20 THOUGHTS: Dirty Dane, Dirty Scott
USUALLY by now the top eight’s pretty set and we’re starting to plot the machinations of an upcoming finals series.
But no, you feel that whilst Brisbane should be safe now, they need just three more wins from the last eight games, from Adelaide down to even North and Sydney it’s actually a fair bit up in the air.
Richmond, to be fair, are on the march and you’d be a fool to bet against another finals appearance for them, but Freo, Port, Essendon, as likely to make the eight as they would be to finish 11th.
All to play for, as they say in the classics.
 1.       Neale Daniher, Victorian of the Year. Outstanding. Now puts him in as a candidate for Australian of the Year in six months’ time. Has to happen. Great news.
2.       Steve Hocking after the Score Review failed to see a blatant touched behind by the GWS last Thursday: “Adam Kennedy didn’t touch the ball from my view… and we support the decision.” Either he is lying or enormously stupid. Not sure which one’s a better result. Liked him as Cats CEO, he has utterly failed as AFL footy boss.
3.       Whilst we’re on rules, still hate the current advantage rule, where a whistle is blown, everyone stops but if the ball is in the lap of the team with the free, they can resume running and its play on. Pay the free but don’t blow the whistle until you need to stop play. Simple.
4.       Majak Daw is playing footy this weekend. That’s just remarkable. Call him lucky, blessed, chosen, whatever you like, the fact he is here is all that matters, but gee I hope he goes well. Great story.
5.       And Dayne Beams, yeah I get the suspiciousness and maybe there is overlap, I’m interested in the truth not looking to wear black and white glasses on this. But on the proviso its full legit and I don’t have any reasons to think otherwise given last year too, this is tough. Players can really struggle, clearly, but Tom Boyd, Dayne Beams, shit, do yourself a favour and google Wayne Schwass’s comments this week – suicidal winning a Grand Final. The black dog is real and it doesn’t play nice, kids.
6.       Speaking of the Pies, wowee what a spot. Worst performance in 20 years last weekend, and 1999 was a really shit year. The Pies’ best makes a Grand Final, the Pies’ worst languishes around 7-9 wins, this is a team that soared last year on momentum and chemistry not necessarily oodles of talent. So when the gelling takes a hit with injury, exacerbated by a lack of application like the last month or so, all it takes is a red hot North to usurp everything
7.       Here’s the kicker, this result might end up being the kick up the backside this team needs. Sounds like a very honest week down at the Holden Centre, and the team still has enough talent and wins in the bank to be a bonafide top four side. This goes one of two ways – it is indeed a circuit breaker and they get back on the winners list against Hawthorn and now they’re hunting again, no longer the hunted. Or, Clarkson adds to the misery and this is no longer just a rut, it’s a full on slump with no sign of imminent optimism. With West Coast in Perth and GWS in Sydney to come to mind you.
8.       Some are saying this is all Jaidyn Stephenson’s absence. Yeah nah. He is a good player, was in form, and key to the structure, all that, but when it’s all said and done he isn’t that much of a difference when you couldn’t kick more than an Auskick score against a team coached by a caretaker. Bless Jaidyn and his Sportsbet account balance, but he ain’t Gary Ablett Snr. Relax.
9.       So how about North – under Rhyce Shaw they look like the plan that was meant to be realised all along. Tough, uncompromising, a nice streak of skill in there too, they smashed the Pies and looked mesmerising. The body of work the Kangas have displayed since Brad Scott moved on show nothing but green shoots for a positive 2020, I’d have the over/under for wins next season at 12.5.
10.   Then there’s John Longmire, balancing a desire to stay the course in Sydney with the romantic and somewhat compelling challenge to come back to Arden St., as no doubt put on him significantly at the now infamous 1999 premiership reunion some weeks ago. I still think he stays, but North are definitely in the conversation. Maybe 70-30 Swans, not quite 60-40?
11.   What do we make of Brad Scott? We know that teams under a caretaker coach are uncannily good at winning the first week up but Paul Roos aside it’s usually just the one game of newfound ability before regular programming resumes. And history tells us Roos was one hell of a coach regardless. But Shaw is showing with the sample size now that he is coaching this team better than Scott was, so to those teams thinking he can take over next year, why? If anything right now, if I’m the Blues, I’d rather ask Rhyce Shaw if he is keen before Brad Scott.
12.   People often mention St Kilda, but gee Alan Richardson would be stiff to cop it at this point in the season. Showed a lot to like against the Tigers for a long time last Sunday and sure, 6-8 isn’t where you want to be given how many years he has had, but this is not that a dire situation and nor is their plight squarely on the shoulders of a coach who isn’t getting the results. How much longer would you want to be patient in waiting, true, but to this point, I actually don’t think they should sack him, nor should we assume the Saints will have a coaching vacancy to fill this coming offseason anymore. They’re not Geelong, but they’re a damn sight better than Melbourne.
13.   Given the last month of stumble, a top two finish for the Pies looks less likely and this actually would annoy the league-leaders Cats. Pies finish second, Cats host a home final in Geelong against the Eagles or Giants. But the Pies finish fourth and the minor premier Geelong would have to travel to the fourth-placed Collingwood at their home ground. To the Pies, finishing fourth is hardly any worse than finishing second.
14.   But there’s not much you can do about it, Geelong’s ground will max out when its done at 40,000, which in a big final doesn’t cut it. So do you just say who cares no matter what and until the Grand Final a home final is a home final? The argument falls down either way.
15.   Collingwood regaining form is the only thing that stops West Coast from finishing second – the Eagles’ run home for a reigning premier is as easy Elizabeth Taylor at a wedding chapel. Now, they’ve stumbled at home already this season but in September, with a fit Shuey, Yeo and Hurn all playing, they’re back at the big dance again this year for mine. Bloody hell.
16.   And the Grand Final being locked in at the MCG became contentious again this week? Why? It’s not going to change any time soon so why sook over spilt milk that doesn’t even exist, but also, if you’re going to open it up, we think 55,000 at Adelaide Oval is where it’ll stop? What about hosting one at the 35,000 Gabba, to give Queensland a go? I’m sure Shanghai has a ground, I’ve seen it even, when Port Adelaide patronises the Gold Coast or St Kilda there once a year, lets host it there. Grand Finals since the Catholic Church’s been shady have been at the MCG, sure its not purely neutral, but its as neutral a ground you’ll fine. Just leave it.
17.   Orazio Fantasia wants to play for Adelaide. He is ten years younger than Eddie Betts, so perhaps a replacement as the legend enters the twilight of his career. A footballer wanting to head home though, nothing new there. It’ll happen.
18.   Interesting one from a bygone era, in 1938 where the twelve-team VFL was king on Saturdays and the twelve-team VFA was doing its best as the number two ticket in town on Sundays, there was talk of a competition merger that very much almost happened. The plan was the VFL would become Division One, the VFA of course Division Two, and the premier in the lower comp each year would be promoted whilst the wooden spoon in the big league would then be relegated down. Imagine if that had come through, where would we be now?...
19.   Some cricket to end with – firstly, World Cup. Your pick for winner is as good as mine. All this title will take is a match winner or two stunning in the semi, then the same again in the final, and all four have plenty of match winners at their disposal. Who though, good luck. England was cooked last week and now look as good a value bet as you’ll see. Gun to my head though? India.
20.   Marnus Laburschagne, bloody hell, you ideally wouldn’t want to pick him given the summer gone, he showed something but not enough, but he has just become the first County batsman to 1000 first-class runs for the season, so in supreme nick, and in English conditions. Hard to ignore.

Kids.
Take a seat folks, uncle Ollie is about to tell another one of his weird tales… For the first time in my travelling history, the trip didn’t begin in a frog mobile, but one of Geelong’s finest. We arrived to the airport in great time, but as it turned out, so did all of Melbourne who were flying anywhere that day. We joined the cue, which started at Jetstar’s check-in and ended somewhere near Avalon airport. Not only was the line a cause for concern, but the amount of families with young children was in the 10’s to 50’s, it may even have in the thousands for I cared. We eventually checked in, and made our way through the currently under construction international airport terminals of Melbourne, and to our plane. Being seated towards the back of the plane meant that we were first on the plane. That was about the extent of the positives, so if you’re not interested in hearing me whine for a big portion of this, I recommend shutting your computer down and trying again with the blog tomorrow. Murphy and his laws struck us at this point. For a solid 4 rows in front of buggalugs and I, we had kids on kids. To the left, kids, right and back a bit? Yeah, kids. May as well have sat cramped in the McDonalds playground for 10 hours straight. In fact, that would have been more enjoyable. I always make mention of how well I do with seats, this one wasn’t horrible, but it was in the middle 3 on an isle. Which meant that there was zero opportunity to lean on something to get some shuteye, I also didn’t get a beer, and there were screaming kids. I’m sure I don’t have to describe how well I’m travelling at this point. I’ll cut the sooking and get on to the rest of the story. We landed in Honolulu half an hour early, which is unheard of for airplanes, and then made our way through what would have to be the most laid back US customs I’ve ever seen. Another thing about Honolulu airport is that it doesn’t look like its been refurbished, updated, painted… nothing has happened to this joint since it was built. We got through everything and grabbed our luggage, then had the fun task of getting to Waikiki to pick up a car and drive to the north shore. That required a bus, but more importany US dollars. As a general rule of thumb, I get foreign money at our destination as opposed to getting it in Melbourne. Don't do that in Hawaii. If you want to loose $200 in 5 seconds, go to the suspect, and only, money conversion place at Honolulu airport. Alas, we had money and now a bus ticket in to town. The bus trip took about 15 minutes, and the highlight was a young fella in the bus who asked his mum “Are we staying at hotel Trivago?” His mum kept saying no, but he was adamant that they were staying at hotel trivago. His brother on the other hand, who was all of 4, was happily telling the ladies on the bus that they had to come to his hotel and stay in his room. He’d get take out and all!
We made it to the car rental facility, and it continued the trend of annoying shite happening on our first day. To kick things off, my credit card broke when going through the eftpos machine.
No worries, the chip is intact.
Don’t have the facility to take chips on cards.
No worries, Buggalugs has a card.
Shell have to drive, otherwise its an additional fee.
No cash, No debit cards accepted.
At this point, id almost rather be stuck on a big fart box with screaming kids.
After more fluffing about that a male strippers P.A, we ended up in our sick new, pure grunt car.
A Nissan Tida.
Now the fun began, I had to drive.
It wasn’t until departing the car park in Honolulu that I mentioned to Buggalugs that I haven’t driven on a freeway in Australia, let alone driving on one on the wrong side of the road in a foreign country…
Well, in a classic glasses move, we bloody made it without a hiccup!
I hold for your applause.
We got to the town of Haleiwa, our stop for 4 nights, with roughly 5 hours left before check in.
No worries we thought, we can look at the town!
Well, we saw it all 10 times over…
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely town, similar to Byron bay or Cairns, but localized and with numerous other towns nearby similar.
We plodded about for a bit, before biting the bullet and going to our accommodation early and letting ourselves in.
At this point we’ve been awake for more than 24 hours, but were pretty delirious to get tired.
I got thirsty though, so this being America, I went to the service station to get a beer.
The lovely Betsy helped us check in to our Air BnB that we've rented from her, then we were left to our own.
We had a beach walk, which is only 200 meters from the back gate, had some froffies and a sneaky American pizza for dinner.
All in all it was a stinker of a day, Hawaii certainly has some making up to do, because its first impression is not tre magnifique.
And to rub salt in to my wounds. Buggalugs has just informed me that we are going skydiving tomorrow at 8am.
Two things I don’t enjoy. Early mornings and jumping out of a plane 12,000ft above a very solid land.
Pray for me team.

Buy Fremantle Dockers Tickets Now
There is no doubt that the Australian version of football is one of the most popular games played in Australia. Each year there are thousands of fans who love their footy and purchase their Fremantle Dockers Tickets for every game their team plays be it at home or away. For those of you who may not be aware, Fremantle Dockers is one of the most popular West Australian Football Teams. They have a very huge following and any match involving this team ensures that their supporters turn up in huge numbers for the game.
HISTORY OF FREMANTLE DOCKERS
The history of Fremantle Dockers is not very old compared to the AFL league as a whole. Those who have seen and understood Australian Football know that it is quite different from the football that we know across many parts of the world. The reason for the growth of this form of football could be attributable to many different teams and Fremantle Dockers is one such team. The formal announcement of this team was made by AFL on 14 December 1993 and the current name Fremantle Dockers was christened on July 12, 1994. Since then the journey has been on an upswing for this team and it has produced some of the best AFL stars. Since inception they have played consistently well, and their best performance was in the year 2013 when they came 2nd in the AFL out of a total of 18 teams. Recently they have faced some downside but are again poised for a strong comeback in the 2019 season
WHY THE DEMAND FOR FREMANTLE DOCKERS TICKETS?
Apart from the name and fame associated with this team, there are a few more reasons why there is such a big fan following for this club. It would be pertinent to mention here that they are one of the best trained teams and this has been so for many years. Their training has been further augmented due to the high glass training center known as Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Center. It is also the administration facility for the team. The training center is well and truly state of the art and it goes a long way in ensuring that the team stay in fine fettle all year round. Many big names including Steve Rosich chief executive of Fremantle Dockers has gone on record stating that the facilities at Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Center is considered to be one of the best as far as the entire AFL circuit is concerned. This superb training ground and facility goes a long way in enhancing the players performance thereby increasing the demand for Fremantle Dockers Tickets.

A Ranch House Reinterpreted For A Modern Rural Lifestyle
Dan Gayfer Design has created a contemporary interpretation of the post-war American ranch house for a family that embraces indoor-outdoor living and their rural surrounds.
The American ranch house that emerged in Southern California in the post-war era had a low, rambling form; deep overhanging eaves; large picture windows; and sliding glass doors that promoted indoor–outdoor living. Interior spaces were informal, open and airy, and natural materials, such as timber and stone, exposed. This archetypal suburban house provided Dan Gayfer of Dan Gayfer Design with inspiration for Ceres House, sited on rolling hills in Ceres, west of Geelong. Home to a family of six, the “all-inclusive environment” is designed with their activities, day-to-day living and family and friends in mind.
“The brief was largely concerned with facilitating the multifaceted and diverse lifestyle of the ‘busy’ family, and the constant revolving door of kids and adults,” Dan says. “The design therefore needed to accommodate fraternising between all kinds of people, at all different scales and at any time of the day and week.”
The single-storey T-shaped house is composed of two perpendicular wings, each one-room deep to allow for views and light. The east-west living wing houses the sitting/dining/kitchen area and a living room separated by a floor-to-ceiling sandstone fireplace; and the north-south wing contains bedrooms and wet areas. A terrace stretches alongside both wings, connecting the interior with the extensive outdoor living space. “It shares the same roof structure as the residence and gives the impression that some of the walls were simply removed to create this exterior living area,” Dan explains.
The house, constructed by local builder Built by Wilson, is oriented for 180-degree views and large picture windows and sliding glass doors allow them to become part of the design and aesthetic. “The design unashamedly takes the views on offer and integrates them into the interior design,” says Dan. “They are not borrowed but practically stolen from the surrounding landscape to become part of the interior.”
The size and layout of interior and exterior spaces has been carefully considered and designed to facilitate the family profile in regards to size, social groups, lifestyles and interests. “It became more about the structure of spaces and functions as opposed to their physical boundaries,” says Dan. “Where and how do people congregate? Do particular spaces have the capacity to facilitate a diverse range of functions, activities and interactions? How do people move from one internal space to another? Where could one escape for some quiet time? How do you comfortably move from inside to out, and at what locations?” This meant the design team could be less restrained in designing spaces larger than accustomed to in order to facilitate interactions at all scales between family members and friends.
As the views draw in the rural surrounds, so too does the aesthetic of the interior and exterior with timber and stone elements. This includes a mixed timber palette of Blackbutt cabinetry, Cedar linings, American oak flooring and Spotted Gum timber decking, as well as burnished-concrete floor. The double-sided fireplace between the living room and sitting/dining/kitchen is crafted with Mt Angus sandstone and timber cavities defined with raw steel sheeting; and the cedar-lined cathedral ceiling “brings a grand, almost imposing, character to the open area,” says Dan.
While the post-war American ranch house was a suburban typology, it has certainly found its contemporary interpretation on the rolling hills of Ceres where the family embraces indoor-outdoor living and the rural surrounds.

Professional companies generally have a wide range of glass types in stocks that include fire rated glass, laminated safety glass and various other popular types of brands. The huge stocks of these companies enable them to provide a fast service.
One of the most necessary parts of a window is the handle. Window handles are divided into two types. The first type is cockspur that is generally fixed in aluminum windows. They are also very suitable on the PVC windows. The second type of handle is called espagnole. This is mainly used on PVC windows. There are professionals who repair and sell both the types of handles. They are also responsible for providing replacement warranty on these handles.
There are various types of framed windows that are made of modern timber. Scissor type hinge system is mostly used to keep them in proper balance. Overflow crowd expected for Richards’ funeral
LOU RICHARDS always attracted a crowd in life, and he has done it again in death, with hundreds of mourners flocking to Melbourne’s rainy CBD to farewell the football legend.
The much-loved Collingwood and media figure has been honoured with a state funeral service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday.
A who’s who of football, media and government representatives have assembled to pay their respects, including AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, AFL Legend Ron Barassi and greats Kevin Sheedy and Neil Roberts.
Watch: From the lips of Lou
The Collingwood contingent is led by president Eddie McGuire and includes coach Nathan Buckley, previous coach Mick Malthouse, past president Allan McAlister and greats Kevin Rose, Peter McKenna and Des Tuddenham, and also in attendance were luminaries such as Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton, federal Health Minister Greg Hunt, Victoria’s Emergency Services Minister James Merlino and former Victorian Premier John Brumby.

Richards died peacefully on Monday May 8, aged 94, prompting an outpouring of both sadness and celebration for a unique man who lived an extraordinary life.
As expected, Richards’ funeral service was more joyous than sombre.
Richards’ daughter Nicole Morrison gave the gathering an insight into Richards the father: “He loved us, and he spoilt us, he supported us, and most of all, gave us the most wonderful life. There was fun and laughter and never a dull moment.
“He challenged you and nurtured you. He was firm but fair when we were young, and became our best friend once he knew we were ready to make good life choices.”

McGuire said that when he reflected on Richards “and his amazing journey from the Depression-era backstreets of Collingwood to the premiership captain on the MCG, the King of Moomba, and the greatest star in the biggest game in town, the media”, he was reminded of the last stanza of Rudyard Kipling’s poem If, which reads:
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With 60 seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
“And what a man,” McGuire declared. “What a family.”
A feisty rover, Richards followed a long line of family members to represent his beloved Magpies, playing 250 games and kicking 423 goals from 1941-55, and captaining the club to the 1953 premiership.
But it was his ubiquitous presence in the media – on television, radio and in print – that lifted Richards to true superstardom.
Former North Melbourne administrator and friend Ron Joseph alluded to Richards’ healthy ego when he said: “Lou was right. He said his funeral would be bigger than Texas.”
On Richards not being an official Legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, Joseph summed up the feelings of many when he asserted: “Lou is a legend. In fact, he is bigger than a legend.”
Former Channel Nine colleague and close friend Tony Jones said: “We as a city, a state and a nation, are all the better for knowing him.”
After the service, Collingwood players and coaches formed a guard of honour outside the cathedral for the motorcade, which passed by the Lou Richards statue at the Holden Centre.

Your memories of ‘Louie the Lip’
A Magpie legend, TV trailblazer and great entertainer – there weren’t many like Lou Richards
We asked for your favourite memories of Richards, from his 250-game playing career to his time as a Thursday night TV fixture on League Teams, and beyond.
Here are some of your best stories.
I witnessed Lou drinking out of Haydn Bunton’s boot
Lou said that Swan Districts, coached by Haydn Bunton Jnr, couldn’t win the 1961 WAFL Grand Final against massive favourites, Polly Farmer’s East Perth.
He said he would drink milk from Bunton’s boot if the Swans won. The Swans won their first flag and I was at Bassendean Oval on Sunday as an 11-year-old to celebrate and to witness Lou drinking out of Haydn Bunton’s boot.
– Brent Watkins, Scarborough WA
The day Peter Landy chased him from the commentary box
As 12-year-olds, myself and mates at the Escort Cup matches at VFL Park used to delight in taunting Peter Landy about his ceramic-looking hairpiece.
Lou, overhearing, said: “Ha, it certainly hasn’t moved and we’re in an Arctic gale …”.
Landy then spat the dummy, lurched up from the commentary box and gave chase.
– Adrian Thomas, Frankston Vic
He delivered a reverse stab drop kick onto my chest from 20m
I met Lou as a 13-year-old on entry to the VFL to watch North v South Melbourne in 1977. He took the time to entertain myself and a couple of mates plus deliver a reverse stab drop kick by the heel of his foot sharp onto my chest some 20 metres away.
I’m still amazed by this skillful act 40 years later.
And who can ever forget his entertaining hosting of the Colliwobbles burial at Victoria Park in November 1990?
What a lovable character!
– Steve Miller, Palmwoods Qld
What did they make of Louie the Lip in Saudi Arabia?
I remember the replay of the 1977 drawn Grand Final. As North were warming up there was an onscreen roll of the countries to which it was being beamed over satellite. For some reason, Saudi Arabia made an imprint.
When the camera came to the gigantic Mick Nolan, Lou said: “and have a look at big Mick Nolan, ‘the Galloping Gasometer’. You need a roadmap and a waterbag just to walk around him”.
The whole family just lost it, and I remember us wondering what they made of that comment in Saudi Arabia. Vale, Louie the Lip.
– Steve Shanahan, Sydney NSW
Drinks in the World of Sports dressing room were unforgettable
Together with four other guys, I was one of the World of Sports ‘Beat The Champ’ quiz men in summers between 1964 and 1976.
After the show was over, all involved would adjourn to the dressing room where Gordon, Lou’s barman from the Phoenix Hotel, was charged with ensuring nobody’s beer glass was ever empty.
Talking with those sporting legends was unforgettable. Fantastic memories.
– Fred Ford, Blackburn Vic
A coiner of nicknames
[I loved] his nicknames for players. ‘The Macedonian Marvel’ for Peter Daicos. ‘Lethal’ Leigh Matthews. ‘The Flying Doormat’ for Bruce Doull, ‘the Galloping Gasometer’ for Mick Nolan, ‘the Flying Dutchman’ for Paul Van De Haar … and the list goes on.
I was too young to see him play, but he was a great commentator who brought fun and a light heartedness to the sport.
– Michael Langlois, Sunnybank Qld
Dusting Collins St on his hands and knees
I will always remember Lou as one of the greats in our game. He was the real kiss of death.
I remember he once said, if the Magpies lose this game I will dust Collins Street with a feather duster. And he did, on hands and knees.
What a man he was.
– Ted Drew, Coffs Harbour NSW
Rowing Billy Goggin across the Barwon
Besides World of Sport on Sundays, and League Teams, Lou was the voice of footy for me in the 1970s and ’80s.
I can still remember him rowing Geelong coach Billy Goggin across the Barwon River.
Thank you Lou Richards, you are a legend.
– Darren Ward, Geelong Vic
There was nothing better than watching Lou and the gang every Sunday
[Loved the] Sunday Footy Show, especially Lou’s handball segment. Can we bring this back?
There was nothing better than watching Lou and the gang on every Sunday, and in his memory we should all remember to be more like him.
– Gabriel Garivaldis, Caulfield North Vic
Piggybacking ‘the Galloping Gasometer’
My favourite memory of Lou? Piggybacking Mick ‘the Galloping Gasometer’ Nolan on the steps of the North Melbourne Town Hall after a bet with Jack Dyer.
My first reaction on hearing of his passing? Like I felt when John Lennon died. A large chunk of my youth has now been taken away.
Rest in peace, Lou. Hate Collingwood but always admired you and what you stood for.
– Phil Rowan, Banyo Qld

The Best of Bold Colour
The Best of Bold Colour
Roundup

Primary Pops
Introducing colour at home doesn’t necessarily mean painting walls and surfaces. A white-on-white scheme is the perfect backdrop for pops of primary colour – seen here in the Eltham home of John Henry and Deb Ganderton, whose colourful Verner Panton chairs and a kaleidoscopic collection of artwork transform this bright, white space.
P.S. I once promised myself I would never used the expression ‘pops of colour’…!  Consider this the first and last time.

The front lounge room features original bench seating with reupholstery by Grazia & Co, skylight which runs the full length of the room, Supertuft Escape Velour carpet in ‘Abby’, and Treehouse’ artwork by Sally Smart. Surface Switch
Colour can be introduced on any surface – why not try the floor!?
A bright, eye-catching flooring choice can be the perfect treatment in mid century homes, such as Matt and Carly Skinner’s incredible home in Beaumaris, which features Supertuft’s Escape Velour carpet in ‘Abby’.  Carpet is making a comeback!
Louise and Martin McIntosh’s home in Melbourne’s North-Eastern suburbs. The timber-lined ceiling is original, the homeowners added grasscloth wallpaper to the walls, and cushions by Swedish designer Stig Lindberg. Photo – Eve Wilson, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.

Incremental Updates
Contrary to what reality TV would have you believe,  a great interior shouldn’t be completed in a week – banish ‘The Block’ mentality! For an eclectic and authentic feel, beautiful rooms need to be layered and added to over time. This incremental approach frees you up to save for items you REALLY love (buy well, buy once!), and gives you time to develop confidence in your decorating choices.
Even a room with white walls can be given an extraordinary lift when layered with colourful objects and soft furnishings. Fill your bookshelves with colourful books and objects you love, and introduce a bold floor rug or soft furnishings in an accent colour.

Wall Treatment
YES, painting a room requires a little effort, but it’s also one of the cheapest and easiest ways to give your interiors a major update, without the need for professional help.
If you lack confidence with bright colours, try a mid or charcoal grey – still ‘neutral’, but with a little added oomph!
We also love shades of deep blue and teal in bedrooms and bathrooms, as seen in the homes of interior designers Amanda Henderson Marks and Lauren Li. After all, as Lauren says, ‘Why not splash around some colour, it feels good and makes me happy!’
Annie Price and Jamie Paterson’s mid century home in Beaumaris. Prints and Patterns
If there’s one thing more anxiety-inducing that choosing a bold paint treatment, it’s installing wallpaper. Terrifying stuff. Understandably, since wallpaper can be a significant investment, and requires an expert to install. (DON’T even think about doing it DIY!)
The right wallpaper, though, can completely transform a room. We loveAnnie Price and Jamie Paterson’s mid century home in Beaumaris, and The Sydney residence of Karen and Bruce Julian, which both feature an incredible array of vintage wallpapers.
Try Flashback Fabric for a brilliant range of retro-inspired options.
In case you missed it in our house tour this morning: inside the Potts Point home of interior decorator Chrissie Jeffery. The master bedroom includes, bedhead in ‘Maggie Linen’ in ‘fig’ with ‘Mrs Munro’ hand-block printed linen on bed, and velvet cushions from Designers Guild. Bold Bedrooms
The bedroom is the most personal of spaces, rarely seen by anyone other than close family. So, if you can’t go BOLD with your decorating choices here, where can you!?
Moody greys and blues are always a popular choice for sleeping quarters, but it’s also worth experimenting with brighter hues!
We love the feminine palette in the home of interior decorator Chrissie Jeffery, and the unexpected orange in Kate and Mal Heppell’s sunny master bedroom!

Start with a Door
My number-one tip for introducing colour at home, particularly if you don’t have the time/money/confidence to tackle a big paint job, is to start with one internal door – so easy!
Just twi litres of paint and an afternoon is all you need!
Madeleine and Jeremy Grummet’s North Caufield family home. Inside the home of Madeleine and Jeremy Grummet. The colourful TV/family room features blue Ottoman from Kasbah Imports, hot pink cushion from Curio+Curio,  vintage ceramic racing car made by 13 year old Harriet Grummet. The  Red/pink vessels on shelving are by Madeleine’s friend Emma Davies, and the orange acrylic bird by Madeleine’s other friend Madeleine Stamer. Colourful Collections
A love of colour usually starts with ‘stuff’. The stuff that catches your eye: bedlinen, cushions, tableware and trinkets… things you buy without much thought for where they will go or how they will be displayed. But, as a collection grows, you often start to see common themes emerge.
Display much loved objects en masse, grouped by material or colour. We’re in awe of the coloured glass collection in the North Caufield home of Madeleine Grummet.

20 THOUGHTS: Too soon to go the Early Crow?
WILL anyone catch the Crows? Every chance, they don’t hand out flags in Autumn.
Adelaide looks immense and rightfully so, above the GWS and Bulldogs perhaps, they are entitled to premiership favouritism. But this is such a long season, and whilst the manner to which they have won has been nothing short of spectacular, the first four to six rounds of a season are ever more largely shaped by who you’ve played, not necessarily a true reflection of how good you are or how high you’ll finish come the end of August, as many clubs are now discovering.
 1.       We’ll start with Richmond. No surprise they got thumped, that’s the distance between the two sides evidently. All this talk of a blockbuster between two heavyweights of the 2017 season was so far off the mark. Adelaide, it’s only presumptive, but look assured of top four, if not top two you’d suggest. Richmond, you wouldn’t put your house on them making the eight yet; with their start, you’d say they probably can but their start to the season flatters them greatly.
 2.       The Crows are going great guns though, can they sustain it, or if need be retaining this form later in the year is their only real question mark. Mind you, their midfield looks super as is, but wouldn’t Bryce Gibbs have been just the cherry on top had their offer to Carlton last off-season been just a smidgen better.
 3.       Let’s clean up the Selwood/Pendlebury stuff – how much intrigue did that get? Especially the knee-jerk scribes hustling to meet their evening deadline on Sunday, who all assumed the ‘stoush’ took place at the siren. It would have taken one phone call to realise that there is clear vision showing the two sparring for at least twenty seconds prior to the final siren and it was just an unfortunate coincidence that it spilled over into the post-game, slightly. But it was nothing, especially if you contrast it to the infamous final siren  at Skilled Stadium between Geelong and Fremantle, now that was something perhaps. Ridiculous.
 4.       How are the Cats going, or how are they looking more pertinently? This column has remained unconvinced and nothing on the weekend shakes me from that position. The only win thus far that you could call, well, convincing, was that over the Saints where Joel Selwood run amuck in the second half. The key points from the weekend on Geelong are that if you stop one or both of Selwood or Patrick Dangerfield the Cats will be hard pressed to win, moreover their game style doesn’t do enough to hurt the opposition. If you play well you should beat the Cats, if you stuff it up (see Melbourne or North Melbourne) then they’ll nobble you. This team is a borderline top eight side to be honest.
 5.       The Pies were not too bad, it was clear in the pre-game interview with the broadcaster that Nathan Buckley had made a stand, he offered that his side will be daring with no ifs or buts this week, and it showed. Sure, they still kicked inaccurately, but this is a side that if it isn’t so conservative has good football in it. Good enough to make the finals if consistent, but that’s too large an ‘if’. Daniel Wells, when fit, does make a key difference though, a nice addition thus far.
 6.       Melbourne should be at least 4-2. This is a good football team. Very nice midfield, good key targets, the only downside is the loss of Max Gawn otherwise top four should be in their sights. How the Dees’ coaches can mitigate that over the next month or so will be crucial, when Gawn gets back they could threaten.
 7.       In fact, if a hypothetical round robin was to take place, between Melbourne, St Kilda, Richmond and Geelong, home and away so six matches each, I’d be confident the Dees and Saints would finish top two, especially if the former has a fit Gawn in the ruck.
 8.       Gee the Dogs were mighty on Friday night. Should have won really, but they’ve had some good fortune in the close ones, hardly lost a tight game for as long as one can remember, so one the other way is probably fair. But with some good names to come back in, they look to be just cruising. We have a lot of trust in the Dogs; they’ll be a force later in the year.
 9.       Ah the Hawks. Quintessential witch’s hats on Saturday afternoon. Stephen Hawking would have applied better pressure. A sloth after two glasses of warm milk could have provided a fiercer contest towards the ball and the man. I’ve heard of miracles happening from time to time, Clive Palmer fitting into a size 40 waist recently, is one, but hard to see Hawthorn amounting to anything this year. This is like Fremantle of last year, but with a worse smell. They’ve won four flags in ten years so who cares, I suppose.
 10.   Off-field, big appointment this week, former Olympian Tracey Gaudry is the new Hawthorn CEO, the first female chief executive at club land so that’s a landmark moment in itself. Interestingly, they really wanted an existing CEO, particularly Ahmet Baines from St Kilda, so something went amiss despite Tracey’s credentials (currently the General Manager – Commercial and Growth at Athletics Australia).
 11.   Speaking of amiss, I can hazard a guess the Hawks are just done, but are the Swans too? If you do the maths, cumulatively, they’ve probably missed a pre-season, or at least half one, over the last few years compared to the rest of the competition by always going deep in September. But is there something internal that’s off, we resort to the ‘tired’ excuse, or ‘gone to the well too many times’ suggestion, but it wouldn’t surprise if there’s something not quite right off the field inside the tent so to speak.
 12.   The two Western Australian teams – good luck. West Coast, look like Brisbane of the early 21st century at home, but look like University of the early 20th century in Melbourne. Maybe if they put out the same side for home and away games, then maybe… no wait, they do that already – who knows what happens above their shoulders when they fly? And Fremantle, was really expecting better. Mind you, they are playing a lot of youth, so some inconsistent excitement and promise might just be the Dockers’ ceiling this year, which isn’t a terrible plight.
 13.   Back on the Hawks quickly, word is already, with this start, and to no surprise, they will become very aggressive in list turnover. They are devoid of any talent under the age of 24, with no draft picks last year and their first pick this year going to fall in the late 30s. So, trading big names out, getting crafty with the swapping of draft picks, they will be doing a mountain of work come October/November.
 14.   Big cross to the umpires on Saturday afternoon at the MCG. Clearly Gary Rohan was knocked out, and this column doesn’t care what the specific, nitpicky rules say about letting play continue, where the ball is, etc., but as soon as there’s any indication, moreover confirmation, that a player is unconscious, play must halt immediately. The fact that the play went on for almost a minute it seems after Rohan hit the ground was deplorable. Maybe it’s the instruction to the umpires to be fair, but either way that was wrong.
 15.   Rory Sloane is the new Brownlow favourite, and about time too. This column is very pro-Rory and like that whilst he may not get the most disposals every week, its everything he brings to the contest in influencing the result. A long way to go, he has a number of high calibre teammates who might take votes off him, but the Crows look destined to win many games so Sloane will poll very well.
 16.   So a breakfast morning show in Perth, not even a sports station too, went with the Nat Fyfe to St Kilda being done. Since then, mass denial and character assassination of the particular broadcaster in question. However, what hasn’t been said is that yes, St Kilda are keen to spend this year if they can, and too right for doing so, a big fish would be timely. Yes, St Kilda have sounded out Fyfe’s management, just as Sydney sounded out Buddy Franklin’s ahead of time, Geelong with Dangerfield’s, etc. And yes, Fyfe would have made a decision by now, or is at least 90%, to which moving to a Melbourne-based club is a key option for him. So, it would not shock at all if come the season’s end, Fyfe ends up in red, white and black. It’s not laughable, it’s still very plausible, we just can’t discuss it you see…
 17.   Quick jab to Essendon. When the emergence of clash jumpers surfaced, many Victorian clubs were staunch on changing their strip, their famous old strip, some citing club constitution in refusing to adapt. Essendon was indeed that club who referenced constitutional regulation as to why they won’t be budged. Now the Anzac Day jumpers aside, the Bombers next weekend against Geelong will run out with a red, wheat silhouette in place of the sash. Now come on, where’s the staunch defense of the red sash on black now?
 18.   Three big games this week we like, firstly Port Adelaide vs. West Coast. What should happen, West Coast hates to travel so the Power will trounce them. What should really happen, the Eagles should have a real go and test how much of a rise Port have made this year. So what will happen? Port will be too good, and we’ll still scratch our heads that the team we watch at Subiaco is the same team we see elsewhere around the country.
 19.   Saturday night we see the Dogs hosting the Tigers. Adelaide’s a great team so those still bemused by Richmond’s start will think ‘hey, big game, could be a close one, if not a Tigers’ win, they are having a great year’. Not yet they are. The reality check will continue, the reigning premier is still the reigning premier, the Tigers are not the reigning anything, not since the early 1980s, let’s just relax a little.
 20.   Melbourne take on Hawthorn this week, firstly, let’s mention we don’t care that Jordan Lewis is playing against his old side, sure, it’s interesting but it won’t make a difference to the game itself. Not only should Melbourne win, but they need to win well. This season has been good on one hand, three-three, that’s encouraging, but they’ve let a lot of points, and ultimately wins, out on the park this year, time to readdress the balance by doing a number on the Hawks. That’s what they ‘should’ do, but we shall see.
