the thing is... this fic started off as a love letter to the dickbats era and how we didn't really get in-depth canon examining the aftermath of what wearing the cowl did to dick + the transformation of his relationships into something different (not necessarily better or worse) BUT i'm so burnt out from life and just absolutely unable to read comics or find any joy in them which is not something i can fix by brute-forcing my writing or trying to reread timeline-relevant comics for sourcing/referencing without getting any enjoyment from any of it. and this is not rlly a post about anything in particular i guess except... well, it sucks

To make it clear exactly what has happened with me and The West Wing:
Years ago I watched up through season 3 but wasn't a huge fan of the third season somehow? and I think just wasn't in the mood for it so we stopped there and never went back
At some point among all the Josh/Joey teasing I looked them up on ao3, saw that there was less than a page of fics for them, and immediately became so disgusted I declared the fandom devoid of taste and bounced off indignantly
Late last year we decided to start a rewatch on a whim because my aunt recently moved to D.C. and we were going on holiday there in February/March so we thought it'd be cool to see the area she lives in
I enjoyed the show! :) I was still only 80% paying attention while doing my crochet, but it was good!!
I checked out ao3 again and, despite my continued disappointment over the lack of Josh/Joey, decided to give the slash ships a try. Abbey/Jed/Leo was my main curiosity but wow there sure were a lot of Josh/Sam fics on them. They seemed a bit generic of a ship for me, but this many people had to be seeing something, right?
I enjoyed the fics. Quite a bit. Ended up reading quite a few, actually. (Helped also by the Fanfic-Reading-Challenge, which had brought me back into fic reading and gameified the whole process to my intense delight!!)
In preparation for the trip I saved a whole bunch more onto my tablet. In practice, I actually ended up reading a lot more just on my phone; as a non-American I had no mobile data, but I could open up a page on hotel wi-fi and keep it up all day, and if the fic happened to be in the old style that could be 30k long but posted as a one-shot...
We went to DC and between the fic (I'd taken a break for other ships but it just seemed RIGHT to read West Wing fic in DC, you know?) and talking endlessly about the show with my parents everything sort of... crystalised. I walked the streets in my new grey Washington DC jumper with the seal of the president on it and I felt like Josh Lyman and I giggled a lot. :D (even though he would definitely be wearing a Yale sweatshirt or something instead lol but don't ruin it for me. I love that goddamn jumper now <33)
I got home from the holiday two weeks before my parents and spent the vast majority of my time reading more The West Wing fic. <3
I have. not read so much fanfiction so quickly since, I wanna say: Supernatural at the very least? But I was (and remain!) picky about SPN fics, there are just A LOT of them; really, the closest comparison would be Star Trek, in all of fuckin' 2010???
uhhh this is what my fandoms filter on my ao3 bookmarks looks like. I've had this account for fifteen years now btw <3
Tumblr media
11. I actually haven't watched any more of the show since before the holiday lmao since I've been waiting for my parents to get back (they're here now!) so I'm still on... early s3 I wanna say???
The End :)
