PHMC Employees Spotlighted by Philadelphia Inquirer
Tumblr media
PHMC employees, Terrell Green, Samuel Tiru and Shinnell Stewart were featured recently in the Philadelphia Inquirer for their exceptional service in local communities.
Terrell, a  Health Educator with Philadelphia Area Sexual Health Initiative (PASHI), a PHMC program, was featured by the Philadelphia Inquirer in an article on his personal journey growing up as a black, gay adolescent in Philadelphia. Terrell was lauded for the work he now does to support the LGBTQ community. In the interview, Terrell openly discussed his family’s unease about him growing up black and gay in the city. He explained that the feelings grew out of concern about his safety. As a Health Educator with PASHI, Terrell helps others experiencing similar situations by teaching sexual health to youth.
Samuel Tiru and Shinnell Stewart, both from Philadlephia Hepatitis Outreach Project, a PHMC program, and Charito Morales, Outreach Specialist with Health Promotion Council, a PHMC affiliate, were also featured by the Philadelphia Inquirer for their work in the cleanup effort along the Gurney Street railroad tracks in Kensington. This stretch of tracks has become an epicenter of the heroin epidemic in Philadelphia, where 75-125 addicts live at any given time, according to the article.
Samuel, Shinnell and Charito were a part of a response team that helped people locate treatment programs and get tested for Hepatitis C, while showing them that help and hope are available. The cleanup project was a three day event coordinated by the City and nonprofit organizations.
