Since in my hetalia verse/collection of headcanons or whatever, Romania is genderqueer(he/she prns), ive gotta figure out when HE figured it out.
-cue rant of me talking about my hcs for romania's gender identity
I think he always knew, sort of. Sometimes she coudln't help but feel that something was wrong, and the feelings got stronger as he grew up. I mean, sometimes being a girl felt right, and it still does at times. But sometimes, being a boy felt right too. And other times he felt as if he was something in betweer, or something beyond that. I figure often she'd often "pretend"(yeah later shed find out it wasnt really pretending) to be a boy, since boys got to do all the cool stuff girls didnt get to, and found that he really enjoyed being a boy. Surely that didnt mean anything, right?
Anyway he tried to not think about that too hard, bcs he really was Not ready for that crisis. And it wasn't as if he knew any words he could give to this feeling. Hell, she could barely describe it to herself, how would he even describe it to other people. And it's...he's a daughter and a sister and a lady but he's also a gentleman and a partner and a brother(or sibling) and a dandy and a tomboish girl and a feminine boy and the more he tries to fit in with women or men the worse he feels. And she regularily wears men's clothing (cause it's more convenient for his activities) but he also loves dresses and how he looks in them. I think he uses human names traditionally for girls at times obvs, tho he prefers male and neutral names & nicknames (or simply calling him by his human surname or a nickname of it)
And people are used to it, hes not the first nation to not conform to human's gender roles.
But I think he truly figures it out maybe in the 19th or 20th century. Sort of(only way later does he actually find the words he's been looking for all his life tho). I think over the years she only really tries to explain it to a few select people.
In modern times he's open about it! He just does whatever he wants when she wants with his gender mostly.
Also Hungary × Romania genderqueer solidarity, if they could actually get along lol). I guess genderqueer hostility, then? Also Poland. I forgot about Poland. Ro and Pol would totally be besties.
