The Rise of Professional Lice Treatment Centers: What You Need to Know
Head lice infestations are a common problem for families, particularly those with school-aged children. Traditional home remedies and over-the-counter treatments have been used for years. Still, more and more people are now turning to professional lice treatment centres for faster, more effective solutions. These centres, like Bye Nits Salon, offer specialized services for head lice removal, ensuring a thorough and stress-free experience for parents and children alike. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind the rise of professional lice treatment centres and why they have become a go-to option for lice removal.
Why Are Professional Lice Treatment Centers Becoming Popular?
Effectiveness of Treatment
One of the main reasons professional lice treatment centres are gaining popularity is their effectiveness. Unlike traditional home remedies that may not eliminate lice and nits, professional centres use advanced tools and techniques designed specifically for lice removal. Centres like Bye Nits Salon employ certified lice removal specialists who use non-toxic products and special combing techniques that ensure all lice and nits are removed in a single session.
Time-Saving Solution
Head lice removal can be a time-consuming process when done at home. Parents often spend hours meticulously combing through their child’s hair, only to find that they missed some lice or nits. Professional treatment centres provide a much quicker alternative. In most cases, a single treatment session can last between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the severity of the infestation. This saves families hours, if not days, of manual combing and reapplication of products.
Expert Knowledge and Equipment
The staff at professional lice treatment centres are trained experts in lice removal. They have extensive knowledge of lice biology and behaviour, enabling them to tailor treatments based on the level of infestation. Centres like Bye Nits Salon use specialized equipment, such as professional-grade combs and magnifying devices, to ensure that every unit is removed, reducing the likelihood of reinfestation.
Comfortable and Stress-Free Experience
Removing head lice can be a stressful ordeal for both children and parents. Professional lice treatment centres create a calm and comfortable environment where children can relax while their hair is being treated. The process is often much less stressful than home treatments, where parents and children may feel frustrated by repeated failed attempts. Bye Nits Salon, for example, is known for providing a child-friendly atmosphere, complete with entertainment to keep children engaged during the treatment process.
Non-Toxic Treatments
Many over-the-counter lice treatments contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the scalp and skin. Some strains of head lice have even developed resistance to these traditional pesticide-based products, making them less effective. Professional lice treatment centres often use non-toxic, natural products that are safe for children and sensitive skin. Bye Nits Salon uses chemical-free solutions that are highly effective and safe for all ages.
Follow-Up and Prevention Plans
Another reason for the growing popularity of professional lice treatment centres is their comprehensive aftercare and prevention plans. Many centres offer follow-up inspections and provide families with education on how to prevent future infestations. Centres like Bye Nits Salon ensure that families leave with a clear plan for maintaining a lice-free home, offering tips on cleaning household items, checking family members for lice, and preventing reinfestations in the future.
The Process of Professional Lice Removal
The process at a professional lice treatment centre is designed to be thorough and efficient. Here’s what you can expect when visiting a salon like Bye Nits Salon for head lice removal:
Initial Consultation: A lice specialist will conduct a thorough examination of the scalp and hair to assess the severity of the infestation.
Treatment Application: Non-toxic, lice-killing products are applied to the hair, and the scalp is massaged to ensure the product reaches every louse and nut.
Combing: Using professional-grade lice combs, the specialist will systematically comb through the hair to remove all dead lice and nits.
Final Inspection: After the combing process, the specialist will perform a final check to ensure that no lice or nits remain.
Aftercare Instructions: Once the treatment is complete, families receive detailed instructions on how to clean their home and avoid reinfestation.
DIY vs. Professional Lice Treatment
While home remedies and over-the-counter treatments are still commonly used, they often come with significant downsides. DIY treatments can be ineffective due to missed nits, resistance to chemical treatments, or incomplete combing. On the other hand, professional lice treatment centres guarantee effective removal, reducing the chances of lice surviving and multiplying.
For those who have tried multiple home treatments without success, a professional lice treatment centre like Bye Nits Salon can be the best solution. Professional services offer peace of mind, ensuring that the infestation is handled in a single visit without the need for repeated chemical applications.
Conclusion
The rise of professional lice treatment centres, such as Bye Nits Salon, reflects a growing demand for effective, efficient, and non-toxic solutions for head lice removal. Parents who have struggled with home treatments now have a reliable option that saves time, reduces stress, and guarantees results. With the use of specialized techniques and expert knowledge, professional lice removal centres provide families with the relief and confidence they need to tackle head lice infestations.
As lice become more resistant to traditional methods and families seek quicker, safer alternatives, professional lice treatment centres are poised to continue growing in popularity. Whether you’ve been battling a lice infestation for weeks or just discovered it, visiting a professional lice treatment centre can make all the difference in ensuring a lice-free household.

5D Business Ideas
5D business ideas
So as the world and economy are moving, shifting and changing, many of us are starting to question how we make money.
We realise we HAVE TO make money to survive in the 3D world, but for many of us, we can’t stomach doing exactly what we did before, and we’re looking for alternate options that allow us to transition to a more 5D way of being…. and allow us to survive the transition financially.
Cos really, we are not much use as soldiers if we’re starving, freezing, and/or dead ;) LOL :)
But what if you can’t transition to a more 5D way of business?
Yes, there are some businesses that won’t allow for more 5D approaches, but that doesn’t mean you can’t change your business practices :)
You could lower your prices.
You could offer clients a discount, or a chance to pay late, or forgo charging interest.
If you’re flush enough, you could even forgive the debt of some your debtors and take the pressure off them. Chances are that if they haven’t paid you, they haven’t paid others either.
You could offer to do some pro bono work for people or organizations that really need the help.
You could sell unused or redundant stock and donate the proceeds to a charity that will use the funds properly.
Or you could give that stock away to a group that could resell, reuse or repurpose it.
You could use your marketing and PR streams to raise awareness or funds for issues and charities near to your heart - or you could arrange a fundraiser.
One really cool project example I did back in my marketing days, was to get my boss to match the book donations of staff, and the collection was given to a underprivileged school library.
I was also involved in projects like collecting old computer devices to donate to kids in needy schools. People never know what to do with old devices…. so you pick them up, format them and you have a machine that a needy child can learn on. It doesn’t need to be perfect - it just needs to be functional. And it reduces the load of electronic waste going into dump sites.
Or you could do something cool like arrange for instructions on something - like building a home out of old soft drink bottles or tyres - to be printed and distributed to those in need.
Or you could stretch yourself and give up a bit of profit that you’re making, and CREATE a few extra jobs on your staff - even if they are temporary or casual jobs.
And importantly, you can keep money moving.
There’s a great parable of a traveller who stops in in a town one night - a town hit by economic hardship.
He arrives at the hotel in a blustering storm and asks the innkeeper for a room for the night. He pays and goes upstairs to warm himself.
The delighted innkeeper realizes he can pay his butcher’s bill and runs off to the butcher to pay his bill. The butcher gladly accepts and runs off to the local lady of the night to settle his tab.
The lady in question owes money to the innkeeper, and she dashes off to settle her bill with him. He gladly accepts - just before the guest comes down the stairs and requests a refund, because he won’t be staying for the night anymore.
Nobody made any money…but the movement of money settled the debts, took pressure off, and lightened the load of a whole bunch of people.
When people are scared about lack, they tend to hoard - money is no different. But if we have a chance of moving the economy upwards again, it will be because we keep the money moving.
It’s hard to trust in that process at first, but the practice is worth it. And when you are okay with money flowing, you will find that what you need flows to you as well.
Okay that’s more about bigger businesses that may have less flexibility, but anyone can apply any of these.
Now onto the 5D small business ideas...
The point of these is not to be business plan or lay it out in detail - it’s to give you direction. Ideas. Ways to think about it.
Haridressers…. this is a fascinating one, cos your hair becomes very important on the journey at a stage. So, for example, I’m not allowed to cut my hair.
Hair is an extension of the nervous system, and each strand becomes a tendril of connection into the morphic field - so longer hair gives you better information, cos there’s more surface. That’s why spiritual types always have long hair and lean towards it.
So on the first level, hairdressers start battling with how badly people treat their hair, and what that shows about the person’s development. On the second level, they battle working with the actual chemicals - and the use of those is dictated by what the client wants.
A 5D workaround would be to offer a completely organic hairdressing service - masks made from oils and egg and other foodstuff ingredients, for example. And limit coloring to only coloring with henna - as organic and pure as you can find the henna.
You can offer elements like braiding and styling and cutting as well, and you can eliminate hair products. You can also cater to the growing number of woman who are opting for no shampoo.
You could also offer treatments hairdressers usually won’t - like helping moms with lice. Man, even when I was flat broke, I would have gladly paid someone to help me with Jelly’s lice. And she got them more than a few times.
You could also offer head, scalp and shoulder massages, and you could combine the hairdresser and beauty salon with a healing element, like acupressure or crystals, or even just inviting the ladies to come in and offload. So talk therapy while you have your hair done or get a massage.
The same could apply to a beauty salon or nail bar - completely organic with a talk therapy element.
Scrubs made from rough salt and crushed eggshells - you have no idea how amazing this makes your skin feel afterwards.
Hair removal with honey based waxes. Threading to avoid the use of wax for eyebrows, so you limit HOW MUCH you throw away. Foodstuff based masks, organic oils for massages etc.
Completely avoid chemical based stuff altogether... the rule becomes, you only put on your body what you would put in it. With the exception of henna of course lol :)
Another completely organic service you could offer is organic cleaning services.
So instead of using harmful chemicals, you use old fashioned solutions like baking soda (bicarbonate of soda), lemon and vinegar. Coconut oil and other oils.
This would be great for targeting daycares and moms with young kids who want a cleaning service. You could also sell the cleaning products in DIY kits - pre packed little sachets of baking soda etc, already measured out for people.
If you’re into crystals and crafts, you could make spiritual art pieces.
So, for example, little packs of crystals, in specific numbers, with instructions on how to stick them up in designs like crosses, stars, or to use them create crystal grids of power.
There’s also an option for spiritual clothing and fabric items…. you could embroider or design important spiritual symbols onto them - hidden and visible.
Or you could work crystals into the designs, or into hidden pouches on the clothing. I mean, how awesome would it be if every item you put on had some spiritual element to it?
Other options for products are things like carved candles, blessed candles, holy water and holy oil. Many people want access to these items but don’t know how - and don’t trust themselves enough - to make them themselves.
There are a lot of people out there creating “we’ll do the work for you” style events and resources, but as people grow, what they will really want is resources that educate them how to work on themselves and others.
So if you’re thinking educational, aim to arm and empower people with tools they can apply in many situations - there are more than enough of the people catering to those who want to be spoonfed.
Speaking of spoonfed - premade meals, ready to heat meals and school lunches that are real, healthy and organic is an option too.
As is a coffee or tea shop with homemade stuff, maybe a cannabis smoking garden, and large table-style seating for people who want to find company, or need to have a real healing chat with the owner and staff. So all the staff double as healers and can sit down and chat with clients…. coffee with soul ;)
You could also look at ideas like delivering fruit and veg, or healthy lunches, to offices in your area. People often buy junk food for a lack of a better option. so give them an option - and make it easy for them to choose that option.
Speaking of education…. schools for kids who live alternate lifestyles or kids that aren’t vaccinated. Where parents have opted not to vaccinate, they don’t qualify for public schooling or government assistance…. this doesn’t mean they don’t have to go to school though. Affordable schooling for these parents will be a winner in years to come.
So for this, you could become a registered homeschool academy, for example, where you have a curriculum provided by a homeschool provider already, but the rest of the school is lived by 5D standards.
Organic, vegetarian and vegan meals, classes on spirituality and even religions, crystals and healing. These can be taught 5D style - so no exams or tests for these classes you create yourself.
You could cater to ADHD kids where the parents don’t want to medicate, for example, as well as offer real guidance and communication skills to kids - 5D style. Also give them spaces to explore all religions, modalities and practices.
Another great area is tiny homes and alternate lifestyle communities… people will want to start living together in communities again. Moving away from the big homes and sprawling space. Living more simply.
If you are a writer, please use your writing ability. Now - at the level you’re currently at.
You spend a shit ton of time on the journey thinking you aren’t worthy, aren’t good enough, doubting yourself as a healer, and doubting that you have anything of worth to contribute - but you forget about contrast.
We have high standards, and most of us are aiming for God level. That’s a VERY high benchmark.
But if you look at us compared to (contrast) other people, then we are more advanced than most.
This is where contrast steps in - you can really “talk to” the people just above and just below you on the development scale - so we need teachers at every level. Someone like me, I teach the teachers, but there’s only a limited amount of people like me needed.
The people below have a much wider market to work with, because there are way more people at that level. And we need teachers at every level - enough to cater to the amount of people at that level.
So when you write, write from your level of experience, and cherish that. You’re only writing about it to coalesce the info, and because you’re moving on from that stage. Leave the info behind for the people coming after you.
When you’re on the journey, ideas often seem to conflict and contradict each other for a while, with one idea replacing the next. But later on you’ll see why you needed all that understanding in single, bite sized pieces, and how it all ties together in one coherent thread.
Don’t be afraid to show that your thinking has changed - and don’t be surprised when people are shocked at the 180s you do. I’ve lost more than a few friends along the way - and business as well. But you will be well glad you took this risks later on, once you see how it all fits together.
We’re the transition team - and what we do is pave the way for the coming stage and age.
It’s our job to figure out how to put this new way of being into the existing world, to match the new desires arising in people, and to help the world evolve.
And we’re receivers for cosmic information…. so if you have an idea, share it.
There is place for more than one business in the world, of all the necessary types.
The information we’re getting now in shifts is info for everyone - we’re moving towards unification and a sharing economy. So share the ideas please - you’ll only be rewarded with more ideas.
Light, peace and harmony, Amara xo

How to Avoid Reinfestation After Lice Treatment
Head lice can be a persistent problem, but once you’ve treated them, the last thing you want is to deal with reinfestation. Ensuring that lice do not return requires vigilance and proper follow-up care. Here’s how you can prevent head lice reinfestation and keep your family lice-free.
Follow the Treatment Plan Thoroughly
One of the most critical steps in preventing reinfestation is to adhere strictly to the treatment plan. Many lice treatments require a follow-up application after a week to ensure that any newly hatched lice are eliminated. Whether you’re using a prescription treatment or an over-the-counter solution, make sure to follow the instructions meticulously.
Clean Personal Items and Bedding
Lice can cling to personal items and bedding, so thorough cleaning is essential. Wash all bed linens, pillowcases, and clothing that may have come into contact with the infested person in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C). Dry them on a high heat setting to kill any lice or nits (lice eggs) that may be present. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for at least two weeks.
Use a Lice Comb
After treatment, use a fine-toothed lice comb to remove any remaining lice and nits from the hair. Comb the hair in small sections, starting at the scalp and working your way out to the ends. Regular combing will help ensure that no lice or nits are left behind, reducing the risk of reinfestation.
Treat the Entire Family
Lice spread quickly through close contact, so it’s essential to check and treat all family members if one person is infested. Even if no one else shows symptoms, it’s better to be safe and prevent the lice from spreading.
Maintain a Clean Environment
Regularly vacuum carpets, upholstered furniture, and car seats to remove any lice or nits that might be present in your home environment. Pay special attention to areas where the infested person may have spent a lot of time.
Educate and Monitor
Educate your family about how lice spread and the importance of not sharing personal items like hats, combs, or hair accessories. Watch for any signs of reinfestation, such as itching or the presence of lice in the hair.
Seek Professional Help if Needed
If you’re struggling to get rid of lice or if reinfestation continues, consider seeking help from a professional lice removal service. In the UAE, Bye Nits Salon offers expert lice treatment services that can ensure a thorough and effective solution to lice problems.
Conclusion
Avoiding reinfestation after lice treatment requires diligence and a multi-faceted approach. By following the treatment plan, cleaning personal items, using a lice comb, treating the whole family, maintaining a clean environment, and staying informed, you can significantly reduce the risk of lice returning. If you need additional support, professional services like those offered by Bye Nits Salon can provide expert assistance in managing and preventing lice infestations effectively. Remember, a proactive approach is the key to keeping your family lice-free and enjoying peace of mind.

How To Get Rid Of Head Lice: 11 Home Remedies That Really Work
Tumblr media
Just the thought of lice makes most people shiver. Head lice are teeny tiny parasites that live on the scalp and hair shafts where they dine on blood. Nearly ten million school children are diagnosed with lice each year. Lice can be contracted by coming in contact with an infected person through play, sports, school or wearing clothing of someone who has the parasite. You can even get head lice by lying on bedding that an infected person was lying on. It is thought that poor hygiene precipitates a lice infestation which can quickly spread, especially in school and camp situations.
Tumblr media
DO I HAVE LICE?
If your head itches and you see tiny red bumps on your scalp, it is a pretty good indication that you have head lice. You may have excessive itching, irritation behind the ears, itching above the neck and a ticklish feeling on scalp and dandruff from constant itching.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH COMMERCIAL LICE TREATMENTS?
Because they reproduce so quickly, it is very difficult to get rid of lice. There are a number of kits and products on the market that can eradicate the lice but they are also loaded with chemicals. The main ingredient in all of these shampoos and kits is permethrin – a very dangerous and toxic substance that should never be placed near the scalp – especially a child’s scalp. RID lice shampoo, a popular product, contains this nasty ingredient. Permethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide that contains synthetic chemicals derived from natural chemicals found in chrysanthemums. Currently, there are over 3,500 commercial products containing this chemical. Animal studies demonstrate that pyrethroids cause immune, neurological, and reproductive damage. Canadian research also suggests that pyrethroids may cause associated behavior problems in kids. A 2014 study of lice samples from the US and Canada. Researchers found that 99.6 percent of the pesky insects had developed gene mutations making them resistant to common over the counter lice shampoos. Fortunately, there are also nontoxic, home remedies that are equally as effective and don’t leave a chemical residue. Here are some you can try:
11 HOME REMEDIES TO GET RID OF HEAD LICE
1. COMB, COMB, AND COMB Combing your hair with a very fine-toothed comb or a lice comb will remove lice but it must be done carefully and meticulously. For best results follow this method to kills lice: Divide the hair into sections and comb each section individually After each stroke through the hair rinse the comb in a bowl of vinegar. This step should not be skipped or the lice will reattach to the hair follicles. Take your time, this is not a quick process. The more careful you are the better results you will have.  2. GARLIC Lice are not fond of the strong aroma that garlic puts off and the fact that it can suffocate them makes this a highly effective home remedy. Grind ten cloves of garlic into a paste and mix in three teaspoons of lime juice. Apply the mixture directly to the scalp. Be sure to cover all the scalp. Leave the treatment on for thirty minutes and rinse with hot water. The strong fragrance of garlic can suffocate lice, ultimately killing them. 3. HOT AIR There are a number of devices that blow hot air that kills head lice. TheLouseBsuter is an effective product that, when tested, killed nearly 100 percent of lice eggs and 80% of hatched lice. The device is somewhat cooler than a standard blow dryer and is sold to nurses, schools, hospitals, in addition to “lice salons” that specialize in non-toxic lice removal. The journal Pediatrics noted the following, “Our findings demonstrate that one 30-minute application of hot air has the potential to eradicate head lice infestations. In summary, hot air is an effective, safe treatment and one to which lice are unlikely to evolve resistance.” If you do not have a LouseBuster, you can use a regular hair dryer. Astudypublished in the journal American Family Physician found that hair dryers have a 47.2 percent success in eradicating lice, and a 47.5 percent success rate in decreasing egg hatch rate. To be effective, you need to repeat this method several times to get rid of the lice entirely. 4. MAYONNAISE Not only is Mayonnaise is an excellent natural conditioner and natural hair straightener but also a great way to suffocate head lice. The treatment involves the following steps: Apply mayonnaise liberally to your hair and cover with a plastic bag or shower cap Let the mayonnaise set on hair for six hours Shampoo your hair as usual and blow dry (the heat kills the lice also) Comb through your hair using a nit comb Repeat this procedure once a week for two months 5. SALT Salt desiccates lice and eventually kills them. Here is how to do it: Combine a quarter cup of sea salt with a quarter cup of vinegar Spray the solution on your hair and leave it for 2 hours Wash as usual and condition 6. WHITE VINEGAR White vinegar is such a versatile, non-toxic substance and is even effective on eradicating head lice. Mix equal parts vinegar and water and pour over hair. Comb hair thoroughly. 7. ORANGE JUICE Lice detect the acidity of orange juice. Apply 100% pure orange juice to your head and scalp. Put on a shower cap and leave for 30-40 minutes. Comb through with a nit comb and rinse with warm water. Follow with your usual shampoo and conditioner and comb again. 8. ALCOHOL Getting lice drunk is a great way to send them packing. Pour any cheap liquor with a high alcohol content over your head – even rubbing alcohol will work. Shampoo and rinse as usual and comb through your hair thoroughly with a lice comb. 9. LISTERINE Using Listerine to kill lice is one of the cheapest and oldest known home remedies for getting rid of lice. Soak your hair completely in the mouthwash and put a shower cap for about four hours and shampoo as usual and comb. 10. NEEM Neem and neem oil contains an insecticidal ingredient known as azadirachtin which is a powerful natural insecticide which interferes with the reproduction and growth of head lice. It constricts the swallowing capability of lice which starves them to death. Lice hate the strong aroma of neem oil which will help soothe itching and redness caused by the lice. As an added bonus, neem adds moisture and shine to hair. Both the leaves and neem oil are useful for treating head lice. Here are a few methods to try: Neem Leaf Rinse: Put a handful of neem leaves in 3 cups of water and boil until the liquid turns green Remove from the oven and strain, let cool. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual and follow with a neem rinse. Repeat the rinse 3 times. Neem Leaf Paste: Make a paste by grinding the neem leaves Apply the paste on the scalp and leave for 30 minutes Shampoo as usual Repeat the process 3 times a week for two weeks Neem Powder: Crush dried neem leaves into a fine powder (you can also purchase neem powder) Combine the powder and equal parts water to make a thick paste Apply the paste to your scalp and through hair and let it set for one hour Wash hair as you would normally Repeat the process once a week for up to four weeks Neem Oil Shampoo: Add pure neem oil to your normal shampoo (preferably a natural shampoo) and mix well Use this shampoo several times a week for a month Neem Oil and Coconut Oil: Mix six drops of pure neem oil into a few tablespoons of coconut oil Massage the mixture well into your scalp and let it set for an hour Rinse it off with shampoo and water Repeat this process at least twice a week for a month 11. ESSENTIAL OILS Essential oils are extracted from plants through steam distillation or cold pressing. Oils are loaded with therapeutic properties many of which can help destroy a lice infestation. In a 2012 study, researchers found that a 1% concentration of tea tree oil killed almost 100% of head lice in a 30 minute period. A 2% concentration halted 50% of egg hatch after 4 days. Other oils that are effective against head lice include ylang-ylang,rosemary and lavender are also great options. To use essential oils to kill head lice, mix 20 drops of oil in your regular bottle of shampoo and shampoo as usual. Rinse with apple cider vinegar for added lice killing power. Need any of these essential oils? The best place to purchase them is from Plant Therapy here.

How to Get Rid of Lice
Tumblr media
“Lice Lady, can I help you?” is how Anna Albano-Krosche answers the phone. At her salon in Westchester, New York, she doesn’t style hair, she rids it of bugs. “They’re so frazzled,” she said of her clients, many of whom have tried and failed to rid themselves of the itchy infestation on their own.
Head lice are neither harmful nor a sign of poor hygiene, but for such small, innocuous bugs, they can wreak significant psychological havoc. Each year, more than 6 million kids in the US get lice, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That estimate doesn’t count infestations on adult heads—or the countless people who suffer from a phantom itchy feeling when someone close to them is found to have lice.
You have several options for lice removal, from dedicated salons like Albano-Krosche’s (which typically charge $80 or so an hour, with most sessions lasting one to two hours) to DIY nit-combing (which requires at least the same amount of time, plus a lot of patience and a specialized $10 comb). Though some lice have evolved to outsmart the over-the-counter chemicals called pediculicides found in drugstore treatments like Rid and Nix, prescription treatments that will reliably kill lice are also available. Despite what you may have heard, mayonnaise and olive oil haven’t proven to be effective remedies, and—though lice are contagious—they don’t spread as easily as you might think.
Step one: Confirm you have lice
The first thing to do is confirm that what you’re dealing with is actually a case of lice—that the itching isn’t dandruff or an otherwise irritated scalp. Get under a good light and comb through the hair. Albano-Krosche uses a magnifying lamp when inspecting clients, which she finds to be a helpful (if not necessary) tool. The staff at the Manhattan location of Hair Fairies, a national chain of lice-removal salons, use a regular desk lamp. You’ll be looking for moving adult bugs (lice; in singular, “louse”) and their eggs, called nits.
Nits attach to the hair within a quarter-inch of the scalp, and tend to be found near the hairline around the ears and neck, according to the CDC. Young and adult lice vary in color, with adults being darker and around the size of a sesame seed. If you are unsure whether you’re dealing with lice or something else, consult a healthcare professional. Alternatively, most lice-removal salons will check for you, for a fee.
Step two: Decide on DIY or professional treatment
Once you’ve confirmed that you’re dealing with lice, you’re faced with a choice between two methods of removal: chemical (killing lice and their eggs with a solution) or physical (literally nit-picking the infected head, or heads). If you choose physical removal, you have the choice of visiting a professional or doing it yourself at home.
Chemical treatments are not as foolproof as advertised. Some lice have evolved resistance to them, and over-the-counter chemical treatments may or may not be toxic to the bugs you encounter. The American Academy of Pediatrics still recommends pediculicides from Nix and Rid as a first line of defense because these products are inexpensive and widely available, but John Marshall Clark, PhD, a scientist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who studies treatment-resistant “super lice,” told us he thinks these guidelines need to, well, evolve.
Pull Quote
Lice love selfies. Getting a cute photo requires people smushing heads close together.
Though most over-the-counter Nix and Rid treatments cost less than $15 a pop, you have to factor in the labor of going through a potentially fruitless removal process, Clark pointed out. Once “you add in the wear and tear on the parents, it just doesn’t make much sense.” Plus, the instructions recommend following up with physical removal anyway, which shouldn’t be necessary if the chemicals are doing their job.
A better—but pricier—option is to head to the doctor. Over-the-counter treatments are meant to overwhelm the bugs’ tiny nervous systems, but prescription treatments kill lice in other ways, such as suffocation or attacking their muscles. These work 75 percent of the time or more, according to a report from the AAP. Whether this option is a good deal depends on your insurance: Prescription treatments can cost upwards of $150 out of pocket, on top of the doctor visit.
Instead, you might opt to evict each louse individually.
If you do this yourself, we recommend the highly rated Nit Free Terminator Lice Comb,1 which is far superior to the combs that come with most over-the-counter lice treatments. Its long, closely spaced metal prongs make identifying lice and nits easier, explained Albano-Krosche, who uses the comb on clients. A Texas salon chain called The Lice Place uses this comb as well and it’s also the favorite of Hair Angels in Los Angeles. You could wipe the comb with a cloth to assess your success, or dip the comb in a white bowl filled with water, which should allow you to easily see what you’ve removed, and perhaps motivate you to keep going.
The process of combing is tedious. Because a louse can attach a nit to any side of the hair, you’ll need to comb in small sections and in several directions. Essentially, you’ll be inspecting each individual strand of hair, and each square inch of scalp.
I watched this in action at a Hair Fairies salon in Midtown Manhattan, which has big windows and a spread of kids’ toys, and is imbued with a sense of calm not usually associated with lice infestations. A technician swept a toddler’s fine blonde hair back and to either side and finally to the front, gathering the hair, thick with conditioner, into a point like a unicorn horn. Between strokes, the technician wiped the nit comb on a white cloth, where any lice and eggs were visibly stranded.
There’s no magic to this process; in fact, Hair Fairies details exactly how to do it in a video series on its website. However, it’s time-consuming and can be frustrating, especially when combing the hair of a child who is uncooperative or has a hard time sitting still. “Going through the hair and being sure you did it right is very hard. I don’t want to do it and then worry I missed [something],” said Chris Heinonen, a Wirecutter staff writer whose family spent $260 last year on treatments (for two kids and one adult) at an Oregon Lice Knowing You salon. Like many lice-removal salons, Lice Knowing You guarantees its work. If you still have lice a week later, they’ll treat you again for free, though they may require every member of your family to pay for a screening for the guarantee to cover you.
Those costs add up. Your family’s bill might easily exceed Chris’s, especially if anyone in your family has long hair. If you go the salon route, ask for a detailed estimate up front; contact your insurance company to check before you assume you’ll be reimbursed (some lice salons advertise that insurance will pay you back; we don’t have evidence that this is common). To pay for expenses associated with DIY or professional lice removal using funds from a flexible spending account, you’ll need a doctor’s prescription (and, therefore, to pay for a doctor visit).
Time estimate Approximate cost What you get Over-the-counter chemical 30 minutes (possibly on two occasions) $15 for the solution (one bottle will provide up to four treatments) A treatment that may or may not work. Following up with physical removal can increase your chances. Prescription chemical 30 minutes (possibly on two occasions) $100+ for the solution per person out of pocket, plus copay for a doctor’s visit A treatment that will likely work. If your school has a no-nit policy, follow up with physical combing. Visit to a lice-removal salon Less than two hours $150 per person Often a guarantee that you’ll be lice-free—as long as you don’t get reinfested. Plus, someone who knows what to look for does the hard work. Two visits or follow-up combing yourself may be required. DIY physical combing Two hours or more $10 for a comb Likely to work if you are extremely diligent and dedicated. Requires substantial patience.
To get rid of lice you’ll generally need to spend a lot of time, a lot of money—or possibly both. These estimates may vary significantly depending on where you live, how serious the infestation is, and what your insurance will cover.
Essential oils marketed to kill lice and pediculicide-free creams that companies claim loosen nits haven’t been shown to work in peer-reviewed research, according to the AAP. Some salons sell such “natural” remedies, which may not be effective.
If you go the DIY route, skip pantry-sourced remedies like mayonnaise and olive oil. There’s no evidence these are effective for lice or nit removal, according to Clark (and the AAP).
Step three: Keep future bugs at bay
You can do a few things at home to keep lice away once you’ve treated infected individuals, such as washing sheets and pillowcases, vacuuming car seats, and isolating hats and combs for 48 hours (which is longer than the lice can survive away from a food source). “You don’t have to turn your house upside down,” said Maria Botham, owner of Hair Fairies.
You also don’t need to cut hair short. Because lice live close to the scalp—where warmth incubates their eggs, and host blood provides a source of food—hair length matters little. However, shorter hair can make for faster and easier nit-picking.
If you think you’ve gotten rid of lice but they return (or had never fully left), you’re not alone. In the 1990s, before salon-owner Albano-Krosche herself learned how to nit comb and went pro, her own daughters had lice for a full two months.
Though a reinfestation can be incredibly frustrating, “The one thing we really emphasize is it’s not a health hazard,” said Dawn Nolt, a Portland, Oregon-based pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases (which lice cannot spread). In fact, the AAP’s stance is that kids shouldn’t even have to miss school if they’re found to have lice—lice just don’t spread that easily.
“These things can’t jump, they can’t fly, they don’t walk well because they are adapted to holding onto hair shafts,” said Clark. Lice don’t regularly hitch rides on baseball caps or combs, either. Rather, they spread through heads touching, which is why they tend to afflict kids. As Albano-Krosche told us, the bugs love sleepaway camp and selfies—any environment that encourages kids to hug and smush their heads together. Mostly, she said, lice take advantage of kids’ tendencies to be affectionate with each other and their parents: “The little ones don’t know personal space.”
Footnotes
1. This comb can be hard to find in stores. If you care for a school-age child, consider ordering one before you need it, so you’re not stuck waiting for the item to ship. Although a lice infestation is not an emergency (medically speaking, you can wait the day or two it would take a comb you’ve ordered to arrive), having a nit comb already on hand can help you adhere to school policy—or give you peace of mind—sooner. Jump back.
