Today I subjected myself to the awful ordeal known as bra shopping because my eight year old bras (old enough to be halfway through grade school) have all decided to give up their tenuous hold on my torso.
After so many brave years of service, I wish them well.
Last time I went bra shopping I went to Nordstrom, but Nordstrom no longer exists in Canada, joining its fallen brethren, Sears, Target, and Bed Bath and Beyond in the venture capital graveyard. Eight years ago, at Nordstrom, a Russian lady with a severe blonde updo told me I have European breasts, whatever that meant, and I wore the three bras she sold to me for the better part of a decade, apart from an emergency sports bra purchase last year when I found myself in the resort town of Banff sans underwear. (That bra doesn’t earn the “sports” designation unless that sport is chess, but that’s a story for another time.)
So I did what any person with tits does, and turned to reddit to recommend a bra shop for me. The closest one was a few suburbs away, but it had good recommendations. And it’s next door to a good coffee shop! But when I turned up there it was so hot I didn’t want coffee and also it became clear this is not the kind of bra shop where you grab some bras and try them on until one turns out ok. By ok I mean it doesn’t make you feel like you’ve got three tits like that woman in Total Recall. No this is the kind of bra shop where they measure you and bring you the bras that they think will fit, in a vaguely patronizing and horrifying manner. Also you just stand there in your underwear for what feels like seven hours while people just wander past.
Luckily I have kids so I have no dignity left whatsoever.
The nice lady working there showed me to a fitting room and gave me a skeptical once-over.
“What size bra are you wearing now?” She asked. I feel like it’s important to note that she was wearing a cowboy hat the entire time this fitting occurred, because reasons, which I won’t go into on account of how you can probably dox me just from knowing I’m in Canada so I shouldn’t get more regionally specific. Though the cowboy hat may give it away.
I told her, and I immediately knew I was wrong about my bra size, because the first rule of shopping for bras is that you are wrong about your bra size.
“I don’t think so,” she said, kindly, and proceeded to bring me a bra with an F cup. I’ve been wearing a D cup for lo these eight years. No, apparently I’ve jumped right over E and straight into F. Also the Russian lady at Nordstrom had me in the wrong size band, and also whatever else European breasts means it also apparently signifies that I have a very odd shape because only two bras at this entire bra shop fit me. One of them was $225 and also lacy and scarlet. It did fit really well, but I politely demurred on it, as what I really wanted was not lacy and scarlet. I wanted a beige bra! Good old beige! I am not living a scarlet lace bra life! I am living a beige bra built by engineers with enough structural integrity to hold a cliff face together life.
The lady in the cowboy hat was quite sympathic. “You must have had so much trouble buying bras,” she said. “It’s not your fault! The bra industry is just like that for some people.”
I felt like I was in church and the priest just told me I was a fallen sinner but Jesus loves me anyway.
Alas, even though the lady in the cowboy hat was very nice, they didn’t have a single beige bra in my F cup size so they ordered one in for me. It will come next week. And then I got home and nearly cried because??? Why can’t I just buy a bra??? At a shop that sells bras???? At a SHOP THAT SELLS BRAS.
That’s when I realised I hadn’t eaten lunch which is probably why I was crying over beige bras so I as I write this I’ve eaten a whole bag of white cheddar flavoured popcorners.
The moral of this story is to not have breasts. The end.

Capsule Wardrobe: 1860s Corset
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm in my peach era.
While not technically the first garment that I've made for my Capsule Wardrobe project, this corset is, quite literally, the foundation of that project from which everything else will be built. It is also a piece that has been a long time coming for me, and I'm thrilled to finally have it done.
Some of my long-time followers will perhaps be familiar with my struggles to fine a bust support system that works for me. Not only is my bra size very hard to find (I've only found it in-store at Nordstroms, and the closest Nordstroms to me is a three-hour drive), but even the bras that do fit me tend to be fairly uncomfortable and often fail to provide the type of support I'm looking for. I've been getting by the last few years with a series of ill-fitting sports bras and dresses with supportive bodices which has been okay-ish, but still leaves a lot to be desired. When I decided last year that I would begin working in earnest to fill in the holes in my me-made wardrobe, I knew that tackling bust support had to be one of the first things I did, and I knew that I had to make a corset.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some in progress details.
After some months of deliberation, I decided that I wanted to make the 1860s corset from Redthreaded. While I did originally consider just using my 1890s corset as my day-to-day support, I ended up liking the silhouette of the 1860s better. The 1860s silhouette features a lower bust that, funnily enough, feels more in line with our modern silhouettes than the 1890s. The more dramatic hip gussets don't hurt either.
Along with a strength layer of white cotton coutil, I used some of the pink silk taffeta left over my my 18th c. robe a la francaise that I made earlier this year. The Redthreaded pattern was easy to follow (I have yet to make a Redthreaded pattern that isn't easy to follow - I would absolutely recommend them if you're looking to get into corsetry), and this entire garment came together in about a week.
Overall, I'm obsessed. The pink silk was exactly the right choice. It's pretty, luxurious, and decadently femme. The urge to eat bon-bons while swanning about the house increases 100% when I wear it. I also love the shape it gives me. It's subtle, but my bust is lifted, my waist is nipped in, and it smooths out my hips. It has so far fit seamlessly into my existing wardrobe, and has been incredibly helpful with getting my wool walking skirts to sit the way they should. I'm extremely pleased.
And yes, it is comfortable. Oh my gods it is so comfortable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also the first time I've flossed a corset. I chose white flossing to compliment the pink. It's simple, dainty, and I think puts the cherry on right on top of this absolute confection.

It's really funny that like, every lingerie ad has the models blatantly wearing the wrong size or a bad fit for their breast shape. No wonder so many women go through life in constant pain because of their bras if THIS is the image they're comparing themselves to.
Here's the truth I learned when bra shopping this year and getting measured by a professional at a small local lingerie store: bras aren't supposed to hurt. They're not supposed to pinch or twist. When they're fitted and put on properly, you can barely feel them except for the support they give.
You shouldn't have breast tissue spilling out the sides or bottom (THIS IS NOT ARMPIT FAT LIKE I'D BEEN LEAD TO BELIEVE). If it's the right size and still painfully digging in or gapping, you probably have the wrong style for your breast shape.
You CAN wear a different cup size between standard underwire, wire-free, and push-up bras because wire-free and push-up cup your breasts differently than standard underwire.
Juicy cleavage has much more to do with your natural breast shape than their size or your bra style. I'm a DD and can only achieve mild cleavage with a push-up bra. Other women can get full cleavage with a C-cup and a plain t-shirt bra. It just depends how much of your breast tissue is centered on your chest, so DON'T let ads lie to you about magic expensive bras.
Don't get measured at Nordstrom. The girl there was obviously not trained well and had me in a painful C-cup, telling me that having tissue escaping out the sides and bottom was "just normal for big girls!" It isn't. The ladies at the actual lingerie store I went to after that were appalled by that statement. Every woman, no matter her breast size, breast shape, or weight, deserves a comfortable and supportive bra that fits her.
