Billie had never been on a snowboard before, and if she was being honest, she was a little terrified. But when you, her girlfriend, had suggested spending the weekend in Aspen, she couldn’t say no. You had promised to teach her, swearing that she’d have fun—“once you get over the falling part,” you had added with a teasing grin.
Now, standing at the top of a beginner’s slope, bundled up in a thick black jacket, her beanie pulled low over her forehead, Billie wasn’t sure if this had been such a great idea after all. Her gloved hands clung to your arms, her knees slightly bent as she wobbled on the board.
“You got this, baby,” you reassured her, standing close, hands lightly gripping her waist to steady her. “Just trust the board and your balance.”
Billie huffed, shooting you a glare, but the effect was ruined by the nervous wobble in her stance. “Trust the board? The board wants me dead.”
You bit back a laugh, tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear before adjusting her stance. “No, the board wants you to chill out and go with the flow.” You stepped back slightly, testing if she could hold herself up, and when she managed, a proud smile spread across your face. “There you go! Look at you.”
Billie groaned. “I hate this already.”
“No, you don’t,” you said with a knowing grin. “Because I’m right here with you.”
She sighed dramatically but couldn’t stop the small smile forming on her lips. “Fine. But if I fall, you’re carrying me down.”
“Deal.”
A few fans had already noticed the two of you on the slope, a few pulling out their phones, but Billie was too focused on not face-planting to care. You guided her step by step, teaching her how to shift her weight, how to turn slowly, and how to stop without panicking. The first few attempts were rough—she fell multiple times, the snow cushioning her but still making her yelp in frustration. But every time, you were right there, offering your hand, pulling her up, brushing snow from her jacket, and pressing a kiss to her cheek to soften the blow of defeat.
“You’re doing amazing,” you told her after she managed a smooth glide of a few feet without falling.
She grinned, proud of herself. “I’m basically a pro now.”
“Oh, for sure. Olympics next year.”
Billie laughed, and for a moment, she forgot about her nerves. She reached for you, gripping your jacket, and before you knew it, she had tugged you forward into a kiss—quick but warm, her lips cold from the mountain air, but her smile against yours making your heart race.
That was the moment someone caught on camera.
The video, posted later that evening by a passing fan, went viral within hours. It showed you laughing as Billie nearly toppled over, catching her before she could hit the ground. It showed the way your hands naturally gravitated toward each other, how you guided her, how she looked at you with absolute trust despite her complaints. And most of all, it captured the way she pulled you into that kiss, the snowflakes drifting around you like something out of a romance movie.
The media went wild. Fans gushed over how in love the two of you looked, how patient you were with her, how Billie had never looked so happy.
And when Billie saw the clip later that night, curled up against you by the fireplace in your shared cabin, she simply smirked. “Guess they caught us, huh?”
You kissed her forehead, arms wrapped around her as she nuzzled into your side. “Yeah,” you murmured. “But I don’t mind.”
She tilted her head up to look at you, her green eyes filled with something soft, something that made your chest tighten. “Me neither.”
And with that, she kissed you again, her lips warm despite the winter air outside, despite the snow still melting in her hair.
If this was what snowboarding lessons with you felt like, maybe she didn’t hate it after all.

(Snow Day)
“Honestly Kerry, age has made you boring.” Louise stated as if she wasn’t only ten years younger than Kerry. The exes looked great for their age.
“Okay but, freezing cold snow ooooor skinny dip in the hot tub with Venus…. I like the second one better.” Kerry put his hands on his hips, shrugging.
Louise groaned again, Vax chuckling by the door… until he realized he was about to be left alone with Kerry’s ex wife for an extended amount of time. In a snowy mountain. Where he was completely at her mercy as someone who’s only been in snow a handful of times.
Kim ran up to Vax’s side, taking his hand with a bright smile behind pink goggles. “Don’t worry, I’ll teach you everything you need to know!”
At least his little buddy would be there with him. Ted was staying up in his room, not wanting to be seen out in public with his stepdad that was old enough to basically be his older brother.
The ladies finished getting ready and making sure they had everything for Vax, Kerry watching from the couch. Vax fidgeted by the door, his nerves starting to get the best of him. He was unarmed, and in unfamiliar territory. He was beginning to regret being talked into this. He hated new things, he hated being unprepared. What if they were attacked, what if Kim got hurt, what if they couldn’t reach anyone-
“Hey.” Kerry’s voice dragged him from his thoughts, the hard eye contact grounding him for a moment. “You’re okay. Everything is going to be fine. I wouldn’t send you with them if I didn’t think it was perfectly safe.” Vax usually hated when Kerry talked to him like this. Like he was a wounded animal he was trying to tame.
“I don’t like not being armed. What if something happens?”
“Baby the worst thing that could happen to you guys is if Louise decides to smother you in the snow when Kimmy isn’t looking- I’m joking.” Kerry held his hand out, kissing the golden band on Vax’s ring finger when he had the chance. “You take your meds today?”
Vax nodded. Not that they helped.
“Ready?” Louise blinked when Vax jumped, never seeing the young man so on edge before. “It’ll be okay, I’m not above holding your hands.” Her eyes flicked to her ex husband, who just smiled in return.
“You kids have fun!”
Snow never failed to put Vax in awe. It was a gorgeous and new thing he loved. Kim held his hand the whole way up the mountain, talking his ear off about snowboarding. It was Ted’s preferred snow activity. Louise just smiled at her daughter’s enthusiasm.
“Don’t forget to bend your knees okay? You’ll fall if your too tense.” Louise wasn’t kidding, she had both of Vax’s hands in hers. “You okay?” She asked a bit softer, so Kim didn’t hear.
“Learning new things in unfamiliar environments isn’t exactly my forte… but I’m okay.” Vax offered a small, nervous smile.
“I’m serious, V. Everything is going to be okay. I’m not gonna let you get hurt, if that’s what you’re worried about.” It wasn’t, but she was still sweet to say so. “You seem to really enjoy the snow for someone who grew up in California.” Changing the subject, a good distraction.
“It’s gorgeous. And the cold, my therapist said something about it shocking my nervous system or something that keeps me calm. So I’m always calm. Just. Really don’t like being unarmed.” Vax rambled a bit, squeezing her hands without thinking.
“You aren’t our bodyguard, Vax. You’re family. I know this is easier said then done, but ya gotta relax. Take a deep breath for me.” Vax found himself taking one. “Good… now bend your knees and go.”
…that lady shoved him down a smaller slope. Vax had somehow managed to stay standing, only to fall on his ass at the end and staring up at Louise who was grinning at him as she followed.
“Not bad for a beginner! You stayed up the whole time!”
“That was sneaky.” Vax huffed.
“You weren’t gonna go the easy way. So I did the bird way.” Vax rolled his eyes at her cheeky smile.
By the time they came trudging home, Kerry and Venus were curled up on the couch with cocoa. Vax’s laugh was music to Kerry’s ears, knowing the man was terrified of Louise.
Vac was carrying an exhausted Kimmy in his arms, the sight always warmed the rocker’s heart. Louise and him chatting about something and laughing to each other.
“Have fun?” Venus asked, looking over the couch. They were quickly horrified by the amount of snow on the three. “Oh my god! You’re gonna freeze get in here!”
“Smells good in here.” Louise smiled calmly, winking at Kerry like she had won some unknown contest the two had.
Vax found himself back next to his husband after a warm shower and clothes. Louise was bragging about him being a quick learner and how well he had done… and Kerry didn’t miss the red on his ears as she talked. Maybe in another life that would be possible. Though… Louise would eat him alive.
“He stayed up- thank you, dear- the whole way down.” She explained as Vax handed her a cup of warm hot coffee he had just made.
“You shoved him down a slope?” Kerry asked, exasperated.
“Sometimes, in order for birds to learn to fly they need to be shoved out of the nest.”
“Oh my god…” Kerry rubbed his face. “He’s been through enough, Lou!” His ex wife just cackled.
“I had fun.” Vax spoke up finally, smiling. “Thank you for being patient with me.”
“Oh anytime! We all gotta learn one way or another. You did fantastic.” Louise totally noticed the red spreading from his ears to his cheeks the more she praised him. It was amusing.
“I’m glad you had fun. I told you she wouldn’t kill you.” Kerry smiled, kissing his cheek.
“She almost did.” Vax grinned, trapping him in a kiss on the lips.

@mysteryoflovc - continued from your reply to my open starter HERE!
It was impossible for Noah to stop the slight chuckle that escaped him when he heard the response from the stranger. Letting his snowboard coast him over closer to the male, he asked, "You don't know what you're doing, but you're up here on your own? And early at that, so there's a good chance nobody else is here." He tsked and shook his head before looking the other over, and then at the path he was about to take which, for a beginner, was definitely not the way that he needed to go if he wanted to come out of it safely.
"For starters, this isn't the way you should be going, mate." Without asking permission, he turned the man safely in the right direction. "You'll wanna go down this way. Trust me. If you don't know what you're doing, you're basically going to want to go down the easiest path possible." He looked thoughtful for a moment before adding, "How about this, I'll make you a deal, I'll go down with you, basically, just to make sure you do alright and that way I can keep an eye on you so that you don't hurt yourself on accident." Noah wasn't about to have a serious injury, or a death, on his mountainside on his watch. That would be negative publicity that he absolutely didn't need.

Known for their innovation, durability, and rider-centric designs, Yes Snowboards strike an ideal balance between quality and affordability.
Tumblr media
This guide explores the advantages of choosing Yes Snowboards, where to find them, and what makes them a smart choice for all levels of snowboarding enthusiasts.
Why Choose Yes Snowboards?
Yes Snowboards, founded by a group of pro snowboarders, stand out in an industry crowded with commercial giants. The brand focuses on delivering a rider-first experience, designing boards that respond intuitively to different terrains and skill levels. Whether it’s all-mountain carving, park performance, or backcountry adventures, Yes has tailored options that reflect years of testing and rider feedback.
Their boards are not mass-produced afterthoughts—they are the result of deliberate craftsmanship and innovative shaping. From the asymmetrical profiles to their standout UnderBite and Tapered UnderBite technologies, the riding experience is dynamic and responsive.
What to Look for When Buying a Snowboard
Before making a purchase, especially from a snowboard shop, consider the following factors:
Skill Level: Choose a board suited to your expertise—beginners benefit from forgiving, softer flex boards, while advanced riders might prefer stiffer, more aggressive options.
Riding Style: Are you a park rat, a powder hound, or an all-mountain explorer? Your style determines the right board shape, length, and flex.
Terrain: Local mountain conditions and your preferred terrain play a crucial role in board selection.
Camber Profile: Whether it's camber, rocker, flat, or hybrid, the profile affects grip, control, and float.
A reliable snowboard shop should offer personalized advice, fitting you with the best board based on these factors.
Key Features of Yes Snowboards
What sets Yes Snowboards apart isn’t just brand reputation—it’s the technology behind each model. Some highlights include:
UnderBite Technology: Improves edge hold and turning precision by redistributing pressure to key contact points.
MidBite/Tapered MidBite: Narrow waist width with fuller tips and tails allows quick edge-to-edge transitions without compromising float or stability.
Poplar/Paulownia Cores: Lightweight yet strong, providing a lively ride with durability to match.
Sintered Bases: Found in many models, these bases offer speed and wax retention for serious riders.
These technologies ensure that boards from the Yes Snowboards for Sale range cater to both progression and performance.
Where to Find Yes Snowboards for Sale
While availability can vary seasonally, a growing number of online and brick-and-mortar retailers stock Yes boards. The best strategy is to shop off-season or monitor flash sales during peak buying periods. Key platforms include:
Independent snowboard shop websites that specialize in niche or pro-level equipment.
Outdoor gear retailers offering end-of-season discounts.
Online marketplaces with verified reviews and shipping options.
Always check for authenticity, return policies, and sizing guides to make informed decisions.
FAQs About Yes Snowboards
Are Yes Snowboards suitable for beginners?
Yes. While the brand is often associated with high-performance boards, several models are beginner-friendly, offering soft flex and forgiving control. Look for models like the Yes Basic or Yes Libre for a smooth learning curve.
What size snowboard should I get?
Sizing depends on your weight, height, and riding style. Most snowboard shop websites feature a sizing chart to guide you. Typically, your board should reach somewhere between your chin and nose when stood upright.
Do Yes Snowboards come with a warranty?
Yes. Most Yes Snowboards include a limited manufacturer’s warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship. Always register your board and keep proof of purchase.
Is it better to buy snowboards online or in-store?
Both have their advantages. Online shopping offers convenience and potentially better prices, while visiting a snowboard shop allows for hands-on assessment and expert advice.

Snowboard Lessons in Switzerland: The Ultimate Guide to Learning on the Slopes
Switzerland is globally renowned for its spectacular mountain ranges, offering snow-covered peaks and perfectly groomed slopes that attract winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. Among the various snow activities available, snowboarding stands out as an adrenaline-pumping and skill-enhancing experience.
Whether you’re a beginner eager to try something new or an intermediate rider looking to refine your technique, taking professional lessons can make all the difference. This guide explores everything you need to know about learning to snowboard in Switzerland, including what to expect from lessons, benefits, and additional opportunities to enhance your skills on the snow.
Why Choose Switzerland for Snowboarding?
Switzerland boasts some of the most famous alpine resorts in Europe, including Zermatt, Verbier, St. Moritz, and Davos. These resorts offer exceptional infrastructure, modern lift systems, and well-maintained snowparks. The natural beauty and high-altitude terrain make the country an ideal place to master snowboarding skills in a picturesque and professional setting.
Plus, many instructors in Switzerland are multilingual and certified, ensuring high-quality coaching in a safe environment.
What to Expect from a Snowboard Lesson
When you book a snowboard lesson in Switzerland, you're signing up for more than just a basic skills session. Instructors begin with the fundamentals—like learning how to balance, glide, and stop—before progressing to turns, carving, and handling steeper slopes.
Group sessions typically last a few hours per day and cater to different skill levels, while private lessons allow for personalized instruction and quicker progression. Most lessons include equipment rentals, making it convenient for travelers who don’t own snowboarding gear.
Enhancing Skills with Freestyle Instruction
For those who already have the basics down and want to take their skills to the next level, enrolling in a freestyle ski lesson is a great option. These sessions often focus on terrain park riding, jumps, and tricks. Freestyle training not only improves agility and confidence but also enhances overall slope awareness and control. Although originally designed for skiers, many snowboarding schools offer similar freestyle training modules adapted for boarders.
Tips for Beginners
Before hitting the slopes, beginners should keep a few things in mind:
Dress appropriately: Waterproof outerwear, layered clothing, and protective gear are essential.
Stay hydrated: High altitudes and physical exertion can lead to dehydration, so drink plenty of water.
Start slow: Avoid the temptation to jump into advanced trails before mastering the basics.
Be patient: Snowboarding has a learning curve, but consistent practice and proper instruction will yield results.
The Importance of Professional Instruction
Learning on your own might seem appealing, but professional instruction significantly reduces the risk of injury and frustration. Instructors can identify and correct bad habits early, help you navigate the mountain safely, and ensure you make steady progress.
Many Swiss resorts tailor lessons for families, kids, and even seniors, making snowboarding an inclusive and enjoyable activity for all. With world-class resorts, certified instructors, and diverse terrains, Switzerland provides the perfect environment for winter sports enthusiasts to learn and grow.
Whether you're taking your first glide down a gentle slope or perfecting your tricks in the snowpark, professional training can greatly enhance your skills and enjoyment. For expertly guided experiences that include snowboard lesson Switzerland and freestyle ski lesson opportunities, look no further than Activalpine.

Ghost Boards : Custom Longboards, Skateboards, longboarding
Tumblr media
Longboarding is a thrilling and accessible sport that has captured the hearts of riders around the world. Whether you're looking for a fun way to commute, a smooth ride to relax, or the excitement of downhill racing, longboarding offers a unique and exhilarating experience. However, if you’re a complete beginner longboard , the thought of picking up a longboard for the first time can feel intimidating. Fear not! This beginner’s guide is designed to give you everything you need to know to start your longboarding journey safely, comfortably, and confidently.
What Is Longboarding?
Longboarding is a variation of skateboarding where the board itself is longer than the standard skateboard, typically ranging from 33 to 59 inches in length. The longer length provides increased stability, making it easier to balance and ride at higher speeds, which is ideal for cruising, carving, downhill racing, and even performing tricks. Because of its versatility, longboarding appeals to a wide range of riders, from casual cruisers to competitive racers. Longboards are designed for smooth rides, and they offer a unique combination of freedom, adventure, and fun.
Choosing the Right beginner longboard
One of the first steps in your longboarding journey is choosing the right board. With so many different styles, shapes, and sizes of longboards, it can be overwhelming to make a decision. However, choosing the right board is crucial to ensure a comfortable and safe experience. Here are a few important factors to consider when selecting your first longboard:
Board Type:
Cruiser Longboards: These are the most common and beginner-friendly type of longboard. They are versatile, stable, and easy to ride, making them ideal for daily cruising, short commutes, and getting a feel for longboarding. They typically have a medium flex and a smooth ride.
Carving Longboards: If you want a ride that mimics the feel of surfing or snowboarding, a carving longboard is a good choice. These boards are great for making smooth, flowing turns and are suitable for beginners looking to improve their control and balance.
Downhill Longboards: If you’re looking to ride fast and tackle steep hills, downhill boards are designed for high speeds and maximum stability. While great for experienced riders, a downhill board can also work for beginners who plan to gradually build their skills and confidence.
Deck Shape:
Symmetrical Deck: This shape offers a balanced ride, making it ideal for freestyle riders and beginners who want to practice various tricks.
Directional Deck: These decks are designed to be ridden in one direction, offering greater stability and control at higher speeds, which is great for cruisers or downhill riders.
Drop-Through Deck: This deck style lowers your center of gravity, making it easier to push and control the board. It's perfect for beginners who want a smooth and stable ride.
Material:
Most beginner longboard are made from wood, such as maple or bamboo. Maple offers a sturdy, durable ride, while bamboo provides flexibility and a lighter feel. For those who want a stiffer, more responsive board, composite materials like fiberglass and carbon fiber are also options.
Wheels:
For beginners, soft wheels (around 78A to 87A durometer) are the best choice. These wheels provide a smooth, cushioned ride and help absorb bumps and rough terrain, making them perfect for cruising and learning to balance.
Trucks:
Trucks are the metal parts that connect the wheels to the deck. Beginners should opt for wider trucks (150mm to 180mm) to provide greater stability and smoother turns. Wider trucks allow for more control when carving and cruising, which is ideal for someone just starting.
Basic Skills for beginner longboard
Now that you’ve selected your longboard, it’s time to start learning the basics! Here are the essential skills you’ll need to develop as a beginner:
Mounting the Longboard:
Mounting the longboard is the first challenge for beginners. Start by standing next to the board and placing your front foot on the deck. Push off with your back foot while maintaining balance. Once you get comfortable with this, practice mounting and dismounting smoothly.
Balancing:
One of the most important skills to master is balance. Stand on the board with both feet and gently shift your weight from one foot to the other. Focus on staying relaxed and finding your center of gravity.
Pushing:
To get your longboard moving, you’ll need to push with your back foot while keeping your front foot planted on the deck. Practice pushing in a straight line until you feel comfortable with the motion. As you get more confident, you can start pushing faster.
Turning:
Turning on a longboard is done by leaning into the direction you want to go. Begin by shifting your weight to your toes or heels to make your board turn. The more you practice, the smoother and more controlled your turns will become.
Braking:
As a beginner, it’s crucial to learn how to stop safely. The most common method for beginners is foot braking, where you place your back foot on the ground while keeping your front foot on the board. This will gradually slow you down and bring you to a stop. Always practice braking in a safe, open area until you feel confident.
Safety Tips for Beginners
Safety is essential when learning to longboard, especially if you’re just starting. Here are some tips to ensure you stay safe on your longboard:
Wear Protective Gear:
Always wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards when you’re learning. Protective gear can help reduce the risk of injury if you fall, and it’s especially important as you practice balance and gain confidence.
Start Slow:
Begin with slow rides on smooth, flat surfaces. Avoid trying to ride downhill or at high speeds until you’ve built up your skills. Start in an open, quiet area with plenty of space to practice without distractions.
Check Your Equipment:
Before each ride, check your longboard to ensure everything is secure. Tighten any loose bolts on the trucks and make sure the wheels are in good condition. A well-maintained board will be safer and easier to ride.
Ride in Safe Locations:
Always ride on smooth, quiet paths or empty parking lots to start. Avoid busy streets or areas with heavy traffic. Make sure you have enough space to practice your skills and avoid obstacles.
Conclusion: Start Your Longboarding Adventure with Confidence
Longboarding is an exciting and rewarding activity that offers endless opportunities for fun and freedom. As beginner longboard, it may take time to build your skills, but with patience and practice, you’ll soon be cruising with confidence. By choosing the right longboard, learning the basic skills, and following safety tips, you can enjoy a smooth, thrilling ride. So, grab your board, start practicing, and join the world of longboarding!

Teaching a family friend’s daughter how to ski was a fulfilling experience that challenged my communication skills and patience while reinforcing my own understanding of the sport. Since she was a complete beginner, I had to break down the basics step by step, from maintaining balance to making controlled turns. One of the biggest challenges was helping her overcome her initial fear of falling, so I focused on encouragement and demonstrating techniques in a simple and supportive way. Having skied since I was very young and even participated in competitions, I was able to draw from my own experience to guide her effectively. Although I now snowboard, skiing has been a huge part of my life, and sharing that knowledge with someone else was incredibly rewarding. Seeing her gain confidence and successfully complete her first run reminded me of my own learning process and reinforced the importance of clear guidance and positive reinforcement in any skill.

Service - learning a random snowboarder - 3h - 28.12.2024
On my family ski trip I met a snowboarder that needed some help with snowboarding. I decided to help him. He was a beginner so the challenge was even bigger. Firstly I had to explain him the basic and some safety rules, I also ensured that he was properly equipped. After trust we were ready to go up the ski lift. From the begging everything was a challange and one thing that oftentimes scares beginners is how to get of the ski lift. Fortunately he managed to do everything smoothly because of my explaining. After that we trained by riding down the slope. I teacher him how to balance on the board properly and I showed him some exercises for beginners to get the feeling of the board. Summarizing the lesson went smoothly. After consultation he told me that I was a huge help for Jim’s and that he is very great full.
What I learned/developed:
My teaching skills
Communication - It was crucial for this situation. I used it to teach him how to snowboard.
Planning - I had to plan a lesson that would be reasonable for his skills
Critical thinking - I had to analyze what are the challenges, frightening, risks, etc.

So, it’s winter. The season when we hunker down and try to make it through to brighter and warmer days. Right? Not quite. While snowboarding and skiing have been long heralded as top sports of the season, another activity is quickly gaining traction—even on icy surfaces. The activity in question? Snowshoeing. You heard me. Snowshoeing: the low-frills activity that involves strapping snowshoes to your boots, grabbing some trekking poles, and venturing into a winter wonderland. Arguably a sibling to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing has quickly gained fans across generations, quickly installing it as a popular winter activity for the full family (and drawing those pickleball comparisons). In fact, the intrigue around the sport has grown so much that WGSN, a global leading trend analysis company, called it out as part of their “Soft Adventure” movement, a key trend for 2025. In the description of the trend, WGSN analysts call out that snowshoeing has become the fastest growing outdoor activity in the U.S., participating increasing over 20 percent in 2022, per Outdoor Industry Association. Ahead, learn more from experts about the activity, why it’s on the rise, and how to get started. What is snowshoeing? Snowshoeing can be viewed as hiking, or even trail running, in wintry landscapes. “Snowshoeing is basically hiking on snow,” says Betsy Bothe, Nordic instructor and ski and snowshoe guide at White Pine Touring in Park City, Utah. The activity requires a pair of snowshoes ($170), which are strapped onto waterproof boots to help muster through the elements. Depending on the terrain, you might be advised to use trekking poles ($26), like those in cross-country skiing, which can help with balance and momentum, and provide an upper-body workout, according to Bothe. Once you’re geared up, you can hit the trail by simply stepping into the snow with your snowshoes. “If you can hike, you can snowshoe,” Bothe says. Like hiking, snowshoeing can be done on a variety of terrains. While more experienced participants might want to take their adventure off the beaten path, those who are looking for a more, err, chill(y) experience can easily find opportunities that traverse low-key trails. Why is snowshoeing becoming so popular? Well, a bunch of reasons. From a response to the pandemic to its accessibility, snowshoeing is rife for the picking. “Snowshoeing meets the massive consumer demand we’re seeing for connection with nature through adventure,” says Rory McAllister, sports and outdoor content strategist at WGSN. Perhaps spurred by quarantining during the pandemic, folks are seeking refuge in the great outdoors, which has been proven to bolster mental health. According to the Outdoor Industry Association and its 2023 Annual Outdoor Participation Report, “outdoor recreation participation grew 2.3 percent in 2022,” the eighth consecutive year of growth. Bothe agrees, stating that she’s seen an uptick in participants and that more people got into the snowshoeing during the pandemic and have kept it up since. Further, because snowshoeing is less competitive than snowboarding or skiing, it can appeal to a wider set of participants. McAllister says the activity’s low-barrier entry is also a cause, as it’s less physically demanding for beginners than more adventurous alternatives. “It shares the winter-specific, off-grid appeal of cross-country skiing, but with more affordable equipment, lower physical demands, and a shallower learning curve for beginners, alongside greater convenience and opportunity,” he McAllister says. This means folks of all ages can give the activity a try, underscoring the 2023 Annual Outdoor Participation Report’s findings that seniors are contributing to overall outdoor activity growth. Bothe has observed a similar attitude among resort guests. “Snowshoeing is a great sport for anyone who is interested in getting into the backcountry to see the mountains in the winter. Many of my clients are people who don’t downhill ski, but they are here with family that does ski.
” How to snowshoe for beginners While snowshoeing is relatively accessible, there are a few key components to know before heading out on your first trip. First, be sure to pick up the right gear—this means knowing what sort of snow you’ll likely be hiking through. “The snowshoes distribute your weight so you can float on the higher layer of snow without postholing down deep,” Bothe says. “There are so many different types of snowshoes. Some snowshoes are made for running and others are made for deep powder.” When getting fitted for your first pair of snowshoes—regardless if you plan to buy or rent—consider working with a pro at a local gear shop who’s familiar with the paths, terrain, and snow or ice type you’re bound to encounter to find the best fit. On the day of your snowshoe trip, opt for a pair of waterproof boots ($97)—ideally already broken in—and dress warmly, but for activity, advises Art Myshrall, another snowshoe guide at White Pine Touring. “I like to have layers that make it easy to adjust your clothing to the conditions. Since it's as aerobic as you want to make it, you might want to be able to adjust while you are out,” he says. Keep in mind that cold wind can be vicious, so having some sort of shell or protective coat ($85) is optimal. And, before you head out, give the weather report a look. While Myshrall says many beginner snowshoe trails aren’t in dangerous areas, avalanches can occur and it’s best to be prepared for escape routes and an essential pack containing extra layers, snacks, fluids, and a first aid kit, among other items your guide might advise you to bring. If you’re interested in trying out snowshoeing this winter, there are plenty of trails and resorts to check out. Just be sure to stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the views.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Snowcat Skiing?
At its core, snowcat skiing is an off-piste adventure where skiers are transported up the mountain in a snowcat — a large, tracked vehicle — instead of using a traditional ski lift. This means that snowcat skiing offers access to untouched backcountry slopes and fresh powder, far away from the crowded and groomed runs found at most ski resorts. For skiers and snowboarders looking for a more private and unique experience, snowcat skiing provides a fantastic opportunity to enjoy wide-open spaces and the thrill of deep powder snow.
Unlike traditional skiing, which takes place on groomed and maintained slopes, snowcat skiing typically takes place in the backcountry. This means skiers can enjoy runs through forests, wide bowls, steep terrain, and deep snow that has yet to be touched by other skiers. If you dream of skiing on untouched powder in a remote, pristine mountain setting, snowcat skiing is the way to go.
2. How Does Snowcat Skiing Work?
Snowcat skiing relies on a specially designed snowcat vehicle, which is capable of traveling across snow-covered terrain. These vehicles are equipped with large tracks instead of wheels, which allow them to move easily through deep snow. The snowcat picks up skiers from the base of a mountain and transports them to the top of a designated run or remote backcountry area. Once you reach the top, you exit the snowcat and are ready to ski down fresh powder in a secluded, natural environment.
Typically, snowcat skiing involves skiing multiple runs during the day. The snowcat will shuttle you back and forth from the base to the top, providing access to several different runs throughout the day. This ensures that you can enjoy a variety of terrain, from gentle powder fields to steeper slopes and trees. The number of runs you can do in a day varies depending on the terrain and the snowcat’s route, but it’s a unique experience that is far more intimate than traditional lift-serviced skiing.
3. Why Choose Snowcat Skiing?
Snowcat skiing offers a number of advantages for skiers looking for a more exciting and rewarding winter sports experience:
Fresh Powder: Since snowcat skiing takes place in the backcountry, you’ll have access to untouched powder snow, which is often much deeper and softer than the snow on groomed slopes.
Less Crowded: Snowcat skiing allows you to avoid the crowded ski lifts and crowded slopes that you often find at traditional ski resorts. This means more freedom to explore and fewer people on the mountain.
Scenic Views: Snowcat skiing often takes place in remote areas of the mountain, offering breathtaking views of natural landscapes and wide-open spaces.
Customizable Experience: Many snowcat skiing operators offer guided trips, allowing you to select runs based on your skill level and preferences. You can also choose from different types of terrain, including powder bowls, tree skiing, and steep slopes.
Intimate Adventure: Snowcat skiing provides a more personal and exclusive experience. With fewer skiers on the mountain, you can enjoy skiing at your own pace and take in the surroundings without distractions.
4. Who Can Try Snowcat Skiing?
Snowcat skiing is suitable for a wide range of skiers, from beginners to experts. However, it is important to note that snowcat skiing typically takes place in the backcountry, so it requires a certain level of fitness and skiing ability. Here’s a breakdown of who can enjoy snowcat skiing:
Beginners: While snowcat skiing is often associated with more experienced skiers, beginners can also try it. Some snowcat skiing operators offer beginner-friendly trips, with guided instruction to help you develop your skills. These trips often focus on gentle, wide-open terrain and provide a controlled environment for learning.
Intermediate Skiers: Snowcat skiing is perfect for intermediate skiers who are looking to progress beyond groomed slopes. These skiers will enjoy the wide range of terrain available in snowcat skiing areas, including powder fields and forest runs.
Advanced Skiers: For advanced and expert skiers, snowcat skiing offers access to some of the most challenging and remote slopes, including steep, technical terrain, and deep powder.
While snowcat skiing can be enjoyed by skiers of all abilities, it’s essential to make sure you’re comfortable with off-piste conditions. Even for beginners, snowcat skiing provides an opportunity to step up your game and experience the thrill of backcountry skiing in a safe and controlled manner.
5. Snowcat Skiing vs. Traditional Skiing
How does snowcat skiing compare to traditional skiing at a ski resort? Here are a few key differences:
Lift vs. Snowcat: Traditional skiing relies on ski lifts to transport you up the mountain, while snowcat skiing uses a snowcat to take you directly to the top of backcountry terrain. With snowcat skiing, you avoid the crowded lift lines and head straight to untouched powder.
Terrain: Traditional ski resorts typically have groomed slopes designed for all skill levels. In contrast, snowcat skiing takes you off the beaten path to areas with deep powder and natural terrain, often with no grooming at all.
Crowds: Ski resorts can be packed with skiers, especially during peak season, while snowcat skiing provides a more private and exclusive experience with fewer skiers on the mountain.
Cost: Snowcat skiing is generally more expensive than traditional skiing. The exclusivity, expert guides, and access to remote terrain come with a higher price tag, but many skiers find the experience worth the cost.
6. The Best Snowcat Skiing Spots in British Columbia
British Columbia (BC) is one of the best places in the world for snowcat skiing, offering access to some of the most pristine powder skiing in North America. Here are a few of the top snowcat skiing destinations in BC:
White Grizzly Cat Skiing: Known for its untouched powder and stunning mountain views, White Grizzly offers a range of snowcat skiing options, including accessible terrain for beginners and challenging runs for advanced skiers. With a focus on safety and expert guides, it’s one of the premier snowcat skiing locations in BC.
Kootenay Cat Skiing: The Kootenay region in BC offers some of the best cat skiing terrain, with vast powder bowls and tree skiing runs. It’s perfect for adventure seekers who want to ski in the rugged, scenic mountains of BC.
Monashee Powder Snowcats: Located in the Monashee Mountains, this cat skiing operation offers wide-open powder runs and incredible views of the surrounding mountains. With plenty of terrain for all skill levels, it’s an excellent choice for a snowcat skiing adventure.
Selkirk Tangiers: Located in the Selkirk Mountains, this renowned operation provides access to 70,000 acres of terrain, offering an unforgettable snowcat skiing experience for skiers of all levels.
7. What to Expect on Your Snowcat Skiing Trip
On your snowcat skiing trip, expect an unforgettable experience. Most trips include the following:
Pick-Up: You’ll meet your guide and other participants at a designated location. A snowcat vehicle will transport you and your group to the starting point at the top of the mountain.
Skiing: Once you reach the top, you’ll be ready to ski down fresh powder. Your guide will lead you down a series of runs, varying in difficulty based on your skill level.
Lunch and Breaks: Many snowcat skiing trips include a break for lunch, typically in a scenic spot on the mountain. You’ll have time to relax, take in the views, and refuel before heading out for more runs.
Safety: Safety is a top priority in snowcat skiing. Your guide will ensure you’re aware of avalanche risks, proper skiing techniques, and the best practices for navigating backcountry terrain.
8. Essential Gear for Snowcat Skiing
For a safe and comfortable snowcat skiing experience, you’ll need the right gear. Here’s a list of essential equipment for snowcat skiing:
Ski Gear: Skis, poles, and bindings designed for off-piste skiing are essential for snowcat skiing. Make sure your gear is suitable for deep powder snow.
Avalanche Safety Equipment: This includes an avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel. Many snowcat skiing operations provide this gear, but it’s important to be familiar with how to use it.
Outerwear: Wear waterproof and breathable layers to stay dry and warm. You’ll also need a helmet, goggles, and gloves.
Backpack: A small backpack to carry essentials like snacks, water, and extra clothing.
9. Safety Tips for Snowcat Skiing
Follow Your Guide: Always stay with your guide and follow their instructions.
Know Your Limits: Snowcat skiing takes place in challenging terrain. Make sure you are comfortable with off-piste skiing and know your skill level.
Wear Avalanche Gear: Be sure you’re equipped with the necessary avalanche safety equipment, and know how to use it.
Stay Hydrated and Fueled: Skiing in remote areas can be physically demanding, so make sure to hydrate and eat regularly.
