Paleo Bread Review
Paleo Bread Review
Yesterday I was shopping at our local health food store with the only intention of picking up low carb flour and some low carb sweeteners for some upcoming recipes .  Somehow I made my way to the frozen section looking at Paleo bread.  The carb and dietary fiber ratio had me taking a double take.
Total Carbohydrates 6 grams – Dietary Fiber 5 grams = Net Carbs 1 gram!  Too good to be true, right?  Is there really such a thing as low carb bread? It must have absolutely no taste. I will take the risk at approximately $6.00 for the loaf and do a paleo bread review for our low carb readers.  This is not a sponsored post. Only out of curiosity are we doing this review and we wanted to share our genuine and honest opinion with you so that you can make your own decision before you buy paleo bread.
The bread comes frozen so when I got home I put it in the refrigerator to thaw knowing I will be trying it right away.  As soon as I tried to take one piece from the loaf, I noticed it was very dense and could easily fall apart.
I decided to make a quick grilled cheese since I was out of avocado to make my favorite, avocado toast!
Placing the slice of bread and provolone cheese with a little butter in the skillet, I cooked it on low to medium heat.  Just like making any grilled cheese, I put another buttered slice of bread on top of the cheese and continued cooking for about 5 minutes.
Looking and hoping for that grilled toast crispiness on the bread slices I turned up the heat to medium.  Still no toasty-ness so I added some mayonnaise on the top of the slices of bread and flipped them over and cooked another 5-6 minutes on medium heat.  I didn’t grow up knowing that some people put Mayo on the bread (top of the bread that is near the skillet) to make grilled cheese sandwiches to achieve a little more of a crispy layer.
Spreading some mayo on the outer side of the bread may have helped a little but because the bread is so dense, you just aren’t going to achieve that crispiness of a real grilled cheese on sourdough bread.
The taste of the bread was just okay.  I wasn’t expecting much and after trying some low carb ice cream last night that I immediately threw out, I thought if I was really missing the bread texture I could do this with a little avocado spread, peanut butter or almond butter.
The texture of the bread was just okay as well.  Again, not having a whole lot of expectations, it held it’s shape pretty well meaning it didn’t fall apart when flipping the sandwich over in the skillet. Still, you needed to handle it carefully.
It was also dry and I felt like I needed some water to wash it down.
What about toasting it in the toaster?
I was able to pull a slice from the loaf without it crumbling and put it in the toaster however, I had to do it carefully.  I set the toaster on medium high and it took two times pressing the handle down for me to get somewhat of what one might call toast.
I spread a little peanut butter on top and cut the toast on a diagonal.  Again, it held its shape, without crumbling, when cutting and spreading the peanut butter so that was good.
The peanut butter gave it a more palatable taste but still needed to wash it down with water.
Overall, I give this paleo bread review a 3 star review (out of 5).  Dean didn’t care for it at all (but he doesn’t love bread like I do!)
Pros:  1g of net carbs, held its shape, non GMO
Cons: dense texture, dry, little taste, doesn’t toast well
I made some low carb breadsticks and we both loved them so I am anxious to share that recipe with you next time.
