i'm sure i've made a few insinuations about this already, but it's probably high time i finally talk about my take on it; plumage ornamentation is typically a form of allopreening in any given rito flock, and hence holds lots of social and cultural importance for them!
(which isn't to say that it's always allopreening or can't be autopreening — some ornamentations are just part of rito tradition and denote a role or status — but a rito who isn't allopreened even semi-regularly can uh. be a very lonely rito. it can get pretty complex honestly, so it depends on what's actually going on!)
in addition to the mechanics of their own language, ornamentation is another way of casually enforcing bonds and dynamics for the rito. it's on average most often engaged in between family, but not exclusively reserved for them! in trusting and being willing to let someone touch your feathers and/or being allowed to touch someone else's feathers so intimately, you're letting them (and everyone else) know that they're some form of Really Important to you! kind of like "marking" them? it's at once less profound than i'm making it sound yet still extremely, extremely significant sklfjkf
when communicated through direct physical contact, ornamentation is primarily concentrated on crest feathers and semiplumes, which can translate to hair, fins, or simply the head for non-rito. it involves acts like braiding, beading, binding, and general weaving-things-into-feathers. while the act itself implies a level of comfortable, casual intimacy, what's actually used as decoration can give another layer of meaning to it too!
gifting items and materials for ornamentation holds less intimate weight than actually physically handling someone's feathers, but gets the same interpersonal message across! which is how travelling rito, especially those who go at it solo, are able to keep their loved ones close and basically auto-enforce those bonds with them :)
when interpreting plumage ornamentation (in this context), it's good to keep in mind that:
colours of cords, ribbons, beads, etc. are always chosen very deliberately by the older folks. children are encouraged to experiment more, to get a feel for what they want to express (and for what looks good).
level of skill does not always correspond to level of care (younglings are notorious for being very messy with their affection), but general rule of thumb is that the more eye-catching the work, the more you (and everyone else) are being told this person is Cared For!
moulted rito quills are, for a lack of better words, blessings. specific meaning depends on what sort of relationship the receiver has with the rito whose quill is being gifted, or with the rito who's doing the gifting if they're not the same person, but there are always hints of i'm with you always.
the meanings of ordinary bird quills are defined by their colour!
sometimes, things like flowers, plants, and other non-permanent materials will be used just for fun! doesn't lessen the significance of what allopreening can mean :)
ESSENTIALLY, if a rito asks to do something with your feathers (or whatever is equivalent), they are asking if it's okay for them to let the world know you are Cherished. and sometimes — if you're close enough — they don't even ask, they'll just do it!

How are things in Hawaii? I keep reading sad news and I'm praying for everyone there.
Thank you so much for asking! While the Maui wildfires did not impact me personally, I think it has impacted everyone in some way. Watching all the local businesses hustle to get shipping containers filled to send to ‘ohana on Maui, watching the ways the Maui community has rallied together, it’s brought me to tears countless times the past week.
There is a lot going on, people are still missing and may never be identified, there are legitimate concerns around land grabs (meaning rich people or the state coming in and seizing or purchasing land—there is a huge history of land grabs throughout the islands, making this an extra big slap in the face), there are tourists who are taking pictures of the devastation to commemorate it I guess (literally fucking cruel like how dare you, this is not disaster porn, these are HUMAN BEINGS who lost everything and are still fighting daily to fucking survive and it is NOT A PHOTOP for clout).
As someone who worked in local government, my heart goes out to everyone who I know is working around the clock, communications people who are constantly getting state and department updates, firefighters who watched their fucking houses burn down in front of their eyes still fighting fires, first responders searching through remains of people they knew. It’s not just the loss of property. The stories these people share, the horrors they witnessed still brings me to tears, even writing this.
Knowing this is directly related to water diversion and so much of this could’ve been mitigated by creating a plan for wildfires. They’ve been diverting water from West Maui for fucking decades. This area was a wetland and is now so dry that it set ablaze.
If there is anything I want people to take away from this, it’s that indigenous knowledge is the only way we can save our planet and it’s time that we get stewardship back to the ones who manage it the best. I am not native Hawaiian and would never pretend to speak for them, but I relate and empathize in many ways.
Instagram accounts I recommend for helping those in Maui and also for you to learn more about Hawai’i.

Please learn about the indigenous communities that existed where you’re from and where you are. Listen and learn from them. And please, if you can, help educate others around you. I’m not ashamed to admit I didn’t know shit about Hawai’i before I moved. It wasn’t something that was really taught where I grew up. So coming here and learning about the illegal overthrow and occupation of this nation, experiencing firsthand and witnessing how hard it is for people to stay here, and seeing the way they have pride in their heritage and how they kept their culture alive in the face of assimilation, it all has impacted me so much.
I’m so grateful to Hawai’i, and especially the island I live on that called me here, and to everyone who has completely opened up their hearts and soul to me. I can never repay what I’ve been given, but at the bare minimum, it’s my kuleana (responsibility) to tell others what I’ve learned and experienced here.

Greta Thunberg arrest was a posed photop in Germany. Is this publicly known? Or what is the common perception about her. She's the ruling class's "public activist" imo (like PR, brand or whatever you want to call it because activism is cool now so the ruling class will use those optics. Back when war use to be cool, they'd have war heroes to sell you). Anyway she's their spokesperson for ecofascism - a revolution in capitalist economy to save capitalism from collapse. The only actual way to save the planet would be to seize the productive forces under a people's rule so that we elimate the excesses and gluttony of the ruling class, the military etc the largest contributors to the destruction of this planet.

So I went to SPN Nashcon and my step-daughter and I got a photop with Misha. In some ways it's the worst possible photo op because you can't see his face that well, and I'm at a bad, unflattering angle and you can't even see the book cover. In some ways it's the best possible photo op because you can see how happy my step-daughter and I are. We took his poetry book and showed him one of our fave poems and said that he should react however he wanted.
What he did is just bend his head down so he could look and see what we chose. And we didn't pick one of the big ones about his marriage or anything like that. We picked the one about his frustration with a bush that wants to be a tree, when he wants it to be a bush - Eugenia. My step-daughter and I were just both were thinking of that poem that morning, and surprised to find that out, so we chose that one to show him.
He seemed touched and when as we left, he just gave my arm a little stroke that he absolutely didn't have to do. It was like a little motion you'd make if you were saying, "Hey, thanks," or "Bye" to a friend.
So it was an amazing con, and I'm really glad I went. Here's a crop.

Retina specialists undergo extensive training beyond medical school and ophthalmology residency to become experts in managing complex retinal disorders such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and other conditions that can threaten vision. Retina specialists employ a range of diagnostic tools to assess the health of the retina and diagnose any abnormalities. One such tool is optical coherence tomography (OCT), which uses light waves to create detailed images of the retina. This allows the specialist to visualize the layers of the retina and identify any issues.
Another important tool is fluorescein angiography, which involves injecting a dye into the bloodstream and taking photographs as the dye flows through the blood vessels in the retina. The amount of visible light on Earth's surface at night varies by about three orders of magnitude over the course of a month, as a result of the lunar cycle. This change has profound effects on the physiology and behaviour of many plants and animals (Kronfeld-Schor et al. 2013, Reinberg et al. 2016), especially in tidal environments (e.g. Brady et al. 2016). Despite its importance for many organisms, the scientific literature lacks a commonly accepted reference value for the photopic illuminance of full moonlight. As a result, many existing publications report incorrect values of full Moon illuminance, for example 2.2 lux (Marcum et al. 2004), 2 lux (Yorzinski et al. 2015), and 0.5–1 lux (Bruce-White & Shardlow 2011). Even the Wikipedia page for “Lux” currently reports an incorrect range of up to 1 lux for full moonlight, based on an old citation (Bünning & Moser 1969), which in fact bases the value on an even older German text (Sauberer & Härtel 1959).

Measurements and results: Subjects underwent continuous EEG/electrooculogram recordings and completed a performance battery every 30 to 60 minutes. As compared with those exposed to 555-nm light, subjects exposed to 460-nm light had significantly lower subjective sleepiness ratings, decreased auditory reaction time, fewer attentional failures, decreased EEG power density in the delta-theta range (0.5-5.5 Hz), and increased EEG power density in the high-alpha range (9.5-10.5 Hz). Light had no direct effect on cortisol. Conclusions: Short-wavelength sensitivity to the acute alerting effects of light indicates that the visual photopic system is not the primary photoreceptor system mediating these responses to light. The frequency-specific changes in the waking EEG indicate that short-wavelength light is a powerful agent that immediately attenuates the negative effects of both homeostatic sleep pressure and the circadian drive for sleep on alertness, performance, and the ability to sustain attention.
