Denzel Bowles on playing for TNT: I’m here to win a championship
“I’m here to win a championship,” TNT team manager Virgil Villavicencio quoted Bowles as saying, during a chat with FOX Sports on Monday.
The 27-year-old Bowles has joined TNT after spending his first 4 PBA seasons with the San Miguel Corp.-owned Star Hotshots.
Bowles though lasted just 5 games during his latest stint with Star last season, owing to some personal reasons that forced him to leave the Hotshots prematurely and leading to the arrival of Ricardo Ratliffe.
The 6-foot-9 Bowles sure knows what he’s talking about, having led the Purefoods franchise, then known as B-Meg to the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup title, ironically against Talk ’N Text (now TNT) via a 7-game Finals battle.
Although TNT won’t start training till Wednesday after taking a weeklong break since losing in 7 games to defending 2-time Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beer in the semifinals, “Monster Bowles” already hit the gym just hours after arriving from the United States on Monday morning.
“We don’t start (practice) till Wednesday pero gusto niyang maaga dito (in Manila), so when he arrived around 4 a.m., we just had breakfast and then, nag-usap sila ni coach Nash (Racela),” shared the amiable TNT official.
“Then he’s at Moro (Lorenzo gym, inside Ateneo campus) with our trainer. So nag-weights lang ng konti. Looks okay naman.”
Known for his athleticism and long-range shooting, Bowles is fresh off a month-long stint with Al Moutahed Tripoli in the Lebanon basketball league, where he posted averages of 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
Aside from scoring, the energetic Bowles is expected to bring in a strong defensive presence, having posted 2.12 blocks during his 4-year stint with Star.
The former James Madison U standout owned PBA career averages of 26.27 points, 13.36 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 59 games.
