hi everyone say hi to this stray cat that's been living in our garage, the neighbors first let us know about him saying there was a sick cat hanging around their yard and wanted our help to catch him so they could "help him" and we thankfully realized a bit later that what they meant by help him was "euthanize him", but they didn't want to say that cause they knew we wouldn't help catch the cat for them if we knew they were just gonna kill it. so we've been nursing him back to health with antibiotics n stuff and he was finally healthy enough that we thought it was okay to let him back outside. he doesn't want to leave the garage though so we leave the door open for him and he comes out every now and again. i don't believe the neighbors Really thought he was beyond saving, they were just tired of having a sick cat in their yard :I i'm glad we were able to save him. here's the handsome man

What Pet I Think They'd Have and Why: Karasuno Edition

Daichi Sawamura

Of course he'd have a police dog

He's a cop and if he'd have any pet he'd have a buddy to help him bust criminals and fight crime

But I don't think Daichi would have a "normal" dog breed like a German Shepherd, Malinois, or Akita

I feel like Daichi would have a Rottweiler not bc they are my favorite dog breed

But Rottweilers used to be very prevalent in many police forces around the world until German Shepard and Malinois became more common

Also Rottweilers gained a harsh reputation for being aggressive bc they were trained by drug lords and criminals and were used to in fighting

Rottweilers are very muscular, sturdy, and hard working dogs

If trained right and with proper love and care these dogs are GREAT and I mean GREAT companions

They are stubborn and can be territorial with strangers, but, they are very loving towards familiars and family

They are a kind of one or two people fits them kind of dog

They also need constant stimulus as they were breed to be very hardworking dogs

Rottweilers used to pull sleds full of butchered meat bc they were so strong and the original breed was much bigger than the one we know today

They also herded large livestock through the alps and Roman region and are known to be fearless

They are also one of the oldest dog breeds

These dogs became popular Police dogs during the World Wars

Bc they were being used so much their guardian qualities were more showcased so more and more people wanted one to help keep and eye on their children

Since they are herding dogs they are good around children and can keep them in a yard if they are taught the parameters

Rottweilers despite their size generally don't bark a lot either, they are very sneaky when approaching a possible threat and will ppun e from behind

This is why I think Daichi would have one to be by his side

I feel like Daichi would do a lot of research into a good companion and finding a good breeder to find one after deciding

He'd get one as a puppy and personally see to it's training, working with a pro the whole time

His dog would also be a great family protector when he's home with his spouse and possible children, if he ends up having any

Koushi Sugawara

I feel like Koushi would be that really awesome teacher that has a really sweet and sociable pet that he brings in for the kids a lot

I feel Koushi would want soemthing small and cute so a rabbit of some sort would suit him well

Rabbits can be very loving with a small family most of the time or sometimes only one person

Rabbits are prey animals so some breeds wouldn't do well in a loud room full of young children

So what specific rabbit breed would suit his job?

So I chose the Harlequin Rabbit for Koushi

Harlequin rabbits are very social and loving towards owners and strangers alike

They also are known to be very silly, playful and very intelligent

They come in two colour types: Japanese and Magpie

The picture above is an example of Japanese while a Magpie can be colored in just about any other colour other than black nd orange like lilac, white, chocolate, blue and/or black

I feel like this specific type of rabbit would suit him so well as it would be comfortable around all those kids

Be very social and would be less likely to nip them

And it would be energetic enough to keep up with the kids

Koushi wouldn't just want a pet for his classroom though, he'd want a cuddle buddy for at home

He'd want a companion to sit on his lap while he works on lessons

He'd also want a pet that wasn't too lazy as his life would be pretty busy

The only thing is is that rabbits are high maintenance and need very specific foods, medicines, and an experienced vet to care for them

But rabbits are cuddly little crackheads that Koushi would adore

Energetic enough to keep up with his life, but snuggly and home bodied enough to not exhaust him

Asahi Azumane

Asahi is a fashion designer and thus would spend a lot of time hunched over a sketch book making designs

In other words, he has a very home based and indoor job

So he'd need a pet that isn't energetic and obnoxious like a husky or chihuahua

So I chose the Havanese

Havanese is the national dog of Cuba

This dog may be small but they are incredibly sturdy

These dogs become attached quickly and are extremely loyal to said lone owner

Something else that is good for Asahi is these dogs do not do good alone and are willing to follow their owners to the ends of the Earth

They can be described as velcro dogs bc of how attach to the hip with their owners they are

These dogs can be lively and active but they don't need much exercise as they are smaller

Most of their daily exercise can be met in a house with some light play

Also, these dogs are extremely friendly towards strangers and can be described as good host dogs

Another plus for Asahi about this breed is they aren't particularly vocal, most are rather quiet and reserved almost

The last thing you'd want is for people to look down on you for letting your pet act spoiled by barking and nipping at people's ankles

They also love to perform for others

They like attention and are good in groups

Asahi would have to meet with a lot of new people like models and companies and whatnot so a social dog would be best

Asahi also would spend a lot of time in an office or at home and since these dogs don't need much exercise he would be able to have it sleep on his lap while he works without disturbance

I also feel like Asahi would become a bit of a hermit

Like he would contact people but he wouldn't leave his house unless he absolutely had to or wanted to (which isn't often)

Havanese are home-bodied dogs and love just chillin' out on a warm lap or on a couch cushion beside their owners

Yū Nishinoya

Now I DO NOT think Noya should have a pet until he decides to settle down somewhere

Travel can really exhaust a person so it would harm an animal tenfold

So, if you travel a lot DO NOT GET A PET IT WILL ONLY HARM THEM

But if Yū were to have a pet.............................

Noya would need a pet that can travel well, is small enough to not cost a lot, is very attached to their owners, and can eat just about anything

I thought briefly of other rodents since rodents are generally small and can eat just about any food

But raccoons, possums, and other larger rodents that are more common for pets would be too hard to get on planes and boats since you need certification to own them

Rats on the other hand don't need such certifications in most countries and fill all the other requirements

The rat he would have isn't a Dumbo rat like in the picture above, he'd have like a wild rat that he befriended and decided to take with him so it'd most like be brown

Noya would 100% fight anyone who says they hate rats

He hypes up his pet rat to no end

He calls Asahi whenever he can and tells him about all the cool stuff his rat does and sends pictures of his rat being held up to a gorgeous background of famous landmarks in other countries

Nlya always has his rat around the back of his neck and wears a hoodie, scarf, or something like that to hide him so he can join Noya in places that don't allow pets

I also chose a rat bc they are incredibly loyal and I feel like if Noya were to be really tired on a plane and pass out, he would need a pet that he wouldn't have to worry about running away

Of course he has trained his rat to do amazing tricks, you already know

Also, as I previously mentioned, rats can eat just about anything, so his constant travel wouldn't hurt his companion diet

Rats are also quiet generally and aren't overly energetic so he wouldn't have to be worried about being escorted out for having a rat under his scarf

Chikara Ennoshita

Shibas are very independent dog, let's just start with that bc Chikara would need a pet that doesn't need constant attention

With him being a personal trainer he needs a pet that can self entertain

Something else about Shibas is they can often housebreak themselves bc of how fussy and finicky they are

You can also find them cleaning themselves much like a cat

Chikara would be busy for a good bit of his time so he doesn't really have time to properly spend time to housebreak a pet

But Shibas were originally bred to hunt and flush out game like birds and rabbits and other such small animals

A fact about Shibas is they almost went extinct during WWII bc of food shortages a distemper

Distemper is a disease only animals can be affected by that attacks many different systems in their bodies

Also, Shibas are the number one most common companion dog in Japan

Something else about Shibas is that they are fairly healthy, some of the more major problems they have are glaucoma, cataracts, hip dysplasia, entropion, and luxating patella

A lot of eye conditions but are easily avoided if you bring them in for very periodic eye checks and hip examinations

So these are easy to avoid as long you keep an eye on them

Over all I think that if Chikara were to have a pet it would need to be fairly self-sufficient but also something could have a very chill and laid back relationship with

Something that doesn't need to be on his lap all the time but something he can love and nurture

Kiyoko Shimizu & Ryūnoske Tanaka

Now I know I know

Ryu would be a dog person

He'd want a big manly pet not a cat blah blah blah

Kiyoko would definitely be a cat person

She wouldn't want a purebred and would probably find a box of some kittens with Ryu on the side of the sidewalk

Now look me in the eye and lie to me by saying that Ryu would now start crying immediately upon seeing like four lonely little kittens in a box that need a home

Needless to say, they take them home and nurture them endlessly

But Tanaka would be the kind of guy that harness trains his cats so they can go out on walks

Kiyoko would research how to harness train them, what food would be the best, and anything else they need to take care of these four cats

Imagine seeing these two, a big muscular dude and this goddess walking four cats on harnesses down the street

I literally cannot stop thinking about Ryu and Kiyoko cuddling on the couch with all four adult and rather large cats draping themselves across the two of them

I feel like the reason Ryu would want them harness trained is bc he wouldn't be able to spend much time with them

His job as a personal trainer would keep him busy

So on his morning jogs to stay fit he'd want to take not only Kiyoko but the cats as well

Hi! Im relatively new to your blog, found you thru the princess & warlock story today. Happy 1300! Prompt; cats are always meowing at (character). House cats stray cats friends' cats even that one time at the zoo. They figure hey, cats are just cute chatty little friends, but really they always had something important to say.

Thank you! Also, you accidentally picked one of my favorite things in the world to write about, so this got loooong.

Cats. Cats always chat at me. It’s been going on for most of a year. I have no idea why. Every stray cat I see has to walk up to me and chatter at me. It’s to the point where I carry kitty treats. 

My friend, Tara, has three cats and they all have to come meow at me. Every time I come over. It’s a cacaphony of meowing for like five minutes. Tara says they’re usually pretty quiet, and they almost never meow unless, like, something’s up. (Sometimes ‘something’s up’ means ‘there’s a coat hanger on my favorite cushion’ because, well, cats.) 

Maybe it’s a pheromone thing? Cats think I smell like someone they need to talk to? They’re pretty friendly.

(Sometimes I think they’re trying to cheer me up because my old cat, the General, passed away. It’s kind of nice and kind of sad to think about at the same time, so I don’t think about it too often.)

It’s kind of fun to go to the zoo. Cheetahs meow, did you know? It’s cute as heck! “Who’s the fastest land mammal?” “Meow. Meow!” 

Tigers, uh, do not meow, honestly. I mean they are really big, like, chesty animals so they have a kind of deep growl, but they kind of... bellow at me? They yell. Tigers and Lions yell at me. It’s damn near human sounding.

The looks I get from zookeepers, I’m telling you.

And I swear at one point I had this bobcat, like, out of nowhere walk up and start meowing at me. I tell people about it and they’re like ‘yep, that’s our Ella’ but like seriously that was kind of a bowl quaking moment.

Like, regular house cats can mess you up if they lose their shit at you, and bobcats are fucking stacked, you know? They’re not, like, Lion big but they’re bigger than a lot of dogs, and when it comes right up to you and is like “hey” it is kind of frightening, let me tell you! 

It was clearly friendly, which was super weird. It actually did that love rub thing on my ankles as I tried valiantly not to piss itself.

It kept talking to me!

I said “I’m sorry, cat friend, I don’t know what you’re saying,” and gave it cat treats. What else was I gonna do? It did accept my offering of treats and gave me a mildly reproachful look as it wandered off.

Cats, right? 

Well, no, actually. This wasn’t a ‘cats, man’ type situation. 

So I went to another friend. A... witchy friend, shall we say. She’s kinda weird but in a good way. She’s got a really normal apartment but there’s this one closet that locks that I’ve only ever glimpsed inside of.

Well, I went to her and told her what was up. She owed me a favor anyway, you know? 

Well, I told her after her little tiny black cat, Squirt, got done talking to me.

The witch- she’s asked that I don’t name her, because of Reasons- nodded. “I noticed that,” she said. “I wondered if you’d ask me about it.”

“Do you know what’s going on?”

“No idea!” she said cheerfully, and unlocked the closet.

It was a storage closet? It had nothing weird inside. She dug around in it and pulled out a book, which she flipped through for a minute. It looked like a hand-written journal. “Okay, I think I can do this.”

“Do what?”

“Let you understand them. They’ve got something important to say, right?”

“Well, they seem to think so. I thought it was like, I dunno, a pheromone thing.”

“Yeah, that’s why came to me,” she said.

“Well... okay.”

“So we wanna facilitate interspecies communication, right? Do you have a cat?”

“Naw, not since the General died. I couldn’t...”

“Oh, yeah,” she said. “I gotcha. No, that’s fair.”

“Every stray cat in the neighborhood hunts me down.”

“Good, cause you’re not taking Squirt.’

I turned and looked at Squirt. “Hear that?”

“Maow,” Squirt replied. 

I followed her to her kitchen, where she started pulling all the spices out of the cabinet.

“I thought all your witchy shit was in the closet.”

“All my valuable shit is in the closet. I’m a kitchen witch. Any allergies?”

“Latex?”

“Shouldn’t be an issue.” She mixed up a cup of tea, stirring. “It’s got a bit of a kick.”

“For real?”

“Try it.”

The tea was warm and floral at first, and then there was a sort of spiciness that was kind of floral as well? And then it kicked me in the back of the throat. I wheezed.

“I warned ya!”

“You did,” I wheezed.

“Drink past it, you’ll be okay.”

The next sip was easier, and tempered with honey. I finally drained it all down, the last drop was honey sweet, though my lips still burned.

“Okay, go for a walk and see what happens.”

“Is this how you do all your magic?”

“Yep! Let me know, I’m curious.”

“Kay,” I said, and let myself back out.

I walked down the street, and then found a side path towards the park, and headed that way.

A stray cat came up to me, and rubbed it’s head on my ankles.

“Oh, now you don’t talk?” I asked.

“We talk,” it said.

I jumped.

“You listen now,” it said.

“Okay, yeah.”

“Come with me,” it said.

“I’m coming, lead the way,” wondering what exactly the witch had put in that tea. It led me to the park, and to the wooded area behind it, through a path that must be mostly used by cats and deer, to a little clearing. Around the edge was a bunch of trash you’d expect in a little clearing near civilization- beer cans and condom wrappers and food trash- and also an absolute herd of friggin cats.

“Oh. Hey. Everybody.”

One tiny cat, maybe still a kitten, came from the back, dodging and weaving. “Hello,” it said. “You have learned that you understand.”

“Sure,” I said. “Seems like y’all had something important to say.”

“The General has traveled to his next life.”

“Yeah. Y’all knew him, huh?”

“It is hard, when an old friend leaves. You have had time to mourn, yes?”

“Yeah. Wait, you want me to get a new cat? That’s the important thing?”

“Yes. New friend. Now you can understand, and talk to us.”

“Why is that important?”

They all kind of looked around, and an old fluffy orange cat that looked something like a matted cushion limped forward. It stared at her, one eye gone milky with age. “My mistress is dying,” it said, simply. “She is the cat witch, the one we speak to. She is dying.”

“You can understand us.”

“We knew you could learn the words.”

“You must help us.”

“Okay, okay, I can’t- settle, please, I can’t understand when you talk at the same time. Okay. So you want me to get a cat and talk to y’all because you need a cat witch.”

“Yes,” the ancient marmalade cat said.

“Why do you need a cat witch?”

“Tis an ancient bargain we struck, when the world was younger. Cat witches speak to us, help us carry our culture. We are so shortlived, you can carry it longer. They learn our magic. We protect.”

“So... I should go to the animal shelter then. No offense, but I have friends and whatever magic lets me get along with y’all-”

“Most of us are not tame enough to live indoors, you are right,” a really big tom said. “We have not elected. It is a choice between you and your next friend.”

“Well, okay. Um, should I- do you want me to talk to your- your mistress?”

The marmalade cat preened. “Yes. I will lead you to her. It is not far, even for humans.” There was a little snickering, which I ignored.

I followed the marmalade cat to a little old lady’s house and knocked.

She immediately scooped up the purring old cat. “There she is, Miss Betsy! Oh, you found her!”

“Yeah.” I glanced at the hilariously named Miss Betsy, but Miss Betsy was too busy purring and drooling. I sighed. “She said I needed to talk to you about this cat witch thing,” I said.

“Oh good, they found one. Yes, come in. Come in. I just made some tea, would you like some?”

I mean, I could go on, but long story short I have a new cat and an old book. Pookie is really taking to the harness, we go for walks every day and talk to the neighborhood cats.

Fortunately, stray cats are good at finding money. I don’t ask where it comes from, it’s probably better that way. 

I’m trying to get my neighbors on the harnessed cat thing and that is going pretty well, actually, especially since I am pretty good at convincing cats to wear them long enough to get used to them. Also I kind of have a... rep, now. 

So things are going as well as can be expected.

Let me tell you what, though, I am fucking pumped to go back to the zoo.

It's sad that you can't keep Marmalade. Have you tried any cat-introduction techniques? Seems like such a waste that in a few months he might be big enough that Dave wouldn't mind him! (Although as a person who lives in a house where cats have to be Separated Unless Supervised, I understand.)

(I’ve gotten a couple asks similar to this one, so I’ll put my general answer here)

I’ve tried some basic cat intro techniques (feeding the cats close to each other, putting them behind a transparent barrier so they can see each other, etc) and they seem to be great with that. It’s clear Marm really wants to like Dave, he always starts purring whenever he sees Dave, and tries to snuggle up to him. Dave, on the other hand, is fine with Marm until Marm moves. I think it either triggers some prey drive or spooks him, and Dave tends to be very Bitey when playful/nervous and we all know he doesn’t seem to understand his own strength. Probably 4/5 times he bites me he draws blood.

If I had time and a decent space, I honestly think I could make the introductions work and get Marm and Dave to get along after a month or two until Marm could hold his own against Dave. Unfortunately the two main problems I have here is a) time and b) space. By the end of August I will be moving back up north for university, and my apartment is not very Dave proof. He can open literally every single door in the apartment, most of them without even using the door handle (so baby locks wouldn’t work). I’m also doing my second student teaching practicum in the fall, and it would stress me out to leave little Marm alone with Dave all day. If Dave was able to get along with Marm before I moved back to university it would probably be okay for them to be in the same space, but as is I don’t think that is going to happen.

To be honest, it’s probably for the best that Marm goes to a different home. As long as I find one that I’m comfortable with him going to -indoors only (Catio or harness training ok), maybe another cat, access to a vet, people who will give him a lot of attention- then I think I can let him go. He’d probably be happier in a different home tbh. Right now he’s stuck in the bathroom on his own, and he has been crying nonstop since we gave Peppermint away yesterday. The only time he stops crying is when I’m holding him, but since Dave is around I can’t be with him all the time.

There’s lots of great cats out there, and if my grandma doesn’t spay her cats (🙄) there will probably be more kittens next year I will fall in love with. It’s hard not to fall in love with kittens. Maybe once Dave is out of his moody teenage phase and we have determined the source of his aggression we can get another cat.

He watches as she pulls down a blanket, flopping a pillow down onto the ground beside it.

“C’mon,” she settles next to his nest, patting his own bedding thick with his scent. “It’s too cold to not sleep together.”

He follows her after that. There’s not a step that she takes that he is not right behind her. If she will share his nest at night then he will share her day. 

The people, they come and go with more frequency than they did in the beginning, paying him less mind with every given day, and he thinks he understands now - her pack is not her pack. At least not most of them. She’s a healer; a wise one. They come to her for guidance and she grants it and sends them on their way regardless if they bring anything to her in offering.

So he stands guard at her side when they come so they know their wise one is a powerful one indeed. It’s all he can offer her. In that, he is no better than the most pitiful of the humans, and it fills him with shame.

And then the humans are gone, but her kindness remains true. She pets him. Feeds him. She whispers her little stories into his fur as she falls asleep. 

And he wishes there was something more he could do.

She’s humming, a sweet sound that is only comparable to the songbirds of the wild.

He has long learned to stay out of her way on days like this, when she takes a stick with dried grass to the floor and patiently beats the dust out of her blankets, leaving them in the sun to warm.

But today something has changed. Today she takes his blankets and he balks at his nest being disturbed. She pays him no mind, lifting the corner of one to her snout and then sniffing. Her nose wrinkles up.

“I’m going to have to wash this with lye,” she mutters.

He whimpers. He had just gotten those blankets to smell like he liked them, but she’s still not paying attention. Instead she is staring at the floor with a perplexed frown.

“Maybe,” the witch laughs. “One never knows.”

When the sky turns to burnish gold, the cat and her kitten depart, wandering down the dusty dirt road. His witch waves goodbye, scratching his head with a heavy sigh.

And he’s angry for some reason suddenly. So very angry.

He thought she at the very least the cat was a member of her pack, but- these people. They just come for a little while and then they leave. No one ever stays. They just take and take and never give and-

It’s not right that he’s angry with them. He’s knows that when he is healed, he will have to leave her too. It’s not right for him to stay here when he is good enough to move, not right of him to steal her companionship as if it were something to be shared with a black dog.

He comes up short, staring at his nest of blankets that only just started to smell right again. In the center of it lay the knotted dishtowel, a toy left behind by the kitten she loved.

He stares at it longer, head tilting. He may not be able to give her much, but- but if he shed his skin, walked on two legs instead of four for a few nights…

He’s not strong enough to make the change. Not yet. But maybe- maybe he could give her something so she was not lonely anymore.

He shakes himself again. He must be going mad being kept indoors like this for so long. He should start making plans to leave. Maybe tomorrow.

Of course, that’s what he told himself yesterday.

Two more weeks pass and then he can put it off no longer. His wounds no longer hurt, they no longer pull nor break nor smell with the promise of infection. She has done all that she can do for him and more.

He crawls close to her that night just to steal just a few more moments of her scent. He’ll live longer than her, likely. He’lllive until she is nothing but the earth that she loves, but he’ll carry herscent long after the world has forgotten her name.
