I think most of my annoyance with Shipping Discourse (outside of "if you like this you are a Bad Person who is romanticizing [x]") can be boiled down to "People love calling things subversive when they really are not."

#you don't have to only enjoy Subversive Things #something can be like. just a really effective example of a common trope or something. you can even Just Like A Thing!#you do not have to be Making A Revolutionary Statement™ with your shipping #but I see so much of like. 'THIS ship bucks [x societal trend] that's why it's GOOD' and the ship. doesn't actually do that.#or 'here's why this story choice is ACTUALLY the Brave™ and Fresh™ and Radical™ one' and it's an example of something we #see all the time but you personally just happened to enjoy THIS time.#and to be clear I am not immune to this. I try to not claim subversion or Saying Something New unless I genuinely believe I can #back that up but. you know. I'm a person. with flaws. and obviously I'm going to look at things I like with rose-colored glasses at times #I also see a lot of like...'having this female character be with [other character] is ACTUALLY the MOST FEMINIST choice' and what #people really seem to be saying is 'this is the choice I PERSONALLY would have made'#which those are not necessarily the same thing!
