The Puck drops tonight for the @NHL season opener 2018/2019. On March 11, 1965 NHL President Clarence Campbell announced the NHL will expand from 6 to 12 teams that will begin play in 1967, Oakland, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Minnesota were awarded expansion teams. May 25, 1966 they announced the team will be called the Minnesota North Stars, they played their first game on October 11, 1967 and skate to a 2-2 tie against the St. Louis Blues, Tragedy struck on January 13, 1968 when former US National Team Player Bill Masterson suffered a fatal hit during a game against the Oakland Seals, 2 days later on January 15, 1967 Masterson died at the age of 29 from what the doctors described as massive brain injury, to this date the only player to die from injuries sustained during an NHL game, the North Stars retired his number 19. In 1978 the North Stars and Cleveland Barons were both financially strapped and are in trouble of folding, Gordon and George Gund III owners of the Barons had a solution to merge both teams and the team will retain the name, colors and will remain in Minnesota and keep the history but the wealthier Gund's became majority owners, the team move from Smythe Division to Adams Division. In 1992 owner Norm Green were negotiating a move to Anaheim and will change the team to L.A. Stars but the Walt Disney Corporation are already in talks about an expansion team so the NHL convinced green to move the team to Dallas instead and let Disney have the expansion team in Anaheim that will become the Mighty Ducks, 25 years ago the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas to become the Dallas Stars, In 1996 Green's financial difficulties forced him to sell the team to Tom Hicks and in 1999 The Dallas Stars led by North Stars holdover Mike Modano(81 pts) and Richard Matvichuk with goaltender Ed Balfour (35 wins), Joe Nieuwendyk, Brett Hull, Jamie Langenbrunner, Grant Marshall, Sergei Zubov and Captain Derian Hatcher won the Stanley Cup, Hatcher became the 1st American Born Captain to win the #StanleyCup Dallas Stars ✖ New Era 59Fifty Fitted Cap. #Dallas #DallasStars #NHL #DropthePuck #Minnesota #MinnesotaStars #ClevelandBarons #NewEra https://www.instagram.com/p/BodRSYAAuuB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1dx9519wmjszc

Flashback: When the Stars Come to Town
I did not have this account back in 2012, but I fished this OLD spoof song out of my email vault. --- * From 2010-2012, Minnesota Stars were in 2nd tier NASL and league-owned. * In the 2012 USOC 2nd rd, MN Stars beat Des Moines Menace away. * MN won coin toss to host 3rd game vs Real Salt Lake. * Strapped for cash w/o an owner, MN sold home rights despite pleas from Dark Clouds. * MN Stars front office did ensure that RSL would provide a live stream for MN fans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PQEiQV9-dA ---
"When Stars Come to Town" based on "When Love Comes to Town" by U2 and B. B. King http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38_dBew9YT0
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I love my soccer but was lost in plea I was looking forward to a third round at Nessie I was a Dark Cloud but couldn't do more than spit Now Garth stands accused of the things he said
When Stars come to town Dark Clouds still rave When Stars come to town Matt's gonna make that save Maybe 'gainst Dallas, their starters should've sat down But Salt Lake did what they did before the Stars came to town
I drank a Surly under a red sunset Garth was making promises he was soon to forget J. Kreis was pale, his face had an '05 frown As Viva left Steele standing when the Stars came to town
Ran into a handball -- Olave heard Salt Lake scream, The Stars were turning Blue when Hlavaty struck a dream As Kallman's ball crossed, I saw Number 10 go around That was the day when the Stars came to town.
When Stars come to town Dark Clouds gonna rave When Stars come to town Matt's gonna make that save Maybe that Check(etts) should not have paid down But he did what he did before the Stars came to town
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...
[Notes] * Garth = Garth Lagerwey GM of Real Salt Lake on buying out home field advantage: "I think that shows our commitment to winning. We literally did whatever it took to give our team the best chance to win just a first round game." -- aside: actually 3rd round, but 1st USOC rd for MLS teams
* Matt = MN GK Matt Van Oekel (now backup GK for Real Salt Lake) * Viva = MN MF Kevin Venegas (now FB for MN United) * Steele = RSL MF Jonny Steele (also played against MN w/Carolina Railhawks, Puerto Rico Islanders, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Railhawks again, brief stint with MNUFC in 2015) * Olave = RSL DF Jamison Olave, called for an obvious handball in the box * Blue = the color of MN Stars kits (and MN Thunder) * Hlavaty = MN MF Neil Hlavaty, hit the PK after the handball in the box * Kallman = MN RB Brian Kallman (the elder) * Number 10 = MN FW Simone Bracalello
* J. Kreis = Jason Kreis, coach of Real Salt Lake, scored 3 goals for RSL in their 6-4 extra time loss to the '05 MN Thunder "I've said this once before in my coaching career and I'll say it again now," said Kreis. "I would not want to be a player under me right now."
* Check(etts) = David Checketts, chairman of SCP Worldwide, owner of Real Salt Lake
