Dustpaw and Sandpaw gossiping in the apprentice’s den, probably about how smelly Gray, Fire, and Raven are. In my AU Dust still has a little crush on Sand, but it doesn’t stop them from being close and it fades away before they become warriors, I am changing it so that he isn’t Ferncloud’s uncle. (Yucky)

I use @bonefall ‘s gender roles, molly, tom, and gib for my AU but transitioning between is acceptable and fairly common.

He’s always been closer to mollies than toms, he takes some bullying from his second mentor Darkstripe about as well as Tigerstar. Which is why he redirects his feelings into his beef with Firepaw. Longtail would tease him occasionally but didn’t discourage his interests. When Dust finishes his initial apprenticeship Longtail and Sandstorm encourage him to pursue extra training as a camp keeper which is typically done by mollies. He’s protective and doesn’t wander, he’s not super assertive and shows the typical tom behavior of not arguing or participating in major drama.

Sand is in a similar boat, she doesn’t behave like a typical molly and is much more interested in border patrols and hunting. Anything that involves roaming around the territory and socially stimulating, which is a very Tom-like behavior. However she’s not passive, quick to argue and assert her opinion whenever possible. Since she’s so quick to pick a fight, most cats don’t pick on her for it, but that doesn’t stop rumors and whispers about her being too ‘unreliable’ since she’s always wandering.

That’s why they get along so well, they both behave atypically of their assigned genders showing a mix of Tom and molly, but neither display behavior of Gib-ness or desire to transition.

Gosh imagining the dynamic between grandpa Shriketail and Jayfeather makes me love Longfire even more-

Like their similarities and how Shrike/Long could help Jay get over his internalized ableism seen in the books, and instill the fight in Jay to get what he wants. Jay feelings deemed always being put with Brightheart and Shrike/Longtail only to realize these two were the strongest warriors because they learned to work with and know how to cope with their disabilities. Ofc Bright and Long aren’t in the exact same boat as they were injured later in life while Jay grew up blind but bc he was so young he also learned to hate his shortcomings from the cats around him, not letting him be a warrior, always pitying and babying him, openly talking about whether he could ever have a happy life.

At first I wanted Jay to immediately feel a lot less insecure about his blindness because of Shrike, but I really like the idea of him having an arc about it and overcoming his internalized ablism over time!

I think that though Thunder has had plenty of experience with disabled cats, (especially deaf ones since they have had three existing at the same time) they still have issues with ablism! I think that the Order could still really baby Jay because he was born blind, and maybe the Order is unsure of how to teach him to be a warrior due to him never having had vision!

I think Shrike would have stood up for him a lot and tried to fight for Jay, but from Jay’s young baby brain perspective, he views this a demeaning to him, he doesn't want to be stood up for, that would mean he’s weak! 

I think he would feel like everyone thinks lowly of him, and he lashes out and copies what he experiences, thinking lowly of other disabled cats and not wanting to be like them. But over time he learns that that is bullshit, and the disabled cats of the Order are the strongest ones here! And its okay to accept your disability and not be exactly like non disabled cats (I feel like Jay tries really hard to be a “normal” cat rather than accepting that he is disabled, which holds him back from fully learning the right techniques to be a warrior) 

Jay could have a dark forest trainee arc too, and realize and learn respect for his mentor and grandfather, which would lead him to quitting the DF! 

I want him to still become a Healer, but I think he would over time come want to be a healer on his own, and be in denial about that fact because he is so determined to prove himself as a warrior and he thinks that choosing to be a Healer would be viewed as him giving up. He ends up choosing to train as a Healer last minute right before his warrior ceremony!

We went to a big lake that was made by a hydroelectric dam. The water was very blue and the mountains were very steep and high. We took a longtail boat to a floating camp and had some tasty lunch. We fed the fish some bread and went swimming. We made some new friends with some kids from the UK.
