Day 8: H - Holiday.- Conor and Ruth

~December 12, 2007~

The only light showing through the window is soft candle light. Conor swears loudly. He’s beyond late and he’d promised Ruth that he wouldn’t be late for the eighth and final night of Hanukkah. But, his last client meeting had run way over the allotted time. He runs a hand through his hair. I’m so fecked.

He opens the door and hangs his bag on a hook before taking his jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves off. He pulls his wand out of his inside jacket pocket and sticks it into his back pocket. He wipes his hands against his slacks and walks into the living room.

Ruth’s sitting on the couch. She has a mug of hot chocolate and a blanket covering her, along with a novel of some kind. The fireplace is gently illuminating the room, along with the soft candle light from the menorah that had belonged to Conor’s father-in-law, Gabriel. The Christmas tree in the corner of the room also emits a soft light from the colored bulbs wrapped around it. The clock’s bright green numbers read 9:38. Rory must already be in bed, given that his son is a little older than 18 months.

“H-hey,” he says, his voice soft and quiet.

“Hi, love,” Ruth responds, placing her book on the corner table.

“I’m r-r-really s-sorry that I’m late. My last client wanted over a dozen ch-changes done to the blue prints that were almost complete. He had to stay and watch me make all the changes right there and then. It took a lot longer th-than I meant to.”

“Con, love, it’s alright. I’m not mad at you. I know you’ve never been purposefully late. At least not when you’re working.”

“Really? You’re not j-just saying that?”

“Go take a shower. Say goodnight to Rory. I’ll heat up some latkes and make you a ham sandwich.”

“You’re amazing, mo grá. I’ll handle Rory tomorrow morning. I don’t have any meetings until one.”

Ruth smiles as Conor bends down and quickly pecks her lips. He runs a hand through his hair as he straightens up and then winks, or attempts to. Despite being 34, Conor has never quite been able to master winking.

Conor takes a quick shower, changing into green flannel pajama pants and a black and red Ballycastle Bats t-shirt along with a pair of thick gray socks. He places his glasses back on and tucks a small box into his pocket.

He quietly pads into the small nursery next to their bathroom. The room is small and Conor’s attention is solely grabbed by the crib. The baby, no toddler is fast asleep. One of his little hands has a firm grip on Remington, the bear that Conor’s mother had bought when he had been in the hospital as a newborn. Ailis O’Donnell had bought each of her quadruplets their own special plush animal.

“Night, leannán,” Conor whispers, brushing Rory’s dark hair off his forehead, before kissing the toddler’s forehead.

He gently tiptoes out of the nursery, but double checks the baby monitor before closing the door. He quietly walks down the stairs. He meets Ruth in the living room and smiles. She’s placed a plate with a few latkes and a thick ham sandwich on the coffee table. His wife is curled back on the couch with her mug and book.

“Hey, mo grá,” Conor says, dropping himself onto the couch next to her and picking up the plate.

“Hi. Is Rory still asleep?” Ruth asks.

“Yep. He’s clutching Remington.”

“It was very sweet of you to let him have the bear your mum bought you.”

Conor shrugs, his cheeks turning bright red. He ducks his head and keeps eating.

“These latkes are amazing,” he says.

“You say that every year,” Ruth says, smiling widely at him.

“Doesn’t mean it’s not t-true.”

“Thank you. It’s my grandmother’s recipe. It’s like your gingerbread men.”

“Ryan found Grandma’s recipe in one of Granddad’s textbooks. Her recipes for soda bread, barmbrack, and boxty were in there as well. These latkes are as good as her boxty was. Or at l-least as well as I can remember.”

“Maybe next year, we can make boxty as well.”

Conor smiles and places the empty plate back on the table. He pulls out his wand and mutters “scourgify” to clean the plate. He wraps his arms around Ruth and kisses her cheek.

“Happy Hanukkah, mo grá,” Conor whispers, as he pulls out the small, neatly wrapped box. He drops it between them.

“Conor?” Ruth asks.

“Just open it, Ruth.”

“We said no gifts for Hanukkah this year.”

“I know. Please, just open it.”

Ruth sighs but picks up the small box. She gently unwraps it and then opens the box with a gasp. Two silver Trinity knot earrings sit on the velvet pillow. The earrings she had been admiring that one time in Dublin, months ago. With the box still clutched in her hand, she presses her lips fiercely to his. She knocks his glasses aside in her leap to kiss him.
