stayed up to watch the fionna and cake finale and was not quite disappointed, but maybe a little underwhelmed. mainly it felt rushed on the character side of things. like i couldve had the scarab fight be half as long, or spent a little less time with shermie and beth, so that there was more time to focus on stuff like fionna and cake being at odds about simon becoming ice king again, or simon and betty's whole thing. the entire casper and nova section, and to some extent simon's monologue in front of golbetty, just seemed to spell out what could already be picked up if you were looking, ie that simon let betty pour herself out for him, that their relationship was true but unsustainable, and that simon, if he didnt end up putting on the crown, would have to reach the point where he started valuing his own life again. etc. (idk though. watch me say this and then realize later that there were more subtleties that totally flew over my head.) it just seemed to happen fast and slow at the same time. i did tear up when simon and betty were talking at the bus station, it was poignant and resonated with my anxieties about like. paths not taken and the ways we hurt people we love without realizing it and recognizing the beautiful experience that something can be even if it doesnt last. i do love a codependent tragic relationship so petrigrof of course has a chokehold on me--im glad that simon got closure. but again it felt both rushed and dragged out at the same time
other things...visually the nova and casper section was very fun, really liked the chunky 3d look of it. reminded me of louie zong's work. it's so cute that simon and fionna are texting buddies. also nice to have scarab live with prismo to pay his dues, although i wish he had been less one-note in the end. might have forgotten stuff but he seems very static in his motivations/goals, which isnt bad or anything, but that development right at the very end comes a little out of nowhere. is farmworld finn ok :(( did jay leave his family with or without the knowledge theyd be taken care of :(( also i respect that the original at cast has a limited role in f&c, their story having been completed, but its a shame that at the end we dont get to see more of marcy (whos backstory is intertwined with simon's, and who he failed to connect with at the beginning of the series) and finn (who is also grieving in his own way).
