So even if your permit doesn't expire until Feb 28 2026, you could still do your training now and it would still be valid when you go to renew. 

Also note: you can not submit your application for renewal until you are within 3 months of your expiration date. My current permit does expire Feb 28, 2026- I wouldn't want to submit my renewal application any sooner than Dec 1 2025. But I could do my renewal training anytime between now and that date because currently I have 23 months until my permit expires.

New York Imposes Gun Free Zones Throughout State

Among the busy streets and bright lights, New York has a new eye candy for the public: “GUN FREE ZONE” signs. Starting from September 1st, 2022 New York State implemented a new law- gun free zones in high populated areas[1]. This includes hospitals, schools, courthouses, public transportation systems, bars, parks, as well as all other highly crowded areas including Times Square[1]. Why is this new law necessary you may ask? On June 23, 2022, the United States Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision to overturn a substantial part of New York's concealed carry law[2]. The ruling dismissed the mandate for applicants to exemplify "proper cause" in order to be granted a license to carry a concealed handgun outside their home[2]. The Court's decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen removed a key element of New York's gun laws, making it easier to obtain a license to carry a firearm in New York's public spaces[2]. To clarify, the decision does not make New York's handgun licensing requirement invalid. The Court's erasure of the proper-cause requirement was only one of several requirements for acquiring a license for concealed carry in New York. The rest of the licensing system is still in effect and is being modified to specify the qualifying criteria for obtaining a license to carry a concealed handgun in public[2]. Gun control backers argue that limits are needed to protect another right.[3]” The purpose of these gun-free zones isn’t to take away rights and restrict one’s freedom, it’s to keep the public safe. “It's about the right to live, about our ability as Americans to walk down the street, to leave our homes, to go to church, to go to synagogue, and actually be able not to fear being shot. That's ultimately what's at stake in this case,” said Kris Brown, president of the advocacy group Brady[3]. Tom King, President, New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, however disagrees. King argued that an American’s Second Amendment doesn't end at one’s doorstep[3].

King's organization filed a lawsuit against New York on behalf of two Upstate members who were rejected gun permits on the grounds of self-defense because representatives claimed they didn't prove they actually required them[3].
