Sollux: Worry
Erisol Week Day 5 - Blood
[This takes place during Chapter 26 (Karkat: Lift). It may not make a lot of sense if you haven't read the fic, though, fair warning ^^;;
Recommended listening: Moments - Alexa Ray]
----------
Eridan lay still on the bed as the medics bustled around his unconscious form. Violet traced wet lines down his face; his hair was tacky and stuck together in several places from it. Worse than his face, though, was his knee - Sollux couldn't bring himself to more than glance at the injury there without feeling nauseated by the blood and scraps of skin hanging loose over the swelling joint.
But... he was alive.
Sollux tried to keep his attention from dwelling on the injuries and focused instead on the good things.
Eridan's chest rose and fell in steady breaths; it didn't hitch or wheeze. Neither of the medics tending to him seemed the least bit concerned, despite the amount of blood. And there wasn't really all that much new blood, for that matter; as the medics worked, most of the violet was cleaned up and didn't return. All good things.
What made him the most nervous was the fact that Eridan hadn't woken-
“.....Sol?”
-up.
Sollux straightened from his slumped posture with a snap that set off protests in his already-pounding head when he heard the other's voice. “Eridan! Fuck, I was so- how are you doing? Are you okay- I mean, like, nothing's hurting really awfully, or-”
Eridan's eyes were unfocused; he only blinked a few times in response to Sollux's panicked garbling.
Sollux jerked as he felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Ariona, the gold-blooded head medic, staring down at him. “You're only going to stress him out, Sollux,” she reprimanded him quietly. “If you can't be calm, you can wait outside.”
Sollux swallowed down a hiss and turned his glare into a worried glance over to Eridan again. The last thing he wanted was to leave Eridan alone here, especially like this. He could remember all too clearly the last time he'd seen the seadweller here, laying limply in one of the grey-white beds...
Eridan seemed to be remembering it too; as he looked around and realized where he was, his movements began to get a little jumpier and his breathing sped up a bit.
Ariona frowned. “...Now look what-”
Sollux interrupted the other yellowblood, who definitely seemed on the verge of blaming Eridan's increasing distress on Sollux. “It's not me,” he snapped; then grit his teeth until the urge to swear at her had passed before speaking again. “It's being here.”
“What in the world do you mean?”
Sollux cast a scowl up at her - did she not remember? - as he leaned in to take Eridan's hand in one of his; then he redirected his attention back to Eridan, who'd started to shrink into himself as best he could while on his back in a bed. “Hey, easy, easy, ED, it's okay. You're okay,” he murmured, pulling his chair closer to Eridan's head with his psionics so he could meet his gaze properly. “You got hurt, that's all. Focus on me, okay?”
Eridan seemed to be doing his best; Sollux made encouraging noises.
“Are you done with his head?” he directed over his shoulder at the medics without turning away. “He'll do better with his glasses back on.”
His answer came in the form of Zollie, the oliveblood, coming up and putting Eridan's glasses on for him. “He can have them for a while again, at least. We need to deal with his knee right now, then we'll finish checking his head,” she responded quietly, watching as Eridan first startled as the glasses were put on, then blinked a few times and relaxed a little once he realized what they were.
“You with me, ED?” Sollux asked quietly, returning his attention fully to the seadweller.
“...I... think...?” Eridan blinked hard a few more times, his gaze sliding away before being jerked back to Sollux's face several times. “...What... why'm I...”
“You got hurt, at the mining site,” Sollux replied, forcing himself to keep his voice gentle and swallowing back all the fear and pain and desire to shake Eridan until he learned some god-fucking-damn sense.
He could tell that being here was already scaring the seadweller; the last thing Sollux wanted to do was exacerbate that fear with his own reaction. There would be time for all of that later, once Eridan was fully present and, preferably, not still in the med bay at all.
“...I...” Eridan frowned a little, letting his gaze wander off without forcing it back this time. “...The... the wall...”
“Yeah. It fell on you.” Sollux's voice ended up rather flat from his effort to keep the lingering panic out of it. That statement, the barest-possible-bones way of describing the sheer fucking terror of what had happened, sounded almost ridiculous in comparison with the events of the night.
“I'm... I'm not...?”
Sollux gritted his teeth and reminded himself to stay calm, forcing back too-vivid memories of Eridan - bearing up under a wall holding back half the cliff, screaming in pain as it shifted, falling to his knees as it collapsed over him-
It occured to him, replaying those memories, that what Eridan was trying to ask was 'I'm not dead?'.
By all rights, after all, he should be. And that thought terrified Sollux - even though he wasn't, they'd been able to get him out and he was here and safe and even if he was bloody he was still-
Alive.
Sollux took a breath, squeezed the violetblood's hand, and shook his head. “You're fine,” he replied roughly; then hesitated as a movement from the medics drew his attention and thoughts back to the injury they were treating. “...I mean, mostly,” he amended. “You fucked up your knee something horrid... but you're okay. They're just treating it now.”
Zollie seemed to unintentionally punctuate that statement with the touch of a wet cloth that drew a gasp and a flinch from the seadweller. “Sorry, Eridan,” she apologized gently, “but we need to get it cleaned up. Does it hurt horribly?”
The seadweller swallowed and tried to turn his gaze down to see her, struggling to lift his head far enough; Sollux got an arm behind his back to help lift him. “...Z...Zol?” he managed. “What...”
“Getting your knee cleaned up, like I said,” she replied, seeming to have no trouble inferring what the other was trying to say. “It's scraped bloody, and all kinds of swollen. Does it hurt badly enough you want something for it? I can get some painkillers, or if it's really bad we can use some local anesthetic...”
“I... it's... it's okay,” Eridan managed after a moment, though he winced even at the carefully gentle ministrations of the oliveblood.
Sollux doubted it was actually okay, but he wasn't going to call Eridan out on it. Now now, anyway. “Focus on me, okay, ED?” Sollux said quietly instead, removing his arm from behind Eridan's head so the other lay back again. “They're going to get you cleaned up and fixed up, and then we'll be out of here, okay?”
Eridan nodded, swallowing hard; he squeezed his eyes shut - then seemed to think the better of it, eyes flying back open as his breathing hitched, his gaze desperately seeking Sollux.
Sollux caught up one of the seadweller's hands again. “It's okay, ED, it's okay. ZL, how long...?”
“It's going to be a while, Sollux, there's a lot of debris. Sand isn't easy to get out of anything, trolls included.”
Eridan flinched again, and Sollux squeezed his hand, feeling it tremble in his. “Just focus on me, okay...?”
Eridan turned his head to look back up at the yellowblood; Sollux swallowed and patted his hand. Eridan had looked bad to begin with, but it was getting worse now that he was awake; his pupils were narrowing, his hand in Sollux's shook, his breathing was unsteady...
He was remembering, Sollux was sure of it - not the cliff's collapse, no, he probably wouldn't really remember that for a while yet at best - but the memories that this place, the medbay, the bed, all of this, called up. The memories of being beaten to a pulp, then brought here with cuffs on his arms and legs to satisfy that stupid fear of him - a highblood - that everyone here had originally had.
Frankly, he was having some uncomfortable memories of that time shaken up into his head, and Sollux hadn't dealt with any of what Eridan had gone through - he'd just found the violetblood here, when it had happened.
“...Eridan,” he murmured, staving off the memories and leaning in to rest a hand on the seadweller's cheek. “Would you rather be... out, for this? So you're not so scared?”
Eridan flinched at a movement from Ariona and turned his head into Sollux's hand, pressing against it in search of comfort. He was silent, just trembling and breathing, for a long enough moment that Sollux started to worry-
Then he nodded - a small movement, just barely enough to qualify as one at all, but it was a nod.
“You want that?” Sollux asked again, to verify.
Eridan nodded that little nod again, and Sollux squeezed his hand.
“AO, can we put him under? He's getting really stressed.”
Ariona looked up at Sollux, then back down at Eridan, seeming to notice the physical reaction the seadweller was having for the first time. “...I suppose that we could manage something,” she replied slowly; then added, more sharply, “If he wants it.”
Eridan had shut his eyes again, but his nod this time was strong enough that even Ariona could see it.
She sighed. “Very well. Give me a moment. Zollie, please prep him while I get the anesthetic.”
She left the room; Zollie put down the instruments she'd been using and came up to follow the head medic's instructions.
Sollux didn't watch any of it; his focus was on Eridan. “Breathe, ED. You're okay, I promise. Nothing's going to happen,” he murmured, leaning down to gently touch Eridan's forehead with his. “You're okay. I'm here.”
Ariona came back in; Sollux ignored her and continued to try to coax Eridan to relax, petting his hair and whispering to him until the anesthesia overcame him and the seadweller drifted back into unconsciousness.
Even once he was asleep again, though, Sollux didn't leave, nor let go of his hand, the entire time the two medics were working.
Just in case.

Per Aspera Ad Astra [Through Hardship to the Stars] (Rated G) [Bellamy/Clarke] by @she-who-the-river-could-not-hold
Summary: It’s boredom one fateful night that leads Clarke Griffin to ditching the first basketball game of the season. That same boredom then leads to her choosing to hang out with one Bellamy Blake – which should feel weirder than it is since they haven’t really been friends since his sister’s disappearance two years ago.
But then their night really takes a turn.
The two of them discover a strange audio frequency that could change the small town of Arkadia, New Mexico – and the future – forever. Dropped phone calls, forgotten tapes, and strange lights follow Bellamy and Clarke as they race through the night on a scavenger hunt to discover the truth. When Murpy wakes up in Eligius headquarters, he knows he’s returned for a reason…if only he could understand his connection to the brown-eyed girl who keeps cropping up on the corners of his memory.
3rd Place Tie Theme and 2nd Place Tie Kiss to keep cover/keep a secret Trope Winner.
in the red snares (Rated T) [Octavia/Lincoln] by @justbecauseyoubelievesomething
Summary: The prevailing theory around the existence of Slayers (her existence) is that a variation of the alien parasite the miners unearthed deep in the Sub Stratum started infecting hosts in order to combat the vampire parasite. Octavia scoffs at the thought. The theory is probably right, especially since Monty is pretty confident in it, but she still hates the whole thing. The Slayer parasite really needs an upgrade in her opinion.

The Cockroach (Rated T) [Murphy/Emori] by @mobi-on-a-mission

Can’t Tell if this is True or Dream (Rated M) [Echo/Gabriel] by @kuklash
Summary: “Do you understand your mission, agent?” A cloud of smoke punctuated the Director’s question, streaming from his mouth in thick, grey ribbons.
“I am to evaluate the necessity of the work Dr. Santiago is doing and report back at the conclusion of the investigation,” Echo repeated her instructions. Her lungs filled with second-hand smoke and she stifled a cough.
“I hope you appreciate the delicacy of this mission, Echo.” His intense gaze bore a hole into her’s. “Gabriel is not to know the nature of your assignment.”
She met his gaze with equal intensity as she stood up to leave.
“I understand, sir.”
1st Place Most Unique Pairing Winner.
There are some things written in the stars (Rated G) [Bellamy/Clarke] by @changingthefairy-tale
Summary: Dear Bell,
I know you have a million questions. When I planned to come see you in Sau Paulo, I knew I wouldn’t have much time, and there was just too much I wanted to say. But also so much I knew I couldn’t. My only hope is that this journal answers some of your questions, and by some miracle saves your life.
My name is Clarke Griffin, a historian. We’ve never met before today, in your time at least. In 2019, I would be just starting my professorship at Arkadia University back in the states. That’s honestly the only reason Murphy didn’t fight me on seeing you — no chance that I’d cross paths with myself. He wouldn’t have been able to stop me, mind you. But he’s definitely the better pilot, so I’m glad he was on board.
I’m getting away from myself. It’s hard to remember a time when you didn’t just instinctively know what I was thinking. It’s felt a little like you’ve just known me my whole life, the way we’ve always been in sync. Let me start from the beginning, just rip the bandaid off…
Or the “Timeless” AU you never knew you needed. Submitted as part of the Chopped Challenge: Round 2.
3rd Place Kiss to keep cover/keep a secret Trope, and 2nd Place Reunion Trope Winner.

inconceivable (Rated T) [Bellamy/Clarke] by @kindclaws
Summary: The first touch of his fingers on her wrists makes her whole body shiver. She’s so painfully aware of him being just behind her, of the wonder and the impossibility of his existence here, that she has to remind herself to keep breathing as he slowly picks apart the knots binding her hands together. “If I turn around, will you be gone?” she murmurs. “Is this a bad dream? Will you be dead again when I wake up?”
“I’m real,” he says softly, and finally the last knot falls away and her hands are free.
It’s practically inconceivable.
(Chopped 3 presents: The Princess Bride. In space, bitches.)

Look at you getting so big.”
“Are you talking to the plants again?”
Murphy grins as he turns to face Raven. “I don’t know why you’re surprised. I always talk to the plants. Why do you think they grow so well?”
“They’re plants, Murphy.” Raven raises an eyebrow as she stares at him.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t true.”
