Shoutout to people with balance disorders
I'm currently at home and not able to work today because of a flare-up of my balance disorder (bilateral vestibular hypofunction/loss). Apparently, the flare-up is happening because I had COVID-19 a few weeks ago, and it has caused my brain to de-compensate for my lack of vestibular function. This is (according to my doctors) super common for people with this after they have any sort of illness.
Because it's not a painful condition, I think people forget how debilitating balance problems can be. The vertigo, the nausea, the blurred vision whenever you move your head, the falls, the people thinking you're drunk, the difficulty explaining your symptoms because they are super weird, not knowing whether or not you need a mobility aid because your legs are fine but you still can't walk in a straight line.
To anyone who has never experienced this, trust me when I say it's really bad. To everyone with a balance disorder, you're all legends and super cool, and you're not alone with this. To all the disabled people out there, don't forget balance disorders this disability pride month!

Sick of seeing the same old body fluids everywhere? Here are some obscure ones to spice things up!
Lymph
clear-to-white fluid; flows through the lymphatic system
Chyle
forms in the small intestine when you eat fatty foods; looks kind of like chocolate milk
Aqueous humor
supports the lense of your eyeball
Cytosol
this is what your cells are mostly full of
Rheum
this is the shit that dries into eye crust
Chyme
what your stomach passes onto your intestine: stomach acid with chunks of partially digested food. yum!
Exudate
sticky wound ooze!
Gastric acid
everyone knows what this one is, but sadly, it almost never comes up in fiction.
Perilymph
inner ear fluid; helps you keep your balance
Vitreous body
this is what your eye is full of. I have some personal experience with it; eyeballs are pretty hard, but if you manage to pop one, this is what will squirt out! crystal-clear, very watery

Whether a particular balance disorder has a cure is often dependent on its cause. Many balance disorders can be cured or managed with treatment. Westend61/Getty Images A balance disorder is a condition that causes unsteadiness, dizziness, or disorientation. Balance disorders can occur due to problems with the inner ear, brain, or other underlying health issues. Certain medications may also cause balance problems as a side effect. Some balance disorders resolve quickly, while others may require long-term medication and management. Treatment may involve addressing the cause as well as targeting the symptoms. In some cases, a cure is possible. Keep reading for an overview of balance disorders, their causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Short answer: Are balance disorders curable conditions? The question of whether balance disorders are curable conditions depends largely on the cause. Some causes that may be curable include: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) labyrinthitis vestibular neuronitis perilymph fistula Mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS) Temporary balance disorders caused by certain medications should resolve after the course of medication is complete or shortly thereafter. Make sure to discuss stopping any medications with your doctor. Sometimes, balance disorders can be a symptom of other conditions. If those conditions are treated, the balance disorder may resolve as well. This may be the case for balance disorders caused by: low blood pressure stroke tumors cardiovascular disease anxiety depression Some causes currently have no cure, though treatments can help to alleviate the symptoms. An example is Ménière’s disease. What kind of doctor should I see for balance problems? If your doctor suspects you may have a balance disorder, they may refer you to a specialist, such as an otolaryngologist, an audiologist, or both. An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, and throat (ENT). An audiologist is a doctor who specializes in hearing and vestibular functioning. Tests your doctor may order to help diagnose a balance disorder include: hearing tests imaging scans of the head and brain blood tests posturography, which measures how well you can maintain your balance under different conditions rotational chair testing, which measures and records eye movements while you sit on a rotating chair a brisk head-shake testing, which assesses eye movements following vigorous head shaking What is the best treatment for balance problems? The best treatment for balance problems depends on the cause. The table below shows some common causes and their associated treatments. CauseTreatment optionsbenign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)• repositioning maneuvers to help clear the semicircular canal of debris • surgery if repositioning maneuvers are not effectivelabyrinthitis• rest and hydration, which is sufficient in many cases • a steroid injection through the ear drum into the middle ear space • antiviral medications for viral labyrinthitis • antibiotic medications for bacterial labyrinthitis • steroids or other immune-modulating medications for autoimmune labyrinthitisMénière’s disease• diuretics to reduce fluid in the inner ear • balance therapy or vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) • injectable medications into the ear to help control severe vertigo • surgery, in severe casesvestibular neuronitis• vestibular suppressants to help treat symptoms such as dizziness and nausea • steroid medications • VRTperilymph fistula (PLF)• restricted physical activity in the case of trauma-induced PLF • a blood patch procedure, during which a doctor injects your own blood into your middle ear to help regenerate the damaged membrane • surgical PLF repairMal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS)• a low dose of the anti-seizure medication clonazepam • VRT • brain stimulation therapy Takeaway
Balance disorders are conditions that cause vestibular symptoms such as dizziness, disorientation, or unsteadiness. There are many potential causes of a balance disorder. Most often, the cause originates in the vestibular system located in the inner ear. Other health conditions and taking certain medications may also cause balance disorders. Some balance disorders go away on their own, while others may require treatment or long-term management. Certain balance disorders are curable, while others are not. If you have an incurable condition, treatments may still help you manage the symptoms. You can talk with your doctor or treatment team for more information about your specific balance disorder, its associated treatment options, and its outlook.

In silico transcriptome screens identify epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors as therapeutics for noise-induced hearing loss.
Tumblr media
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a common sensorineural hearing impairment that lacks U.S. Food and Drug Administration–approved drugs. To fill the gap in effective screening models, we used an in silico transcriptome-based drug screening approach, identifying 22 biological pathways and 64 potential small molecule treatments for NIHL. Two of these, afatinib and zorifertinib [epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors], showed efficacy in zebrafish and mouse models. Further tests with EGFR knockout mice and EGF-morpholino zebrafish confirmed their protective role against NIHL. Molecular studies in mice highlighted EGFR’s crucial involvement in NIHL and the protective effect of zorifertinib. When given orally, zorifertinib was found in the perilymph with favorable pharmacokinetics. In addition, zorifertinib combined with AZD5438 (a cyclin-dependent kinase 2 inhibitor) synergistically prevented NIHL in zebrafish. Our results underscore the potential for in silico transcriptome-based drug screening in diseases lacking efficient models and suggest EGFR inhibitors as potential treatments for NIHL, meriting clinical trials.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VERTIGO & THEIR COMMON CAUSES
Tumblr media
Feeling dizzy or lightheaded can be a sign of many things, but it could also be vertigo. Not to be confused with feeling like the room is spinning, which is more accurately classified as disequilibrium, vertigo is the sensation that *you* are spinning. It can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting and is often triggered by a change in head position. It can be a very disorienting and uncomfortable feeling, and it can make it difficult to perform everyday activities. So, what causes this strange feeling?
Vertigo can be caused by smoking, drinking too much caffeine, or dehydration. It can also be caused by an ear infection, Meniere’s disease, or a head injury. One of the most effective forms of Vertigo treatment is chiropractic care. If you’re struggling with Vertigo symptoms, it may be time to book an appointment with our chiropractic office here in Mendota Heights.
Types of Vertigo & Common Causes in Mendota Heights
Do you ever feel like the room is spinning around you? Or like you’re on a rollercoaster when you’re just sitting still? These are both examples of vertigo, a type of dizziness that can be caused by many different things.
There are three types of vertigo: peripheral, central, and psychogenic.
Peripheral Vertigo
It is the most common type. It’s caused by a problem with your inner ear or balance organs and can be triggered by head movements. You may feel like you’re spinning or that the room is moving even when you’re still. Peripheral vertigo is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV): BPPV is caused by changes in the position of your head, such as when you get out of bed or turn over in bed. It is the most common cause of vertigo, accounting for about 50% of all cases. BPPV can be treated with canalith repositioning maneuvers, which are simple exercises that can be done at home.
Labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis: These conditions are caused by inflammation in your inner ear or vestibular nerve and can be treated with antibiotics if they are caused by a bacterial infection or anti-inflammatory medications if they are caused by a viral infection.
Meniere’s disease: This condition is caused by a buildup of fluid in your inner ear and can be treated with diuretics to reduce fluid buildup, motion sickness medications to help control symptoms, and a low-sodium diet to help reduce fluid retention.
Migraines: Migraines can cause vertigo because they involve changes in brain activity that can affect balance and movement sensors. They can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, as well as prescription medications explicitly designed for migraines.
Perilymph fistula: This condition is caused by a tear in the thin membranes that separate the middle ear from the inner ear and can be treated with surgical repair of the incision.
Acoustic neuroma: This condition is caused by a tumor on the nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain and can be treated with surgery to remove the tumor.
Vestibular paralysis: This condition is caused by paralysis of the muscles that control eye movement and can be treated with physical therapy to help improve balance and eye movement coordination.
Malformations of inner ear bones: This condition is caused by abnormal development of the bones in the inner ear during fetal development and can be treated with surgery to correct the malformation.
Central Vertigo
It is less common than peripheral vertigo and is caused by a problem in your brain or spinal cord. The most common cause of central vertigo is stroke, but migraines, tumors, or infections can also cause it. People with central vertigo usually have other neurological symptoms in addition to dizziness, such as weakness, trouble speaking, or changes in vision.
Stroke: A stroke occurs when blood flow to your brain is cut off due to blockage or bleeding. It can cause dizziness or loss of balance because it affects the parts of your brain responsible for those functions. Strokes can be treated with clot-busting drugs to break up blockages or surgery to remove bleeding areas.
Tumor: A tumor on your brainstem or cerebellum—the parts of your brain responsible for balance—can cause dizziness or loss of ligaments due to pressure on those areas. Tumors can be treated with surgery to remove them.
Inflammation: Inflammation from conditions like multiple sclerosis or meningitis—inflammation of the lining around your brain—can cause dizziness or loss of lead because it affects the parts of the ionosphere Raina is responsible for those functions.Inflammation cuspidate toothpick with steroids to reduce swelling.
Psychogenic Vertigo
It is caused by psychological factors, such as stress or anxiety. It can also be caused by vestibular migraines, which are migraines that include dizziness as a symptom. People with psychogenic vertigo don’t usually have other neurological symptoms.
Anxiety disorders: People with anxiety disorders often experience dizziness and lightheadedness. This can be due to a number of factors, including hyperventilation, chest pain, and heart palpitations.
Depression: Depression is another mental health condition that can cause dizziness. In some cases, this may be due to the side effects of antidepressant medications. Panic disorder: Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of anxiety and fear. These episodes can cause physical symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations.
Stress: Stress can also trigger dizziness and lightheadedness. This may be due to the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Certain medications: Some medications, such as anti-anxiety drugs and antidepressants, can cause dizziness as a side effect.

Perilymph, a fluid found in the inner ear, helps maintain balance and hearing, and is one of the components in the elaborate and microscopic mechanics of the ear. This essential function of perilymph is only possible thanks to its small size — the fluid is teensy, microscopic even, and its volume is less than 0.2 ml in an adult.
Perilymph is so small in part because of its composition. The innermost parts of the ear contain a semi-rigid membrane — perilymph is a water-like fluid that fills the space between this membrane and small supportive structures surrounding it. Its role in the intricate inner workings of the ear demands a minimal volume — which means its small size allows perilymph to do its job effectively.
Besides its necessary mechanic functions, perilymph also serves to act as a buffer and equalize pressure on both sides of the semi-rigid membrane. When there is a disturbance caused by changes in atmospheric pressure, such as during a flight, perilymph mediates these environmental impacts and prevents an uncomfortable feeling.
Perilymph's combination of size and pressure regulation makes it an essential component in maintaining hearing and balance. Without its small size, perilymph would not be able to achieve its role within the dynamic and intricate mechanics of the human ear.
