Pattern of Prayer from a Man of Prayer | John MacArthur

Turn in your BIBLE to the 9th chapter of Daniel – Daniel, the OT prophet, chapter 9. Here is one of the richest portions in all of holy SCRIPTURE.

On the subject of prayer, it has few equals.

It doesn’t teach by precept, it doesn’t teach by theological truth or doctrine, but rather by practice or pattern or model or example. Here we see a man of GOD praying.

And we can take apart this prayer & look at all of its rich components in understanding what the prayer of the godly should contain.

And this isn’t just any man. Everybody knows about Daniel. Either we know about the lion’s den or the fiery furnace or the visions that he had or the uncompromising integrity of his youth when he was endeavoring to keep his heart & his mind devoted to GOD against all the onslaughts of Babylonian brainwashing. We know about this man Daniel who was taken into captivity into Babylon when Jerusalem was destroyed. HE was deported along with others of the very best of the young potential leaders in Israel. And when the Babylonians took all of the remaining Israelites in Judah, the southern kingdom, captive, they wanted to have some people they could train to rule over this alien people who would be serving them in Babylon. And so they looked for the best, & Daniel was among the best of the young.

By the time we find him here in our chapter, he’s over 80 years of age. And as we have read, in the prior 8 chapters, the story of this man, we have found him to be a man unlike other men, a man whose level of spiritual devotion is beyond most, if not nearly all. ONE whose love for GOD is unwavering. ONE whose excellence in devotion & duty is stalwart. HE really is a standard for us. HE is bold. HE is uncompromising. HE is faithful. HE is selfless. HE is humble. HE is loyal. HE is resistant to the world. HE is persistent in devotion to GOD. HE is incorruptible, trus2rthy, virtuous, obedient, reverent, & all the other adjectives you could think of. He’s a man also devoted to GOD in prayer – which is, of course, part of the reflection of all those other characteristics. HE is an amazing man. HE is so devout & so committed to communing with GOD, his life is so built on prayer that he would rather be thrown into a den of lions & eaten alive than alter his prayer life. Certainly he’s the one, if not our LORD HIMSELF, he is the one to teach us how to pray. And here we have a model prayer of Daniel.

The 9th chapter of Daniel is for many BIBLE students a very familiar chapter. But sad to say in one sense, people are most familiar with the back half & not the front half. We are familiar with the answer to Daniel’s prayer that brings us the prophecy of the 7ty weeks, which starts in v.24. Seventy weeks of years determined on the history of Israel, from the decree of Artaxerxes to restore & rebuild Jerusalem to the arrival of Messiah, when HE came into the city of Jerusalem & they waived the palm branches at HIS feet. Seventy weeks of years are laid out until the Messiah comes. And then another week to come & a pact with the man of sin, the Antichrist, & all of those incredibly unique & important elements of that prophecy that predicts the Messiah & even later the Antichrist & a 7-year period of tribulation to come, further defined in the book of Revelation itself. So the prophetic part of this chapter is known to most BIBLE students. And it’s important & it’s wonderful & it’s rich & it connects with all kinds of other eschatological passages in the BIBLE to help us frame up our understanding of the end. But more necessary for us than the details of the future in our daily walk with the LORD is to understand the matter of prayer. And the prophecy that came to Daniel was essentially an answer to this prayer. It was GOD’s answer to this model prayer.

As we come to the 9th chapter, Daniel is in great distress. If you notice the end of chapter 8 & v.27, you will see that he says, “I, Daniel, was exhausted & sick for days.” Sometimes what’s going on in our lives in terms of ministry can be so overwhelming as to make us physically sick. Daniel was suffering from what he was hearing from GOD. HE knew that the children of Israel were under current judgment. That’s why they were in captivity. That’s why he was there. HE knew Jerusalem was destroyed, the temple was destroyed, the sanctuary was desolate. HE knew all that. And he knew this was a judgment for sin. And he knew that there was more judgment coming in the future against the people of Israel because he had had a vision of that.

But he also knew that there was a coming kingdom. HE had a vision of that. And all of this was colliding in his mind. HE knew there would be a future glorious kingdom of GOD’s anointed One, but he also knew that there would be a judgment upon Israel. HE had no one to interpret even the visions about the kingdom & the future. And so he was distressed by not being able to understand fully what they meant. HE was feeling a little bit of what Peter said the prophets felt when they searched what person & what time was being referred to when they were writing these things down. So as much as was revealed, much more was not, & he was feeling the distress of not fully understanding that & also knowing that all was not well with Israel, & there was to be more judgment in the future.

And so out of this sickness, out of this heart-brokenness, out of tHIS Spiritual exhaustion, he tried to pick himself up in v.27 & carry on the king’s business, because he was prime minister. Eighty-plus years of age & he had ascended, because even the pagans can recognize a man of such sterling character & promote him properly to the highest rank in the land under the monarch. But he is stunned & astounded at the visions & left without a full explanation. There’s a big burden in his heart, & that burden is over his people. And it is that burden that he discharges before the throne of GOD in this 9th chapter.

v. 1 sets the chronological historical setting. “In the 1st year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans – in the 1st year of his reign I, Daniel” – the Babylonian Kingdom had ended. It had ended. HE had seen it end. HE had seen the demise of Nebuchadnezzar who became like a wild beast living in the field for 7 years. HE had been there at Belshazzar’s feast when GOD wrote on the wall, “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.” YOU are found wanting, weighed in the balances & found inadequate. HE has seen the demise of the great, vast Babylonian power. HE is now in the 1st year of the Medo-Persian Kingdom, the 1st year of Darius’ reign. HE has been used by GOD to explain visions & revelations to Nebuchadnezzar. HE has experienced the power of GOD in being rescued from a den of lions. And now he’s had some amazing visions. But he doesn’t fully understand how it all will work out.

One day at this time he is reading. HE is reading scrolls, biblical scrolls, v.2. And it says, “I, Daniel, observed in the books” – or the scrolls – “the number of the years which was revealed as the WORD of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolation of Jerusalem, namely 7ty years.” He’s reading Jeremiah, who by the way, he calls a source for the WORD of the LORD. HE had a right view of biblical inspiration. And as he’s reading in Jeremiah, he is reading in chapter 25. THEY didn’t have chapters & verses in the Jeremiah scrolls in those days, but for us this would be where he found this, Jeremiah 25:11. Here is the prophecy from Jeremiah of what was going to happen, & it did happen & Daniel had lived it. HE had been taken into captivity in the earliest of captivities, & he’s been there the whole time.

So in Jeremiah 25:11, “This whole land,” writes Jeremiah, “shall be a desolation” – speaking of Israel – “& a horror & these nations shall serve the king of Babylon” – or these peoples shall serve the king of Babylon – “‘7ty years. Then it will be when 7ty years are completed I will punish the king of Babylon & that nation,’ declares the LORD, ‘for their iniquity & the land of the Chaldeans & I will make it an ever-lasting desolation.’” GOD says, 7ty years I’m going to let the Babylonians hold Israel in captivity, & then I’m going to punish that Babylonian Empire with an ever-lasting desolation. Well Daniel had seen it. The Babylonian Empire was over. The 7ty years had come.

HE also in reading in the text of Jeremiah came across another portion of SCRIPTURE in the twenty-9th chapter of Jeremiah, which added another feature to it in v.10, “Thus says the LORD, ‘When 7ty years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you & fulfill MY good word to you to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare & not for calamity, to give you a future & a hope. And you will call on ME & come & pray to ME & I will listen to you. And you will seek ME & find ME when you search for ME with all your heart. And I will be found by you & I will restore your fortunes & gather you from the nations’” – & so forth. So he knew that at the end of the 7ty years there would be the destruction of Babylon, which had happened. And there would also be the restoration of the people of GOD. That’s what he was reading in the books. Seventy years, for all intents & purposes, was up. HE knows what’s been promised to happen. Babylon will be destroyed. It was. The people will be restored to the land. That hadn’t happened yet but that was what GOD promised.

That teaches us the 1st characteristic of prayer. One, prayer is in response or in harmony with the WORD of GOD. True prayer is in response or in harmony or in agreement with the WORD of GOD. Daniel takes up intercession for his people based on what he knows is GOD’s will. This is an essential element of prayer. YOU say, well if he knew this was going to happen because Jeremiah said it was going to happen, & if he knew that he said it was going to happen after 7ty years & the 7ty years was up, then what is there to pray for? That’s a fair question to ask. It’s not a simplistic question to answer other than to say this, GOD will do what HE does when HE says HE will do it. GOD is faithful to HIS promise. GOD always keeps HIS word, never deviates from HIS word. He’s absolutely sovereign, always accomplishes HIS purpose. It can never be thwarted. HE did say after 7ty years Babylon will be destroyed. THEY were. After 7ty years I’ll bring the people back, they were brought back. And you ask the question, why are we to pray? And the answer is because all prayer is to be in accord with, in agreement with, in harmony with, & in response to GOD’s Word.

YOU think about John at the end of the book of Revelation. He’s had, like Daniel, visions of the future coming of CHRIST. And at the end of the book of Revelation in the final chapter, JESUS says, “Behold, I come quickly.” And what is John’s response? Good. Is that what he said? No. HE says, “Even so, come, LORD JESUS.” And that might seem to you like a strange prayer in light of the fact that JESUS said HE was coming. But that is in essence the nature of prayer. Prayer finds its foundation in the purposes of GOD. Prayer is when you align your heart to GOD’s purposes. It’s when you say, “OUR FATHER who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” even though you know it will be. Sovereignty of GOD, the inevitable purposes of GOD, prophetic revelation, promises of GOD do not preclude prayer. THEY do not preclude supplication. Rather, they call for it. We pray in response to GOD’s revealed plan. We pray primarily to line our hearts up with divine purposes.

YOU could ask the same question about why do we witness to anybody? GOD’s going to save whom He’s going to save. But He’s chosen personal testimony & the preaching of the GOSPEL to be the means by which HE saves HIS own, & He’s chosen prayer to be the means by which HE accomplishes HIS purpose. That’s why James could say, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much.” GOD chooses not only the ends, but HE chooses the means.

Apart from that, it is of immense benefit in communing with GOD to line yourselves up with HIS will. Daniel realized prayer was an element in the fulfillment of the WORD but it wasn’t that technical understanding that caused him to pray. HE wasn’t just saying, “I’d like to be on the deal here.” HE couldn’t help himself because his love for GOD was so great, his attachment to GOD so profound, his desire for the purposes of GOD to be revealed was so encompassing that he couldn’t restrain himself from pleading for GOD to do what he knew GOD would do. Prayer is primarily a way to line our hearts up with GOD’s purposes. HE knew the certainty of divine promise. HE knew the certainty of divine purpose. HE understood the sovereignty of GOD. At the same time he was a man of incessant prayer. And you find this many, many places in SCRIPTURE. We don’t have time to look at even a portion of them, but just a couple of illustrations.

Ezra in chapter 9 v.1 says, “Now when these things had been completed, the princes approached me saying, ‘The people of Israel the priests & the Levites have not separated themselves from the people of the lands.” In other words, they’re still intermarried. They’re still mingled. They’re still idolatrous. “They’ve taken,” v.2, “some of their daughters as wives,” & so forth. “The holy race has been intermingled with the peoples of the land, indeed the hands of the princes & rulers have been foremost in this unfaithfulness. And when I heard about this matter, I tore my garments & my robes,” says Ezra. “I pulled some of the hair from my head & my beard & sat down appalled.” I would say he was pretty stressed. YOU start ripping your clothes & yanking your hair out, throw yourself on the ground & sit down, appalled.

“Then everyone who trembled at the words of the GOD of Israel on account of the unfaithfulness of the exiled gathered to me & I sat appalled until the evening offering. And at the evening offering I rose from my humiliation even with my garment & my robe torn, & I fell on my knees & I stretched out my hands to the LORD my GOD & I said, ‘O my GOD, I’m ashamed & embarrassed to lift up my face to Thee, my GOD, for our iniquities have risen above our heads, our guilt is grown even to the heavens ... We have been in great guilt, & on account of our iniquities, we, are kings, & our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, to open shame, as it is this day. But grace has been shown from the LORD our GOD to leave us an escaped remnant. GOD has not forsaken us.’”

HE didn’t sit back & cooly say, well you know, they sinned so they’re going to get it & there’s a remnant that believes & we’re going to receive grace. HE was plunged, passionately into intercession, confessing the sins of his nation & celebrating the graciousness of GOD to a remnant. So appalled that he sat for a day with his clothes ripped, disheveled, he was so burdened. It wasn’t that he resigned himself to anything. HIS heart was so attached to GOD that when GOD was dishonored he was feeling the pain. When his people suffered he was feeling the pain.

In Ezra chapter 8 when the people gathered to hear the law written, they heard the law – wonderful. THEY bowed down. THEY worshiped the LORD when the law was read. In response to the reading of the law, Nehemiah chapter 9, “The twenty-4th day of the month, the sons of Israel assembled with fasting, sackcloth ... dirt.” THEY threw dirt all over themselves, a sign of humility. “The descendants of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, stood & confessed their sins & the iniquities of their fathers. While they stood in their place, they read from the book of the law of the LORD their GOD for a 4th of the day, & for another 4th they confessed & worshiped the LORD their GOD.” This is just what people do when they really hear the Word, when they are touched by the judgments of SCRIPTURE & touched by the grace of SCRIPTURE, the salvation that GOD provides. The WORD generates our prayers because it reveals the purposes of GOD & our hearts are drawn into those purposes. We pray for those that are lost in sin & headed for judgment. We pray on the one hand GOD will be vindicated in judgment, on the other souls will be rescued from judgment. We praise GOD for acts of grace & salvation & deliverance. Praise GOD for HIS saving work.

In fact, I’ve learned through the years that my best prayer times are with an open BIBLE. I give you an illustration of that on Sunday morning. I did it this morning. I do that every week. I read a portion of SCRIPTURE & then I sort of pray my way back through that, because I’m just lining up with the purposes of GOD, lining up with the WORD of GOD, lining up with what GOD has revealed. YOU have a difficulty praying because you’re sort of done in a few minutes, you can’t think of what to say, just try praying through a text of SCRIPTURE, identifying with what GOD is revealing there. And when you need to confess, confess. And when you need to praise, praise. And when you need to thank HIM, thank HIM. And when you need to seek understanding & wisdom, ask for that. And when you see something that dishonors GOD, cry out of your concern for HIS dishonor. And when you see something that glorifies HIM, give HIM glory. The WORD really teaches us how to pray because it reveals GOD’s agenda & GOD’s character.

And Daniel is reading the scrolls & out of the scrolls came the plan of GOD. And once he knew the plan of GOD & that it was coming to fruition & it was ready to take its next turn & restoration was to come for the people of GOD, he was motivated to pray. So Daniel’s prayer, 1st of all, like all prayer, should be born out of the study & understanding of GOD’s revealed plan & character in SCRIPTURE.

Secondly, we pray not only generated by GOD’s WORD but grounded in GOD’s will. HE knew GOD’s will. Seventy years, v.2. HE knew the whole thing, the desolations of Jerusalem was to be completed in 7ty years & that is because that’s what Jeremiah had said. And you might say, well that of all things makes it unnecessary to pray. Why in the world is he going to pray for restoration if he knows it’s going to come? And again, that begs the same issue, that GOD has not only chosen what HE will do, but the means by which HE will do it. And those people who are most attached to GOD, who most love GOD, who most embrace HIS glory will find themselves drawn into prayer that relates to HIS purposes. THEY will say with John, yes, I know YOU just said You’re coming, but I’m telling YOU, even so come, LORD JESUS.

YOU remember those martyrs in the book of Revelation who were under the altar. THEY are those who were martyred in the time of the tribulation, the time of the tribulation yet to come in the future would bring about a horrific slaughter & martyrdom. And we find some of these martyrs pictured under the altar & they are crying with a loud voice, “How long, O LORD, holy & true will YOU refrain from judging & avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth? How long? How long?” How long is the question.

Well, they had read the 7ty weeks of Daniel prophecy, which I’m sure they will have, they would know that that period of time is a 7-year period. The book of Revelation says 3 & a half years, forty-2 months, so forth. It wasn’t that they had no clue, it was that they simply entered into the reality of what GOD was going to do because HE couldn’t restrain their hearts. Do, GOD, what You’re going to do. Do what You’re going to do. This is not fatalism. Fatalism is deadly to prayer, & it demonstrates that you do not know the heart of GOD & that you do not participate in HIS purposes with all your soul.

Look at 1 Samuel 12. Here’s another illustration of this. First Samuel 12, now the people, you know, they wanted a king, because they wanted to be like everybody else. THEY were having problems in the neighborhood, in the Middle Eastern neighborhood, sort of, “We have a king & you don’t. Ya, ya-ya, ya-ya, ya,” kind of thing. And so they thought, well if we’re going to fit into this neighborhood, we need a king. And so they forced the issue. v. 19 of 1 Samuel 12, “All the people said to Samuel, ‘Pray for your servants’ – Samuel, you need to pray for your servants – ‘pray to the LORD your GOD that we may not die’ – pray for us that we don’t get killed – ‘for we have added to all our sins this evil by asking for ourselves a king.’” You’ve got to intercede for us. We are in some deep trouble with GOD.

“Samuel said to the people, ‘Do not fear. YOU have committed all this evil, yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. YOU must not turn aside for then you would go after futile things which cannot profit or deliver because they’re futile. For the LORD will not abandon HIS people on account of HIS great name, because the LORD has been pleased to make you a people for HIMSELF.’” Look, GOD is not going to destroy you. It’s not going to be over, because GOD’s name is at stake. HIS reputation is at stake. If you were all destroyed, it would be bad for the reputation of GOD. All the rest of the nations around would say not only do the Israelites not have a king, but they have a GOD who can’t protect them. This would not be good for GOD’s reputation. GOD will not abandon HIS people on account of HIS great name. He’s got HIS own reputation at stake here, & He’s not going to abandon you. Still, look at v.23, & notice the context, “Moreover, as for me” – you might have thought he would say, why am I going to pray for you, I just told you GOD’s not going to abandon you? But he says this, “Moreover, as for me in regard to your request, far be it for me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you.” That’s a strange response, isn’t it? It seems like the opposite of what you would expect. Oh, he’s not going to do it. Great news, you don’t need to worry about us. I would sin against the LORD if I didn’t pray for you. There’s no fatalism here.

Once you know the will of GOD, you know how to pray, because your prayers GOD uses as means to the end of HIS purpose. Whatever you ask according to HIS will, HE hears. Whatever you ask according to HIS will, HE hears. So says John 14:13 & 14, 1 John 5:14 & 15. We can’t live in some kind of gray acceptance. We can’t live in some kind of bland neutral posture saying, oh well, GOD’s going to do what He’s going to do & what’s my prayer going to have to do with anything? That is a mark of spiritual immaturity & carnality. Prayer in GOD’s will is a form of rebellion, on the one hand, rebellion against the world, rebellion against its fallenness, rebellion against its sinfulness. Prayer according to the will of GOD is affirmation. It is acquiescence. It is celebration of the divine purpose. Daniel would not accept the way things were. HE wanted the fulfillment that GOD had promised. And so that’s how he prayed. In fact, that’s really the only safe ground to pray on. Peter said this, “The end of all things is at hand. Therefore be sober for the purpose of prayer.” YOU better think seriously about prayer, the end is near.

Somebody might say, well, if the end is here, what are we praying about? Hasn’t GOD figured it all out already anyway? YOU don’t ever want to get to the point where you say, well, because GOD has chosen you, it’s not important to evangelize. Because GOD has chosen who is going to be saved, it’s not important to pray for them. That’s a kind of fatalism that fails to understand the tension that exists within the sovereignty of GOD & our responsibility & the same exists in prayer. Prayer works just the opposite way & so does evangelism. Because we know that GOD has chosen some for salvation, we are motivated to go in the power of the SPIRIT & with the GOSPEL to be used by GOD to reach them. And because we know the purposes of GOD have been revealed in SCRIPTURE, & HE will do HIS holy will in the end, we are motivated to pray in line with that, that we may participate & our prayers be used in the fulfillment of that will.

Daniel prayed because it was generated by the WORD of GOD & it was grounded in the will of GOD. There’s another element, it was characterized by fervency. YOU could say, okay, I accept it’s the WORD of GOD, I accept it’s the will of GOD, but you know you sort of just accept it. Okay, GOD, do what You’re going to do. I affirm it. It’s a great plan, carry it out. I vote for YOU, GOD. I hope YOU do that. That isn’t the way we see Daniel pray. v. 3, “I gave my attention to the LORD GOD to seek HIM by prayer & supplications with fasting, sackcloth & ashes.”

Now we already know that Daniel was persistent in his prayers. HE was very persistent. HE prayed at intervals every single day his whole life, just kept praying. Back down in v.20, he’s still speaking & praying when the answer comes. HE was a persistent prayer. But we’re not talking so much about frequency here, we’re talking about fervency. We know from chapter 6 that prayer was a life style for Daniel. That’s what got him in the lion’s den.

But we’re talking here about fervency in prayer. HE says in v.3, “I gave my attention” – the NAS. The Hebrew actually says I set my face. I fixed my gaze. I pointed my face in the direction of GOD. This is an undistracted kind of preoccupation. This is resoluteness. Unto the LORD GOD – the LORD GOD, the LORD Adonai, unto the LORD. Adonai means master sovereign ruler. Yes I understand the sovereignty of GOD. Yes I understand divine authority, fully. Yes I understand that I am to submit to the sovereignty of GOD. HE is my sovereign, my Master, MY LORD. But I set my face to the sovereign one to plead with HIM in prayer & supplication to the degree of fasting, wearing sackcloth & pouring ashes on my head. All this was ways in which to manifest passion, brokenness, contrition, humility, meekness, cry for mercy.

Fasting in the SCRIPTURES is always linked with prayer, except with the Pharisee who said, “I fast twice a week,” which did him no good. HE did it as a way to demonstrate his superficial holiness. But all true fasting is connected to prayer in the BIBLE. People fasted because they were so burdened with things that they were praying for that they had no interest in food. There was no particular virtue in the fasting, the virtue was in the preoccupation, the resoluteness, the setting of the face toward GOD. HE set his face toward the sovereign & to seek the sovereign with such fervency that he didn’t eat. HE was like Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:8. Hannah was weeping & fasting, pleading for a son. It was like Esther who was fasting & praying for life, or like the Ninevites who were under the preaching of Jonah were fasting & pleading for forgiveness.

Very often in the BIBLE they wore sackcloth, a sign of humiliation, unworthiness. Job, you remember, sat in ashes & threw ashes on his head as a sign of his despair & his humility. Job even in chapter 1 shaved his head. The Luke 18 Publican smashes on his chest. There’s crying, throwing dust on your head, ripping your clothes, as we already read about, sighing, groaning, crying out loud. The BIBLE speaks of a broken heart, a broken spirit, pouring out one’s heart, rending one’s heart, making sacrifices. All of this expresses the fervency of prayer.

Daniel employs then every indication of fervency. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man,” James 5:16. This is him. CHRIST in the Garden is praying so fervently. What’s HE praying, you say. He’s praying to the FATHER & saying to the FATHER, “If this cup may pass from ME, FATHER, please let it be so. Nevertheless not MY will but Yours be done.” HE knew what the will of the FATHER was. HE was a LAMB slain from the foundation of the world. HE knew the plan from beginning to end, that didn’t change the fervency of HIS prayer. HE accepted GOD’s answer but in the prayer sweat blood, because HE was praying with such fervency that the capillaries exploded. JESUS never resigned HIMSELF to anything & HE knew the will of the FATHER perfectly, & neither does Daniel & he knew the will of the FATHER. It’s just that when you’re really caught up in the agenda of GOD, there’s a fervency in your life. And it’s a commentary on our kind of Christianity to look at our indifference toward the issues that concern the heart of GOD. Sin & lostness & the corruption of the Church & the pollution of the Church with false doctrine & the naivete of so-called Christians & their indifference & their worldly preoccupations, all of those things are the kind of things that wrench the heart of the servant of GOD. YOU remember the apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 11 talking about being whipped & beaten with rods & shipwrecked & stoned, but he says the worst of it is concern for the Churches, because who is weak & I’m not weak, who is falling into sin & I don’t feel the pain? I mean, that’s the bottom line. The true man of GOD, the one who has GOD’s heart, feels what GOD feels. The reproaches that fall on HIM fall on me, & zeal for HIS house eats me up.

So true prayer is generated by the WORD of GOD, grounded in the will of GOD, characterized by fervency, & let me give you a 4th one. And this is getting to the heart of it. It is identified with GOD’s people – it is identified with GOD’s people. We’ve already indicated that, because that’s the nature of this prayer. But true intercessory prayer really is not preoccupied with self. It’s very hard to find a prayer in SCRIPTURE that’s just very personal. There are a few. Prayer is identified with GOD’s people. It’s very hard for the true believer, the godly person, to pull himself out & demand from GOD things that relate to him apart from any consideration of the rest.

That’s why in Daniel’s prayer you just notice the pronouns. v. 5, “We have sinned;” v.6, “We have not listened to YOUR servants who spoke in YOUR name to our kinds, our princes, our fathers;” v.7, “To us belongs open shame;” v.8, “Open shame belongs to us;” v.9, “We have rebelled;” v.10, “We did not obey the voice of the LORD our GOD;” v.11, “All Israel has transgressed;” end of v.11, “We have sinned against Him;” v.13, “We have not sought the favor of the LORD our GOD by turning from our iniquity & giving attention to Thy truth.” It’s just we – we. v. 14 at the end, “We have not obeyed HIS voice;” v.15, “We have sinned. We have been wicked.” This is like Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer & supplication for all the saints. I mean, even JESUS taught us to pray, “Forgive us our trespasses ... Give us our daily bread.” It’s not give me mine. The focus of our prayer is, after we have come to really know the heart of GOD, is to carry the needs of everyone. Carrying the needs of everyone is characteristic of the prayer of a faithful person because Galatians 6:2 says we will bear one another’s burdens & so fulfill the law of CHRIST.

Daniel was coming before the LORD for his people. To pray for those around us in the 1st circle of family & friends & then around us in the next circle of acquaintances & then around us in the next circle & on & on it goes. We need to be consumed & burdened not for our own enterprises & the achievement of our own goals & our own ends, but we need to embrace with solidarity the people of GOD. HE regards even the sins of his people & the sins of his priests & the sins of his rulers & judges & kings as if they were his own. HE cannot divorce himself from his people, because he knows he’s part of the problem. I can’t pray a prayer, “Straighten YOUR Church out, LORD. Straighten out YOUR Church,” without saying, “And straighten out me in the process.” I can’t say, “Lord, bring the truth to YOUR people. LORD, may YOUR people love the truth,” without saying to the LORD, “And wherever there’s error in my life, correct it.” I can’t say, “Make YOUR people godly,” & not say, “And make me godly, too.” Because 1 Corinthians 12:26 says, “If one member suffers, the whole body suffers.” Right? Self-righteous people repudiate that kind of identification. Self-righteous people isolate themselves. And that’s exactly what you see in Luke 18 where the Publican says, “I thank YOU that I am not like this man.” HE separates himself. That’s a certain giveaway that he’s not godly. The truly godly man would have said, “I recognize that I’m just like him. MY sins may be different & they may be less, but I’m as much in need of mercy as this Publican.”

Daniel understood as did all the Jews the solidarity of the people of GOD. I don’t know if we fully understand the solidarity of the people of GOD today in our Church & in the body of CHRIST. We all suffer together. I’m telling you, we all suffer together. YOU know that. Sometimes your Christianity is discredited because of the Christianity that some of your friends see on the television that has nothing to do with you. Or worse perhaps, sometimes your Christianity is discredited because somebody has had personal contact with a so-called Christian who brought such reproach on the person of JESUS CHRIST that that has caused them to reject you. You’re not an island, & we must be critics, & Daniel was a prophet to the people & he spoke the truth. But at the same time, to be a true intercessor, you have to identify with GOD’s wayward people & you have to put yourself in the middle & say, “And I need to be what I need to be, just as well as GOD’s people need to be what they need to be.” The secret of intercession is we & us & our.

Prayer then is generated by the WORD of GOD; it’s grounded in the will of GOD; it’s characterized by fervency; it’s identified with GOD’s people, & intercession is built on confession – it’s built on confession. I want you to catch this. HE wants GOD to do his work. HE wants GOD to restore Israel, Daniel does, & GOD said HE would. HE wants to see Jerusalem rebuilt, the temple rebuilt, the sanctuary restored, GOD’s presence to come back – that’s what he wants. But before he ever even gets close to that, look at this prayer. v. 5, “We have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly & rebelled, even turning aside from Thy commandments & ordinances.” Boy, that’s saying it every way you could say it. We sinned; we committed iniquity; we acted wickedly; we rebelled, & we turned aside – 5 ways to say it. And he says we’re sinful.

v. 6, “We haven’t listened to YOUR servants the prophets, who spoke in YOUR name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, all the people of the land. To us, v.7, belongs open shame; v.8, “Open shame belongs to us;” v.9, “We’ve rebelled;” v.10, “Nor have we obeyed.” Keeps on going like that. v. 11, “A curse has been poured out on us” – end of the verse – “because we have sinned.” We have suffered great calamity, he says in v.12. “This calamity,” v.13, “has come on us.” And even in the midst of that, “We haven’t sought the favor of the LORD our GOD by turning from our iniquity & giving attention to Thy Word” – or Thy truth. “Therefore, the LORD has kept the calamity on us.” “We’ve not obeyed HIS voice,” end of v.14. HE sums it up in 15 at the end of the verse, “We’ve sinned & we’ve been wicked.” This is an awful lot of confession here.

You’d say, does he have to keep saying it & saying it & saying it & saying it & saying it every way possible? It isn’t – this is not some kind of technical approach to prayer. This is what is in the man’s heart, & this is very personal. Even though it’s we, we, we, if you go over to v.20, “Now while I was speaking & praying & confessing my sin & the sin of my people Israel” – your prayer has to be predicated on an understanding of your unworthiness. So that we always know when we pray, I have no right to ask. I have no right to enter YOUR presence. There’s nothing in me that makes me worthy to hear an answer & to be blessed, because I’m just a sinner. I’m a sinner like Isaiah. I’m a man with unclean lips & I live in the midst of people of unclean lips. And you say, Isaiah, you’re the prophet of GOD. You’ve got the best mouth in town. No, no, no. YOU see, this is the heart of prayer. The foundation of all prayer is this: I don’t deserve anything. It’s the pounding the breast again, “GOD, be merciful to me, a sinner.” I have sinned. I have committed iniquity. I have done wickedly. I have rebelled. I have turned aside. I have not listened to the prophets. I have not been faithful to the truth. It even says in v.7, “To us belongs open shame.” Actually the word is the confusion of face, a distorted face that comes to one who’s under shame & distorts his face. Shame of the heart distorts the face.

No matter who these Jews were, they’ve been driven out of their land. The proud Jews were now refugees with distorted faces, bearing the shame of their iniquities, & curses had fallen on them. v.s 11 & 12 take you back to Deuteronomy 28, the curses that GOD pronounced originally when they arrived in the land. And HE said, “If you don’t obey ME, you’re going to be cursed.” And they had been & a great evil, a calamity, a terrible thing had happened as the righteous judgment of GOD fell & that was their being carried into captivity. All our prayers need to be built on this concept of confession & knowing that we’re worthy of nothing. Oh GOD, I don’t deserve anything. I’m a sinner. I’m a rebel. I just ask YOU to fulfill YOUR purpose. Fulfill YOUR plan. Do what YOU promised to do. Restore YOUR people. I’m interceding on their behalf. We pray for the salvation of sinners. We pray for the sanctification of the saints. We pray that the truth may prevail in the Church. We pray that the Church may be purified. We pray for all the needs of people around us. But we’re overwhelmingly aware of the fact that we don’t do anything to earn an answer. It’s all mercy. It’s all grace.

And another thing that’s important about prayer, & now we’re getting to the heart of it. Prayer is generated by GOD’s Word, grounded in GOD’s will, characterized by fervency. It is identified with GOD’s people. It is built on confession. And here is a critical key, it is dependent on GOD’s character – it is dependent on GOD’s character. YOU say, what in the world would make me think I had a right to go to this GOD? Go back to v.4, “I prayed to the LORD my GOD & confessed & this is what I said, ‘Alas, O LORD” – alas, O LORD – “the great & awesome GOD” – now that might keep us away. That’s transcendence. But – “the GOD who keeps HIS covenant & lovingkindness for those who love HIM & keep HIS commandments.” That’s eminence. GOD is both transcendent & eminent. And down in v.7 he says, “Righteousness belongs to Thee, O LORD.” OUR GOD is great, awesome, & righteous or holy.

Down in v.9, however he says, “To our GOD belong compassion & forgiveness.” Yes He’s great. Yes He’s awesome. Yes He’s holy. But He’s also a faithful GOD who keeps HIS promise, a GOD of lovingkindness, a GOD of compassion, & a GOD of forgiveness. He’s a Savior, v.15, “OUR GOD brought us out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand & made a name for HIMSELF.”So we go to our great & our awesome & our holy GOD knowing that HE is also a GOD of lovingkindness; HE is a GOD of compassion; He’s a GOD of forgiveness; He’s a GOD who saves. And we ask. We ask what is consistent with HIS WORD & HIS will. We ask fervently, & we embrace HIS people in the asking & even the lost as we plead for HIS mercy on their behalf.

There’s one final element & we end. The purpose of prayer is GOD’s glory. We could say it consummates in GOD’s glory. v. 16, here’s the ending. “O LORD, in accordance with all YOUR righteous acts, let now YOUR anger & wrath turn away from YOUR city Jerusalem, YOUR holy mountain. For because of our sins & the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem & Thy people have become a reproach to all around us.” He’s saying, GOD, now that’s enough. Turn away YOUR wrath. Turn away YOUR anger. “And so now, our GOD,” v.17, “listen to the prayer of Thy servant & to his supplication” – & here it comes – “& for Thy sake, O LORD, let Thy face shine on Thy desolate sanctuary.” The point he says is GOD, we’re not asking for our sake. We’re asking for YOUR sake. The glory of GOD is the consummation of all prayer. Whatever glorifies YOU. Whatever glorifies YOU. GOD, do YOU understand what’s going on? Do YOU understand what the people & the nations think about YOU? YOU are a GOD, the GOD of Israel. YOU couldn’t protect YOUR people. YOUR people’s city was destroyed. THEIR temple was destroyed. THEIR sanctuary was destroyed. THEIR land is desolate. THEY have been hauled off into captivity. GOD, that’s not good for YOUR reputation. GOD, hear this prayer, answer this prayer, & YOU promised to restore YOUR people. YOUR WORD is at stake. YOUR name is at stake. YOUR reputation is at stake.

In v.18, “O my GOD, incline YOUR ear & hear. Open YOUR eyes & see our desolations in the city which is called by Thy name. We’re not presenting our supplications before Thee on account of any merits of our own.” We dealt with that in the confession section – “but on account of Thy great compassion” – here it comes – “O LORD, hear. O LORD, forgive. O LORD, listen. O LORD, take action” – because we deserve it. No. “Do it for YOUR own sake, O my GOD. Don’t delay, because YOUR city & YOUR people are called by YOUR name.” YOUR reputation is at stake. Pray for the Church & say, O GOD, purify YOUR Church. It bears YOUR name – it bears YOUR name. Here is the true man of prayer. HIS one consuming passion & that is the glory of GOD. Bow with me in just a moment of prayer.

This is convicting. I have been convicted by this truth & I know you have. And I don’t know in each case how GOD has driven this into your hearts, but we all fall short in the area of prayer. Some of you don’t know CHRIST. YOU have no access to GOD whatsoever in prayer. Some of you know HIM but you have been indifferent in your prayer life. YOU have not been fervently consumed with HIS purposes & HIS causes. It’s time for you to reassess your life. Some of you desire to join our Church. Some of you desire to be baptized. YOU haven’t been obedient in that. Whatever is on your heart, we’d love to help you & after the final prayer, the prayer room in the front to my right will be open. There will be men & women there to talk with you & pray with you. YOU come if we can help you in any of these matters or any other.

And now, LORD, as we bring this wonderful time to a conclusion, we all feel the w8 of this conviction. Daniel is a man as we would like to be, but confessedly we are not. Renew in us, LORD, this kind of passion for YOUR holy name & YOUR purposes. And make us a people of prayer. And may we remember how the story ended, that even while Daniel was praying, it says in v.20, while he was confessing, Gabriel showed up with YOUR answer. How thrilling to know that when we pray this way, we can be assured the answer is already on the way. Be glorified in our prayers & in our lives & we’ll thank YOU in YOUR Son’s name. Amen.

0.2 THE SKY MAY BE THE LIMIT, BUT WHO’S PAYING FOR THE GAS?

First and foremost I will point out that the barriers to learning and applying that which one has learned are not at all unique to magic nor are they unique to the different traditions which apply them (i.e. British Traditional Witchcraft, Thelema, Hermeticism, etc.). The notion that if one wishes to learn and apply specific talents or skills in modern society will almost certainly not be free of cost is something most of us can acknowledge based on the fact that, despite where people fall on the income scales, cost is something we collectively experience.

Here is a list of the costs that, in my experience, are common to the practice of magic followed by descriptions for each:

Monetary Costs

The Knowledge - Despite the numerous resources on magic that are available in the modern age, very little of it is in any sense truly “free.” Whether one looks to their local library, the internet, books, or the practitioners of magic themselves, there are certainly monetary costs involved, regardless of if the person interested is paying out of pocket or not.

Public libraries need physical books which take up physical space which requires maintenance (both books and the structure that houses them), the employment of support staff, and utilities (such as heat, water, electric, etc.). All of these factors rely on monetary funds.

The internet has monetary costs as well. From having the internet set up in one’s own home, to the free Wi-fi available at my local Starbucks, all the way to the devices we use to access or support the internet, it all costs someone something. Another cost to be aware of when it comes to the internet, its infrastructure, and the technologies which encircle it is the environmental impacts which also translate to cost. Computers, mobile phones (smart or not), tablets, and the servers which house the world wide web, all contain parts which come from the planet such as rare metals and minerals, and if carelessly discarded can be toxic to our environments as well.

Books can be costly both for authors, their publishers, and their readership.

Some common costs for authors include but are not limited to such things as the research of physical resources on subjects of interest, travel costs related to subjects of interest, the cost of the time the author puts into the book, and the costs which can be involved due to the author’s emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being.

Publishers need to print the material, which depending on the word count, local, regional, and other governmental laws, supply considerations (such as availability, and environmental and social considerations pertaining to how eco-friendly the materials being used are as well as where said materials are coming from and who is supplying the labor), conscripting one or more artists to design the cover and/or create any custom images (artwork, diagrams, etc.) for the work, editorial staffing, marketing, and numerous other factors, can be costly.

From traveling to your local bookseller or ordering a copy off a website, readers tend to pick up the aforementioned costs of both author and publisher. Other factors that have an impact on how much a reader will pay for a book are things such as popularity, regional availability (do you have to import the book?) of the book, how old the book is (is the title still in print?), method of transporting the book (either shipping it to your doorstep, or picking it up locally), taxes, fees, and the time involved.

Magical Practitioners can stack up quite a bit of costs as well. There can be many reasons as to why one who devotes oneself to the study and practice of magic seemingly spends a great deal to do so. As stated throughout the paragraphs above, learning can be costly. Most of those who have experienced some form or forms of basic schooling (like math, science, art, and language [reading, writing, and speaking]) would be able to acknowledge that there is just so much to learn, know, and practice, that it can be frustratingly daunting. Magic in theory and practice is no different. The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle put it far more eloquently when he said, “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.” Magical Practitioners incur more costs than just that of the price to be in the know. Some common examples to point to are the tools used to perform magic in most traditional magic systems, and the travel costs that one may incur by being formally trained and initiated in such traditions.

Magical tools, whether homemade or purchased, can range from dollars and cents to a thousand dollars or even more for just a single tool. The most relevant reason for magical tools being either costly or inexpensive is availability. The convenience of shopping online in modern times is well known, websites such as Amazon.com, for instance, have become the modern day equivalent of what the Sears Roebuck and Co. When I was in the process of learning a system of magic known as British Traditional Witchcraft, there was an expectation that the seekers (common term for aspiring students) would bring something appetizing to share with everyone (not to mention it was 60 mile to and from, and I do not drive!).

Now all of this might not seem like a big deal to some, but allow me to explain why it is. The fact of the matter is there are a great deal of people in my state (and probably yours as well) that are having a hard time affording basic needs, much less a career in magic.

The fact of the matter is that having little to no money to throw at our interests just down-right makes life hard to cope with. That so many people are in this situation speaks to the current socio-political climate in the United States as of 2018. If you are poor in today’s society, life sucks really hard.

What does one do when everything is seemingly expensive when it come to learning magic? Well, first off, (please?) purchase this book, and secondly, the truth is that you don’t need to have an unlimited source of money to perform magic! All one should need for the purposes of this book are the book itself, time, and something to write and draw with (pen and paper, cellular phone, computer, etc.). That’s all there is to it. All of the exercises in this book will require no more than that. But why then, did I go through a long list of things that will cost you money? The simplest answer I can give is that I want my readers to be armed with the knowledge to make a rational and informed decision as to whether or not the subject matter of this book will be up their alley.

ATLANTA — US health officials announced Friday that they are now aware of at least 450 possible cases of severe lung disease that could be caused by vaping. These cases, which have occurred in 33 states and one jurisdiction, include some cases that are still under investigation by state health officials.

A third confirmed death was also revealed in Indiana, and a fourth remains under investigation as a possible case. Two deaths — one in Illinois and one in Oregon — had been previously reported. Two other health departments announced similar deaths on Sept. 6.

Minnesota health officials announced a death in their state of someone over 65, who had a history of underlying lung disease, and who passed away in August. The patient had a “long and complicated hospitalization” that involved “a severe lung injury that progressed to include other conditions,” according to the statement.

After the patient died, investigators linked the lung injury to “vaping illicit THC products.”

Another potential vaping-related death was also reported in Los Angeles County, according to an announcement by the LA County Department of Public Health.

CNN has reached out to CDC to confirm whether either of these cases was the fourth death under investigation.

‘People should consider not using e-cigarette products’

The CDC, FDA and state health departments say they’re working together to figure out which products might have been used and to facilitate laboratory testing. Health officials say they haven’t found a definitive cause or a clear connection between cases, but some are zeroing in on potential clues.

“We believe that a chemical exposure is likely associated with these illnesses,” Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman, CDC’s incident manager for the response to the outbreak, told reporters Friday.

“At this time, no one device, product or substance has been linked to all cases,” she added, “and continued investigation is needed to better understand if a true relationship exists between any specific product or substance and the illnesses we are observing in patients.”

The CDC, based in Atlanta, and various state health departments have reported widespread use of products containing THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive substance in cannabis.

On Thursday, New York health officials said their investigation had found “very high levels” of the chemical vitamin E acetate in nearly all cannabis-containing vaping products that were analyzed. The chemical is now “a key focus” of the department’s investigation into the illnesses.

Mitch Zeller, the director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, told reporters that “no one substance or compound, including vitamin E acetate, has been identified in all of the samples tested.” The agency has so far received more than 120 samples showing a “mix of results,” he said.

“It’s important to emphasize that identifying any compounds that are present in the samples will ultimately just turn out to be one piece of the puzzle that will not necessarily answer questions about causality,” cautioned Zeller, who encouraged anyone who has had unexpected health or product issues from vaping to notify the FDA through its online safety reporting portal.

Doctors also think it’s possible that mixing a variety of ingredients in vapes could result in the creation of new toxic agents.

Meaney-Delman warned users Friday not to buy e-cigarette products off the street or modify them in any way. She added the primary way to prevent these illness is to not vape at all.

“Most importantly, while this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products,” she said.

New reports emerge

In a preliminary report published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine, health officials from Illinois and Wisconsin gave a breakdown of the first 53 cases in their states: 83% were male, with a median age of 19, and 94% had been hospitalized. More than half landed in the ICU, and roughly a third needed intubation and mechanical support to breathe.

Despite the patients being “generally young and healthy,” nearly all experienced respiratory symptoms like shortness of breath, 81% had gastrointestinal symptoms, and all had general symptoms such as fever, fatigue or weight loss.

The vast majority — 84% — had used products containing THC, though “a wide variety of products and devices was reported,” said the authors.

In another report published in the same journal, doctors said they found different imaging patterns on lung scans — which could suggest “different mechanisms of injury.”

One of these patterns was lipoid pneumonia, which was the focus of yet another report published Friday regarding the “outbreak” in North Carolina.

“It can occur when either oils or lipid-containing substances enter the lungs,” explained one of the authors of that report, Dr. Daniel Fox, a pulmonary and critical care physician at WakeMed Health and Hospitals in North Carolina. “It is a rare diagnosis.”

According to his report, one possible explanation for why five patients developed lipoid pneumonia was that aerosolized oils deposited in their airways, causing local inflammation that impaired their lung function. Case reports from previous years have linked vaping to lipoid pneumonia, as well.

Meaney-Delman cautioned that it’s unclear whether these lipids came from e-cigarettes, somewhere inside the body or some other source. “It’s too early to know” whether such findings, also described by doctors at University of Utah Health Friday, will provide a key clue to the investigation, she said.

Experts say the prevalence of lung disease potentially attributable to vaping could be much larger, as doctors may not pick up on some of the milder cases.

“These cases may be some of the most severe, and the full spectrum of illness may be broader,” she said.

Call for e-cigarette regulation

After news of additional deaths spread on Friday, US Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin called on FDA Acting Commissioner Dr. Ned Sharpless to take action on regulating e-cigarettes and flavors in the next 10 days. Durbin said he would call for Sharpless’ resignation if he did not take action.

“As Acting Commissioner of the FDA, you alone have the power to stop this vaping epidemic, which has now reached the point where children and young adults are getting sick and dying,” Durbin said in a statement. “If you continue to refuse to do your job — which is to protect the public health — then it is time to allow someone else to take the helm.”

CNN has reached out to the FDA for a response.

This week, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the state would ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes in brick-and-mortar stores and online sales. The ban gives sellers 30 days to comply and lasts six months — though the governor can decide to renew it.

Citing these products’ appeal to kids, Whitmer also ordered the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to “ban misleading marketing of vaping products, including the use of terms like ‘clean,’ ‘safe,’ and ‘healthy’ that perpetuate beliefs that these products are harmless,” the announcement said.

Flavors are at the center of the regulatory debate on e-cigarettes: Some say they’re an important tool in getting adults to switch from combustible cigarettes, while others want to ban them entirely because they appeal to kids and minimize how harmful and addictive vapes are perceived to be.

In June, San Francisco’s board of supervisors unanimously voted to make the city the first in the US to effectively ban e-cigarette sales. 1x vs. 10x: The Little-Known Reason Why Your Campaigns are Failing

A/B testing works… some of the time.

Barely. A tiny bit. If you’re lucky.

That’s a problem. Because how much time did that 1% cost you? How much effort did you exert chasing it?

All that time and effort, largely wasted, when you should have been ignoring the 1% increases and focusing on the 10% ones like these instead. Or leveraging your time 1x instead of 10x.

If you’ve got a big staff and a big budget, 1% might cut it. But not for everyone else. Not for you or me.

We need more. Way more. And doing ‘more of the same’ will only get you more of the same.

Here’s why. And how to fix it.

Why a ‘Middle Class Mindset’ is Sabotaging Your Marketing

Most experts agree that there’s one critical difference between rich people and poor people.

It’s not inheritance. (Thanks for nothing, mom and dad.)

It’s not the stock market. (Because that’s glorified gambling.)

And it’s not real estate. (Because it can be a cost suck instead of an investment.)

It’s your mindset.

Corny, right? Like some new-age, hippy, The Secret thing.

But there’s some truth to it. Here’s why.

“The first thing you have to do is decide to become a millionaire, multimillionaire, or billionaire if you want. … Then you must reinforce that decision, over and over,” according to a CNBC paraphrasing of sales expert Grant Cardone.

Grant is the author of The 10X Rule, which basically says most of our problems stem from the fact that we’re thinking (and therefore acting) too small. And too infrequently.

It’s not so much the pie-in-the-sky ideals. But the mental exercise that forces your daily activities to change course in order to meet a new ‘standard’.

Keith Cameron Smith, a personal finance author, spent two years working closely with ultra-rich people and noticed a similar distinction. According to the same CNBC article:

“The biggest difference Smith observes between millionaires and the middle class is how they frame their circumstances and present information to themselves. While millionaires ask themselves empowering questions, the middle class tend to lean toward disempowering ones.”

He goes on to clarify, “Empowering questions cause you to reach for your full potential. The questions you ask yourself determine the results you get in life.”

And then brings it home with, “Millionaires are more creative than reactive.”

Author Steven Siebold equates this to a difference in worldview. A different understanding of the work ‘risk’. One group is playing offense while the other plays defense.

“Step out of your comfort zone. Look at all your options. You will have to be at least a little uncomfortable if you want to become rich. You might even have to fail and that’s great, because if you’re not failing, you’re not doing much.”

That warm and fuzzy ‘mindset’ difference is typically referred to as a middle class mindset. One that’s full of limitations and self doubts and ‘invisible scripts’ as Ramit Sethi calls them.

One classic? The “stop buying $4 lattes and avocado toasts to get rich” example. The problem with this one, though, is basic match.

Here’s Ramit running the numbers:

“No amount of saving avocados is getting you a house. The median price of houses listed in America is $245,000. (Laughable, since the median price of an apartment in NYC is over $2 million, but just go with it.) If you want a 20% down payment on that $245,000 house, you’ll need to cut back on 2,578 avocado toasts. At one $19 toast per week, that would take you 49 years to save a 20% down payment.”

I don’t know about you, but I sure as hell don’t have 49 years. Hell — we work in technology. Most of us will have a heart attack by then.

The ‘middle class mindset’ is like the story of Icarus. Fly too close to the sun and you’ll get burned. Instead, keep plugging away at what you’re comfortable with. What comes easy. That way, you won’t miss Happy Hour on Friday.

You might be pessimistic right now. You might claim that these cited gurus are all trying to ‘sell you the dream’ so that they can literally sell you the dream.

You’d have a point. And you’d also be missing the point.

Because this same illusive ‘mindset’ phenomena applies to marketing as well. Even Seth Godin weighs in:

“The 10x marketer understands that the job isn’t to do marketing the way the person before you did it, or the way your boss asked you to do it. Strategic marketing comes from questioning the tactics, understanding who you are seeking to change and being willing to re-imagine the story your organization tells. Don’t play the game, change the game.”

The point here is that plugging away at tiny tactics — the ones that make a 1% difference instead of 10% difference — keeps you from doing the work the matters. The work that moves the needle.

And it’ll keep you firmly positioned in the (marketing) poorhouse.

I’ve personally seen this in my own work. Most of my failures (and there are LOTS to choose from) are the direct result of wasting too many hours chasing 1% improvements. When I should have been focusing on 10x ones.

That’s like tweeting once or twice a day. Not enough to ever break through the noise.

“Topically relevant” content outperforms content that doesn’t cover the topic in-depth.

And longer content performs better in Google (average first page results average 1,890 words.

So. You want results? You want 10x the benefits in new backlinks, traffic, and sales?

It’s gonna require 10x the work.

Just the simple act of blogging today demands it. A single blog post might take all day to write.

Or longer.

Want to write about increasing traffic? You better first do the amazing client work, then create processes to repeat it, then create custom graphics and videos to better explain that process to new people.

Want to write about hosting companies? You better sign up for each one, put up test websites, and monitor their performance for months before writing that review.

In other words, what’s the point of publishing a few random, ad-hoc 500 word posts when only excellence is rewarded?

Answer: there isn’t any.

Which is why you need to avoid 1x marketing ideas at all costs.

1. Aim for 10x Quality

Last year, Unbounce published an epic Presidential Teardown of the two candidates campaigns (from a conversion standpoint), written by my writing man crush Aaron Orendorff (I mean that in a purely platonic way of course).

The goal was to treat it — this single blog post — like a stand-alone campaign.

Typically Unbounce will see anywhere between 500-800 new visits on a blog post. But this one? 4,513.

It’s been shared over 6,000 times. And been picked up by both Inc. and the Huffington Post (HuffPo, or whatever stupid name they’re going by these days).

Not bad, right?

The post was also over 6,000 words long. It tooks hours and hours and hours of research. They looped in influencers from the very beginning. Created a custom PDF for it. And even designed custom blog assets to fit the theme of the page.

Not to mention a well-thought out, strategic distribution plan once the post went live.

In other words, this massive runaway success was no accident. It was created to be the single best resource on this topic. It was 10x from the get-go.

The problem, of course, is that producing something like this is insanely resource-intensive. Super time consuming. Not to mention, expensive when you consider the number of people all working together to make it a reality.

In other words, before you’re able to feasibly move forward on something this ambitious, you gotta free yourself up by cutting back in other areas.

2. 80/20 Your Own Activities

Recently I had the privilege to interview Ty Magnin of Appcues with Brian Sun of Autopilot.

A recurring theme that kept popping up throughout his work and life was “fewer things done better.”

So he’d work on campaigns for weeks or months. Only to kill them off because the work wasn’t up to his admittedly high quality standards.

Their email newsletter was a perfect example. Initially, it was a long-ish email that contained a bunch of curated links and even a joke.

But Ty wasn’t impressed with his own curation of the posts. He thought it was “a little weak.” It wasn’t excellent or best-in-class.

So he killed it off, instead switching their emails up to a simple text-only email when new blog posts went live.

It’s not like the original email sucked or anything. But from Ty’s vantage point, it was merely average. And average isn’t good enough.

This change in format gave him back a few hours a week to devote to making something else excellent.

This is a point driven home by Perry Marshall’s 80/20 Sales and Marketing.

Ya’ll know the drill. You know how this works.

He asserts that there’s an “extreme inequality” is most things. Like your expenses, product defects, profitable customers, and of course, your marketing and sales activities.

The goal is to figure out which 20% of your day delivers the 80% of backlinks, traffic, signups, and purchases. Then continually exploit it.

By creating processes.

3. Think Processes. Not One-Offs

Doing 10x, one-time, is good. You’ll see the benefit. But then the results will tail off. Revenue or traffic will regress to the mean.

The only way to steer the ship forward is by putting plans into place to carry out that same level of output again and again and again.

But in order to do that, we just learned you gotta give something up. Like ditching hacks in order to chase scale.

We’ve also just seen that the ‘content quality bar’ is rising. Therefore, the time it takes to replicate is also rising.

Which means you need to figure out a way to constantly refine your ‘content creation process’ in order to (1) continually increase the quality while somehow also (2) decreasing the time it takes to produce it.

Impossible? Perhaps. If you’re still stuck on 1% improvements.

But let’s imagine:

If you had to do 2,000+ word posts daily (or longer), what would that require? What would need to change or happen in order to make that a reality?

You’d start by finding awesome resources and creating cheat sheets for yourself to save time on coming up with little, mundane things like a headline.

You’d have to figure out workflows in advance, for how a piece of content transitioned from idea, to:

Research

Prep

Writing

Editing

Production

Publish

Promotion

At each step along the way, you’d have to drill down with checklists so that each ‘task’ took the least amount of time possible. No matter how minute.

That way, you could enlist more people to help and free yourself up to focus on where you excel within the process.

Then your content production could look like a well-oiled machine, moving seamlessly from one step to the next. Pre-loaded with instructions, due dates, and responsibility assignments along the way.

In other words, you’d have to start by changing your mindset. Start by changing the way you think about how success flows.

Which would then force you to change the amount of work and effort and attention and output needed in order to make it happen.

Conclusion

Too often, we’re sold a party line.

We spend our whole lives learning to follow instructions. When instructions are only good enough to give you average. What worked before. Historically. In the past.

The stuff that gets you a 1% improvement over what you’ve been doing.

But if you’ve ever started anything new — no matter if it’s a project or a post or a position or a company — you’ll quickly realize that 1% is never good enough. You need 100x to make a dent.

The trick is to start out searching for the BIG improvements. Not because you’re self-deluded. But because it will require a BIG change in the stuff you’ll need to do in order to hit that lofty goal.

You’ll have to dissect and rearrange and reorient what’s possible in order to bring it into fruition.

Then, even if you fall short, you’ll still be miles ahead of 1% in the long run.

At each step along the way, you’d have to drill down with checklists so that each ‘task’ took the least amount of time possible. No matter how minute.

That way, you could enlist more people to help and free yourself up to focus on where you excel within the process.

Then your content production could look like a well-oiled machine, moving seamlessly from one step to the next. Pre-loaded with instructions, due dates, and responsibility assignments along the way.

In other words, you’d have to start by changing your mindset. Start by changing the way you think about how success flows.

Which would then force you to change the amount of work and effort and attention and output needed in order to make it happen.

Conclusion

Too often, we’re sold a party line.

We spend our whole lives learning to follow instructions. When instructions are only good enough to give you average. What worked before. Historically. In the past.

The stuff that gets you a 1% improvement over what you’ve been doing.

You’ll have to dissect and rearrange and reorient what’s possible in order to bring it into fruition.

1x vs. 10x: The Little-Known Reason Why Your Campaigns are Failing

A/B testing works… some of the time.

Barely. A tiny bit. If you’re lucky.

And when it does, a 1% increase to show to bosses and clients is what you’ll get.

That’s a problem. Because how much time did that 1% cost you? How much effort did you exert chasing it?

All that time and effort, largely wasted, when you should have been ignoring the 1% increases and focusing on the 10% ones like these instead. Or leveraging your time 1x instead of 10x.

If you’ve got a big staff and a big budget, 1% might cut it. But not for everyone else. Not for you or me.

We need more. Way more. And doing ‘more of the same’ will only get you more of the same.

Here’s why. And how to fix it.

Why a ‘Middle Class Mindset’ is Sabotaging Your Marketing

Most experts agree that there’s one critical difference between rich people and poor people.

It’s not inheritance. (Thanks for nothing, mom and dad.)

It’s not the stock market. (Because that’s glorified gambling.)

And it’s not real estate. (Because it can be a cost suck instead of an investment.)

It’s your mindset.

Corny, right? Like some new-age, hippy, The Secret thing.

But there’s some truth to it. Here’s why.

Grant is the author of The 10X Rule, which basically says most of our problems stem from the fact that we’re thinking (and therefore acting) too small. And too infrequently.

It’s not so much the pie-in-the-sky ideals. But the mental exercise that forces your daily activities to change course in order to meet a new ‘standard’.

Keith Cameron Smith, a personal finance author, spent two years working closely with ultra-rich people and noticed a similar distinction. According to the same CNBC article:

He goes on to clarify, “Empowering questions cause you to reach for your full potential. The questions you ask yourself determine the results you get in life.”

And then brings it home with, “Millionaires are more creative than reactive.”

Author Steven Siebold equates this to a difference in worldview. A different understanding of the work ‘risk’. One group is playing offense while the other plays defense.

One classic? The “stop buying $4 lattes and avocado toasts to get rich” example. The problem with this one, though, is basic match.

Here’s Ramit running the numbers:

I don’t know about you, but I sure as hell don’t have 49 years. Hell — we work in technology. Most of us will have a heart attack by then.

You might be pessimistic right now. You might claim that these cited gurus are all trying to ‘sell you the dream’ so that they can literally sell you the dream.

You’d have a point. And you’d also be missing the point.

Because this same illusive ‘mindset’ phenomena applies to marketing as well. Even Seth Godin weighs in:

The point here is that plugging away at tiny tactics — the ones that make a 1% difference instead of 10% difference — keeps you from doing the work the matters. The work that moves the needle.

And it’ll keep you firmly positioned in the (marketing) poorhouse.

That’s like tweeting once or twice a day. Not enough to ever break through the noise.

Or dashing off 500-1000 word blog posts. Which simply doesn’t cut it anymore.

And yet most (good) marketers know it by name. They’ve read the case studies. Experimented with it at least once or twice. Have read the initial article on the topic.

Look at those numbers. Up-and-to-the-right graphs that would make everyone unanimously agree.

And yet, that success shouldn’t be surprising. Not when you consider a few facts. Here’s Brian again with two key points about how search engines work.

(Yes, I’m laying all of the blame with Brian.)

The number of domains linking to a page (backlinks) correlated with rankings more than any other factor.

“Topically relevant” content outperforms content that doesn’t cover the topic in-depth.

And longer content performs better in Google (average first page results average 1,890 words.

So. You want results? You want 10x the benefits in new backlinks, traffic, and sales?

It’s gonna require 10x the work.

Just the simple act of blogging today demands it. A single blog post might take all day to write.

Or longer.

Want to write about hosting companies? You better sign up for each one, put up test websites, and monitor their performance for months before writing that review.

In other words, what’s the point of publishing a few random, ad-hoc 500 word posts when only excellence is rewarded?

Answer: there isn’t any.

Which is why you need to avoid 1x marketing ideas at all costs.

3 Ways to Avoid 1X, ‘Middle Class Marketing Mindset’ Once and For All

1. Aim for 10x Quality

The goal was to treat it — this single blog post — like a stand-alone campaign.

Typically Unbounce will see anywhere between 500-800 new visits on a blog post. But this one? 4,513.

It’s been shared over 6,000 times. And been picked up by both Inc. and the Huffington Post (HuffPo, or whatever stupid name they’re going by these days).

Not bad, right?

Not to mention a well-thought out, strategic distribution plan once the post went live.

In other words, this massive runaway success was no accident. It was created to be the single best resource on this topic. It was 10x from the get-go.

In other words, before you’re able to feasibly move forward on something this ambitious, you gotta free yourself up by cutting back in other areas.

2. 80/20 Your Own Activities

Recently I had the privilege to interview Ty Magnin of Appcues with Brian Sun of Autopilot.

A recurring theme that kept popping up throughout his work and life was “fewer things done better.”

So he’d work on campaigns for weeks or months. Only to kill them off because the work wasn’t up to his admittedly high quality standards.

Their email newsletter was a perfect example. Initially, it was a long-ish email that contained a bunch of curated links and even a joke.

But Ty wasn’t impressed with his own curation of the posts. He thought it was “a little weak.” It wasn’t excellent or best-in-class.

So he killed it off, instead switching their emails up to a simple text-only email when new blog posts went live.

It’s not like the original email sucked or anything. But from Ty’s vantage point, it was merely average. And average isn’t good enough.

This change in format gave him back a few hours a week to devote to making something else excellent.

This is a point driven home by Perry Marshall’s 80/20 Sales and Marketing.

Ya’ll know the drill. You know how this works.

He asserts that there’s an “extreme inequality” is most things. Like your expenses, product defects, profitable customers, and of course, your marketing and sales activities.

The goal is to figure out which 20% of your day delivers the 80% of backlinks, traffic, signups, and purchases. Then continually exploit it.

By creating processes.

3. Think Processes. Not One-Offs

Doing 10x, one-time, is good. You’ll see the benefit. But then the results will tail off. Revenue or traffic will regress to the mean.

The only way to steer the ship forward is by putting plans into place to carry out that same level of output again and again and again.

But in order to do that, we just learned you gotta give something up. Like ditching hacks in order to chase scale.

We’ve also just seen that the ‘content quality bar’ is rising. Therefore, the time it takes to replicate is also rising.

Impossible? Perhaps. If you’re still stuck on 1% improvements.

But let’s imagine:

If you had to do 2,000+ word posts daily (or longer), what would that require? What would need to change or happen in order to make that a reality?

You’d start by finding awesome resources and creating cheat sheets for yourself to save time on coming up with little, mundane things like a headline.
