How about perfumes for the cast of Stoker?
I'm torn between thinking Evelyn is a Chanel No. 5 gal (she comes off to me like someone who kind of sped through her youth trying to get to being a glamorous adult, but then slamming into the wall of loneliness and malaise, the real Lana Del Rey character experience) and giving her Chanel No. 19, which is perfectly fine and normal as a perfume (green and powdery) but I associate with some strong and unpleasant personalities. I could also associate her with a really spicy resinous perfume for evening. When I try to picture her scentscape it’s thrown off by other kinds of high maintenance body smells — makeup, hairstyling stuff, body powders and hand lotions and skincare — so I think overall she smells expensive but hasn’t changed signature fragrances in a long time. My mom’s favorite pillow used to always smell amazing from her perfume and hairspray so I think of that.
India has a very knee-jerk association with Juliette Has A Gun for me, possibly because, yk, gun, and because I was wearing it a lot when the film came out. Lipstick Fever or Midnight Oud??? I could see her with something that combines gourmand-y milk type notes with woody pencil shavings and something kind of dank and unsettling underneath like broken stems/boggy grass, but that’s getting into Making Fake Perfume Oils For Characters which I also love to do but is a different vibe.
Charlie absolutely smells wonderful but it’s all a front rather than something lived-in or that he’s enjoyed for a while. If he doesn’t actively wear his dead brother’s cologne I think he would wear something similar to it. Dior Eau Sauvage seems like a good fit for him, it’s a vintage-y classic (though not *that* old, similar to how the film’s styling has a chronologically hazy vibe) but it also could be the kind of thing you buy along with all your impeccable sweaters and shoes and stuff after you beat your brother to death with a rock. YSL Pour Homme maybe? Citrus aromatic vs. woody aromatic but aromatic all the way. Wrt Richard, I also thought of Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel but it’s just the dad vibes.

Episode 3: “I live the night”
Tumblr media

PREVIOUS EPISODES
The driver stopped them at the bottom of the large stairs of the monument. They all get off the van one by one.
“I can't stay with you, I have an appointment with a collaborator," said René. "Can we meet tonight at the usual Elsa restaurant ?"
"No, tonight we're going to go to La Colombe instead. Can you meet us there at 8:00?"
“All right, I'll see you tonight!
“See you tonight! Elsa showed the boys the way and set off.
“Wait, we're not going to set this up, are we?
“Yes”, Elsa answered. Arthur expired a swearword and began to climb the stairs. It took them a little while to reach the square that overlooks the Sacred Heart. They all arrived out of breath.
“Fucking hell," John exclaimed.” I must have lost a lung during the ascent”.
The group looked around them, then entered the monument while Elsa gave them historical explanations.
“But I thought it was a guy who built this for his girlfriend…” said Arthur. The young woman wondered what he was talking about before she understood the reference.
“You're confusing it with the Taj Mahal....”
“And where is that ?”
“India”, Elsa answered. John laughed at his brother's stupidity as Tom shook his head from right to left.
“It's not that beautiful, is it ? Alfie said. “I've seen better”. Elsa smiled.
“Anything else you want to see?”
“The Eiffel Tower”, responded John.
“All right, let's go now, so you can have time tonight to get ready”.
“To go where?” asked Alfie.
“At my restaurant. We're having dinner there.”
“You have a restaurant ?” asked John.
“I have seven. And 14 bars. It's the most profitable.” The boys looked at her in astonishment.
“Damn it... but how did you manage to buy them? asks Arthur.
“To what ?” Elsa replied.
“Buy them. How did you manage to get the money to pay for all these bars and restaurants ?”
“Buy ? I didn't buy anything !” exclaimed the young woman. “I went into the restaurant or bar, took my gun, put it on the boss' forehead and told him to give me his business. They know my name and methods so well that they accept them right away. No one wants to die, so they prefer to give up what keeps them alive.”
“And what if they refuse ?” asked John.
“I pull the trigger," said Elsa as if what she was doing was completely normal. John had a little laugh and put his hands in his pockets. Everyone else looked at her and thought she was completely crazy. She looked back at them and shrugged her shoulders.
“That's my niece," Alfie said, pointing her finger at her. “That's right, there's only one method, and it's hers. Well done, Elsa !” She pointed her finger back at him to agree with him.
“Shall we go?" said Elsa, rubbing her hands. Tom and Arthur look at each other before following the rest of the group.
They went back to the car that had dropped them off at the bottom of the stairs and were driven to La Grande Dame. They get out of the car and walked until they reached the centre of the square under the Eiffel Tower. Their first reflex was to look up to examine the center of the monument.
“It's incredible," Alfie said, reaching out his arms to the sides. “That's beautiful... Not that Sacré Coeur bullshit or whatever. These are great men, a work of art.” Elsa listened to him with a smile and watched him marvel at the capital's most famous monument. The two eldest members of the Shelby clan discussed, pointing out here and there the axes of the building as John approached Elsa.
“So you have bars and restaurants ?”said John. He immediately regreted his technique of opening a conversation.
“Um, yes”, she answered giggling. “But I don't only have bars and restaurants…”
“Oh, yeah? What else did you take?
“Garages, clothing stores, grocery stores,...
“But in total, how many cases do you have?
“Um, I don't know, I'd say... a hundred ?”
“A hundred?! Are you kidding me now ?" wondered John. Elsa laughed and nodded to say no. “Well... I'm impressed by you," smiled the young man.
“Thank you," she replied. They looked at each other for a few seconds. They didn't talk, but something made them understand each other. It was finally Elsa who started talking again, but she addressed to the group.
“It's time to go home.” Elsa walked the Peaky Blinders and Alfie back to the car but didn't get in. “Your luggage is at your hotel. A car will pick you up at 7:30pm to take you to the restaurant. I'll meet you there." She closed the door behind Alfie and told the driver he can go. His uncle waved at her to say goodbye. The young woman, on the other hand, took a taxi back home to get ready too.
It is 7:30 pm and the men, except Alfie, who took another car from him, get into a vintage car towards La Colombe, first John, then Thomas and finally Arthur. They were all dressed in a black suit with their usual beret and black coat. No one talks at first, probably no one has any real idea what's going to happen tonight. Finally it was Arthur who started the conversation:
"I don't know who this woman is, but she scares the hell out of me..." he said of Elsa. “What have you gotten us into, Tommy ?”
“I have no idea... You better behave yourself, understand ? She's not kidding. If you do something wrong, she won't hesitate to cut your throat clean. So tonight, have fun or at least pretend. Don't do anything, don't say anything that could piss her off," Thomas ordered.
“She's not that bad…” John said. His brothers looked at him confused. “I mean, okay, her torture session with the other one there, it wasn't pretty to see, and her method of getting business is not the sweetest, but next to that, she got the information she wanted, and she has a hundred businesses !”
“A hundred businesses ?” exclaimed Arthur. “Are you kidding me ?”
“No, she told me that ! She has garages, shops of all kinds. She literally controls the city, guys, she wasn't exaggerating. Tom sighs a "fuck". “Besides, I think she's nice” finished John.
“You're just saying that because you want to fuck her" replied Arthur.
“Shut your mouth, Arthur," said John, hitting him several times in the arm.
“Eh! Eh! Eh! Eh! Eh!” Shouted Thomas who was in the middle of the bickering. The two brothers stopped arguing. “That's exactly the kind of behavior I don't want to see tonight. No fucking fights ! You're fucking adults. Act as such."
Thomas' words set up a silence that lasted until they arrived to the restaurant. They get out of the car one by one before being guided by a waiter. They crossed a small corridor that led to the large reception room. There were about a hundred cutlery, spread over round tables arranged in a circle along the walls, leaving a space in the middle of the room. Above them was a large classic crystal chandelier, but it did not illuminate the room. These are small bedside lamps placed on each one that provided a dimmed light. But it was also the spotlights of the stage at the back of the reception hall that gave light. A group plaid a calm and intimate jazz music. Customers laughed, and you could have heard almost all the gossip that slid from lips to ears. The boys, joined by Alfie, analyzed this almost unreal setting. Elsa approached them. She was dressed in a long cream satin dress with long sleeves. The garment sticked to her body and drew her curves. The young woman wore a pearl necklace and two rings, one on each hand. She left her hair loose, curly on the ends. She wore only a little mascara and red lipstick makeup: a real Parisian woman.
“Elsa, you look beautiful !" said Alfie hugging her.
“Thank you my uncle" she replied flattered. “Did everything go well when you got home ?”
“It was perfect. When I told them I was your uncle, they all set out to give me everything I wanted," laughed Alfie. Elsa did the same.
“What about you boys ?”
“Everything was very good, the rooms are beautiful," said Tom. Thank you for choosing a hotel for us and for the invitation tonight.
“It's nothing, it's nice to do business with new people," she smiled. She examined everyone's clothes. “You're all very elegant tonight, thank you for making this effort.” John did not look away from the young woman for a moment. He's completely hypnotized. “Let's sit at our table," she said, taking her uncle's arm. They passed in front and the Peaky Blinders follow them. On the way, she stopped for a few seconds at several tables to see if everything was going well, but also to greet former employees. They finally arrived at a table a little behind the others, in a quieter place. They sat, Alfie next to his niece and John in front of her. A few moments later, a waiter came to see them asking them what they wanted to drink: the Peaky Blinders stuck to their beloved whisky, and the Solomons took red wine. He left as soon as he had the order.
“Good,” sighed Elsa. “So tell me all about yourself”.
“It's up to you to tell us, Elsa! Look at this palace! How did you get it?” asked Alfie.
“Like always. It was even easier to get it, the manager is from the good bourgeoisie, he was so afraid of my gun that I thought he was going to die without being shot. He immediately gave up”
“It's very chic here. People all seem to be bourgeois, important and high-ranking people in society," said John.
“They are.” confirmed Elsa.
“What are they doing here ?” wondered Arthur.
“Well, when they found out I took the restaurant, they wanted to see how a gangster handles a place like this. The restaurant was deadly boring before. So I changed the music and the staff, and immediately the customers saw that it was no longer a place where you might faint from boredom. The people here are not what they seem to be. Some have a small illegal activity, nothing very bad, just to have more income. You know, money calls money. There are also people who come for a little one-night stand, to relax sexually if you want. But most of them have nothing to do with the mafia or debauchery.”
“Then why are they coming ?” Tom asked.
“Because the place is run by a gangster. The bourgeoisie loves gangsters even if they claim the opposite... Everyone wants to taste the danger, right ?” At that moment, Elsa looked John right in the eye with a certain malice. The young man was confused, she made him lose all of his control. The waiter arrived with everyone's drinks.
“What are we toasting to ?” said Arthur.
“To the taste of danger and good business," replied Elsa, raising her glass. Men do the same before taking a sip of their drink. Elsa brought her glass to her lips and stared at John.
They talked for about two hours, about everything and nothing, about family and business, sometimes both at the same time. The music was soft so far, but a waiter cut it and spoke with the microphone: "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Miss Elsa Solomons on stage". When her name was announced, the young woman stood up, kissed her uncle on the top of his head and went on stage under the encouragement of the audience. The Shelbys didn't know what was going on.
"Good evening," she said in a calm voice. “Thank you for the applause. I hope you are having a good evening at La Colombe and…” applause of satisfaction forced her to keep quiet. “Thank you. Tonight I'm going to sing you a very special song, about love in Paris. And I dedicate it to my very special guests of this evening.” She winked at the English and gave the sign for the musicians to start. She had a delicate and strong voice at the same time, making it enchanting. She switched without false notes from soft to powerful in just a few seconds. No one was talking in the room. Everyone listened to Elsa with great attention. A few lovers exchanged a look accompanied by a smile and a caress on the hand. Alfie listened to his niece singing in French, with her hand on her chest and moving her head to the rhythm of the music. John, on the other hand, stared at the pretty brunette, and listened to her voice fill the room. Each of the words she sang, made him feel like an electric shock, a bullet in the heart, even if he didn't understand anything of what she was saying. The bottom of his dress floated with the movements of her body and it was as if John was rocked by the sea. There was no one around them anymore: only him, her and the music. She didn't look at him, she was too busy rambling in his melody. But she felt his presence. She even surprised herself thinking of him when she sang certain words. The last notes resonated in the room, and she finally opened her eyes. The audience applauded and yelled "Bravo ! Bravo !" some even whistled. Alfie stood up and applauded with all his strength and heart, his beloved niece. Elsa smiled, thanked the audience, and sent kisses to her uncle with her hand. She got off the stage and went back to her table. On the way, many people reached out to her to congratulate her.
"Ah, Elsa !" said Alfie, "It was beautiful, beautiful ! Well done !” He took her in his arms and squeezed her hard. He stepped back a little, took the young woman's hands in his and said, “You look wonderful, like your mother. She was as beautiful and radiant as you are.” He pulled her back into his arms, then let her sit down.
“It was very beautiful, Mademoiselle”, congratulated Tom. “What is this song about ?”
“Love. But a special love: they love each other but it's complicated, yet they stay together because there will never be a better place. They're made for each other, it says so.” Elsa took a sip of her wine and called the waiter. “Bring us the dessert menu.”
“Fine, miss," replied the waiter before leaving.
The group resumed the conversation they had suspended to let Elsa sing while enjoying a chocolate fondant. John didn't speak anymore, his heart have stopped and couldn't help but look at the young woman. Finally they all left the restaurant, exhausted from that long day. Elsa said goodbye to some people and went to her uncle's arm. They walked out the restaurant together and waited for their respective cars.
"Miss Solomons,” called out to a man. Elsa turnt around and recognized her employee.
“What's the matter ? What's happening ?”
“We have a problem with the grocery store on the 14th arrondissement.”
“That is ?” she said by raising an eyebrow.
“Someone robbed it. A tramp” the employee replied.
“A tramp? It's nothing. It's nothing. It's all right for this time, but make him understand that next time we'll shoot him down.”
“Exactly, miss, this is the second time he's done this.” Elsa sighed and was forced to leave her new friends.
“Please excuse me, I have work to do. I'll see you tomorrow at the same place we met this morning, at the same time. Don't be late, we'll visit some places to open your bistro.”
“But you're not going to work at this hour, are you ? It's past midnight, Elsa !” shouted Alfie.
“I live at night my uncle. The business wants that.” She kissed him on the cheek, then shook hands with the Peaky Blinders. She reached for John's and gently removed it, slipping her fingers in his palm. But she was not looking. Alfie and John's brothers couldn't know. “See you tomorrow” she said before leaving with her employee in the dark night. John looked at her one last time and got in the car.

Geeta Bali lived a short life of stardom. But whatever she achieved still remains a dream for many in the Indian film industry. The actress who belonged to the golden era of Bollywood - the 1950s and 1960s, died of smallpox at a young age of 34, leaving behind an incomplete Punjabi film and an elite body of work comprising of around 70 films. Her silver screen career stretched for only 14 years, but she accomplished enough, both professionally and personally, becoming a reference point for the futuregenerations of actors and filmmakers.
Actress Vidya Balan is set to play her part in her Marathi debut Ekk Albela. It is a biopic on legendary actor Bhagwan Dada with whom Geeta Bali made a hit onscreen pairing delivering several memorable films together. The film's first song which released recently has Vidya recreating Geeta's magic in the iconic song Shola Jo Bhadke. We go down the memory lane and give you some lesser known facts about Geeta Bali, a name that only remains alive in our minds, and the filmographies of classic Bollywood films.
1. Geeta Bali contributed a lot in making her husband Shammi Kapoor, a superstar"If you see the way Shammi Kapoor danced, that was Geeta Bali's personality. My mother was a bigger and more successful star than my father when they got married" says their son Aditya Raj Kapoor who is writing a biography on his mother.Geeta gave Shammi his confidence and personality. Whatever he did onscreen was a reflection of Geeta. She was a bigger and more successful star than Shammi.
2. During their wedding, unlike the stereotypical practice of putting sindoor, Shammi put red lipstick in Geeta's maanYes, she was such a lady who didn't think twice before breaking rules. Shammi (23) and Geeta (24) fell in love during the shooting of their film Rangeen Ratein in Ranikhet. Though Shammi proposed to her, Geeta took her time to say yes. They had planned a simple temple wedding, but the temple was closed. They went again next morning at 4 AM and finally got hitched. Their wedding was as dramatic as their films. Instead of sindoor, red lipstick was used to do the needful.Shammi, in an interview, had said that after they returned to Mumbai from the shooting of Rangeen Ratein, they realised they couldn't live without each other! Since she had worked with other men of the Kapoor family too, she was hesitant. But Shammi was adamant."We went to a temple where the priest informed us that the Gods have now retired for the night and if we wished to get married we should come back early morning at 4 o'clock. So we went back to my parents' house and then waited. It was raining heavily as we arrived at the temple at 4.30 in the morning. The priest performed the ceremony and we were declared husband and wife. Geeta took out a tube of lipstick from her purse and asked me to apply it on her maang. We went home to my place and rang up my parents and informed them that I was a married man now!" - Shammi Kapoor.
3. She was the only woman to continue working in films even after becoming a Kapoor bahu, in that era.
Geeta was a career girl from a young age. After working in several Punjabi films as a child artist, she did the film The Cobbler at the age of 12. Geeta refused to become a sit-at-home mother. Her family remembers her as loving and full of life. She was adventurous too and went on long drives with her children. She was also a disciplinarian and a promoter of fine arts
.4. Geeta was a Sardar and knew martial arts too.She was born in Amritsar in 1930. Her real name was Harkirtan Kaur. She did regular shows as a classical dancer. She even did stage plays and sang for All India Radio. That's not all! She knew horse riding and had learnt the martial art form Gatka. Quite a lot for a woman in those times.
5. She changed her name when she began acting in Bollywood. She was just 16 when she came to Mumbai. That's when she also changed her name to Geeta, which was the name of one of the characters she played. She used "Bali" which was her maiden surname.
6. Geeta refused to play the typical crying heroine. Her pairing with Dev Anand is still remembered. She did several hit films with Dev Anand, like Baazi, Jaal, Ferry, Milap, Faraar and Pocket Maar. Geeta's charm lay in her naughtiness and grace. Her vivacious character in Albelais one of the most memorable ones. Heard of the songs "Bholi Soorat Dil Ke Khote", "Balma Bada Nadan Hai" and "Shola Jo Bhadke"? All of these are from Albela.
7. She had also romanced her in-laws in films!Geeta was paired opposite her future brother-in-law Raj Kapoor in Bawre Nain. She also shared screen-space with her father-in-law Prithviraj Kapoor in Anand Math.
8. Geeta's secretary was Surinder Kapoor. And Surinder Kapoor is the father of producer Boney Kapoor, actor Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor. He then went on to set up his own production house.9. She is also the aunt of Yogeeta Bali. And actress Yogeeta Bali is married to Mithun Chakraborty. Quite a family tree, isn't it?!10. Geeta's sudden demise left Shammi heartbroken for many years. The legendary actress got smallpox during the shooting of a Punjabi film, Rano, based on a novel "Eik Chadar Maili Si" by Rajinder Singh Bedi. She returned to Mumbai with high fever and passed away in just 15 days. Shammi couldn't come to terms with her death for a long time. Though he married Neela Devi, but he always maintained that no one could fill Geeta's void. It is said that filmmaker Bedi was so devastated by Geeta's untimely death that he abandoned the project. He even put the novel on her burning funeral pyre marking the death of the film as well!Family and friends remember Geeta as a woman with a big heart. She agreed to do Albela starring then character artist Bhagwan Dada. She said '"This is a lovely script and you deserve success." We look forward to the way Vidya Balan will recreate her magic onscreen.'I fell in love with Geeta Bali'
Bollywood actor Shammi Kapoor got to know actress Geeta Bali during the shooting of a film at Ranikhet. He proposed marriage to her several times, till she finally relented. An extract from a new book by Rauf Ahmed
Shammi Kapoor working on his steps on the sets of Janwar
Shammi Kapoor had first met actress Geeta Bali during the making of Miss Coca Cola (1955), produced and directed by one of his closest buddies, Hari Valia (originally Hari Ahluvalia). It was a routine hero-meets-heroine encounter as everyone thought. "Pleasant and warm," as Shammi later described it, but more "professional" than any he'd had with an attractive young actress/woman. For a change, Shammi had refrained from trying out any of his stock-in-trade one-liners on the cool-looking sardarni.
"I got to know the essential Geeta during the outdoor shooting of Kidar Sharma's Rangeen Raaten in Ranikhet," Shammi had recalled. "Curiously, Geeta was not the heroine of the film. Another protégé of Kidar Sharma's, Mala Sinha, was... Geeta was not in the original cast of Rangeen Raaten. She had literally gatecrashed into it to do a cameo of a man."
Ranikhet, which means Queen's Meadow, is a quaint little hill station tucked away in the salubrious, breathtakingly beautiful environs of Kumaon in the Great Himalayan Range.
"There couldn't have been a more potent place to make sparks fly between two vulnerable hearts seeking each other," Shammi had reminisced... "After pack-up, there used to be ample time for two crazy people, who had been inevitably thrown together, to freak out amidst the majesty of the hills. Geeta had the restlessness of a mountain spring and outrageousness amazing for a star. Nevertheless, she was mature beyond her years. She was only 24 then, a year older to me. But, as she told me, she'd lived a very hard life. Her father, a low-paid school teacher, had lost his eyesight. Her brother, sister and mother were partially deaf. It was a situation that could have unnerved anyone, but not her...
"I can't point to the exact moment when I fell in love with Geeta. I guess it was a small incident involving a tiger that did it. I had been pining away for a tiger that had given me the slip. Geeta kept patting my knee and saying, 'Don't worry Shammi, you'll find him.' One night, we were returning to our hotel after dinner. Geeta was in a jeep ahead. As I turned the corner, I saw her jeep parked midway on a bridge and she was on the bonnet doing a strange sort of jig. I ran to her in panic. 'It's that tiger, Shammi, your tiger. It just went this way. Get your gun,' she was yelling out. I was speechless. There was a wild tiger on the prowl in the vicinity and this woman was doing a jig on the bonnet of her jeep in celebration. She just wasn't scared. So how could I help it? I fell in love with her. Madly. I still remember the day. It was April 2, 1955.
Geeta Bali, with whom life had acquired a new meaning and purpose for Kapoor.Pictures from the book
"It was destined," Shammi had reflected. "Or else, why did Geeta force herself into Rangeen Raaten when there was no suitable role for her in the original script of the film?"...
Shammi and Geeta had fallen madly in love with each other... "There were a few question marks, though," Shammi had reflected. "Geeta was a year older to me. She had co-starred with my father Prithviraj Kapoor in a film called Anand Math (1952). She had also worked opposite my brother Raj Kapoor in Kidar Sharma's film Bawre Nain (1950). I was not sure how my family would react to it. But the apprehensions were momentary. I was adamant within myself that it had to be Geeta. She was the woman I was going to spend the rest of my life with. But, ironically, the hurdle was Geeta herself. A pragmatic, down-to-earth woman, she kept cautioning me, 'Shammi, I love you. I can't think of living without you, but I just can't marry you. I can't let my family down. They depend on me. They have nowhere else to go to.'
"...Thankfully, that didn't separate us... My passion had grown to a point of insanity. In spite of her resistance, I kept proposing to her once every few hours like a smitten teenager. And she kept turning me down with her lovely smile.
"Four months of agony, tears, cajoling, pleading, separation and desperation followed. Then one day, the inevitable happened, just out of the blue. On August 23, 1955, we were at Juhu Hotel, Bombay... I had been staying there as there was no one at home. My parents were out in Bhopal with the Prithvi Theatres troupe. I proposed to Geeta again, knowing she'd shake her head once more and smile. But she didn't. Instead, she knocked me out of my wits. She said, "OK Shammi, let's get married. But it's got to be now..."
"You mean right now? This moment?" I asked her in disbelief.
"Yes, just now... or it may never happen." she said in a no-nonsense tone.
"I jumped up and said, 'OK, just now... done.'"
"We drove straight to our common friend, Johnny Walker (the late comedian) for guidance. He had eloped with his girlfriend (actress Noor) and got married barely a week earlier... 'We are Muslims,' he said. 'We just had to find a Kazi. You are Hindus, you may have to go to a temple and get married.' That made sense. We drove to Bandra to my friend, Hari Valia, producer of Coffee House in which Geeta and I were working at that point.
"Hari had had a similar experience. He took us to the famous Banganga Temples off Napean Sea Road, in South Bombay... When we reached the temple at the crack of dawn, Geeta in her by-now crumpled salwar-kameez and I in my kurta-pajama, it was pouring cats and dogs. With Hari Valia as the sole witness, the pujari (priest) performed the ceremonial rites and we took seven pheras (rounds) of the holy fire and were declared husband and wife. Geeta took out a lipstick from her purse and asked me to apply it on her maang (parting of the hair) like sindoor (vermilion) to proclaim our marital status.
"Geeta and I were married at last.
"We drove back to Matunga to my grandfather's to seek his blessings. He welcomed us with open arms and blessed us. I then called my parents, who were in Bhopal, to tell them that I was a married man now. They were surprised but happy. We then went to Geeta's parents to inform them of the best thing that had ever happened in the lives of two people in love. They were in for a shock. Geeta hadn't told them anything. She hadn't connected with them since leaving home for work the previous morning. There had been panic in the house as she hadn't returned home at night. They let out a huge sigh of relief when they saw us."...
Months later, Geeta's sister Hardarshan Kaur had narrated what had happened on the morning of August 24, 1955: "When the doorbell buzzed non-stop early in the morning, I had woken up with a start and run to the door, literally trembling. Geeta had not come home at night, so I was very scared. When I opened the door, I saw my sister standing with Shammi, grinning. Seeing my stunned look, they quickly bent down and touched my feet and announced that they had gotten married. I was speechless. As there were no sweets in the house, I ran into the kitchen to get some sugar. When the couple turned, they saw a sweeper standing close by. They bent down and touched her feet as well. We Sikhs believe that if you run into a sweeper while embarking on an important mission, it's a good omen."
(A few years later, recalling the episode, Hardarshan had said, "Marriage to my sister did prove very lucky for Shammi, didn't it? Look how his career took off overnight from nowhere.")

27. “If we get caught I’m blaming you”
Chloe breathes a sigh of relief when Nate comes sulking back to their table, pouting at a disgruntled Elena.
“Okay, fine,” he says when he slumps into his chair between Chloe and Elena. “If you get the candlestick, you win.”
Chloe dips her head and smiles, then, through her curled lashes, she looks up at Nadine. She’s sitting next to Elena, one arm extended over the top of an empty chair, a leg carefully crossed over the other.
“Partner?”
Nadine’s eyes flit to meet hers and her balled up napkin is discarded on the table. She finally flashes a devilish smirk and, Christ, Chloe is infatuated.
“Watch and learn,” Nadine says to Nate, standing in a swift motion. It’s the first thing she’s said to him all night and judging by Nate’s scowl, he knows this too.
“Be back soon,” Chloe sings, patting Nate’s gelled hair. Behind her, she hears Elena snort and an amused “let it go, honey.”
They’re at the wedding of a rich man notorious for hoarding things and doing absolutely nothing with them. Simon Irving had plenty of antiquities that could lead to bigger finds, but he refused to use them, preferring to use them as decor.
An atrocity, honestly. Tonight, they have their sights set on a century old candlestick that the groom-to-be had been boasting about earlier. Apparently, a good addition to his collection of paperweights.
Completely by chance, Nate had been invited to the excessively extravagant wedding and, after months of needling, Chloe had managed to rope him into asking for two more invites.
(He’d told Irving that they were interested in selling a priceless tusk from India, which, for the record, is sitting comfortably in the hands of the Ministry of Culture and has been for the last two years.)
Of course, a bit of friendly competition didn’t hurt anyone, so after being seated, Chloe injured Nate’s ego enough to make him insist on doing the work for her.
Now, Elena’s poking at his wounded ego, looking fantastic as she does, and Nadine’s leading her by the arm to the dance floor.
Chloe’s in a bright red dress, a slit up one leg, and a scooping back. Nadine, stunning as usual, is dressed in a crisp dress shirt tucked tidily into her pants.
“Hm, you look dashing, love,” Chloe says, putting a hand on Nadine’s shoulder.
There’s a crack of a smile, but otherwise, Nadine only squints over her shoulder.
Chloe keeps her eyes on Irving as Nadine leads them through the crowd, weaving through and taking large arcs around the crowded spaces.
The door that leads to the study is located near the stage at the front of the hall, half hidden behind sweeping red curtains draped across the walls.
There’s a staircase that’ll lead to the upper floor and thanks to Irving’s lack of filter, Chloe knows the door to his study is adorned in what must be clear evidence of cultural appropriation.
A guard slips through the door, closing it with a whirring and a click.
“No go,” Chloe murmurs, thumb idly smoothing at the fabric of Nadine’s shirt.
Nadine curses, and like that, they’re off again, making circles around the room.
Only one hallway other than the entrance is open to guests which leads to the bathrooms. They have no choice but to go through there. Nadine lets Chloe hold onto her arm, escorting her, and oh, that’s a bicep, all right.
Inside, a lady is washing her hands, so Chloe lets go of Nadine’s arm and makes for one of the stalls. It’s an awkward moment where Chloe’s hiding out with a toilet and Nadine’s loitering, waiting for the lady to leave, but it dissipates with the lock of a door behind the sound of clicking heels.
“Game plan?” Nadine asks as Chloe comes back out the stall.
“Don’t have one.”
“Didn’t think so,” she says, voice filled with mirth, letting Chloe brush by her to grab onto the sink.
Chloe takes her heels off, leaning sideways, and raises her eyebrows. “Isn’t the study right upstairs?”
She knows the answer, so Nadine doesn’t answer, just takes Chloe’s shoes and rolls her head around on its socket. She hooks the points of the heels into her belt loops and tightens the belt by one hole.
There’s a window at the end of the bathroom, probably popped open because one of the other guests wanted a smoke. Chloe lets her go first, bowing with a twirl of her hand.
“Chivalry at its finest,” Nadine says dryly, peering out the window and, once deemed safe, hoisting herself over the sill.
There’s a row of windows above, too high to grab from where they’re hanging, toes on the thinnest of ledges.
At the edge of the building, before it turns the corner to the front, there’s a gargoyle that they can use as a step up.
Chloe, having climbed out second, is closer, so Nadine cants her head towards the gargoyle. “After you.”
“Chivalry at its finest,” Chloe replies, teasing. She grabs the edge, legs dangling briefly, before heaving herself up. She uses one hand and pinches her dress between her fingers, giving it a little flutter. “Well, if the boys bothered to enjoy the view, it’s right here.”
A couple guards below them share a cigarette, guns slung behind them.
Nadine rolls her eyes, joining Chloe’s height with more grace.
“Show off.” Chloe scoots along the wall, peeking through windows every now and then.
“Out of shape,” Nadine replies, airily.
“Oh, you love my shape.” Chloe tries a window and grunts in annoyance when it doesn’t budge. They shuffle along, prying at one more before a dusty window finally creaks open. “Third times the charm, as they say.”
“All things come in three,” Nadine intones.
Chloe can’t help but smile, pleased.
The room they climb into must be a guest room, guessing by the lack of personal effects. Still, Chloe noses around curiously while Nadine wipes her now-grimy fingers clean with tissues from the fancy tissue box on a nearby desk.
Unhooking them from Nadine’s pants, Chloe helps herself back into her heels.
When they’re both done, Nadine takes the lead. The hallway is empty, but they stick close to the sides, ready to duck into a room if anyone turns the corner.
“Wait,” Chloe says, stopping Nadine with a hand on her elbow. “That look right to you?”
There’s a door decorated by phrases written in a logographic script. Irving is white as they come and, well, that’s certainly not the Starbucks logo.
Nadine closes the door behind her and flips the lights on.
Again, Chloe slinks around the room, like a cat.
Nadine fixes her sleeves, unrolling them so she can refold them up to her elbows. There’s a bunch of candlesticks on the fake fireplace, and she lets Chloe examine them while she takes a blazer off the back of the leather desk chair.
“Why hello, Lumière,” Chloe says, twisting off the bottom part of a candlestick.
Nadine takes the candlestick from Chloe who lets out a huffy “hey!” and uses duct tape from the desk to stick it to the inside of her new blazer.
“Come on, Frazer,” Nadine says, “If we get caught I’m blaming you.”
Chloe wants to protest. Instead, she bites her tongue and helps Nadine into the blazer, brushing the shoulders and arms down.
“Completes the look,” she says, appreciatively.
“You think?” Nadine asks, opening the door. She promptly closes it and plunges them into darkness. “Fuck. Two guards in coming.”
Chloe tugs them into the corner between a shelf and the wall, pressing her front flush against Nadine’s. They can hear each other’s breathing, feel the rise and fall of chests. Chloe could trace a rough outline of the candlestick if she wanted to.
“Heard the bridezilla was thinking of leaving boss,” came the gruff voice of guard number one, muffled by the door.
A thin band of light swept across the room when one of them opens the door.
“No way,” says the other one, into the room, “he’s loaded. If he asked me, I’d marry him too, and just for a cut of his money.”
The lights come on.
Chloe’s pulse jumps. However, she relaxes when a warm hand cups the small of her back, and they somehow sink deeper into the wall.
“True.” It goes dark again, and the door shuts. “Wouldn’t spend any of it on all this dead people shit, though.”
They wait in silence until Chloe can’t hear the sounds of their boots on the hardwood floor. Then, she sighs and pulls back far enough to get a better look at Nadine’s face in the dark.
“That was close,” she whispers.
“Too close,” Nadine agrees.
No one moves. To be fair, Chloe’s practically glued to Nadine, hands on her waist, so Nadine can’t exactly go anywhere.
It’s rare that they’re dolled up like this. It’s not their first time, but when the opportunity arises, Chloe embraces it readily. Part of it is because she likes the fancy dress, but mostly so she can see what Nadine will whip out of her closet next.
In all honesty, she prefers Nadine in dresses, but there’s something to be said about the crisp suits and shiny dress shoes.
Chloe had done Nadine’s eyeliner—which is flawless, thank you very much—and picked the lipstick color, but the application was all on Nadine who is surprisingly adept at the art of makeup.
And this is when Chloe realizes she’s been staring at Nadine’s mouth for the last minute. Nadine’s eyes are dilated. The ticking of Irving’s grandfather clock has her tensing up. The intensity between them only worsens.
Chloe juts her chin out ever so slightly, edging closer.
In the time it takes Chloe to blink, Nadine’s twitching her head to the side and clenching her jaw.
“Let’s go.”
“Oh.” Chloe clears her throat, drawing back jerkily. “Yes. Yeah.”
Nadine smiles blandly in acknowledgment.
This time, they follow the sound of the party, navigating the hallways, and take the stairs down to the first floor. There’s the door at the end that’ll lead to the side of the stage.
Nadine stops short. “We need a keycard to get out.”
“We’re too close to the ground to climb out,” Chloe says. They’d get caught with one leg out the window. The only way is going back down to the bathroom.
The sound of the same two guards making their rounds filters through the chatter from the wedding, causing Nadine to tense up in alarm.
“Nate’s going to enjoy this,” Chloe says, resigned.
“Or,” Nadine says.
“Or?” she prompts.  Nadine sounds unsure, but Chloe’s all ears for pretty much anything that’ll get them out of this.
She clasps Chloe’s wrists in her hands, backing them into the wall by the door, and very deliberately placed Chloe’s palms onto her chest. “Or kiss me.”
It’s a shock to her system, like being dunked in cold water minus the actual dunking or the water. Maybe she’s been knocked over the head and is experiencing some kind of hallucination.
Chloe gathers her wits and manages to nod hastily, neck arching forward to meet Nadine halfway.
They’re kissing just as the guards to round the corner.
A second goes by, maybe two, but it’s enough time for Nadine to weave her fingers into Chloe’s hair and suck at her lip. Chloe can’t really unbutton the blazer and risk exposing the candlestick; all she can do is splay her fingers out to cup Nadine’s breasts.
“Whoa, hey—Hey!”
Chloe follows after Nadine when she pulls back before she remembers what’s happening. Then, she’s staring wide-eyed at the guards storming down the stairs and letting out her most convincing damsel-in-distress shriek.
Nadine winces. Whoops.
“You’re not supposed to be here,” says guard number one. He’s grimacing too. “Neither of you.”
“We—“ Nadine tries to say, but Chloe’s prodding at her front. “What?”
“Zip me up,” she demands, much too loud for a whisper, but too hushed to be anything else. “Come on. I’m so embarrassed. Oh my god.”
The guards are both glaring now, and one of them has his hand on their radio.
Chloe turns and lets Nadine pretend to zip her up. “If Irving sees us, we’re screwed six ways to Sunday.”
“Cry or something,” Nadine hisses.
“You think I can cry on command?” Chloe huffs.
“Fix this. I said I’d blame you and—“
Chloe turns abruptly, crumpling her face into the look of someone on the verge of a breakdown. They should be familiar with it, what with all the talk of the bridezilla. “I’m so, so sorry. I just... We just... We—We really—“
The guards share a glance. “Uh.”
Nadine looks physically pained by where this is going, but she sucks it up and turns with an apologetic look. “So sorry, gentlemen.”
Thankfully, the second guard cuts them off before Chloe can go off on a spiel about their fake yearlong secret romance. “Okay, okay. Stop. Just stay out of here. If you two cause any more trouble for us, we’re going to have to notify Mr. Irving.”
“We won’t make a peep,” Chloe promises, shakily stepping away from Nadine. “It’s because, well...”
The first guard groans softly. “Look, ladies, just get out of here.”
Nadine takes Chloe by the arm and gives the guards a strained smile as they swipe a card across the keypad, holding the door open.
“Again, we’re really sorry,” Nadine says when they’re on the dance floor, turning to the annoyed guards. A closed door is all the response she gets, which is to be expected, but sheesh.
Chloe straightens up immediately and blows a breath out, fixing her hair.
“Whew,” she says, skirting around the dance floor to the bathroom. Everyone’s seated now, but they blend in on the sides with the servers. “That could’ve gone better.”
“Tell me about it,” Nadine mutters, wiping her lipstick off with the back of her hand.
Checking her makeup in the mirror, Chloe wipes at the edges of her lips and adjusts the stray hairs over her face. She studies Nadine from the mirror. “Think you can ditch the blazer?”
“Best not.”
Nadine lets Chloe pry her hands from her face and clean the lipstick off for her. They’re awfully close. Fingers trail along Nadine’s chin, and she swipes a tongue across her bottom lip.
Chloe inhales, sharply. “Nadine, love,” she murmurs. “You better not kiss me right now.”
Eyebrows raised, she meets Chloe’s eyes. “Why not?”
“I just fixed my bloody lipstick, for one,” Chloe says.
The live band from the party is muffled by the door, adding that something to the atmosphere, and Nadine’s looking endlessly amused. Really, it would be a disservice not to kiss her, so Chloe does.
Nadine’s mouth is warm and compliant under her’s, and this time Nadine takes care not to mess up her hair. It’s softer than the one in the hallway, more delicate. This is something more suited for a first kiss.
They part for a fleeting moment so Chloe can nudge Nadine into the wall by the sinks, and then they’re kissing again. She has no qualms with undoing Nadine’s blazer, slipping her hands over Nadine’s midriff with the candlestick resting on the back of her hand.
“Someone’s keen,” she whispers into the space between their mouths after she pulls back a bit to grin. “Is that a candlestick in your pocket or—“
Nadine cuts her off with a scoff pressed to her mouth, scraping at Chloe’s lower lip with her teeth.
She’s cupping Chloe’s cheeks, pressing in more, when there’s a slam and— “Oh, Christ!”
Both of their heads snap to the door, to a gobsmacked Elena Fisher.
“Come on, Elena,” Chloe says, miffed. “Close the door.”
Elena does her one better by twisting the lock, too. Nadine only blinks and looks away, once again wiping her face.
“We saw you guys come in here after getting caught and, well,” Elena stops there and ends up gesturing vaguely.
Now, Nadine smirks. “Tell your husband that we win.”
Chloe narrows her eyes at Elena’s purse. “Hey, can we fit a candlestick in that?”
“Sure.” Elena shrugs, letting Chloe have at it. It was expensive, but she’s never been too touchy about getting nice things dirty. “I’ve also got lipstick in there. Just saying. You know, if you needed.”
There’s a pointed look along with that, and Chloe huffs out a laugh.
Elena patiently waits for them to wrap up; it’s not much, just reapplication and stuffing the blazer into the bin.
They leave the wedding before the ceremony even begins, barely eight in the evening. Chloe doesn’t think the bride will follow through and, honestly, good for her.
With a butthurt Nate acting as a body pillow for Elena in the backseat, and Nadine riding shotgun as per usual, they hit the road back home. It’s an hour drive to Nate’s and thirty from there to the hotel they’re staying at, so they drop Nate and Elena off along the way.
“That was fun,” Chloe says after they’ve parked. The candlestick sits in the cup holder between them.
She nods. “It was.”
Chloe turns to face Nadine. “We...” She bites her lip, frowns a little, and weighs the candlestick in her hand. “This’ll probably take us to Europe somewhere.”
Nadine hums, not really caring, as long as there’s a payoff and they’re both alive to receive it.
Neither of them says anything for a while. They’re secluded, and it only worsens the prickly sensation of another shoe about to drop.
It feels strange, even though they’ve been alone in many different cars in many different situations before.
“Switch to a suite,” Nadine finally says.
It’s out of nowhere and not exactly something that would woo Chloe’s socks off, but she grins anyway. Nadine notices and her eyes twinkle under the blue-ish parking lot lights, lips curving. “What?”
“Oh, nothing,” Chloe says. “Don’t worry a thing, china.”
Nadine clasps a hand to the back of Chloe’s neck and twists over the dashboard to kiss her.
Picture this: them, kissing in a parked car underneath a Marriott, hands against hot skin. The scene is something neither of them will forget.

Betaal Netflix Series Review, Download, Release Date, Cast, Trailer, and More
Tumblr media
Netflix and Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies are coming together for their second collaboration after Bard of Blood last year. Releasing this week is Betaal, which is arguably the first zombie horror series out of India. It follows a counter-insurgency force that's attacked by a cursed undead British officer and his officers as they try to excavate a blocked tunnel. Betaal comes from the makers of Ghoul in Patrick Graham, who's the showrunner, co-director, and co-writer, and the studio Blumhouse, known for low-budget horror films such as Get Out and Paranormal Activity. Nikhil Mahajan (Baji) and Suhani Kanwar (Lipstick Under My Burkha) serve as director and writer alongside Graham, who has previously worked with Kanwar on the Netflix dystopian series Leila. For Netflix, Betaal will be the fifth original series from India in 2020, after the Jharkhand-based phishing drama Jamtara in January, the romantic drama Taj Mahal 1989 in February, the Imtiaz Ali-created crime drama She in March, and the Vir Das-led dark comedy Hasmukh in April. With Betaal out this weekend, here's all you need to know about the Netflix series, from review to cast. From Paatal Lok to Snowpiercer, TV Shows to Watch in May
Betaal Netflix release date
Betaal is out — on the day of Eid — Sunday, May 24 at 12:30pm on Netflix in India. As always, you will have the option to download all episodes. Betaal has a total of four episodes, each with a runtime around 50 minutes.
Betaal meaning
Betaal — also written as “Betal” — is the anglicised form of the Marathi word “बेताळ”, which is a folk deity worshipped in the western Konkan region of India. But for the purposes of the show, Betaal is drawn from the Sanskrit word “वेताल” / “Vetala”, which refers to reanimated corpses — that's zombies — who reside in charnel grounds and predict fortunes.
Betaal Netflix trailer
Netflix released the first and only trailer for Betaal in the second week of May, which set up the zombie horror series' premise and introduced its primary characters.
Betaal Netflix cast
Viineet Kumar (Mukkabaaz) leads the Betaal cast as Vikram Sirohi, the second-in-command of the Baaz squad of the CIPD (Counter Insurgency Police Department). In a mailed statement, Kumar said: “We had to undergo physical training, as one cannot carry this uniform without training and knowing how to give and receive commands. There were different knives and guns training as well, how to take position, formations etc. Many times, people would have bruises on their elbows and knees after the training.” Aahana Kumra (Lipstick Under My Burkha) stars alongside on Betaal as DC “Ahu” Ahluwalia (Aahana Kumra). She's the one with that huge scar on the right side of her face. Kumra said: “I was both terrified and excited by the idea of wearing a prosthetic piece since I've never done it before. The scar is so central to Ahlu's character. It speaks volumes about her, it makes you realise that there is a lot more to Ahlu's story than meets the eye. She has had a difficult past and has not yet lost hope.” Also part of the Betaal cast are Suchitra Pillai (Karkash) as Commandant Tyagi, the leader of the CIPD; Jitendra Joshi (Sacred Games) as Ajay Mudhalvan, a political fixer of sorts; Manjiri Pupala (Party) as Puniya, a tribal woman; and Syna Anand (Mere Pyare Prime Minister) as Ajay's daughter, Saanvi Mudhalvan. There are supporting roles for Jatin Goswami (Babumoshai Bandookbaaz) as Assad Akbar, Siddharth Menon (Chhappad Phaad Ke) as Nadir Haq, Yashwant Wasnik (Bajirao Mastani) as Sarpanch, and Savita Bajaj (Uski Roti) as Mausi. Puniya is among those village folk caught between the zombies and the CIPD. On her role, she said: “Shooting for a horror-thriller like Betaal has been a really great experience. I am essaying the role of a tribal woman who is consumed by anger and hatred for the CIPD which eventually leads to an interesting turn of events. It's a very compelling character and without giving away much all I can say is watch out for Betaal and the monster within us.” Mrs. Serial Killer, The Imitation Game, Room, and More on Netflix in May Betaal synopsis “While on a mission to displace the natives of Campa forest in order to build a highway, Sirohi and his squad unwittingly unleash the curse of Betaal mountain. A remote village quickly becomes the arena of a breathless battle when a two-century-old East India Company Colonel, infected with Betaal's curse, and his battalion of blood-thirsty zombie redcoats are released from their tomb, attacking anything with a pulse. The CIPD forces are pitted against the undead army that wreaks havoc on the people and threatens to end civilisation as we know it.”

These Photos Reveal The Truth About Human Slavery
In the photograph in front of me, there is bare-chested middle-aged white guy with his arm over the shoulder of a beaming black girl, who looks quite a bit younger.
Layla Love, who shot this picture on a volcanic sand beach in Cameroon in Central Africa, knew that the guy was a German sex trafficker. She and her (hefty) driver told the girl her destination was not the banana plantation where she had been promised a job and took her back to her village.
Love was 21, and a student at the American International University in Richmond, not far from London. This shot launched her onto a pictorial investigation into human trafficking and slavery that she has been continuing ever since.
Some of what she has come up with can be seen at 'Rise,' a show of her work at 555 West 25th Street in New York City. (I am listed as a curator, rather generously, because Love did all the heavy lifting herself.)
Another picture shows four alert young women, three wearing bunny ears, standing in front of an ATM machine. Love got the shot two years ago in Tenancingo, which is a town south-west of Mexico City nicknamed Pimp City. Theres a festival every year, she said. A parade. Its kind of a Mardi Gras for traffickers.
She shot the torso of a young man in a house in Bosnia, It was all boys in there, Love recalled. They looked drugged. Some had lipstick on. I just walked in, looking like a lost girl, and started taking pictures. Nobody tried to stop her.
A picture of two composed-looking young Asian women, Love said, was taken in the Woman Love Market in Kyoto, Japan. They are locked in their rooms at night.
Why dont they try to escape? The guys have guns on them. They say theyll kill their mothers, their sisters.
The hellish photographic tour continued. One picture showed a man sticking his arm out of a cage in Rajasthan, India.
Two tiny boys in another picture are orphans that are being sexualized. That was in Bosnia in 2006.
Another two infants are pictured "in a brothel in Calcutta. The mothers are prostitutes.
This was in Egypt. They are put to work when they are a few years old, beating leather with chemicals to soften it in the hot sun
An image of a horrifically sightless black woman was taken "in the south of Chad. She blinded herself. They are no use in the sex traffic in Chad if they are blind. Sometimes they blind their children too.
Thats labor trafficking," Love said of an image of some children. "This was in Egypt. They are put to work when they are a few years old, beating leather with chemicals to soften it in the hot sun."
What of the photograph of a young woman with the much written-upon body? I shot that in Compton in Los Angeles County, Love said. She had been raped since she was seven. She was trafficked by her cousin. That was the worst story I heard.
This is the ugliest material you can imagine, and an extremely raw and immediate form of reportage. Its like Ive been studying this my whole life, Love said. Its been a lifelong obsession. Like espionage. So I started a non-profit two years ago.
Its called The Rise of the Butterfly, but is hardly alone out there. In 2000 the UN announced a Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, which is often referred to as the Palermo Protocol, and, as of last September, 171 of the 192 member states of the UN had given it their support.
The Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST), one of a number of global NGOs who focus on the issue, state that: "Human Trafficking is the fastest growing criminal enterprise of the 21st century, an estimated $150 billion industry that is second only to drugs in terms of organized crime."
The source for their statistics is a paper published by the International Labour Organization in 2014.
Similarly, the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) notes that human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. It is tied with arms trafficking as the second largest criminal industry in the world, after drug trafficking.
Most studies agree that at last two thirds of the business is sexual, that it is routine for children of 12 or far younger to be swallowed into it, and that the rest is labor slavery
Other numbers are as darkly illuminating. Voices 4 Freedom, another NGO, estimates that forty million individuals were experiencing slavery on any given day in 2016, that 71 percent of them were female, and that one in four was a child.
The Global Slavery Index, an annual study published by the Walk Free Foundation, puts the 2016 total of 45.8 million people, including 57,700 in the United States.
Most studies agree that at last two thirds of the business is sexual, that it is routine for children of 12 or far younger to be swallowed into it, and that the rest is labor slavery, like those kids pounding hides in Egypt.
The first two facts in "11 Facts about trafficking," a document put out by the non profit, Do Something Org, are that 1: Globally, the average cost of a slave is $90 and 2: Trafficking primarily involves exploitation which comes in many forms, including: forcing victims into prostitution, subjecting victims to slavery or involuntary servitude and compelling victims to commit sex acts for the purpose of creating pornography.
There is not much doubt about Fact 2 but there is less agreement about Fact 1, or indeed about many of the given statistics, but this is understandable. Statistics can be variable the price of a human being can be way higher and, if the purported slaves are being held in the United States or Western Europe, some may ask, why they don't try to escape?
There are a slew of answers to these questions, including legal intimidation, as with undocumented immigrants, and as with the slew of recent cases involving battered wives insidious shackles on the mind.
Our first problem when we started fighting slavery in 1999, 2000, was that people didnt even believe it existed, said Peggy Callahan, a Los Angeles based documentary film producer.
At one point the average price of someone in slavery was $48. People have become so inexpensive that its horrifying
She discovered the subject by way of a book, Disposable People, by Kevin Bales. He did all the original research, she said. At one point the average price of someone in slavery was $48. People have become so inexpensive that its horrifying.
At the time of the slave trade destroyed by President Lincoln a human being cost the equivalent today of $40,000, Callahan said. So, it was as inhumane then as now, but clearly slave owners might be motivated to protect their capital investment. But when people cost $90 or whatever it is, they get used up and thrown away, Callahan said.
Callahan tracked down the Oklahoma-born Bales at the London School of Economics.
I called him and told him we should start an international movement on slavery," Callahan said. "I dont know if he thought I was a California fruit-loop or a godsend. I dont know if he knows yet.
The duo have launched two groups, Free The Slaves and Voices 4 Freedom. I decided to go and document it in villages in countries all over the world, and then share it free of charge," said Callahan. "Because most video costs between 60 and 80 dollars a second to buy.
At Love's show the slavery pictures are raw but there are also luminous pictures images of recovery, life, health, pleasure.
According to the International Labour Organization statistics, there were 5.4 slaves to every 1,000 people in 2014.
Theres more slavery in the world today than at any other time in human history, Callahan said. But its actually a smaller percentage of the population. So its horrifying. And yet it is actually getting better, because of all the pressures that can be put on governments and because theres no government that relies on slavery. We actually have a shot at ending it forever.
