SUNHATS AND TAGS
Moving is such a daunting task, even when you’re just helping a friend move. There’s something anxiety inducing about packing someone else’s shit. I find myself unsure what items she wants in what boxes, what is fragile, and what things are most important to her. I decided to help in pack away kitchenware, because it should be easy to figure all that stuff out with kitchen stuff. I stood corrected, though, when I grabbed her worn down, plastic Tupperware, that’s been stained over the years by spaghetti, and went to put it in the box with the plates and bowls, only to find it full and placed with unprotected glass cups. That didn’t seem right, the glass should stay together tightly bound in old newspaper to prevent them from breaking. As I looked down toponder the placement of the dishware, smooth ebony hands grabbed mine and took the Tupperware from mine. I look up at my friend, Carmella, as she walks away from me and over to a box at the other end of the kitchen, by the oven. “The Tupperware goes over here,” she directed me towards a box full of Tupperware that I must have missed. She gives me a teasing glare and I return it with a sheepish nod and a chuckle. As she gets up to leave to her room, I turn back to the unpacked plates and remember the hazardously packed glasses.
“Carmella,” I call out to her, “shouldn’t you put the glasses in newspaper, or something, so it doesn’t break.” She pokes her head outside of her bedroom wearing a straw sunhat. The same sunhat I gave her on her 16th birthday. It looked almost like it day 6 years ago, except the bright pink bow was worn down and there was a dent at the top probably from being forgotten under a mountain of clothes in her closet. The small tag that was once on the bow was missing too. When I gave it to her, I made a small rainbow tag that read “Love you, Carmella. Happy Birthday!” she took it as a nice note to a friend, but now it seemed to mean so much more.
Her sweet sixteen was a small party, neither nor I were very popular in high school, but she was content with the small group of friends we had. The party was at the local arcade and bowling alley that her dad managed. He was able to shut the place down for the night so we would have it to ourselves. Balloons and streamers turned neon under the fluorescent lights. The bowling alley is surprisingly beautiful and mysterious when you have it to yourself, it only took us a few minutes to realize that we didn’t actually have to bowl in the bowling alley – so we didn’t. No one was there to glare at us when we played tag on the slippery lanes, we could take off our shoes and skate on the lanes with our socks and no one told us no. Of course, Carmella’s dad would half-heartedly try to scold us every now and then, but we didn’t pay attention. While our friends danced under the luminescent balloons, I pulled Carmella behind the bowling lanes, and gave her a box with the hat inside. She pulled it out and a confused look spread across her face. “Thanks?” She questioned, “I really needed a hat, I guess.” My face fell upon seeing her reaction.
“You hate it. It-it’s a shit present, isn’t it?” I stammered looking own at my feet.
“No! No, it isn’t,” she refuted, “it’s just…unexpected?” She grabbed my shoulders and gave them a quick squeeze. “I like it. Really, I do,” Carmella insisted trying to make me feel better. I suppose she did because she wore it throughout the night, and at every beach day we had during our summers in high school. She would wear it to all of my open mic performances, so I could see her through all of the brilliant showroom lights. She put it on and make funny faces to cheer me up whenever I felt depressed. She was wearing it now, cheering me up when I was about to lose her to New York City. A lone tear falling down my cheek. As it fell, I looked up from my hands, that I hadn’t noticed I was staring at. I see Carmella staring at me, her face contorted with concern.
“Jenny, are you okay?” She asked.
“Yeah, I’m okay.” I croaked out, “Hold on a minute.” I sped past her into the bedroom and grabbed a sheet of paper, a pair of scissors, and some markers. I turned away from Carmella and started to work, snipping and drawing on the small piece of paper.
“What are you doing,” I heard Jenny giggle as she walked towards me. I turned to herslightly, to prevent her from looking at my work
“Hold on! It’s a surprise!” I chortled. I took out a black marker and wrote a small note. “Done, you can see it now!” I exclaimed and turned to her holding out a small rainbow tag with the words, “I love you, Carmella. Good luck in New York.” Carmella gingerly took the tag and tied it onto the pink bow of her hat. She looked up at me with glassy eyes and pulled me into a hug. “Thanks, Jenny.”

We Predict These Kitchen Trends Will Be Everywhere in 2021@|what is new in kitchen design@|https://ift.tt/3h75BTp
Tumblr media
DANA GALLAGHER
While the all-white kitchen will probably never go out of style, there are lots of new design trends for 2021 that will make you equally happy. Think: natural elements with some pops of color as well as a visit to the dark side with colors you might never expect. We know, we know. You’ve already carefully chosen every appliance, picked out each piece of hardware, and planned your kitchen design to a T, but there are ways to dip your toes into the world of color without messing up your rustic farmhouse kitchen aesthetic. On the color front, why not try painting your ceiling a fun color, like Haint Blue? How about hauling in some colorful appliances?

If you’ve been wanting to layer in more natural elements, try “sustainable” and “eco-friendly” items. These are words that are popping up more and more, with many companies offering green solutions for cabinets and shelving. You can also think about bringing in handmade tiles in materials like terra-cotta and cement—a great solution for adding a little more soul to your space, regardless of whether or not you opt to completely switch over to a farmhouse style vibe.
When it comes to countertops, quartz is quickly becoming an affordable and low maintenance alternative to our beloved marble. There are even new trends for accessorizing your countertops, like vintage plate racks made to display your grandmother’s china. Hardware and metal finishes continue to push the envelope—think brass, nickel, and matte black. Removable wallpaper companies are making it even easier to experiment with pattern on walls and backsplashes. Consider 2021 as the year of the kitchen!

Kitchen Larders
Originally a room in the home used for storing and preserving foods (think: the refrigerator before the refrigerator was invented), the kitchen larder has transformed into a stand-alone cupboard or pantry. They can be large enough to house the majority of your dry goods but small enough to keep things organized while taking up a minimal amount of valuable space. Forget a walk-in and sub in counter-top cabinet or add doors to enclose pre-existing shelving.

Kitchen Wallpaper
While wallpaper has become less scary to the general population over the last five years or so, folks are still reluctant to hang it in the kitchen. If you’re scared about the permanency of wallpaper, try something less, well, permanent. There are plenty of peel-and-stick papers in trendy designs that are incredibly easy to install and remove. Hot tip: Opt for a graphic design that mimics the look of tile.

Kitchen Plate Racks
Vintage plate racks are coming back in a big way in 2021. Whether displayed on countertops or mounted on walls, they add a ton of soul to a space and give you an actual place to store and display your dishware instead of hiding it away in a hutch or cupboard.

Open Shelving
Open shelves allow you to showcase your beautiful kitchenwares among other heirlooms and antiques. The ability to see through your storage also means everything is easy to find. Just don’t forget to clean your items often since they will be open to the elements that might be floating through your kitchen. It’s also helpful to keep every day items on the lowest, most accessible shelf.

Standout Sinks
You don’t have to go nuts to achieve an on-trend kitchen. While an apron-front sink in a farmhouse kitchen isn’t exactly unexpected, a farmhouse sink in soapstone with brass hardware is a showstopper—especially when it’s set against white walls, wood cabinets, and stainless steel countertops.

For those who fear color, focus on mixing up the finishes. Designer Cathy Chapman chose white beadboard on the ceiling and shiplap for the walls. She used unlacquered brass strap hinges and latches on the cabinets, black marble on the island countertop, and tons of warm woods on the floors, backsplash, and remaining countertops.
