Do you think Ratatouille would trigger Carmy because rats in the kitchen freaks him out ooor do you think it would easily become his favourite Disney movie once the girls beg him to watch it on repeat and play little and big chef repetitively?

the only time it would trigger him is teddy loooveeesss it (she really likes the girl with the purple hair I forgot her name collette I think bc she’s mean and in charge and teddy loves her) but willow is really young when they watch it. carmen doesn’t prefer it but doesn’t hate it (it’s better than encanto for the 7 millionth time lol)

neil: the final scene in linguini & remy’s restaurant. he always tears up that remy gets to live his dream and his dad accepts him for it. and “change is nature, dad. the part that we can influence! and it starts when we decide” has him sobbing like a fool

charlie: “one can get too familiar with vegetables, you know!!” AND when remy runs away after linguini releases him. he howls with laughter every single time

todd: when linguini and remy are talking when remy’s on the bridge. linguini is acting like a wackadoo and remy is confused and it makes him giggle. he also likes when linguini accidentally knocks remy off the bridge

meeks: “what do i always say? anyone can cook!” “well, yeah, anyone can, that doesnt mean that anyone should.” he loves the sass

Having just rewatched Ratatouille with my mom, I have a new critique of the movie that I hadn’t thought of until now.

The message of the movie, as repeatedly stated through Gusteau’s motto, is anyone can cook. Yeah, obviously. Remy’s natural talent as a chef and his struggle to succeed in a high class restaurant despite being a rat conveys that message well by pushing it to its extreme.

But what about Collette?

Collette, like Remy, is an outsider in her craft. “Women belong in the kitchen” jokes aside, she goes on a long rant with Linguine (and by extension, Remy) about the hard work she had to put in to succeed as a woman in the culinary world, overcoming the sexism of her peers with nothing but hard work and an abrasive attitude. Notably, she’s the only woman working at Gusteau’s, period. Even the waiters are all men. She’s also clearly talented at what she does, as she’s shown to be just as competent as her peers and drills Linguine/Remy on proper kitchen etiquette.

Throughout the movie though, Remy and Collette butt heads on how to cook/prepare certain dishes. Like, a lot. It’s natural for artists to disagree on the direction of a certain piece, especially when they’re working together, but Remy’s never willing to even entertain the ideas that Collette puts forward. He just instantly dismisses her and sticks to what he wants to do.

While Remy is obviously the main protagonist and therefore the story should be about him overcoming the immeasurable odds stacked against him, I think his stubbornness kind of goes against the message of the movie. Anyone can cook…and those that can need only to listen to their own intuition. Accepting outside influences will only make your dish worse. Remy’s unwillingness to listen to her is made worse by her backstory, given that she’s also had to fight against presumptions against her character (or in this case, her gender) as well.

Even at the end of the movie, where Collette is now working for Remy, she’s never given a chance to suggest her own input on any dish or recipe. She just tells Remy; “You know how [Ego] likes it.” She’s not shown making her own dish, suggesting something to Remy and him approving, nothing that would show that her cooking has just as much value as his.

I just wish there was one little scene where Remy is shown accepting not just Collette’s lectures on proper cooking form and etiquette, but also her suggestion for recipes and ingredients. It makes him much more close minded than he should be. He puts humans up on a pedestal for their ability to create, but doesn’t value those creations when they aren’t exactly what he wants.
