somehow, i have lately encountered a disproportionate number of fanfictions set in either my current town of residence or the town where i grew up, neither of which i believe any of the characters ever go to in canon

#one of these is 'small city you may have heard of if you live in this country' which. ok fine.#the other is a medium-sized town that when you mention the name people say 'i don't think that's a real place'#which. is MUCH weirder to see as a fanfiction setting #sooo tempted to be like 'i know you didn't care enough to look up anything about this town BUT the only place it makes sense for your #coffeeshop au to be set is half a block from the 1930s movie theater that is still in operation. which you would have enjoyed mentioning!!'#my downtown lore knowledge is now useless to me in every context EXCEPT as the local color reader for your fanfic. why didn't you ask me!!
