"He Spoke To My Mother, Weeping": Rahul Gandhi On "Senior Leader" Who Quit
Congress's Rahul Gandhi concluded the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra in Mumbai today with some barbs at foes and former friends. While the heavy artillery was reserved for the BJP, a senior leader, thought to be Ashok Chavan, who recently crossed over to the BJP, got some special attention.
Tumblr media
Without naming the former Maharashtra Chief Minister and MP, Mr Gandhi hinted that he had crossed over to evade the Central investigation agencies.
"We are fighting with a power. Now the question is, what is that power. The soul of a king lies in the EVMs, ED (Enforcement Directorate), CBI, Income tax," Mr Gandhi said, addressing a mammoth crowd in Mumbai.
"I don't want to name names, but a senior leader from this state, left the Congress. Weeping, he told my mother, 'Sonia-ji, I'm ashamed to say, I do not have the power to fight this people, this force. I do not want to go to jail'," he added.
The Congress has levelled the "washing machine" allegation against the BJP again after Mr Chavan switched sides last month, shortly after another key leader, Milind Deora.
State Congress chief Nana Patole, with whom he had serious differences, said the reason was mention of the Adarsh scam in a White Paper presented in parliament.
Mr Chavan has three cases pending against him, two of which are linked to the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society.
Mr Chavan was the revenue minister of the state in 2000, when land in Colaba was allegedly allotted illegally for the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society.
The veteran leader has ascribed various differences with the Congres as his reason for leaving the party.

Congress Faces Another Blow: BJP Labels AAP's Delhi Seat Offer as Yet Another 'No-Confidence Motion
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has characterized the recent offer from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Congress for a single Lok Sabha seat in Delhi as another blow to the already beleaguered party. BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla declared that this move signifies another “no-confidence motion” against the Congress by its own allies.
Tumblr media
Poonawalla highlighted recent incidents where other political entities had seemingly snubbed the Congress. He mentioned Mamata Banerjee’s offer of just two seats, Akhilesh Yadav’s allocation of seats in Uttar Pradesh, and Sanjay Raut’s assertion that the Congress should start from zero in Maharashtra. Poonawalla argued that these instances demonstrate a lack of confidence in the Congress among its alliance partners, transforming the coalition into an effort to diminish the party’s influence rather than challenging the ruling BJP.
Asserting that the alliance partners’ lack of confidence stems from the diminishing appeal of the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, Poonawalla declared, “It is not an alliance of ‘Modi Hatao’ but an alliance of ‘Congress ko ghatao’ (diminish Congress).” He suggested that the Congress should be given around 200 seats or less nationwide, attributing the emergence of regional parties to a gradual erosion of the Congress’ voter base.
Poonawalla cited the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) rise to power in Delhi as an example of how regional parties have eclipsed the Congress. He argued that the AAP gained prominence by superseding the Congress in both Delhi and Punjab, emphasizing their reluctance to revive a diminishing political force.
Taking a swipe at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Poonawalla remarked on the perceived decline in support for the party since the initiation of Rahul Gandhi’s “Nyay Yatra.” He listed instances where leaders like Mayawati, Mamata Banerjee, Milind Deora, and Ashok Chavan expressed dissatisfaction or distanced themselves from the Congress. Poonawalla predicted a widespread rejection of such alliances by the public.
Earlier, AAP MP Sandeep Pathak had offered the Congress one seat in Delhi, acknowledging the Congress party’s limited electoral success in the region. While the AAP plans to contest the remaining six seats, the gesture was made in the spirit of alliance and respect for the Congress party.

Day After Quitting Congress, Ashok Chavan To Join BJP Today
A day after he quit the Congress, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is set to join the BJP later today. "Today around 12-12:30, I am going to start a new journey of my political career, I am going to join BJP," Mr Chavan told news agency ANI.
Tumblr media
He had yesterday told the media that he will take a decision on his next step in a couple of days. Deputy Chief Minister and the state's top BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, it is learnt, will welcome Mr Chavan into the party. Mr Chavan's aide Amar Rajurkar, who resigned as MLC with him, will also join the BJP today.
Sources have said the former Chief Minister may be offered a Rajya Sabha seat. That would also explain his decision to join the BJP a day after he resigned from the Congress and the Assembly: time for filing nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls is running out.
"I have resigned from the Assembly membership as an MLA. I have given my resignation to the Speaker. I have resigned from the Congress Working Committee and the Congress primary membership. I have not decided to join any party. I will clear my stand on joining a party after two days," Mr Chavan had told reporters yesterday.
Mr Chavan's exit is yet another blow to Maharashtra Congress months ahead of state polls and the general election. Earlier, key Congress leader, Milind Deora, quit the party and joined the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena. Baba Siddique too left and moved to the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
According to Congress sources, Mr Chavan's differences with state party chief Nana Patole played a key role in his decision. Speaking to the media yesterday, he had suggested that he was upset over the delay in finalising seat-sharing within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with just months left for the polls.
Mumbai Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said that the former Chief Minister was upset over the working style of a Congress leader in Maharashtra. He did not name any leader. "He (Chavan) had approached the top leadership. Had his complaint been taken seriously, this situation would not have happened," Mr Nirupam said.
Congress leaders have taken swipes at Mr Chavan following his decision. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh took a "washing machine" jab -- washing machine is an oft-repeated reference the Congress uses to accuse the BJP of stalling criminal investigations against Opposition leaders who switch to their side.
"When friends and colleagues leave a political party that has given them much -- perhaps much more they deserved -- it is always a matter of anguish. But to those who are vulnerable THAT Washing Machine will always prove more attractive than ideological commitment or personal loyalties," Mr Ramesh said. "These betrayers don't realise that their exit opens up vast new opportunities to those whose growth they have always stunted," he added.
Maharashtra Congress chief Patole said it is "unfortunate that leaders who have got everything are leaving the Congress party and ideology".
The son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan, Ashok Chavan wields significant influence in Nanded region. His exit comes at a time when the Maha Vikas Aghadi -- comprising the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar camp of NCP and the Congress -- faces two tall poll challenges.
Ashok Chavan has had an eventful political journey so far. Starting out as a student leader during his college days, he went on to hold key posts in the Congress, including Maharashtra Congress chief and a member of the Congress Working Committee. He has served as an MP from Nanded on two occasions and been a member of both Houses of the state legislature.
After serving as state minister, he was chosen for the Chief Minister post after Vilasrao Deshmukh stepped down in the aftermath of the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. The Congress retained him on the top post after the 2009 state polls. The stint was, however, short as Mr Chavan was forced to step down amid corruption allegations related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam.

Ashok Chavan Latest To Quit Congress After Milind Deora, Baba Siddique
In a big blow to the Congress in Maharashtra months ahead of the general election and state polls, former chief minister and former MP Ashok Chavan resigned from the party's primary membership amid reports that he was in talks with the BJP. The senior leader may get a ticket to the Rajya Sabha, according to sources.
Tumblr media
Mr Chavan, who represents Bhokar in the Assembly, met Speaker Rahul Narvekar and handed in his resignation. If he joins the BJP, it will be the second big switchover in Maharashtra after Congress leader Milind Deora quit the party last month and joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Earlier, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had been asked if Mr Chavan is joining the party. "I heard about Ashok Chavan from media. But only thing I can say now is that several good leaders from Congress are in touch of BJP. Those leaders who are connected with the masses are feeling suffocated in Congress. I am confident that some big faces will join Congress," he had then said.
According to Congress sources, Mr Chavan's differences with state party chief Nana Patole on selection of candidates may have played a major role in his decision to switch sides.
Son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan, Ashok Chavan wields significant influence in the Nanded region and this switch may hurt the Congress in the upcoming polls. This also plays out against the backdrop of the tall poll challenge facing the Maha Vikas Aghadi -- comprising the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar camp of NCP and the Congress.

8 States Account For Over 84% Covid-19 Cases in India; Maharashtra, Punjab, MP Among Them
Congress leader Milind Deora has demanded ‘decentralisation’ of Mumbai’s vaccine rollout, and has said that a lockdown in Maharashtra is not the answer. This comes days after chief minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked the administration to prepare for a ‘shutdown-like’ measure. Shiv Sena’s ally NCP too had rejected the idea of such curbs. “Mumbai accounts for 10% of India’s daily #COVID19 cases &…

In a rare move, 23 senior leaders of the Congress party have flagged the leadership issue in a letter to Sonia Gandhi, according to a report in The Indian Express.
The leaders have called for major organisational reforms. According to the Indian Express report, the leaders have acknowledged that the party is losing its support base and also the confidence of the youth, who are voting for Narendra Modi. The letter was sent a fortnight ago, says the report.
The letter accessed by the newspaper acknowledges the return of Narendra Modi's government with clear mandate and calls for a “full time and effective leadership” which is both “visible” and “active” in the field. The leaders have also requested for transparent elections to the CWC, seen over the years as a formality for a party that has been led by Nehru-Gandhi family.

In the letter, the signatories have flagged issues related to uncertainty in leadership and "drift" which have demoralised the party's workers. It also underlines the episodic interventions by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and have sought an institutional mechanism to guide the party. The signatories cut across various age groups and regions of the country and include leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad; party MPs and former union ministers Anand Sharma, Kapil Sibal, Manish Tewari, Shashi Tharoor; MP Vivek Tankha; AICC office bearers and CWC members including Mukul Wasnik and Jitin Prasada and former Chief Ministers and Union Ministers including Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Rajender Kaur Bhattal, M Veerappa Moily, Prithviraj Chavan, P J Kurian, Ajay Singh, Renuka Chaudhary, and Milind Deora; former PCC chiefs Raj Babbar (UP), Arvinder Singh Lovely (Delhi) and Kaul Singh Thakur (Himachal); current Bihar campaign chief Akhilesh Prasad Singh, former Haryana Speaker Kuldeep Sharma; former Delhi Speaker Yoganand Shastri and former MP Sandeep Dixit, the paper reported.

The leaders have pointed out in the letter for a decentralisation of power, empowerment of state units, elections to the Congress organisation at all levels at a time when the country is going through a pandemic, facing a stand-off with China, unemployment, economic recession and challenges of BJP and Sangh Parivar's 'decisive and communal agenda.' The letter calls for an introspection for the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, decisive action to gain trust for party's revival and talks of reuniting the Opposition and rallying parties headed by the leaders who have left Congress in the past.
The letter also acknowledges the leadership provided by Sonia Gandhi which it mentions will always be a part of the 'collective leadership', according to the report.

The anarchy in the Congress - editorials
Tumblr media
In the wake of the Congress’ second consecutive rout in the Delhi assembly election — it failed to win a single seat, slumped to its lowest vote share to just a little over 4%, and did not get the highest number of votes in even 1% of the booths — there is a war of words that has broken out within the party. From former finance minister P Chidambaram celebrating the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to Sharmistha Mukherjee (Delhi Congress leader and daughter of former president Pranab Mukherjee) asking him whether the Congress had outsourced the task of defeating the BJP to regional parties; from (former Delhi in-charge) P C Chacko implicitly blaming the loss on the late Sheila Dikshit to her aide and spokesperson Pawan Khera pointing out how the party had never fared as poorly under her; from former Mumbai unit chief Milind Deora praising the Aam Aadmi Party’s governance to former Delhi unit chief Ajay Maken suggesting that Mr Deora should leave the party, the battle is both public and bitter. This is extending to factionalism within other state units, with young leaders, in particular, expressing unhappiness. There is also a lack of coherence on policy issues with, for instance, Shashi Tharoor criticising the government for denying entry to a British Member of Parliament, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi supporting it. The party’s advocates may suggest this is a sign of internal democracy. But political parties work on the basis of a degree of coherence and discipline. Dissent is expressed within party forums. If there are grievances, the onus then rests on the leadership. What is happening in the Congress appears like anarchy. There are two causes of this crisis. The first is the absence of an honest, introspective, internal review after its loss in the Lok Sabha elections. In its absence, the party is struggling to mount a united challenge, on a common ideological platform, against the BJP. The second is the weakness and the churn in the top leadership. Sonia Gandhi remains deeply respected, but has been unwilling or unable to assert her authority. The fact that she has made it clear that her presidency is only an interim arrangement leads to uncertainty. Rahul Gandhi’s decision to quit as president, his frequent absences, and his sporadic intervention in party affairs is not helping either — for there is a lack of clarity on whether he is going to return as president or has decided to narrow his role to merely that of an MP. All of this has caused anxieties among the party’s rank and file, which does not see a road map for the future. The party owes it to the over 110 million voters who reposed faith in it last year, as well as to Indian democracy, to get its act together. Read the full article

BJP-Shiv Sena script spectacular saffron success
Tumblr media
Mumbai: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena combine marched to a spectacular victory in Maharashtra, leading in or bagging (as of 6 pm) 41 of the state’s 48 Lok Sabha constituencies here on Monday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the success by saying: “Its not just a ‘Modi-wave’, it’s a tsunami.” “There are no differences between us (BJP-Sena).. The people have given us a clear verdict. We shall go among the people and work for development and other issues,” Fadnavis said. Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray, who warmly welcomed Fadnavis at his home in the evening, attributed the results to the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his policies. “Our alliance will continue further, even after the upcoming assembly elections in October…” Thackeray assured. To question on his estranged cousin Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray’s famous campaign (“Laav re te video” Play that video), Thackeray declined comment, but said mockingly: “Laav re te fataakde” – ‘burst the crackers’. As per latest trends, the BJP was on way to winning 22 seats and the Shiv Sena 20 seats, of the 25 and 23 seats respectively, they contested, which Fadnavis termed as well within their expectations and which “increased the responsibility thrust by the people on the saffron alliance”. The electoral bloodbath in Maharashtra claimed at least two union ministers – one from the BJP (DESK: Final announcement awaited) and one from Sena – falling to the Congress and NCP respectively candidates respectively. There are two former chief ministers – Ashok Chavan in Nanded and Sushilkumar Shinde in Solapur – both from Congress who were felled by the BJP surge. However, the Congress is still pinning hopes of winning one seat – Chandrapur, while its ally Nationalist Congress Party has bagged four seats so far – Baramati, Raigad, Shirur and Satara, one opposition-supported independent, south Indian film actress Navnit Kaur R. Rana – Amravati. In Aurangabad, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen candidate Imtiyaz Jaleel Syed who was leading with significant margins since morning, suddenly trailed in the evening behind his Shiv Sena rival Chandrakant Ahire, and the ding-dong battle between them continued in each round. NCP President Sharad Pawar said he humbly accepted the peoples’ verdict, while a bewildered MNS chief Raj Thackeray termed the outcome “as beyond rationale”. For the state’s numero uno political clan, the shocking defeat of Parth Ajit Pawar in Maval was first ever tasted by any family member in any elections in the past over five decades. Another former chief minister and President of Maharashtra Swabhimani Party Narayan Rane’s son and former MP Nilesh Rane was trounced by the Sena candidate Vinayak Raut in Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, with the Congress controversial nominee Navinchandra B. Bandivadekar faring a poor third. The country’s commercial capital saw the Congress-NCP dreams crumble once again after 2014 when they lost all the six seats in Mumbai, stunning the recently-appointed city party chief Milind M. Deora. Similary, the much-anticipated Dalit-Muslim unity experiment of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) was totally rejected by the people, with VBA President Prakash Ambedkar – grandson of Architect of Indian Constitution B. R. Ambedkar – losing in both Akola and Solapur seats which he contested, though the AIMIM candidate in Aurangabad held out hopes of a victory. Bouyed by the outcome, a confident BJP Minister Chandrakant Patil even announced that the state assembly elections would be held in mid-October and that month, the BJP-Sena alliance would again rule Maharashtra.
