The Ojude Oba festival is a social and exuberant spectacle of sound, colour, and joie de vivre. The festival, held in the forecourt (the eponymous Ojude Oba) of the monarch, is an annual event celebrating the culture and traditions of the Ijebu people while paying homage to the King, Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Adetona, Ogbagba II, Awujale, and paramount ruler of Ijebuland. The festival is celebrated annually in Ijebu Ode on the next day of the Muslim Eid-el-Kabir. A colourful and spectacular carnival, the festival brings the town to a halt with every concentration on the pavilion where in actuality the festival proper takes place. Ojude Oba is a true festival of colours. The audience consists of a major set of attendees grouped into age grade sets called Regberegbe. These are children of the Oba who have been named by the Awujale and grouped respectively based on their year of birth. Currently, there are about fifty-seven (57) regberegbes in Ijebu Ode among which are; Egbe Obafuwaji, Egbe Bobagunwa, Egbe Bobagunte Obinrin, etc with each group having its own banners, flags, styles and standards which they hoist and parade proudly at the events.

All Yoruboid groups came together to promote Ojude Oba festival. The Oyos, Ibadans, Aworis, Ibolos, Itsekiris, Remos, Ekitis, Ifes, Ijeshas, Igbominas, Okuns, Oworos, Ogoris, Akokos, Owos, Ondos, Ilajes, Ikales, Egbas, Eguns, Onkos, Olukumis, Ilorins, Usens etc are all united across different States in Nigeria to celebrate with our IJEBU brothers and sisters to celebrate Ojude Oba festiva

In this year's edition on Tuesday, different cultural age ranges — referred to as regberegbe and consisting of indigenes, their friends, and associates — parade in the front courtyard of the king's palace. The parade was also an opportunity in order for them to showcase the rich cultural fashion and heritage of the Ijebu people. The festival is overseen by Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland. Speaking at the ceremony, Dapo Abiodun, the Ogun governor, said he plans to really make the Ojude Oba festival “global, attracting national and international audiences. Abiodun described Ojude Oba as “a symbol of unity and rallying point for the Ijebu people.

NAPTIP arrests two women over sale of 3-month-old baby for N2m in Ekiti
Following tipoff from sources, two persons alleged to be involved in the trading of a baby have been arrested by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in conjunction with the Ekiti State Liaison Office in Ilupeju-Ekiti. Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, the Head of NAPTIP Ekiti Liaison Office, Oladimeji Samson, said a team of operatives led by Mr Emuze John from NAPTIP Headquarters alongside officers of the agency in Ekiti arrested the suspects. According to him, one of the suspects, Ifeoma Ejide, allegedly sold a female baby to one Mrs Funmilayo Ibitoye, who was suspected to have bought the baby for N2 million. Oladimeji said, “My colleagues came from Abuja for a case of a woman that has a baby factory at Owo, Ondo State and the woman was arrested in Owo and from there they traced where she sold the baby. “The buyer bought the baby at the rate of N2 million and she is yet to pay all while her husband is based in United States. The woman that sold this baby has confessed that she is into baby factory. “This issue is rampant and common in Ekiti. Most of these people (baby buyers) use herbs and they are told not to visit any hospital so that they can’t be tracked. We asked her ‘how long have you breastfed the child?’ and she said the first time there was no milk. This case have connection with others cases.” During cross examination, Ejide confessed to the crime. Meanwhile, Funmilayo, the suspected buyer in Ekiti, denied the allegation, claiming that she delivered the baby and was medically taken care of by Ejide. She noted that she has waited for her baby for 25 years, adding, “They said I buy baby, I did not buy any baby. I was arrested in Ekiti. Although I didn’t give birth in the hospital but at the woman’s house in Owo (referring to Ifeoma). We normally buy herbs from her in 3 months for N100,000 and N300,000 for 9 months. “After giving birth, the herb is N20,000. I paid through transfer. I have been paying through transfer. By • Olalekan Fagbade Police arraign Boyfriend, one other over missing 14-year-old Girl Two persons were on Thursday arraigned at the Akure Magistrates’ Court over a missing 14-year-old girl. The suspects, Omolola Adebayo, female, 32 and Oluwatimilehin Agunloko, male, 17, were alleged to have conspired together to commit felony to wit: abduction and thereby committed an offence. Insp. Simon Wada, the police prosecutor, said that the suspects on Oct. 28 committed the offences in Owo in Owo Local Government Area of the state. He explained that Agunloko was a boyfriend of the missing girl while the other suspect was believed to have had the last phone conversation with her. Wada said that the offences contravened Sections 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006 and Section 3 of the Anti Kidnapping and Anti Abduction Law of Ondo State. However, the defendants each pleaded not guilty to the charges. Ruling on their bail application, the Magistrate, Mr Damilola Sekoni, granted the defendants N500,000 bail each and adjourned the case to Jan. 18, 2024 for hearing (NAN)

By • Olalekan Fagbade NDLEA recovers 63,767.3kg of Indian hemp, 82,320 pills of other illicit drugs from 8 States Abuja, Nov. 18, 2023 (NAN) NDLEA recovered 63,767.3kg of Indian hemp and 82,320 illicit pills in eight states in the last one week. Its spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi stated this on Sunday in Abuja and added that five persons, including a wanted drug kingpin, Christopher Onyebuchi (40) were arrested on Nov. 15 at Idoani in Ondo State. He stated that 1,945kg of Indian hemp was recovered from the suspects. “NDLEA had arrested Onyebuchi on March 25, 2022 with 89kg of Indian hemp, but he jumped bail after he was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Akure,’’ Babafemi stated. Also on Sunday, Nov. 12, NDLEA operatives raided Upemen Village in Owo, also in Ondo State where they recovered 1,834kg of Indian hemp, just as 273kg of the weed was seized on Nov. 11 at Ipesi-Akoko. Babafemi also stated that NDLEA officers in Sokoto State recovered 290kg of Indian hemp from a lady, Fatima Salmanu (20) at Gangaren Tashar, Illela, in Sokoto North Local Government Area on Thursday, Nov. 16. Other NDLEA operatives evacuated 808kg of Indian hemp from a forest at Igueben in Edo on Monday, Nov. 13. “Not less than 231kg of Indian hemp was recovered and five suspects arrested in a joint raid conducted by NDLEA operatives and soldiers in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue on Monday, Nov. 13. “In Ogun, NDLEA operatives arrested one Tony Jonah at Abule Iroko on Tuesday, Nov. 14 with 67 kg of Indian hemp. “In Lagos, one Chike Agu was arrested at Ago Palace Way, Isolo with 364.3kg of “Loud’’, a variant of Indian hemp. “In Imo, NDLEA operatives intercepted a truck driven by one Orji Ifeanyi (33) on Owerri-Onitsha Expressway on Monday Nov. 13. “A search of the truck led to the seizure of 82,320 pills of 225mg Tramadol, and Diazepam as well as 32.5 litres of codeine cough syrup and 100 pieces of Molly weighing 49.62gm.’’ Babafemi also stated.
