Those silent moments!
Today, post lunch, I had to go to Adyar to meet somebody. I left office and headed thru Kotturpuram.
As I was just about to cross the Kotturpuram bridge, I realised my car tyre was flat. So, I turned left immediately after the bridge and pulled. Then called a 'puncture specialist'. He said he was busy attending another car somewhere at R A Puram and will take an hour to come. I had enough time for a smoke and tea. So locked my car and started walking. The lane was very familiar to me. Not much of activity on that sleepy lane. Calm. But, this time it was unusually calm.
My mind trickled down to the yellowed pages of my memory.
Till about 5 - 6 years ago, almost everyday, around 6.....6.30 pm, i will get a message from her...
"?"
"Another 30..40 mnts.."
"Sure. So 8?"
"Yup"
This would typically be our exchange of SMS in the evenings.
I will go and pick her up from the adjacent lane to the The Times of India office at Nandanam. We would usually head south to Adyar River at Kotturpuram. Park the car at the same place I did today. With our mobile phones switched off and left behind in the car-unforgettably, we would start walking. It would be fairly a long walk, at least for an hour.
We would take the straight lane towards the east, alongside the river- the same lane I did today.
It's a quiet road with trees lined up on both sides. Invariably, every day, the roadside iron shop (pushcart) fellow at the corner would be busy winding up for the day as we walk past that corner. A small tea shop, just a few yards away from the iron cart, would also wind up around that time. If these fellows were not there we would know we were late that day.
During such walks, we generally exchange our day's experience, who met whom, what stories we filed for the day. More often than not, she would crib about her bureau chief. I, obviously, had to pacify and tell her she must handle him ably.
And then our conversation might branch out to various topics - ranging from books, poetry to glass making to economics, and at times relationships too. I often admired at her linguistic skills when we discussed poetry and some plays of Girish Karnad (she loved his works, and can talk for hours on them), as much as at her courage to admit her ignorance in some areas.
I usually do not read plays. When she tells me those stories (without cutting them short) and some specific character's intellect, it might be very boring. But I would pretend to be a keen audience. Some times, she would ask me  questions like why were we not using hydrogen as fuel for automobiles, what's the fuel for rockets that launch space shuttles - all these questions must have surfaced in her mind during her interactions with somebody that day or some discussions she overheard in the office.
All these conversations would happen only if we did not fight during the day for some reasons or the other. Otherwise, we wouldn't talk during such walks.  Not a word would be spoken. Even if one initiates to say something, the other would shush. We just stroll, with our hands clasped.  All along, there would be a deep silence until we come back to the car. I would drop her at the IIT junction for her to catch a bus or auto, and then i would drive back home.
Strangely, for reasons not known, those silent strolls proved to be a greater experience, and the best way to unwind our usually hectic days-pleasantly. Those moments spoke volumes. They cured several wounds - irrespective of who inflicted whom.
Today too, though I carried the phone with me,  I was not talking to any one. Nor did I check my whatsapp. The lane was quiet. But, it was very strange. I really did not enjoy my walk today. Neither the calmness of the lane, nor did the silence give me any pleasure.
Times change!

Japanese drink shōchū comes to Chennai’s TASMAC outlets
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/japanese-drink-shochu-comes-to-chennais-tasmac-outlets/
Japanese drink shōchū comes to Chennai’s TASMAC outlets
Tumblr media
Consuming the most whiskey in all of the world conversely affects Indians’ accrued knowledge of various drinking cultures. It is what Kavitha Saravanan discovered when she pitched the business proposition of importing and marketing the distinctly Japanese drink of shōchū in Chennai to TASMAC officials.
“[TASMAC] wanted to categorise the drink. They asked me if it should be registered under whiskey. When I told them it was a neutral drink, they asked me if it was vodka,” she laughs, adding, “I was at pains to explain to them that shōchū was neither.” She, however, had to comply with TASMAC’s arbitrary classification practice to get her products out.
Kavitha, through her trading firm Shirokin India, is marketing three Shōchū drinks — Den En Gold (priced at ₹ 3,960), Tan Taka Tan (₹ 3,280) and Grand Bleu (₹ 2,900) in select Elite TASMAC outlets in Chennai (Phoenix MarketCity, Forum and VR malls, Parsn Complex in Nungambakkam, Vijaya Nagar in Velachery and Gokul Arcade in Adyar) as well as Brookefields mall in Coimbatore.
At a launch event in Off The Record on Kodambakkam High Road, Kavitha says that she intends to popularise the drink in Chennai as an alternative to hard liquor, courtesy shōchū’s lower ABV (alcohol by volume of 20-25%) measure.
A distilled beverage, shōchū is made from grains like rice and barley; and sweet potatoes. “There are at least 40 different variations of shōchū. It can be distilled from buckwheat, carrots, brown sugar, chestnuts and even sesame,” says Sunil Suresh, general manager, Shirokin India.
It is just one of the similarities that shōchū shares with the more popular Korean-origin drink soju, also a neutral drink that boasts a lower ABV.
Curated menus
Like soju, Kavitha notes that shōchū is best when paired with food, and can be consumed either as a cocktail, neat or on the rocks.
To that end, Shirokin India is negotiating with restobars and hotels in the city to introduce curated menus with dishes than can be specifically had with shōchū cocktails and shots, says K Saravanan, vice president of the trading firm.
Off The Record’s starting platter was an indicator. With chicken and avocado bits held together by the nori to go with wasabi dip, this iteration on a sushi helps “amplify the smell and taste” of the shōchū, Saravanan adds.

While we get to taste all three, it is Tan Taka Tan that trips the sensor in our taste buds. Unlike the other two, Tan Taka Tan is distilled from the beefsteak plant (shiso in Japanese), which Kavitha refers to as the “Japanese basil”.
Delivering a minty flavour and a heady aroma, Tan Taka Tan tastes, essentially, like a lime mint cooler on fire, if that is ever possible.
Den En Gold gives off the oak flavours singular to Scottish single malts while the Grand Bleu has a bit of smoke to it, which settles down in a few minutes, if you let the cocktail in your hand sit for a couple of minutes.
While Den En Gold is manufactured in Kagoshima in Japan, Tan Taka Tan and the Grand Bleu are native to Hokkaido. Though opting to market and distribute it through premium restaurants may have been a more profitable bet for Kavitha, she says that it was her desire to make shōchū “accessible” to people in Tamil Nadu that makes it worthwhile having to go past TASMAC’s iron curtain.

Importance of laptops :
In the modern world, one of the most important and necessary items of use is a computer or a laptop. It plays a vital role in his every day work and is of great help.
Charles Babbage has given the best gift possible to the humans by inventing a computer.
There was a time when people use to write long articles by hand but gone are those days, because now, it's done through typing on a computer or a laptop. A laptop is a more compatible and compact version of a computer. It's just like our notebook but its an advanced one.
Laptop computers can suffice every single need of today. We can work, surf the internet, play games, watch TV and lots more.
It increases the efficiency of the humans resulting in great and optimum utilization of time and energy. One more important aspect of laptops and computers is that people can bank online, shop online, buy/sell online, work online and earn online too.
So, this invention has revolutionized our economy in a positive way. It is due to this reason that computers have reached every nook and corner of the world and is in great use. It pays importance in every field may it be education, sports, news, entertainment or cooking.
These gadgets have brought the world together and close to each other. It makes the world look so simple and small. We as humans must try to be as much techno savvy as possible to make optimum utilization of these gadgets and take our economy and world towards the path of success.
Importance of laptop service center:
Being portable and lightweight, we carry it with us to execute many simple to complex tasks easily with the aid of it. This is why when our laptops face issues like overheating, malfunctioning and shutting down suddenly, we cannot concentrate on any work until we get it fixed or repaired. It becomes our headache.
How Raminfotech help us :
To help us get rid of these issues, many laptop service centers have come to the scene. A significant number of these service centers are called dedicated service centers. A dedicated service center is a company authorized service center. It offers multiple services for a particular brand. A dedicated laptop service center never works for the other brands. Sometimes, it is directly controlled by a company. Besides, the company can hire a contractor or a third-party vendor to offer uninterrupted services on behalf of it. The contractor solves various issues faced by the users of a particular brand. In many cases, it never takes money from a customer- if the issues come within the warranty periods. In that case, the tech support professionals take the signature of a customer and deliver the product.
Multi brand laptop service center :
As the consequence of it, we get to see many dedicated laptop service centers belonging to various reputable companies like Dell, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, Toshiba, Compaq, HCL, etc. If your laptop or notebook does not work properly or you need to solve an overheating issue, you should visit a dedicated service center. Based on the manufacturing company, you just need to find one located very close to your home. If you have faced the issue within the warranty period, you do not need to pay for it. Besides, in order to enjoy all benefits- you need to check the facilities ensured by the company at the time of purchasing the notebook.
Customer support :
The customer support executive will ask your product number and model number. After that, they will forward your matter to the concerned department. Once your matter is processed, you will receive a call or an SMS. This call or SMS will let you know the expected time and the name of the person coming to fix the issues. The company representative will ask you to show the bill. After checking and verifying it with your given information.

GPS vs reading your city.
The rise of ubiquitous GPS and other navigation technology has made us passive commuters rather than active boulevardiers. We no longer feel the need to 'read' a city since our smartphone can tell us where to turn. I once took an auto-rickshaw ride in Chennai with a driver who was new to the city and didn't know the route to the destination. Throughout the journey, he navigated entirely through oral directions from passers-by and neighbouring vehicles at every junction. He would get three or four instructions at a time — turn right, ride straight on till a movie theatre appears on the right, take the road alongside the theatre. He proceeded with these instructions until he reached his next informant. After 20 minutes, quick directions from around six passers-by and, miraculously, not a single wrong turn, we reached our destination. Navigating in India has always been more than getting from point A to B, more about oral directions more than maps and signages. Directions which come with their unique set of quirks and local knowledge — a 'roundtaanaa' in Chennai is a Circle in Bangalore, a 'dead end' means a T-junction, the colour of a house is usually more important than the door number (which would have an old version and a new version). How does the GPS-revolution and ubiquitous technology fit into this system of informal landmarks and asking the passerby which bus to take?   There is something unsettling about outsourcing the use-it-or-lose-it skill of navigation to a device, and running the risk of getting lost with a drained cell phone battery and no sense of direction. Mobile phones began changing the way we move even without GPS — when the bus-ride experience transitioned from looking-out-the-window-or-at-people to playing-Candy-Crush-Saga-oblivious-to-the-crowds-and-location-of-the-bus, when walks in the neighbourhood started involving talking on the phone to a friend across the city rather than a next-door neighbour. “It turns the boulevardier into a sequestered individual, the flaneur into a figure of privacy. And suddenly the meaning of the street as a public place has been hugely diminished,” wrote architectural critic Paul Goldberger about mobile phones in his piece ‘Disconnected Urbanism’, about how a place no longer has an all-consuming effect as you are never really cut off from other places anymore. With increasing dependence on GPS, the experience of moving and navigating in the city has further changed — in a classic urban design text, The Image of the City, architect and urban planner Kevin Lynch explored how different parts of the city are recognised and organised by people into coherent patterns, forming paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. Landmarks prove to be a very important feature of legibility, which get reinforced as the journey becomes more familiar, helping people form a sense of place, a memory, a sub-conscious absorption of the way you get from point A to point B.   The landmarks may be inconsequential — a crowd of people around a tea-shop mark a point in your journey, or even the smell or sounds of a certain place help orientation and navigation. In cities where Internet penetration and mapping is still low, these forms of casual landmarks are often more important in navigation, a fact that was recognised by Google when they did a study to implement Google Maps in India. “Google Maps would say: ‘Head southeast for 0.2 miles.’ A person would say: ‘Start walking away from the McDonald’s,” they report in the official blog, after running a research study on visual cues and wayfinding by calling people and asking for directions, and finding that landmarks were easier to see and remember than street names, which are often hidden in visual noise. The final design was thus tweaked to give more prominence to landmarks or buildings along routes because people often wanted to compare and confirm where they really are. This persistence of landmarks and oral directions is not just about low internet penetration and refusal to move with the pace of technology. It is a reflection of the way people continue to interact with the vast part of the city’s urbanscape that is still unmapped but still a vivid, important part of the city’s daily rhythms. Although many urban middle-class Indians may have had their life made easier by being able to share their location after calling an Uber or following American-accented GPS instructions while driving in a new route, the city is much more complex than what the maps offer — ‘tea kadais’ and roadside hotels; street-hawkers selling coconut water or kitchen utensils, unnamed alleys and informal settlements; the vegetable-vendor who transforms into a kolam-vendor during festivals; the electronics shop that repairs even pen-drives.   Streets that are named and numbered are often unpredictable — a 2nd Cross may have a 4th Cross after it, and the 3rd Cross may be sitting four lanes away. So, that broken wall or small temple under a tree becomes important to distinguish one street from another. Dual street names add to the mystery — the auto driver may tell you he is turning on Oliver Road when the board says Musuri Subramaniam Road. The collective memory of people who are used to the older colonial names hasn't yet disappeared, making Mount Road very difficult to replace mentally with Anna Salai. In this casual and intangible way, the past constantly interacts with the present, and landmarks that have long ceased to exist are still important navigation cues — I was once told off by an auto-driver for trying to explain my destination in Adyar as a ‘large car showroom on LB Road’ rather than to just say ‘Eros Theatre’ — this single-screen cinema hall has long vanished from the city’s urban fabric, but collective memory is too strong to vanish as easily. The commuters of today who still fondly refer to old street names are likely to eventually be replaced by a GPS-savvy generation that prefers strictly defined, organised codifications and being rigidly told where to go, when to turn and which route is the best. But there is something unsettling about outsourcing the use-it-or-lose-it skill of navigation to a device, and running the risk of getting lost with a drained cell phone battery and no sense of direction. Where ubiquitous technology will change the imagination and experience of the city is in the gradual erosion of undocumented local knowledge by a rigid system that reduces our capacity to remember routes, notice landmarks and recognise districts because we no longer have a reason to ‘read’ the city, no reason to look out of the window to recognise where to get off the bus because your phone can tell you when to.
