1) Why did you decide to Study Abroad? Specifically, what made you choose to go to Cadiz?

I always knew I was going to study abroad because I major in International Relations and it is a requirement for the major. I also major in Spanish, so my decision to study abroad in Spain was a pretty easy one, as I had always wanted to visit Spain someday regardless. I knew the only semester program Geneseo offered in Spain was in Cadiz, but that was not why I did it. Once I had read the program description online and then also done my own personal research about the city, I was sold. Cadiz was everything I wanted, it was on the beach, it was small and easy to navigate, and the locals were known for being kind.

2) What was your favorite part about Cadiz?

My favorite part about Cadiz was how laid back the way of life was. Everyone walked slowly and never seemed to be in a rush, punctuality was rarely important, and siesta was taken very seriously by locals. Even if I was having a difficult time in my classes, I never felt too stressed to enjoy my surroundings and how beautiful of a city I was in.

3) Describe a day in the life of a student in Cadiz?

Classes at my University were 2 days a week, 2 hours each session, and my specific school (The School of Philosophy) did not have any classes on Fridays. I had classes at various times of the day, including one that did not meet until 7pm. Cadiz is so walkable that it was always easy to go home during the day and make lunch or hang out, and then go back to school later.

4) What were your accommodations like?

The first month of being In Cadiz I lived with a host mom. She was in her 70s and was widowed. She constantly had new study abroad students moving in and out her house because she enjoyed hosting them and meeting people from different parts of the world. She was very old-fashioned in her ways, including cooking, which meant she made phenomenal food. Every lunch we ate was a three-course meal, and every breakfast was a huge spread. After the first month, I the moved into an apartment where I had a roommate from France and a roommate from Ukraine. Every person's native language was different, and all of us were still in the midst of learning Spanish, so our communication often led to a lot of laughs when none of us knew the word for something.

5) Did you do any traveling while abroad in Cadiz? Where?

During my time abroad I traveled to 9 different countries. I was lucky because my class schedule was perfect in that I was finished with class early on Thursday mornings and didn’t have class again until late Monday evenings, so I always had weekend time to take trips. My favorite places I visited were Fez and the Sahara Desert in Morocco, Amsterdam for King’s Day, and Lagos in Southern Portugal.

6) What is one thing you wish you could have done differently?

If I could do one thing differently, I would have set a week aside to walk the Camino de Santiago in the north of Spain. It was something I had wanted to do, but never got around to planning and prepping because the idea of walking for a week straight didn’t sound very appealing. Now that I’m back, I wish I had done it.

7) What did you enjoy doing in your free time?

The best thing I did in my free time was take a few surfing lessons. I was very bad at it, but it was fun and I’m happy to say I did it. Apart from that, Cadiz truly is the definition a beach town, so I was at the beach almost everyday once it was warm enough.

8) What is one thing that anyone interested in going to Cadiz that they should know?

Before going to Cadiz, I think everyone should be ready to practice Spanish. There are hardly any locals who speak English, so it is important to be open-minded and willing to try and learn.

9) What was something you didn’t expect to experience while abroad in Cadiz?

I did not expect how few white-collared workers there were in Cadiz. Most people’s jobs were physical, for example, the garbage was collected and the streets were cleaned every single night. There were also always fisherman out at night and selling their catches in the morning at the fish market. There were very few doctors, lawyers, etc. In fact, if you were sick in Cadiz, the first place you would go was usually the pharmacy to talk with them about your symptoms first, and then they would advise you what to do from there and tell you if  you needed a doctor.

10) How has studying abroad impacted your life?

I think studying abroad made me more confident. The very first day when I had to travel alone and get myself from Buffalo, NY to the residence of someone I had never met in a tiny city in Southern Spain, I was terrified. Now I look back and I’m so proud of myself  for getting to my host mom’s house alone, and in the long-run becoming a smarter traveller by the end of my semester abroad. And this is just one area I’ve gained confidence in, I also feel more confident speaking Spanish, approaching strangers for help, and more.

11) Would you recommend that other students study abroad in Cadiz? Why?

Absolutely! Cadiz is a city filled with history and unique landmarks. The way of life is so simplistic and it is a perfect place to go and be self-reflective and open to appreciating another culture. I look back on my time there and I do not wish that I had gone anywhere else.
