Saw a post a while ago about trans characters in anime and OP included a certain character from BNHA, and while I elected not to respond to that post at the time I now regret it but I can’t find it anymore so anyway
Tumblr media
[Image: a picture of Tiger from the Wild, Wild Pussycats pro hero team; he has large, exaggerated muscles and other exaggerated masculine features such as broad shoulders, thick muscles, a goatee, and a square jaw and is wearing a skirt and crop top as part of his hero costume. End description.]
that’s a transmisogynistic caricature. I really don’t care that he’s supposed to be a trans man, that’s a transmisogynistic caricature. There are ways to do gender non-conforming trans men in a way that’s not transmisogynistic, and this isn’t it.
I mean, for full disclosure I haven’t watched more than fragments of the arc he appears in, but I know enough to know that he and the rest of the Wild, Wild Pussycats are joke characters, and are you honestly going to tell me that a muscular guy in a skirt was intended as anything but a joke? Are you really going to tell me that this character was created with the intention of providing honest rep to gender non-conforming trans guys, when the same author drew a canon trans woman like this:
Tumblr media
[Image: Magne from Boku no Hero Academia, a canon trans woman villain, wearing jeans and a shirt, with exaggerated lips, and pronounced masculine features such as a square jaw, broad shoulders, and stubble. End description.]
Tumblr media
[Image: cropped manga panel of Magne, showing her in a dress with pigtails, still with her exaggerated masculine features (which are even more pronounced now). End description.]
Like, please tell me how Tiger is any different from this:
Tumblr media
[Image: the Mermaid Sisters from Carole and Tuesday, a trio of singers who are obvious transmisogynistic stereotypes, having bright pink lipstick and dresses, while also having mustaches and a goatee, along with other exaggerated masculine features. End description.]
or this
Tumblr media
[Image: Garfiel from Fullmetal Alchemist, who’s a homophobic/transmisogynistic caricature, with exaggerated masculine features, hairy arms, stubble, and with obvious feminine mannerisms and lipstick. End description.]
or this, which literally popped up when I searched ‘transmisogyny caricature’:
Tumblr media
[Image: cartoon drawing of a transmisogynistic caricature of a trans woman with obvious exaggerated masculine features (a square jaw particularly), while wearing red lipstick and wearing a dress that says ‘Am I a dude?’. She’s walking next to a sign reading ‘SKANK-X-ING’. End description.]
(photo from this article on transmisogyny in the comic where the picture is from.)
Guys, I get that we’re all starved for rep, but trans men (and all other non-transfem trans people) are not allowed to claim a transmisogynistic caricatures as positive representation for trans men (or, again, any other non-transfem trans person). Full stop.
I’m not transfem so call me out if I’ve spoken out of turn or misconstrued something, but calling out transmisogyny is something all trans people (or actually, everyone ever) should do, and this seems to be really blatant.
