Getting Into Wild Ice Skating and Nordic Skates

Alaska in the winter time is very special. If you live here, you really do need to take up a winter sport (or three) to enjoy the six months of cold, snow and ice. I enjoy many methods of exploring Alaska landscapes by self-propelled modes of transport. Skis, running shoes, paddles, bikes and skates! Growing up in Ontario, Canada I am no stranger to ice skating (or just skating as we call it). Moving to Anchorage I was re-acquainted with my ice time roots, channeling my inner twelve year old with a hockey stick in my hand, it was like riding a bike. Anchorage has really cool opportunities for ice skating. Right here in the city there are half a dozen places that are maintained by the municipality to ice skate all winter long. From small lakes to a couple of outdoor ovals, this is a great place to get into skating. The municipality drives pickup trucks onto the ice when it is thick enough and Zamboni’s it with a hot mop. Picture a water tank in the bed of a pickup truck and a large mop doing laps around your favorite little lake. Pretty cool! Ice skating with hockey skates is one way to do it. I got a few pairs of second hand skates at Play it Again Sports, gear swaps and Champion's Choice to outfit the family, and we have enjoyed many years of skating. Getting used to the less than perfect conditions of these manicured lakes is a great intro to building your skills, confidence and curiosity to try out some more adventures on ice.

Several years ago I noticed a few people wearing what looked like some sort of fancy free-heeled speed skates on the lakes. Nordic Skates! For those who aren’t familiar with these skates yet, you indeed wear cross country ski boots, and the blades have nordic ski bindings to clip your toes into. Long flat blades, perfect for expanding your horizons on adventurous ice conditions. Some people wear skate skiing cross country ski boots, some wear backcountry cross country ski boots, and others have a hard boot.

Hale got a pair first, and I stared in awe as he gained confidence and speed circling me in my rocker blade hockey skates doing laps around the pond. I was thrilled to be gifted a pair of nordic skates from my former employer Skhoop back in 2017 and get into the sport. Now there is a local gear builder making great (and beautiful) Nordic Skates right here in Anchorage, Alaska! Check out Ermine Skate directly or shop local at retailers Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking and The Hoarding Marmot. I can’t justify buying a replacement pair yet since I got new ones a few years ago, but I am excited that they exist and to refer friends to these awesome skates that are getting great reviews. Maybe when my kids start nordic skating, they can have my “old ones” and I can finally get a pair of Ermine Skates!

Now, it is one thing to go nordic skating on the lakes in Anchorage, when you have the comfort blanket of the municipality driving one-ton trucks with water tanks on the ice, and local ice reports telling you how thick it is. But, what if you want to expand your horizons? Maybe the next step will be to Potter Marsh, where groupthink and seeing a half a dozen families with kids with smiling faces twirling around the ice gives you an idea it’s probably okay. Afterall Potter Marsh is shallow and right by the road system, right?! The next adventure after that you start to hear about is either Portage Lake or the Palmer Hay Flats. I’ve driven all the way to Portage to find that the lake is open water – not skatable, duh! And I’ve driven all the way to Palmer and found different things – miles of pristine river skating on Rabbit Slough, overflow conditions, tracked and rutted out ice, and great biking conditions (leaving the skates in the car). Could I have been better prepared? Where else is there to go? Even if other people are there how will I know it is safe to go? I know from experience, Alaska adventures, and life, that you definitely should not do something and think it is safe “just because other people are doing it.”

This winter is one of those where I have drooled over gorgeous photos of friends skating near Grewingk Glacier and other places, but not knowing how or when to go there, and a failed Rabbit Slough outing where we literally had to bike, since skating was not possible.

How on earth am I supposed to learn more about this sport and advance to the kind of adventures I dream of safely?

Well, I recently learned that Luc Mehl, the wilderness adventurer and professional outdoor educator we have referred to time and again for planning backcountry adventures year-round has recently developed an online course all about Wild Ice! I know that Luc has been safely and successfully returning from epic wild ice adventures for years, with some of those pictures I mentioned dreaming about. He is a certified ice and swiftwater rescue instructor, has traveled over 10,000 miles of remote Alaska by all methods of self-propelled transport, literally wrote The Packrafting Handbook, is an experienced teacher of safety courses in person and online, and his website Things to Luc At has been a primary resource for planning many of our trips to remote Alaska covering everything from inspiration, to route planning and navigation, to best practices and safety.

Why I signed up for his new online course Wild Ice? I want to know more about the equipment I need to add to my quiver, how to use it, and to overall gain confidence to take the next steps in developing my skills to adventure to new places on ice in the backcountry. I am no stranger to the dangers of adventuring in remote wilderness. Add ice, cold water and Alaska winter into the mix, and it definitely makes me want to know more about safety! One day I’ll go skate beside glaciers and ice bergs, but I literally don’t know what the next step is forward from where I am. I am excited to learn more, and to be as safe and confident as possible in what I carefully choose to do next.

WINDOW CLEANING IN HIGH RISES: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Everyone enjoys seeing through windows that have been kept clean. Regular window washing is a crucial part of maintaining both residential and commercial structures. An entire property's first impression might be ruined by dirty windows. The risks of washing high-rise windows are kept to a minimum by clear Regulatory standards and appropriate training. Despite the risks, there are surprisingly few fatalities in this line of work. Being a high-rise window cleaner demands guts as well because the job is physically demanding, comes with many challenges, and necessitates careful planning.

Here Comes The Snow...

December is here and so is the colder weather,  as Canadians we are proud to be from the “True North” but  when the cooler weather hits, we run for the indoors.  As children I remember our parents could hardly get us inside regardless of the weather…they dressed us to stay warm. Why should the kids be the only ones to play in the snow? Working out outdoors can be a fun, safe way to stay healthy for all ages, if done right.   Forget that many gyms closed and that many people are not comfortable going back indoors thanks to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and make outdoor fitness year-round your new approach to staying healthy.  

Think how fresh air and nature can rejuvenate your sole and ward off the winter blues, think of how it can boost your energy levels  and prevent weight gain during the time of year most of us add some extra insulation! I know what you are thinking “BUT IT’S COLD OUT”…why is that we dress our children to play outside and stay warm but we don’t invest in the right clothing as adults to do the same?  No, I’m not saying to come out in a full snow suit with a scarf wrapped around you hardly able to move…that would be overdressing for your workout. But with a little preparation, precaution and a perhaps a small investment in some winter workout attire, it’s definitely possible to keep fit and enjoy working out year round with RightTrack Fitness.  Here are my  tips for when the colder weather hits:

Get the right gear

The most important thing when doing, well, anything outside in colder temps is to make sure you are dressed appropriately. You will want clothes that fit you right for whatever the activity is, and you’ll want to make sure that you’re prepared for the cold air.  

The quickest way to lose body heat is to get wet. Water is an efficient heat conductor and will quickly move heat away from your body to the cold air outside.  Wet fabric next to your skin will give you an unwanted chill.  Let’s face it getting wet will quickly leave you chilled and miserable and when you are cold and wet you will cut your workout short, not to mention you also increase your risk for hypothermia or even worst you increase the chance for getting frostbite. I know that sounds extreme but in extreme weather you need to make sure you are being safe.

I always tell the folks at my classes to consider layers that can be taken off and added back later For our active workouts.  This allows you to more comfortably — and safely — balance rising body temperatures with the cold air temperatures. The layer closest to your skin should be a moisture-wicking material, like lightweight polyester, nylon or polypropylene, to wick away moisture about 50 percent faster than cotton from your skin to the outer layers to evaporate.

Your second layer is the insulating layer, which should be wool or polyester fleece. You also need layers to trap warm air next to your body and keep out the elements like rain, snow, and wind.  The third, outer layer needs to be wind and rain-repellent. Depending on the weather, your outer shell can be a lightweight nylon windbreaker or vest, or a heavyweight, waterproof jacket. Remember the more water-repellent the shell, the less it will allow moisture from the inside (your sweat) to escape, even if you’re wearing the proper base layer.  When exercising in the cold, this third layer should be removed unless it is raining, snowing or very windy. You can always put the top layer back on during rest times outdoors.

Fingers, ears, noses, and toes are affected most by colder temperatures because blood is shunted to the core of the body, leaving less blood, and subsequently less heat, in your hands and feet.  To keep your extremities from freezing, wear a hat or headband. There are caps and winter hats made to help wick away sweat while retaining heat. Likewise, be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands and fingers. If exercising in extreme cold, consider combining gloves and mittens or a liner under your gloves.  Waterproof or water resistant will be important when doing push-ups, planks, and other fun ground exercises!  You can always take off your gloves or mitts and tuck them in a pocket if you get too warm.  All these add-ons should be wool or synthetic, rather than cotton, to help keep sweat off your skin. To block out biting winds, consider keeping your face covered with a running mask or scarf, something that you can easily breath through but that also shields your skin from the elements.

Don’t forget to put on your thick socks to keep your feet warm.  If you find your toes getting particularly chilly, consider the design of your shoes. “Running shoes are designed to let heat escape, but in chilly weather the cold comes right in. Shoe covers, which you can find at a skiing or hiking retailer, can help lock out the cold. You can also visit a specialty running store to try on shoes that are specially designed to withstand the winter elements. Your running shoes should feature: grippy rubber outsoles that mimic the lugs on a mountain bike tire, and a Gore-Tex lining to protect from cold/wet conditions.  For workouts on snowy, icy surfaces, attaching snow or ice spikes to your running shoes will help you maintain traction to reduce the risk of falls but it’s important to stay off pavement if you’re wearing spikes. They’re designed to pierce snow or ice, so on paved surfaces they can impede balance instead.

I remember as a little girl being dressed in my bulky snowsuit and big boots looking and felling like a big marshmallow.  As I was dragging a toboggan up the hill I was so hot and sweaty.  I didn’t dare unzip my jacket or take off a layer for fear of catching a cold.  When I stopped moving, or tipped over from all the bulky layers, it felt like I instantly froze.  

The biggest mistake in dressing for cold weather exercise is overdressing with too many layers and not peeling them off in time. Exercising will warm you up, and you don’t want to get really sweaty in subfreezing temps.  This will put you at risk of everything from dehydration to frostbite.  Start to remove layers as you feel yourself warming.  Keep the layers close by so you can put them back on if you start to feel cold.  When you start your cooldown and stretching start to put layers back on.

Do not forget to have a headlamp or a toque with a built-in headlamp for evening workouts!  Wearable flashlights are great because they improve visibility for you, and those around you, to help prevent missteps and falls.

Drink your water!

That’s right even in the cold weather we need to hydrate while exercising.  The problem is, when we are outdoors in cooler weather, we don’t have the cues of sweat to remind us we are still losing water. In fact, most people associate dehydration with summer heat and humidity but, dehydration also occurs in the winter.  Here are a few ways we dehydrate without realizing it:

We tend to go for longer periods without water.  Did you know that breathing cold and dry air causes the body to lose significant amounts of fluid?

Unlike in the warmer weather, sweat turns into vapor and isn’t directly on our skin, so there is not the excessive perspiration that acts as a visual cue for us to drink.

During cooler weather we feel about 40 percent less thirsty, but the need for water is unchanged regardless of how warm or cold it is outside.

Warm up and Cool Down

No matter the temperature outside, the need for a good warm-up does not change.  In fact, it’s especially important to prep for cold-weather workouts. A dynamic warm-up including low-intensity movements that mimic the exercise you’re about to perform will increase blood flow and temperature in the muscles to help decrease the risk of injuries.

“When exercising in colder temperatures, you’re at increased risk for sprains and strains,” says Debi Pillarella, an Indiana-based personal trainer and spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise. Think of it like stretching a cold rubber band. It easily snaps, right? Warm it up, though, and it becomes more pliable and less likely to fray.

Save the static, bend-and-hold stretches until the end of your workout.  Although the temperature is cold, it’s still important to cool down your body properly. Incorporate static stretching in your cool down to help slow your heart rate and relax your muscles. A static stretch after your workout will improve range of motion and flexibility for future workouts.

Don’t let the children be the only ones to enjoy the outdoors during the winter.  Take back the outdoors this winter by incorporating these tips to have a safe workout outdoors and reap the benefits of the fresh air, calming effects, and fun nature brings during the winter months.  Come out to one of our 3 weekly classes, feel the crunch of the snow under your feet and maybe even do a few snow angels!

Arc’teryx Workshops Invite Consumers to Engage in Upcycling

Canadian outdoor brand Arc’teryx’s series of hands-on workshops shows consumers how they can help their clothing and gear last longer.

The Arc’teryx store on La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles recently doubled as a cut-and-sew facility where pre-owned outerwear such as ski jackets, pants, vests and fleeces were deconstructed and transformed into new items. Alongside the brand’s design team, consumers created belt bags, chalk bags or reimagined garments from reclaimed textile waste.

The event was the first of three public workshops. According to Arc’teryx, the Circular by Design initiative was conceived last year with Nicole McLaughlin, a New York-based designer who specializes in upcycling retail samples and salvaged materials, who now serves as a brand ambassador on the project. The public seminars and upcycling events help consumers see how they can rework the items they already own and learn the basics of at-home tailoring. McLaughlin, who has worked with labels like Calvin Klein, Fila, Puma, Opening Ceremony and Prada on special projects, crafted a number of one-of-a-kind pieces to be auctioned off to support the Lagartijas Climbing Cru, an L.A.-based group of BIPOC climbers.

“As a brand that really commits itself to durability and extending the life of the products, we really firmly believe that we need to keep them out of landfills,” Arc’teryx’s ReBird vice president Dominique Showers, said. Launched last year, the ReBird circularity platform currently allows e-commerce shoppers to purchase a small selection of upcycled outerwear and accessories. Showers wants to expand the number of channels making use of Arc’teryx apparel waste.

While the company re-sells a selection of used product through its Used Gear microsite, it is currently working to develop the infrastructure to facilitate extensive product take-back and refurbishment. “These workshops are opportunities for us to engage with the community, to test and learn, and to figure out how we can actually scale,” she added. One option is an ongoing platform to work with designers like McLaughlin to create unique capsules made from waste-bound goods.

A challenge for the brand—which sells high-performance Gore-Tex jackets and technical gear for climbing, hiking, skiing and snowboarding—is ensuring that used goods stand up to rigorous quality and performance standards. Though attendees took fabric shears to garments that looked to be in “phenomenal condition” at the workshop, Showers said appearances can be deceiving.

Gore-Tex products need to be washed regularly in order to guard against membrane de-lamination, she said. Consumers who miss this step allow dirt and grime to build up. Skipping maintenance causes the layers of fabric to pull apart internally (a condition often invisible to the untrained eye). When that happens, “the jacket is toast,” and it loses its weather-proof qualities. Creating smaller, one-off items like belt bags from these “problem products” enables designers to make use of their undamaged areas, Showers said.

Part of the goal of the workshops, which Arc’teryx said will continue on in other locations, is to encourage shoppers to hold onto products that they believe are beyond-repair. “There’s a waste stream of great material that can become something beyond a jacket or a pair of pants,” McLaughlin said. Working with consumers, “you see this realization taking place in front of your eyes.”

Equipment designer Mike Foley said that in the absence of a full take-back program, Arc’teryx hopes to show consumers “how accessible it really is” to undertake upcycling at home. While repair and reuse may not replace the fast-paced, season-to-season trend cycle, “that doesn’t mean that you can’t play with those existing pieces and make them something current or relevant that you’re excited about.”
