-telling both his children that they had equal chances of being king one day, then preferring the older son, who happens to be of his own blood, over the one that probably spent his whole life preparing to be able to rule a realm instead of running around fighting monsters like someone else 

 I mean he did only get third place, so he's still the best parent of them all, but he did in the end only save Loki in the first place to USE him, so that's mainly what got him that spot xD the other two are in a completely different league of shitty parenting if that's any comfort xD “ 

okay so 

1. would you have rather had odin leave loki to die? loki was cast out by laufey because he was a runt, and if odin hadn’t taken him, he would’ve died 100%. odin then took him into his own household, made him a prince, and would have put him on the jotun throne to rule his own people and have the Jotuns interact more peacefully with the asgardians if loki hadn’t literally tried to commit genocide. 

also considering how we see thor and the rest of the asgardian crew react to the jotuns, having it be known that loki was himself a jotun is super dangerous to his safety. should loki himself have been told? yes, and that is both odin AND frigga’s fault, not just odin’s. 

we also never see odin treat thor and loki differently. both were raised the same way and, subsequently, both turned out as assholes because odin and frigga spoiled them. odin throws thor down to midgard where he learns his lesson. loki throws himself into space and then surfaces on midgard to kill people, and when he does eventually stand before odin for trial, he isn’t executed. had anyone other than loki gone out and killed hundreds of people, they would have been executed. loki gets a pass bc his parents still love him, but obviously they’re not happy with him.

2. the odinsleep is something that happens without odin’s permission; it doesn’t wait for him to say “okay yeah now’s a good time to fall unconscious for a week” like it just does its own thing. in the original thor script, they’re very clear that odin had been trying to put off the odinsleep, so loki shouting at him actually probably put him under enough stress that his body finally gave in to it

3. you pointed out earlier that odin took loki so that he could appoint him to the jotun throne so saying odin never expected to make him a king is contradictory. odin always intended for both of his sons to be kings--loki being king of jotunheim and thor being king of asgard. his vision was for the two realms to finally come together as allies under his kids. 

and loki letting in jotuns to nearly kill his father and who knows how many other citadel guards--all to be petty ... not king material, like it’s just not sorry!

4. rewatch the footage from thor (2011) again mayhaps because the scene of odin cradling baby loki when he’s screaming and obviously in distress--it’s obviously not coming from a place of manipulation. he genuinely cares about loki when he finds him, and if he can bring peace to both realms on top of that, then how is that a bad thing?
