanth said that his name was just "Sreesanth" and that the other variations were incorrect:
"It's Sreesanth. There is no Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, there is no S. Sreesanth. There was this function recently where they called me Sree Sreesanth, then Sree, and finally S Sreesanth. It's just Sreesanth."[42]
Decision and cancellation of name change
When his form slumped in 2006, Sreesanth had tried to change his luck by changing his name to Sreesunth, on numerological advice. He later stated that he was not going to change the name due to sentimental reasons. The word 'santh' in his name is derived from his father's name Santhakumaran Nair.[43]
Cultural depictions
A character "Srikant" in the 2009 Malayalam film Daddy Cool resembles Shanthakumaran Sreesanth. The film was directed by Aashiq Abu and was a box office success.[44]

An important win: Baby – The Hindu
[ad_1]
Kerala captain Sachin Baby was obviously a relieved man after his team secured its first win in this Ranji Trophy season.
“We needed this win badly. We had lost a couple of close games which I thought we should have won. It was important for us to win in our home conditions. I had faith in our spinners and though the target wasn’t big I backed my boys to bowl them out. Jalaj bowled…

5 players to consider if MS Dhoni retires
The debate about when MS Dhoni should hang up his boots is getting big with each passing day. While many claim that Dhoni should retire now so that India have enough time to prepare a wicket-keeper batsman for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2019, it should be up to the 37-year-old cricketer to decide when to say goodbye to international cricket.
Dhoni is one of the finest cricketers India has ever produced, and he is also among one of the most successful Indian captains. He has been the number one choice for wicket-keeper since 2005. Donning the gloves behind the stumps for India, he is faster than light stumpings, his flying catches behind the stumps are still a treat to watch. But should MS Dhoni be retained in the Indian side only because of wicket-keeping?
For the first time, India’s World Cup winning skipper MS Dhoni was booed by fans at the ‘home of cricket’ Lord’s. Veteran Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar even compared his own infamous 36-run innings to MS Dhoni’s performance at the Lord’s.
Legendary English cricketer Patsy Hendren had once said: “One should retire when he is good enough to play on, and people should ask ‘why now, and not why not now'”. So, has the time come already? Even if he doesn’t hang up his boots now, and plays till next year’s World Cup, the 37-year-old wicket-keeper batsman definitely doesn’t have too much time left to be on the field.

So, who will fit into the gloves of the illustrious keeper if he actually decides to resign? While finding a worthy replacement will be a tough task for the selectors, here is a list of five batsmen who can fill the vacuum to some extent.
Rishabh Pant
Young Delhi batsman Rishabh Pant is our first pick. Pant is young and can be the next big thing in Indian cricket as predicted by many. The 20-year-old Delhi cricketer is arguably the most talented batsman in domestic cricket and Pant’s wicketkeeping skills make him the perfect choice for the spot behind the stumps. Pant’s name started doing the rounds after ICC Under 19 cricket World Cup, and he has also been a regular batsman in India ‘A’ team for the past two years.
Rishabh Pant (Photo: AFP)
And now Rishabh Pant has also been called for the Indian Test side for the tour of England. Pant was also the highest run-getter for Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2018.
Dinesh Karthik
Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik, who created a buzz after his heroics in the finals of 2018 Nidahas Trophy, can also keep the wickets for India. Karthik had a stellar campaign as KKR captain in the recently concluded season of Indian Premier League and he is also pretty good with gloves.

Karthik’s performance in IPL earned him a call from both India’s ODI and Test squads against England. Though Karthik was not extraordinary with the bat in the ODI series, he would still get a chance to prove himself in the upcoming Test series.
KL Rahul
KL Rahul is another wicket-keeper batsman, who can replace MS Dhoni in the limited overs game. Rahul had kept wickets for Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore and for Kings Xi Punjab in the Indian Premier League, and had done a pretty great job.

Rahul is also a regular feature in the Indian squad in all formats of the game (Test, ODI, T20Is). Rahul was the third highest run-getter for KXIP in the 11th season of IPL, scoring 650 runs for his franchise.
Sanju Samson

Pitches, not Kuldeep, reason for Gujarat move - Piyush Chawla | Cricket

“The need for new challenges” has led legspinner Piyush Chawla to move from Uttar Pradesh to Gujarat for the upcoming Indian domestic season. Chawla and RP Singh, the former UP pacer who signed with the reigning Ranji Trophy champions last season, will be the two professional players for the side in 2017-18.
Chawla’s paperwork has been completed, allowing him to join the Gujarat squad ahead of their pre-season camp next month, after his stint with Chemplast in Chennai’s first-division league. Chawla was earlier in talks with Vidarbha, who eventually signed legspinner Karn Sharma.
“Up north, you either get flat wickets or seaming tracks. We’ve struggled to find a middle path, so as a spinner, opportunities to make inroads are very less. I wanted to play in an environment where the surfaces are little more responsive and allow you to make an impact,” Chawla told ESPNcricinfo. “It was a hard decision to move from a state where you’ve played right from the start, but pure cricketing reasons merited a move.”
Chawla brushed aside murmurs of competition for places with Kuldeep Yadav being the reason for his move. “Most teams field two spinners anyway, so that isn’t the reason,” he said. “We play together at the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders. I’ve been around for 12 years now, so there’s no insecurity. I’ve read these things in the papers, but I can’t explain the reason to everyone. He’s come along very well, but for me, personally, at this stage of my career, I wanted a new perspective and I thought playing for a side that has come up tremendously would give me an opportunity to contribute in many ways.”
Parthiv Patel, the Gujarat captain, felt Chawla’s experience would be invaluable. “With India playing lot of limited-overs cricket at home, there’s a possibility we may not have the services of Axar Patel throughout. We wanted to strengthen our spin department, and we’re happy to have someone of Piyush’s calibre,” he said. “We will be playing our home games in Surat and Valsad, where it turns. Having a wristspinner, we thought, would add a lot of value.
“He’s also very handy lower down the order as a batsman. That skill of his is underrated. So overall, he brings a lot to the table. We had a chat last year. He indicated his willingness to come over, which we thought about ahead of the season. When we assessed our balance as a squad, considering we will defend our title, we felt we were lacking in the spin department. With Piyush coming over, we feel we have most-boxes ticked.”
Chawla, a Ranji Trophy winner with UP in 2005-06, the same season in which he debuted for India, led the side in 11 first-class games across three seasons. He featured in just two first-class matches in a disappointing campaign in 2016-17, when UP finished seventh in the nine-team pool, with one win, four losses and three draws.
Chawla has picked up 386 wickets over 117 first-class games, 80 of which have been for UP. An IPL regular with Kolkata Knight Riders, Chawla last played for India in 2012.
