No Longer a Twink, Not Yet a Bear (Or, The Plight of the Average Gay)
There’s something inherently demeaning about being described as “average,” even if that isn’t the intent of the term. That’s what’s so distressing about the gay community these days.
Anyone who has ever spent any kind of time on a gay dating app know that one of the first things you’re asked to do is place yourself into one of the multitudes of categories that gays use to describe themselves. If you’re new to the gay community, some of these terms can come off as... strange. “Bear.” “Otter.” “Wolf.” Am I signing up for a dating app or planning a trip to the zoo? Here is the complete list of all of the “tribes” you can ascribe to yourself on the most popular gay “dating” app, Grindr (“dating” is placed in quotes here because “dating” is a very vague term that can mean anything from a one-night stand to a long term relationship): Bear, Clean-Cut, Daddy, Discreet, Geek, Jock, Leather, Otter, Poz, Rugged, Trans, Twink, and Average.
I’m not a bear. Bears are (typically) older men, usually hairy, and often muscular. That sam basic description also applies to Daddies, and Otters are really just younger bears, so both of those categories are also ruled out. I’m not trans, rugged, or HIV-positive (get tested, folks!), so those terms don’t fit. I’ve been out of the closet since I was fifteen, so discreet is out, and I have no great love of sports or harnesses, so I’m neither “jock” nor “leather.” In my younger days, I was a twink, a young and skinny gay with little-to-no body hair, but that was four years and fifty pounds ago. That leaves me with three possible monikers to claim as my own: Clean-Cut, Geek, or the dreaded Average.
Clean-Cut, Geek, and Average are strange terms. They say less about your body type and more about your general state of being. Sure, it’s often possible to glance as someone and label them a “geek,” but those people are often labeled so because of their affinity of wearing anime tees and less so for their weight or hairiness. I have geeky tendencies, but have no all-consuming love for anything that would qualify me as a geek (okay, so maybe I’m a little obsessed with musical theatre, but in the World of Gays, who isn’t?). Clean-cut - what the fuck does that mean? Clean-cut is like the white bread of the gay world. Apparently caring about your appearance and grooming habits is rare enough to qualify you as a complete subset of gayness. I take pride in my hair and my fashion, but honestly some days I just can’t be bothered to give a shit, so I choose not to identify with the clean-cut tribe.
With all other possibilities eliminated, that leaves me with only one choice: average. That’s the catch-all, the miscellaneous category, the Hufflepuff house of the gay world. Average is what you are if you’re not interesting enough to be anything else. I call bullshit. I’m a human being with interests and hobbies and talents and a past and a future, and I refuse to use a term like “average” to label myself. But in the zoological world of homosexuality, it’s label or be labeled, so I stick with average and hope my personality can overpower the moniker.
I find it incredibly ironic that a community that has been discriminated against for so long then turns around and chooses to discriminate within its own ranks. Of course, everybody has a “type.” Some guys like older guys, and some like younger guys. Some like ‘em thin, and some like ‘em with a few extra pounds. If it’s a physical trait, there is somebody somewhere that’s into it. To be quite honest, it’s part of the reason I dye my hair red. Redheads have more personality, or so the thinking goes. We have fiery hair and an attitude to match. I don’t have a body that qualifies me as anything special, but my hair can. It sucks, but it’s the way it is in the world of internet dating, and until LGBT friendly spaces become widespread outside of major metropolitan areas, it probably won’t change.
As much as I despise the term “average,” I’ve made it a point to turn it into my personal badge of honor. In the world of full of bears, twinks, otters, and daddies, I am woefully and overwhelmingly average. And in some ways, that’s what makes me the least average.

And now I gotta take... you... out
Tumblr media
Heel turn into da bad guy.
First off, I wanna give props to all you who have maintained coherent and mature attitudes over the last three days. We rarely have to veer off track here at FDL because in general, this is a very friendly place that can disagree without it turning ugly and the cooler heads that prevailed are a testament to that, and I wanna give y’all your due. Thank you, and never change.
That said, I’ve decided to give the Razor’s Edge to juan and Poznik until the new year. Their accounts will be banned until January 1, and if either man wants to return afterwards they are more than welcomed but that type of behavior isn’t tolerated here and let me tell you why.
One, this isn’t Twitter. This isn’t a platform for you to pop off antisemitic insults, childish nationalistic taunts, or xenophobic, racist, homophobic, or sexist insults. It just isn’t. Go play with all the @FinallyBonera Eastern European trolls on Twits if you want that action. Cuz here we got rules and a certain code of decency which I’m not going to compromise. I always liken this more to a bar that a group of Milan fans that --friends or not-- come to casually chit chat about Milan and Marvel movies. We’ll tolerate a lot of outlandish shit, but if you’re disrupting he flow I’m throwing you out. In general this is a place where the forces that pull us apart outside of this community do not matter, so I’m not really here for it when they do.
Two, this is a global community. It is diverse. Europe, Africa, Canada, Central America, Australia, Asia, India, the Middle East, and unfortunately even Hamilton, Ontario, are all represented. You can bitch and moan about PC culture or whatever, but if you’re a part of a diverse community the P in your C is subjective. The common denominator is respect towards each other’s opinions and backgrounds as really, it would be in real life if we all met. I actually respected juan’s original point. I flipped around some of the vocabulary and understood why he’d take offense. And while it maybe wouldn’t have bothered me if the tables were turned, if someone is offended by what I say and I don’t need to say it, I can respect it. I strongly implore anyone in the future to ask themselves if what is going to be said is actually needed to be said if it errs on the side of offensive. Cuz I’ll be damned if this turns into some incel reddit board on my watch. I don’t wanna blow y’all up, but I’ll do it if I have to.
Finally, this isn’t personal. I don’t wanna ban people. Poz and juan have been outstanding posters here for a very long time, and I’m truly not happy I gotta make them Outsiders (that’s an easter egg). Me, Mike, and Av pride ourselves on not running this site like a similar but different one that doesn’t allow the conversations we have here. You all can have the worst damn opinions about Milan as you want, swear like sailors, talk mad shit, and we’ll still let you in with open arms. This site runs on your energy and we don’t want to muffle that. Just be goddamn cordial is all.
That’s that. I’ll have something Milan related tomorrow.
Until then. Be easy.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maksymalne RRSO wynosi do 774,6%. Przykład reprezentatywny: 1300,00 zł, czas zwrotu 3 m-ce. Prowizja wraz z oprocentowaniem oraz opłatą przygotowawczą: 852,70 zł. Całkowita kwota do spłaty: 2152,70 zł. Rzeczywista Roczna Stopa Oprocentowania (RRSO): 526,5%. W jasny i klarowny sposób opisują obowiązki pożyczkodawców, jakie muszą spełnić, aby móc udzielić pożyczki. Według nich każdy pożyczkodawca przed udzieleniem pożyczki musi zweryfikować zdolność osoby składającej wniosek w bazie danych. Oto najistotniejsze zapisz ustawy o kredycie konsumenckim: Ustawa o Kredycie Konsumenckim z dnia. 12 maja 2011 r. Art. 9. 1. Kredytodawca przed zawarciem umowy o kredyt konsumencki zobowiązany jest do dokonania oceny ryzyka kredytowego konsumenta. 2. U. Nr 81 , poz. 530 , Nr 182 , poz. 1228 i Nr 217 , poz. 1427)
*Otrzymanie pożyczki zależne jest od spełnienia kryteriów pożyczkowych poszczególnych pożyczkodawców. unpopular fact: my mental health issues almost certainly present more of a threat to a partner than an HIV+ person with an undetectable viral load or a trans person. If you don't expect me to launch on a monologue about my psychiatric history with everyone who sends me a friendly message on Grindr but you think it's the responsibility of poz and trans folks to ensure your sexual health, congrats, you're probably a garbage person.

25 Best Online Resources for Sexual Health: Sexual Health Blogs
25 Best Online Resources for Sexual Health: Sexual Health Blogs
This month we’re putting together a master list of the 25 best online resources for sexual health. We’ll highlight people, initiatives and websites that offer some of the best information and personal experience in living with STDs and HIV. Some of these things we have written about before and others are a new highlight. Let’s start by looking at 5 excellent resources for people currently looking to read articles and posts around the web. Here are 5 great blogs about sexual health.
Men’s Health Online
You may know Men’s Health as a magazine for men’s fitness. However, Men’s Health is a great source for information and tips on men’s sexual health. Their website has an entire blog dedicated to men’s sexual health which includes tips for staying safe during sexual activity and how to communicate with your partner about sexual history.
It is hard to overlook the sexual education aspects this website offers. It has one of the largest reader bases of any male health related site and does a great job of supplying those readers with in depth explanations about sexual health. The most surprising aspect of Men’s Health and their sexual health section is the focus on communication. There are not many resources for men that explore this issue. Communication about sexual preference and sexual health history can be a key component to establishing healthy sexual relationships. This site offers a constant flow of tips and experiences to help educate men about the most effective ways to discuss all sexual issues with their partners.
Teen Source
Teen Source is an excellent website with tons of information. They claim to be offer educational resources for teens by teens meaning that all of their articles and blogs are written by peer educators. Launched in 2001 as an online center for teen-friendly sexual and reproductive health information and resources, Teen Source features medically accurate and reliable information about STDs, birth control, healthy relationships, and teen rights to accessing sexual health services.
Their website offers resources for young people to learn how to access certain sexual health services. It also helps youth get linked to other organizations that can help them with other adolescent issues such as dating violence, runaways, activism or bullying. The blog for this site is updated regularly with discussion of new and pressing issues that can offer a great deal of insight into the sexual health problems today’s youth are facing.
Your Sexy Librarian
Your Sexy Librarian is “a weekly blog about sexual health, sexual issues, and other taboo topics written by a journalist working in healthcare.” The author writes in an inclusive, non-judgmental form in order to make the topics discussed more accessible to all people. Most notable to our list is how Your Sexy Librarian is broken into sections that include “Taboo Topics,” “Sexual Discussion,” “Men’s Sexual Health” and “Women’s Sexual Health.” From sexual violence to STD/HIV prevention to HPV vaccination, the blog does not shy away from having the difficult conversations. The information presented is invaluable to anyone looking to learn more about sexual health. The journalistic style makes the posts easy to read and even easier to understand.
It can be difficult finding a place that regularly posts about current sexual health issues. It can be even more difficult finding a place online that openly invites its readers to make comments or ask questions. Your Sexy Librarian encourages these things which helps it to stand out as a valuable resource for women seeking out information on their sexual health. Readers can contact the author through the main website, Facebook or Twitter.
The STD Project
Janelle Marie Pierce (fka Davis) started the STD Project in April of 2012. This coincided with STD Awareness Month. The number one goal of the STD Project seems to be building awareness and spreading correct information about STDs. Pierce herself discusses her own experience with STDs often on her blog. In this way she is helping to reduce the stigma attached to being STD positive.
The online content for this site includes numerous comprehensive articles about STDs, STD guides, fact sheets, Q and A and extensive resource lists for anyone looking for assistance in navigating care for STDs. The STD Project has won many awards for its content and dedication to educating the public on the risks and treatments for STDs as well as helping people learn to live with their diagnosis.
I’m Still Josh
Josh Robbins was an HIV/AIDS advocate before his HIV diagnosis in 2012. Today, Robbins helps to fight stigma and educate the public on the risks of HIV through his social media, Youtube and website blog, I’m Still Josh. He has openly shared his experiences living with HIV on many internet platforms. A video of him telling his full story can be found here.
When Robbins launched his blog about living with HIV in 2012, his website claimed that he wanted to create a place on the internet for “fact-based reportage and highly personal social blogging — in a way that [is] both insightful and utterly engaging” Since then he has continued to offer updated conversations on current HIV topics including treatments, prevention and testing methods. He helps others to share their own experiences. He has been published in many health related magazines and on several websites. Additionally, Josh Robbins has published books titled HIV Won’t Kill Me: Encouragement eBook and Social Media Is Not Prison, So Unlock Yourself: Tips from a Social Media HIV Activist. His body of work has been featured on The Advocate, Human Rights Campaign, Healthline, POZ and a large number of additional publications.
If you are concerned that you may have been exposed to and STD or HIV you should seek medical care right away. STD testing is available to help detect an infection. The earlier an infection is detected the easier it is to treat, and in some cases cure. Untreated infections can lead to more serious, long term health issues.
