With the release of RWRB’s movie premier date, here are some of my crackish predictions about the worst way CO could be adopted into a movie:
They combine Agatha and Penny’s character and make her white, but Dev and Niall stay separate characters (also both white)
Fiona is played by an actress younger than Baz
Baz’s widow’s peak has to be CGI’ed in
Simon’s hair is blonde and not curly
Simon gets wings but no tail
The Mage is played by Daniel Craig and Colin Firth plays Malcolm and Christina never sleeps again because she’s too busy writing malmage for the rest of her life
Lucy’s ghost isn’t included
They never mention Professor Minos; a tragedy
No fireplace kiss
They combine Mitali and Mrs Wellbelove’s characters and never explain it even though they’re married to two different men
In fact they add in an original male character with no plot relevance, who is also white
Ebb stills dies

So, inspired by a recent first time viewing (how did i make it this long? No good answers) of The Holiday, I now present to you my Christmas gift to the internet
A Comprehensive Ranking of Romcom Sweaters by Sadness
Join me in an exploration of the knitwear of these dreamy eyed seekers of love, hearts full and arms covered! Their faith: true. Their choices: frequently bad. Their necks: cold.
Two notes before I begin! First- a lot of my very serious research came from the When Romance Met Comedy series of essays by @carolinesiede This series is one of my favorite things on the internet and you should all check it out
Second- my love for this genre is deep and sincere, as is my love for sweaters. Those who dismiss either out of hand may see themselves out.
OK LET'S DO THIS
0/10 Clueless

Tumblr media
None percent sadness. Your hair is thick and shining, your schemes are manifold and successful, Daddy's sucky Italian roast is doing exactly what you intended. Let your arms bask in the sun in your sweater vest of youthful triumph.
(Note- the presence of sweaters in teen romcoms are rare. Sweaters are for olds. A teen wearing a sweater is generally a nerd, a cynic, or a cynical nerd. Just another reason why Cher Horowitz is an icon.)
1/10 When Harry Met Sally...
Tumblr media
Only a slight tinge of melancholy. Sure, Sally's been on some bad dates recently and she could probably stand to get laid. But it's autumn in New York and she's a fucking avatar of emotional well-adjustment. The sweater is perfectly fitted and perfectly tucked. God, she's in such great shape.
+100 bonus points for Crystal serving proto Chris Evans in Knives Out realness
2/10 While You Were Sleeping
Tumblr media
This ranking may appear controversially low, as Lucy Eleanor Moderatz is pretty fucking sad. She is alone at Christmas. Her beloved father is dead and she's fantasizing about an asshole she sees once a day from a public transit token booth. But you guys. This sweater. I've been searching for this sweater since 1995. It's enormous, yet beautifully shaped. It's the platonic ideal of coziness. SHE CAN LITERALLY HIDE PRESENTS IN HER SLEEVES. Sandy B is getting a break on the rent and peak Bill Pullman is about to lean over her, she's doing fine.
3/10 Bridget Jones Diary
Tumblr media
Not great, but not precisely sad. Mark Darcy is at a shitty party wearing a dumb sweater and is about to thoughtlessly fuck up his romantic life. But his parents aren't the most embarrassing in the room, and he's got wine and gherkins. Things could be much worse.
4/10 Practical Magic

Tumblr media
The sadness of Sally Owens is legion, but she cried in her PJ's and she's got more pressing concerns now. She's got daughters to take care of and a thriving skincare business to run and an undead rapist to send to hell. This is a sweater that acknowledges that your sister is a glamorous fuck up with terrible taste in men, and then is ready to get down to business. It's lightly fitted, with the breathing room for serious magicks.
(Maybe rethink the hair clips tho)
5/10 (500) Days Of Summer

Tumblr media
This is where things start to take a turn for the more majorly sad. Tom is pretty pathetic. This is the saggy, washed out cardigan of a man who thinks that liking The Smiths is a meaningful character trait. It needs to be lain flat to dry, and so does Tom. But he still gets up in the morning, puts on a tiny tie, and goes to work. His depression is functional, and so is his sweater.
6/10 The Holiday- Cammy D edition
youtube
Amanda is sad in the way that only the thin, unhinged, and inexplicably wealthy can be. She has no friends. She doesn't know how to pronounce esophageal. The pristine whiteness of this cable knit is terrifying; the reckless abandon with which she waves a glass of pinot in front of it, even more so. You know that shit is dry clean only. Truly, a sadness touched with insanity.
7/ 10Love Actually, Colin Firth
Tumblr media
The heaviest, darkest, most turtley-necked sweater to wear on a sadness vacation, sorry writer's retreat, in fucking France. What kind of whiny sack falls in love with someone with whom he cannot communicate at the most basic level? She's in her underwear, he's in an itchy monstrosity 3 sizes too big. This plot line can eat me like that collar is eating his chin.
8/10 Breakfast at Tiffany's
Tumblr media
Who gave Holly Golightly the right to be so sad and look so good?? I spent my twenties sobbing on dozens of fire escapes and never came close. In a movie of iconic fashion, this sweatshirt is pre-American Apparel nonsense. Her soul is empty, but her hamper is apparently full because that's some laundry day shit. Her sad sweater is so sad, it trudged north and grew a depressive turban companion.
9/10 High Fidelity and Love Actually
Tumblr media

Aka the asshole division. Above, a terrible boyfriend turned into a worse ex boyfriend in the worst fucking sweater I've ever seen. It's a Cosby sweater.  A COSBY SWEATER. And below, a creep who turned filming his best friend's wedding into an opportunity to stalk and who keeps that video WITH THE REST OF HIS REGULAR VIDEOS AND IS THAT A DETACHABLE COLLAR?? At least Rob exhibits some growth, Stalker McGee over there gets a kiss on the cheek and a pat on the ass from his movie. These guys are jerks and their sweaters are terrible.
10/10 The Holiday- Kate Winslet edition

Tumblr media
The nadir of sartorial desperation. Like its wearer, Iris' sweater has given up. It has no color, no shape, and no options. It is a formless mass that won't even keep your neck warm, thereby necessitating The Stringy Scarf of Sadness. It is literally a sweater in which to contemplate suicide. Thank god Eli Wallach is waiting in the wings, because this is as bad as it gets.
Ok, I'm gonna go watch While You Were Sleeping. THANK YOU AND GOOD NIGHT

Education: Savannah double majored in Gender Studies and Cordonian History. Her dissertation concerned how Queen Annelyse Adair and Valentina Greaves queered Queen Kenna Rys’ narrative journey during her relinquishment of Stormholt in the Great War of the Five Kingdoms. Previous essays are “Dressed to Kill: Annelyse Adair and Femininity on the Battlefield” and “Bad Women: Hex and Azura’s Quest for Pure Nations”. While Drake preferred a simpler occupation and thus dropped out, Savannah has a thirst for knowledge and ended up graduating with Honours. Bottom line: She is not just a party girl, she is an intellectual party girl.
Personality: Feisty, determined, outspoken, enthusiastic, impulsive, romantic at heart, sexually liberated, imprudent, rather sensitive, prone to violence when provoked, hapless, hoydenish, has a taste for luxury and has a heart of gold (if you deserve it)
Favourite food(s): Eclairs, Spanish paella, mushroom risotto and lobster linguine.
Least favourite food(s): Green tea (she prefers floral or fruit teas and macchiatos), Cordonian Rubies (only eats them if they are baked and sweetened) and cronuts (sorry, Maxwell, they are too sickly for her)
Favourite drink(s): Double chocolate macchiato with whipped cream, blackberry tea, jello shots, tequila, white wine, champagne and whiskey. (She holds her liquor better than Drake and is often their designated driver and caretaker.)
Favourite book(s): This is an impossible question for her because she is a voracious reader, but it has to be a toss-up between Marguerite Duras’ The Lover and Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. Savannah gravitates towards magical realism, romance, erotica and the philosophical and feminist.
Favourite poet(s): Christina Rosetti, John Donne, Sappho, John Wilmot the Earl of Rochester and Anne Sexton.
Favourite TV show(s): The Crown and the Flame! She ships Raydan and Kenna and Dom and Sei. Her role model in life is Annelyse Adair and she hopes and prays for a new season. Maxwell is trying to get her into Most Wanted but she thinks the hiatus is heart breaking.
Favourite Disney movie(s): Aristocats, The Fox and Hound, Tangled, Brave, Moana and Fantasia.
Style: Savannah has two moods: girlish, floral and vintage and sexy, man-killer little black/red/white dresses with striking lipstick
Horoscope: Libra
Kink(s): Savannah is a slut for older men (ahem, look who her lover is), BDSM, erotic asphyxiation and being dominated/dominant. She loves men in suits too and enjoys exhibitionism.
Favourite body part(s): Proud of her lips, boobs and legs. Wishes her ass was slightly perkier and shapelier.
Talent(s): She is a confident, devil may care dancer, has a head for dates and timelines, is adept in academic writing and finds it easy to communicate with strangers and network effectively.
Party trick: She can deep throat a champagne bottle and suck the cork out.
Proudest moment(s): Punching Tariq in the face and breaking his nose. Tariq is afraid of her. Moreover, presenting her dissertation at an international conference on Women in Cordonian History. Also, getting Bertrand to weaken enough for him to open to her.
Lowest moment(s): Running out crying after a Beaumont Bash (reasons still undefined), throwing up on Bertrand after drinking too much (this is not said reason) and having Imposter Syndrome while completing her dissertation
Pet peeve(s): Sexists, misogynists, racists, homophobes, prejudiced minded people, elitists, cold tea, ignorance, male chauvinism, misandrists, people who try to explain feminism to her, animal abusers and Tariq.
Favourite animal(s): Kittens, puppies, hamsters, dwarf rabbits, mouse lemurs, sugar gliders and peacocks
Favourite music: Indie, rock, classical and emo.
Celebrity crush(es): Rufus Sewell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kit Harrington, Colin O’Donoghue, Peter Capaldi, Colin Firth and Jeremy Irons
Favourite movie(s): Bridget Jones trilogy, Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula, Crimson Peak, Alice in Wonderland, Midnight in Paris, Mad Max, anything by Studio Ghibli and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Personal secret: She is helpless in riding a bicycle.
Intimate secret: If a guy bites her ass during oral, she goes nuts.
Deep dark secret: She is a great believer of the ten second rule when it comes to food.
Deepest fantasy: To be tied up and blindfolded and have the man/woman do whatever he or she wants with her. Also, to be fucked in a confessional booth. And, a foursome with Kenna, Annelyse and Valentina.
Favourite position: Sideways from behind gets her all the time.
Cuddling: Yes. Absolutely, yes. She gets needy afterwards.
Great ambition: To be a professor at her alma mater, to compile an anthology of the missing narratives in Kenna’s pilgrimage and to travel with the man of her dreams by her side (Bertrand, why did you fuck up?)
Greatest fear(s): Loss. Dark silence. Failure. Being stuck in a rut.
What she looks for in a man: Confidence, an element of mystique and power, a soft centre in a hard cocoon, V-lines, treasure trails and strong jawline. She loves hands too. Intellectualism as well and if he is well-read, she is all for him. Had the biggest crush on Raydan for the longest time.
What she looks for in a woman: Delicate yet voluptuous bodies. She loves shy types, but a wild girl is always fun. Girls with tongue piercings get her going. Girls with gorgeous wavy hair and a good butt. Sweet, loving, adventurous and willing to learn girls are the way to go. HC that she has gone all the way with Kaitlyn Liao.
Tattoos or piercings: She wears earrings and has “Carpe Diem” tattooed on her hip in elegant cursive. She has a tiny rose tattoo on the inside of her ankle.
Believes in: Feminism, LGBTQA, religion as being a guider of virtue rather than restrictive conventions, that whiskey is sometimes better than vodka and that age is but a number in relationships. Also, one cannot have too many pets and children should be reserved as an option, not a target in life. Also, true love will come if you are willing to make what you have now, the love you share with the person you know you love, become true and deep and eternal.

‘You’ll never work again’: women tell how sexual harassment broke their careers
Actors, writers, assistants, comedians and journalists speak out about the toll that sexual assault and harassment in the workplace took on their futures
As women come forward with accusations of sexual harassment in politics, media, entertainment and other fields, following the flood of allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, it is striking how many of their stories share the same ending.
Either the alleged abuse, the victims refusal to stay quiet, or both, slams the door on critical job opportunities and puts a serious sometimes terminal dent in her career. In some cases the victim never works in her industry again.
We spoke to a number of women who have come forward about the costs that sexual harassment imposed on their futures and careers. As society debates what sort of consequences should befall their alleged abusers, it is clear that these women have already suffered a penalty.
There are coming to be consequences for those actions, but its too little too late, said one of the women, former DC Comics editor Janelle Asselin. For the people who were harassed and assaulted, the consequences are something weve been living with for years.
The comic-book editor
The longer I read comics, the more I feel the possibilities are limitless, said Asselin, reflecting on her time as an editor at the publishing powerhouse behind Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and big-budget superhero movies such as the current Justice League.
If youre at DC, youre at the pinnacle of comics, Asselin said. You feel like youve made it into this amazing club where only an elite few get to work. It was a dream come true.
Asselin rose to be the associate editor of one of DCs most treasured properties the Batman comics. From her perch, she shepherded one of DCs first bisexual characters, Starling, into existence and put the brakes on sexist plot devices.
There was a storyline in a Robin comic where the writer wanted the female villain to be tricked by chocolate. Because shes a woman, Asselin recalled with a laugh. It was her first time objecting to a major storyline, and she won.
At DC, Janelle Asselin rose to become the associate editor of the Batman comics, but later quit after reporting a male editors sexual comments. Photograph: Janelle Asselin
But her time with DC would be short-lived. After she and a number of women reported Eddie Berganza, one of the companys most esteemed editors, to HR for making sexual comments in 2010, Berganza received a promotion.
Asselin quit.
Berganza, who has fired earlier this month following a BuzzFeed report about the allegations against him, has not publicly responded to the accusations and did not return a request for comment from the Guardian, nor did DC.
Earlier this month, Asselin tweeted: I loved my job at DC until that year that things went south. I never wouldve left if it hadnt been for DCs lack of respect for the women who came forward. My career and life could be very different if Eddie Berganza hadnt been what he was.
I underestimated what the psychological impact of reporting him and watching DC promote him anyway would be, Asselin told the Guardian. By the end, I hated going to work, because I had a very negative view about the company and their priorities.
Asselin took a new position with Disney but was later laid off. Working as a comics journalist and starting an independent publishing company gave her some satisfaction, but ultimately, she burned out. Today, Asselin is a claims adjustor for a workers compensation insurer.
My career was forever impacted by this, she said. Its hard to know what would have happened if they had done something But I feel like a lot of the women who left would have still been there.
The TV writer
Kater Gordons career reached a peak many writers only dream of in fall 2009, when she shared an Emmy as a writer on the second season of Mad Men.
She hasnt worked in television since.
The reason, she recently told the Information, is that the shows creator, Matthew Weiner, sexually harassed her. The incident robbed her of all her confidence and placed her in a lose-lose situation: She felt it could end her career if she challenged him, but she didnt feel like she could continue to work with him if she didnt.
Weiner denies he harassed her. After leaving the Mad Men writers room, Gordons attempts to stay in television were dogged by tabloid rumors that she and Weiner were in a relationship.
I had the Emmy, but instead of being able to use that as a launch pad for the rest of my career, it became an anchor because I felt I had to answer to speculative stories in the press, she said. I eventually walked away instead of fighting back.

In an interview with the Guardian, Gordon who is setting up a nonprofit to help victims of sexual harassment said, We are all paying a cost for harassment.
By removing talented, capable, willing people from the workforce, we are hindering our ability to capitalize on the full potential of our entire society. When large portions of the population feel unsafe or completely remove themselves or theyre involuntarily removed from the workforce, were limiting our potential. On a large scale.
The costume designer
In 2010, Emma Bowers was one of the thousands of Hollywood strivers who perform creative work, for little to no pay, with the hope of gaining a toehold in the industry.
It made her highly exploitable, she said. Bowers trade was costume design. When she took on unpaid work for Andy Signore, the creator of YouTube series Honest Trailers, she claims, he sexually harassed her and responded viciously when she talked about his conduct to co-workers. Signore has not made a public statement about the allegations, anddid not respond to request from the Guardian for comment.
It killed my desire to work in the industry, Bowers told the Guardian. I had kind of this meltdown. I said, Im done with this industry, I dont want to be in this world any more. And after that, I wasnt.
Today, she works in animal rescue, sometimes running educational workshops for kids. The animals and the children are nicer to me than anybody in the film industry ever was, she laughed.
The reporter
Michael Oreskes spent decades at the top of his field, first as the Washington bureau chief for the New York Times, then as the editorial director of NPR.
At least one reporter who accused him of sexual harassment said Oreskes stripped her of the confidence to reach the same heights.
When I first went to see him, it was after screwing up my nerve to try to be bold and maneuver myself into a better job, and after what happened with him, I never really tried that again, she told the Washington Post.
Oreskes has not publicly commented on the claims of harassment, but in an internal memo obtained by CNN, he wrote, I am deeply sorry to the people I hurt. My behavior was wrong and inexcusable, and I accept full responsibility.
The reporter, who asked to remain anonymous so as not to damage her employment prospects, added: The worst part of my whole encounter with Oreskes wasnt the weird offers of room service lunch or the tongue kiss but the fact that he utterly destroyed my ambition.
The actors
Sophie Dix felt like she was on the verge of success. Then she met Harvey Weinstein.
Now a screenplay writer, Dix in the 1990s was an actor with a growing repertoire, scoring roles opposite Donald Pleasence and Colin Firth. Weinstein, she claims, interrupted her rise after he sexually assaulted her in a hotel room one night and she refused to keep his attack to herself.
I was met with a wall of silence, she told the Guardian. People who were involved in the film were great, my friends and my family were amazing and very compassionate, but people in the industry didnt want to know about it, they didnt want to hear.
Dix doesnt know exactly what happened behind the scenes, but she never landed another movie role again.
Part of her was all right with that. I decided if this what being an actress is like, I dont want it, she said. She threw herself into her screenwriting career. But the assault, she said, was the single most damaging thing thats happened in my life and derailed her acting ambitions.
Weinstein has repeatedly denied accusations of non-consensual contact, although he has appeared to acknowledge having sexually harassed some workers.
Sophie Dix: I was met with a wall of silence. Photograph: Graeme Robertson for the Guardian
I had done some TV and stuff before, that but this was my big movie break, Dix recalled. I still had a decent acting career, but it was all in TV. I never really had a film career. I think my film career was massively cut short.
Ive had friends call after the New York Times pieces came out, some who are now really famous, who knew about it at the time, and they say: This was the moment it changed for you.
Others believe Weinstein himself played an active role in icing them out of the industry.
Annabella Sciorra, who has accused Weinstein of violently raping her, believes he wielded his power to cloud her reputation.
From 1992, I didnt work again until 1995, she told the New Yorker. I just kept getting this pushback of We heard you were difficult; we heard this or that. I think that that was the Harvey machine.
Her friend, the actor Rosie Perez, recalled urging her to go to the police. She said, I cant go to the police. Hes destroying my career.

The Hollywood producer was a storied bully and media manipulator.
Darryl Hannah claims there were instant repercussions for resisting his advances. The Miramax plane left without her at an international premiere of Kill Bill 2, and her flights, stylists and accommodations were cancelled for another.
I thought that was the repercussion, you know, the backlash, Hannah said.
This fear of losing your career is not losing your ticket to a borrowed dress and earrings someone paid you to wear, said the actor Ellen Barkin. Its losing your ability to support yourself, to support your family, and this is fucking real whether you are the biggest movie star or the lowest-pay-grade assistant.
Emmy and Golden Globe-winner Jane Seymour was a young actor when she rejected the propositions of the most powerful man in Hollywood at that time.
Seymour said the man, who she did not name, threatened to blacklist her if she ever repeated the details of their encounter.
Youll never work ever again anywhere on the planet, Seymour said he told her. She called the incident devastating and said it caused her to drop out of acting for at least a year, and almost permanently.
The production company assistant
Weinstein Company assistants also say they came in for abuse that forced them to leave the industry.
Emily Nestor was a law school graduate and business school student when she considered turning a temporary position at the Weinstein Company into a career in movies.
Then Weinstein began to relentlessly proposition her, she says.
I was definitely traumatized for a while, in terms of feeling so harassed and frightened, Nestor said. It made me feel incredibly discouraged that this could be something that happens on a regular basis. I actually decided not to go into entertainment because of this incident.

The comedians
Louis CK was one of the most revered names in comedy, and so was his agent.
That proved to be a career obstacle for comedians Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov, who claim that the comedian exposed himself to them and then grew angry when they told friends in the comedy world about his behavior.
Whenever they saw Louis CKs agent, Dave Becky, attached to a project and there were many times they didnt even bother to put themselves in the running.
We know immediately that we can never even submit our material, Wolov told the Times.
Louis CK has said the sexual allegations against him are true. Know I never threatened anyone, Becky has said.
Abby Schachner said she was deeply discouraged when she called Louis CK to invite him to a show and he masturbated while on the phone. She said the incident was one of the factors that pushed her out of comedy. Today, she illustrates childrens books.
I cant even make a phone call, how am I going to pursue this as a career? Schachner thought to herself at the time, she told the Guardian. It knocks your confidence away If you honestly feel no confidence, its better to hide.

A Definitive Ranking Of 2000s Rom Coms
Although people who peaked in high school like to act poetic about how great the 2000s were, they werent actually any better than the present day. I mean, it was a time when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake wore matching denim outfits in public and nobody carted them off to an insane asylum.
But Im prepared to make a concession on two points: 1) At least we werent under the administration of a sentient slime mold wearing a bad wig. 2) The 2000s were a golden age for romantic comedies, mostly thanks to Judy Greers tireless efforts to play every heroines best friend. Plus, only like half the jokes were sexist, and there was about an 80% chance pre-pretentious Matthew McConaughey would show up.
Obviously, a betch has to be picky about her rom-comssome are shitty in a good way, but others are best avoided in case someone catches you watching them. To guide your Netflix viewings, here’s a totally objective list of 00s rom coms. If you disagree, which Im sure everyone will, please note that Im not actually forcing you to watch these movies; Im just saying that if you regularly watch any of the bottom five, you have terrible taste.
14.
is considered a modern classic by two groups of people. 1) men in their late 20s with a crush on Natalie Portman and a thriving quarter-life crisis and 2) 8th graders in 2004 under the assumption that any movie that features a Shins track in its soundtrack is automatically deep. To everyone else, its a film about self-absorbed white people whining about their lives until theyre magically fixed by the power of mixtapes. There are approximately a zillion issues with this film, beginning with Zach Braffs complete lack of expression and ending with the fact that you cant cure real depression by listening to The Shins, no matter how clearly superior the soundtrack is to anything else in this film. Worst of all, though, is the fact that Natalie Portman played a manic pixie dream girl so obnoxious I still dream about strangling her character sometimes. Padme deserves so much better.
13.
Im not saying romantic comedies have to make much sense, but s plot is mystifying. Matthew McConaugheys parents are tired of him living at home, so they call in a lady high class escort (Sarah Jessica Parker) whose job is literally seducing men into moving out of their parents basements and unceremoniously dumping them. Because that’s plausible, and not at all fucked up to force your son to fall in love with someone you’re paying. Ridiculous premise aside, you know a movie is terrible when famed nicegirl Zooey Deschanel is the best thing about it.
12. Monster-in-Law
In case you missed this one, and for your sake I hope you did, is about Jane Fonda inexplicably being terrible to Jennifer Lopez, who walks a lot of dogs and is engaged to Fondas son. That right there should tell you all you need to knowI cannot think of one movie that JLo was in that was anything above mild torture, and we’re supposed to root for her character why, exactly? If my son was engaged to a full-time dog walker you can best believe I’d do everything short of actual murder to put a stop to that bullshit.
11.
Im told some people love this movie, but Jesus fucking Christ, is it possible for the two main characters to be any more appalling? Here you have two assholes manipulating the shit out of each other and just generally acting psychotic, all to win a stupid bet with their friends. They really should call it “How To Act Like A Psychopath And Lose Your Dignity.”

Not gonna lie, I fucking adored when I was an impressionable preteen. It had time travel! Mark Ruffalo! A makeover scene! Years later, the movie is still fun to watch, even if it is way too obsessed with the 80s, but the jokes are more cute than funny. Also, why would anyone allow their 13-year-old child to go to a sleepover hosted by a 30-year-old? That is … questionable to say the least. Not to mention Jennifer Garner’s character does a reverse transformation from a betch into a nicegirl and dumps her hot pro bf in favor of her formerly fat friend. Blah blah, true love, I don’t give a fuck. Tenth.
9.
is close to being wrapped in cutesy narration, but it’s far superior. For one thing, it reintroduced the world to Joseph Gordon-Levitts dimples. For another, it manages to be a fairly realistic depiction of a shitty millennial relationship without being super fucking depressing. But thats also kind of the problemrom coms arent supposed to be realistic, theyre supposed to be clich and feel-good, and I don’t care what you say, Summer is a thot. I have literally stayed up at night mapping how she could have possibly met someone worthy of engagement a mere 118 days after she broke up with Tom, and only six days after attending a wedding as his guest (yes I did the mathI told you; this movie keeps me up at night). No matter how you slice it, she had to have cheated on somebody.
8.
Full disclosure: As a Southern betch, Im stoked that takes place right next door. (Dear Hollywood: An entire country exists between New York and LA.) But even though it features Patrick Dempsey as the other man, Josh Lucas with a dreamy Southern accent, and Reese Witherspoon, there are still some issues. Mainly, WTF WERE YOU THINKING, MELANIE? Did you really dump your future president fianc for your secret redneck husband just so “the first boy you kissed could also be your last”? I’ve heard of trying to keep your number down, but damn if this isn’t some delusional shit.
7.
Everyone on planet Earth can relate to having a batshit crazy family, and thats exactly what makes appealing. The two leads are fine, considering they’re not Kate Hudson or Matthew McConaughey, but the extended family is everyones favorite part of the movie. Honestly the most memorable moment to come out of this movie is the “put some Windex on it”pretty good deal for Windex, not so much for the people who actually starred in the movie. However, it does get points for the memorable line: “The man may be the head of the household, but the woman is the neck and she can turn the head any way she pleases.”
6.
The plot is pretty flimsy (a Canadian businesswoman has to marry her assistant to avoid deportation) but everyone loves a story where the couple starts out hating each other and eventually falls in love. The cast is what makes this movie pure rom com gold: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, and Betty fucking White, who gifted us with the infamous Native American dance scene. Basically, it’s predictable but ridiculous, making it better than some of the other garbage movies on this list.
5.
Admittedly, is probably to blame for some of the chubby man-child/beautiful, svelte woman couplings we see in the media that give men unrealistic beauty expectations (of the types of women they can expect to date), otherwise known as The Beyonc/Jay Z Phenomenon. But whatevs. Its a good movie. Seth Rogen has that whole dad bod thing going onapparently a thing some people are intoand Katherine Heigl was at the top of her rom com game before she pissed off the entire cast of .is actually hilarious, which is enough to make up for the fact that Katherine Heigl appears in it.
4.
Even aside from my undeniable crush on youthful Sandra Bullock, is a quintessential early-2000s romantic comedy. Allow me to explain. 1) It stars an ambitious career woman who dont need no man. 2) But she kind of wants one anyway, and everyone realizes what a catch she is when she puts on lipstick and a dress. 3) Did I mention its plot is literally an extended makeover scene as Bullock goes from bad ass FBI agent to bad ass beauty pageant contestant? I rest my case. Add in some cute female friendships and a scene in which Bullock teaches us how to fend off an attacker, and its basically required viewing every year.
3.
You had to know was going to make the list despite this amazing take-down article of why it’s actually terrible. With approximately a bajillion storylines going on, its hard not to find one you like and get invested, and it doesnt hurt that the film features every well-known British actor under the sun. Im not sure how the movie manages to juggle all the different plots without being confusing and/or boring, but Im not gonna question it. However, this shit is TOO FUCKING LONG. If I have to pop an Adderall just to make it through a damn movie (which I do), you need to send your editors back to the drawing board.
2.
is the perfect example of a rom com thats super clich in theory, but in practice, its so fucking heartwarming it doesnt even matter (ugh). Katherine Heigl plays ultimate nicegirl Jane (in case the fact that her name is “Jane” wasn’t enough of a clue), whos been part of 27 weddings and miraculously hasnt gone broke from buying all the bridesmaid dresses. The dudes are pretty forgettable, but Janes psychotic sister and slutty best friend totally steal the spotlight, elevating the film to truly betchy heights.
P.S. For once, James Marsden plays the leading man, so his preternaturally perfect face gets more screen time, #bless.
1.
Bridget Joness Diary is the ultimate feel-good movie, as in its literally impossible to watch it without feeling your icy soul thaw ever so slightly at the end. The titular character starts out fat, single, and past the age of 30, so basically our worst nightmare. By the end, though, she manages to bang Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, land a better job, and become a self-described wanton sex goddess. If those arent your life goals, you clearly need to start your own self-help journey.
