Forming Curved Louvers
Q. My 1933 Ford has a 351 Ford fuel-injected engine. We can’t get a good tune because the inlet air is heated by the radiator, so we want to install a cold air system, drawing cool air through the hood side. Our thought is to add four or five more louvers in the hood side. How can we make louvers similar to the originals?
I talked to Rootlieb, and they can’t do it because they do not have the shorter dies. They also said they laser cut the hood first, and then form the louvers with their dies. Could I make a Bondo die off an existing louver then cut the slots and press the louvers?
Bill Spaulding Via the Internet
A. The louvers on your hood are complicated because they are all curved, and each one is a different length. I have seen the dies that Rootlieb uses, and quite a bit of time has gone into getting them to work perfectly.
It would be possible to “slice and dice” some original hood sides to get your louvers, but the days of finding inexpensive original parts are history. Rootlieb does sell blank panels with the full set of louvers, and you could adapt these to suit your project, but I’m guessing they are fairly expensive.
The louvers need crisp definition at the edges to match the originals, and that rules out using dies made from plastic autobody filler. There are metal-filled epoxy resins that could be used to cast both male and female dies from an original louver, and you could shorten the dies progressively to make the additional louvers you need. You would need to make a cut in the metal first, like Rootlieb does, and this could be done with a narrow abrasive cutoff disc. Then you would need to devise a way to hold the dies and the hood in a press with perfect registration. All of this is possible, but it’s fairly involved, and any misalignment could ruin your hood.
A simpler option is to have the job done on a Pullmax machine. With proper tooling and fixturing, these machines can make louvers of any length, straight or curved. The profile of the louver and the curve at the tip is fixed by the tooling, and I don’t think the standard Pullmax tooling is an exact match for your louvers. You could look at a sample louver made on a Pullmax, and judge whether it’s close enough.
Alternatively, you could hand-form the louvers with simple dies. You could make the female dies from 1/2-inch-thick steel plate. These could be cut with a bandsaw and dialed in with a sander, since all of the cut edges would be perpendicular to the face of the plate. This plate will form the crisp definition at the junction between the curved side of the louver and the flat portion of the hood. The male die could be hand-shaped from a bar of steel or aluminum, perhaps 5/8-inch thick and 2 inches wide. This could be any convenient length, and the nose of this die would be shaped to match the contour of the original louver.
You would cut the slit for the first louver and then clamp the female die to the face of the hood. I would make a duplicate of the female die to go inside of the hood, so the sheetmetal is firmly clamped between two flat plates with alignment pins to keep anything from shifting.
The louver would be formed by hand hammering the male tool against the sheetmetal. You would form the louver progressively, starting on one end, and working steadily toward the other, going down perhaps 1/16 inch with each pass. I recommend making a stop plate, which limits the depth you can hammer the louver. This could be a flat plate of metal fixed below the female die.
After the first louver is made, you would shorten (or remake) the female dies, repeat the sequence for the next louver, and repeat this process for as many louvers as you want.

1931 Ford Roadster Pickup - $12,495.00
1931 Ford Roadster Pickup - Hot Rod This body was originally built as a hot rod in the late 1950’s. The doors have been widened 6 inches and the bed shortened 6 inches. When re-discovered about 5 years ago, only the body, bed and two front wheel well fenders were there. The original hot rod builder had died after taking the hot rod apart to rebuild it. No one knows what happened to the chassis or many of the missing parts, just the body, bed and fenders were found in his garage. The cab rear of the body should be replaced, and Brookville makes the rear cab portion. I had a complete 31 chassis and that is what I used to put the RPU together, all the parts are new, windshield frame, hinges, etc. I added the 32 grille and SS insert when I installed the new engine and trans. I also installed the Rootlieb plain top hood and Dan Fink hood mounting kit. The only thing left to do if you want is to put hydraulic brakes on the car. I do drive the car, when I originally put the car together, I had the speedometer rebuilt and set to “0” it currently shows 5697 miles on it. The new engine, trans new tires and wire wheels have 375 miles om them This is a ready-made driver, not a garage queen, no work to be done just have fun as I have had over the last 5 years and make what changes you desire to your likes. This is a real fun car to drive. This would make a perfect little hot rod for the Race of Gentlemen next year. ENGINE 375miles on engine since install The block in as 1939 (yes 1939) commercial/industrial block Block boiled out, cleaned and magnafluxed Head boiled out, magnafluxed and surfaced Intake and exhaust manifold cleaned and surfaced Rotating assembly balancedCExhaust manifold aluma coated Cylinders honed New hardened valve seats installed with SS valves New valve springs Crankshaft checked and polished Rods checked and glass beaded New pistons and rings New studs New Alum timing gear New crankshaft gear New distributor shaft New Stipe Improved B 330 cam from Cardaddy.com https://www.cardaddy.com/vehicles/vehicle/1931-ford-roadster-pickup-cadillac-michigan-19711605
