Ember Days: The 1st Wednesday, Friday & Saturday after ‘Lucy, Ashes, Dove and Cross’
The term ‘Ember Days‘ find its origin in the Latin Quatuor Tempora (‘four times’). Ember Days are observed  on the successive Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at the beginning of the four seasons of the year and are an ancient practise instituted by the Church to thank God for blessings received and to implore further graces for the season ahead. They are intended to thank God for the gifts of nature, to teach men to make use of them in moderation and to assist those in need.
Ember Days are days of fasting and abstinence and fall annually after “Lucy, Ashes, Dove, and Cross“:
• December 13 (St. Lucia, V.M.) • Ash Wednesday • Whitsunday (Pentecost) • September 14 (Exaltation of the Holy Cross)
From Blessed be God: A Complete Catholic Prayer Book (pp.234-5): “Wednesday, Friday and Saturday were days of particular devotion in the early Church: Wednesday as recalling the betrayal of our Lord, and Friday in memory of His Passion, Saturday was later added to these days of prayer and penance as a continuation of Friday, and as far back as the second century they were set apart as Stational days, that is, as days of special religious service and fasting.”
The origins of Ember Days date from the ancient Church (at least the fifth century) and the modern format was arranged and prescribed by Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085).
As the dismantling, deconstruction and open disregard for the practise of the authentic, orthodox Catholic Faith took hold after Vatican II, veiled in stratagems of ambiguity and seeded generationally, the observance of Ember and Rogation Days were among the early casualties.
And on that note, and bearing in mind that God sends His people the priests that they deserve – some say on a personal, rather than purely societal, basis – following the extract from Jeremiah 3: 14-15 below, are some prayers for Ember Days.
“Return, O ye revolting children, saith the Lord: for I am your husband: and I will take you, one of a city, and two of a kindred, … I will give you pastors according to my own heart, and they shall feed you with knowledge and doctrine.” (Jeremiah 3: 14-15)
Ember Day Prayers
ANT. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all He hath done for thee.
V/. Lord, Thou hast been our refuge. R/. From generation to generation.
Let us pray. GRANT, we beseech Thee, almighty God, that as year by year we devoutly keep these holy observances, we may be pleasing to Thee both in body and soul. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
In Honour of Christ’s Betrayal and Passion
O GOD, Who to redeem the world didst vouchsafe to be born amongst men, to be circumcised, rejected by the Jews, betrayed by the traitor Judas with a kiss, to be bound with cords, and as an innocent lamb to be led to the slaughter; Who didst suffer Thyself to be shamelessly exposed to the gaze of Annas, Caiphus, Pilate and Herod; to be accused by false witnesses, tormented by scourges and insults, crowned with thorns, smitten with blows, defiled with spittings, to have Thy divine countenance covered, to be struck with a reed, to be stripped of Thy clothes, nailed to and raised high upon a Cross between two thieves, to be given gall and vinegar to drink, and then pierced with a lance; do Thou, O LORD, by these most sacred sufferings, which I, unworthy as I am, yet dare to contemplate, by Thy holy Cross and by Thy bitter Death, free me from the pains of hell, and vouchsafe to bring me to Paradise, whither Thou didst lead the thief who was crucified with Thee, my Jesus, Who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest, God forever and ever. Amen.
5x Pater Noster … Ave Maria … Gloria Patri … (Pre-1968 Indulgence of 3 years)
Prayer for God’s Blessing on Our Labours
O LORD, graciously look down upon Thy servants and upon the work of their hands, and do Thou, Who givest food to every creature, bless and preserve the fruits of the earth, that the needy may be filled with good things and that all may praise the glory of Thy bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
For Vocations to the Priesthood
ANT. Why stand ye all the day idle, go ye into my vineyard.
V/. Ask the Lord of the harvest. R/. That He send labourers into His vineyard.
Let us pray. GOD, Who willest not the death of the sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live; grant, by the intercession of blessed Mary Ever-Virgin and of all the saints, labourers for Thy Church, fellow labourers with Christ, to spend and consume themselves for souls. Through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, Who livest and reignest with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. (Pre-1968 Indulgence of 3 years)

Psalm 102
Benedic, anima. Thanksgiving to God for His mercies. [1] FOR DAVID himself.
Bless the Lord, O my soul: and let all that is within me bless his holy name. [2] Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all he hath done for thee. [3] Who forgiveth all thy iniquities: who healeth all thy diseases. [4] Who redeemeth thy life from destruction: who crowneth thee with mercy and compassion. [5] Who satisfieth thy desire with good things: thy youth shall be renewed like the eagle’s.
.[6] The Lord doth mercies, and judgment for all that suffer wrong. [7] He hath made his ways known to Moses: his wills to the children of Israel. [8] The Lord is compassionate and merciful: longsuffering and plenteous in mercy. [9] He will not always be angry: nor will he threaten for ever. [10] He hath not dealt with us according to our sins: nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
.[11] For according to the height of the heaven above the earth: he hath strengthened his mercy towards them that fear him. [12] As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our iniquities from us. [13] As a father hath compassion on his children, so hath the Lord compassion on them that fear him: [14] For he knoweth our frame. He remembereth that we are dust: [15] Man’s days are as grass, as the flower of the field so shall he flourish.
.[16] For the spirit shall pass in him, and he shall not be: and he shall know his place no more. [17] But the mercy of the Lord is from eternity and unto eternity upon them that fear him: And his justice unto children’s children, [18] To such as keep his covenant, And are mindful of his commandments to do them. [19] The Lord hath prepared his throne in heaven: and his kingdom shall rule over all. [20] Bless the Lord, all ye his angels: you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word, hearkening to the voice of his orders.
.[21] Bless the Lord, all ye his hosts: you ministers of his that do his will. [22] Bless the Lord, all his works: in every place of his dominion, O my soul, bless thou the Lord.
Gloria Patri …

it’s lillard time.
portland, day 3.
for those of you just tuning in, i woke up on my third day in portland in the midst of a record high. i’m not sure i even remember most of that morning, especially having to recount it a week later, but i’ll try my best.
our first stop was at the portland saturday market, which, as is obvious from its name, only happens on saturdays. it’s basically a public market filled with art merchants, food vendors, and local ware curators located in the middle of tom mccall waterfront park.
Tumblr media
(LOOK AT THAT. saturday was probably the nicest day, weather-wise. but don’t let this view fool you. it was still bitingly cold. the weather combined with the time of morning we were out reminded me of passing out thanksgiving turkeys at the christian help center, of all things. BUT I DIGRESS. ENJOY THIS VIEW AND IGNORE MY RAMBLING.)
while perusing the market i found myself drawn to the aroma of food in the air. the allure of warm food in my stomach on such a cold morning was enough to compel me to buy three very modestly sized pork buns for $7. they were good, but i’ll go out on a limb and say buns are not a strong suit in portland. but they did keep my belly decently warm, so in a way i was fully satisfied.
among other things i did at the portland saturday market:
tried an elephant ear for the first time. so, hi folks. i’ve tried an elephant ear before. (it was basically as if a bitso-bitso got run over by a steamroller. i’d imagine it tastes even better with coffee.)
was finally able to call myself the proud owner of a tapestry. i have no idea what use i’ll get out of it but it’ll most likely accompany me on many a beach trip because of how small it folds up. also got it for $20 when most of the ones i’ve seen on etsy are like $40+, and it didn’t have an offensive smell that took 2 days to air out. win-win-win.
bought a super durable canvas tote bag for like $8. like, it has those handles that feel super reinforced as opposed to being the same material as the bag itself. totally worth it considering i almost bought a very similar bag for $24 the day before.
Tumblr media
on the way back to the car, i knew i had to get a picture of this sign. it’s one of those things that seems quintessentially portland but i never really see anyone actually do. which sucks, cause it actually looks pretty cool! initially i’d thought i had to walk much farther to find it, but there it was, right over my head. unless there’s more than one of these or something.
Tumblr media
(one of the several pendleton stores in oregon. i’m still reeling from the regret of not taking more advantage of the lack of sales tax.)
after leaving the market, we headed a few blocks down to SW adler for lunch. there is a whole block (and then some) over on adler that is literally just food carts and it fucking blew my mind how many there were! we went because my best friend had wanted to try bing mi, a food cart located on the block that sells jianbing. over a week later, i still regret not buying my own (although i am looking it up now and THERE IS JIANBING IN SAN FRANCISCO. despite looking slightly gentrified and also in spite of the 71/100 health rating yikes it does seem pretty good). instead i opted for a lamb gyro from aybla grill around the corner, which was just as good, and which i am now craving again. i was almost frustrated by the number of options that were available on that block simply because my indecisive ass was so overwhelmed by it all.
we walked to pendleton after, which was right down the street. I SWEAR, WHEN I WALKED IN, IT FELT LIKE I WAS IN HEAVEN. i’m such a slut for flannels and wool sweaters and shit like that. i walked out with a $100 blanket and two pairs of socks and i have no regrets, except that i didn’t buy a sweater i had been eyeing and now the only way i can get it is if i buy it online/in california WITH TAX (the horror) or i drive back to oregon to buy it (no lie, something my best friend actually suggested. she even calculated that we are a 5 hour drive from the closest pendleton to the oregon border).
after briefly losing one of our crew in a nordstrom we set out for multnomah falls. we drove about 35 miles out only to discover that ALL OF THE FALLS ARE CLOSED. WHAT. literally every exit to any of the waterfalls was blocked off and we actually drove maybe an extra 8 miles before we could turn around. apparently a string of wildfires blazed through the area just a month before, and everything had been closed since then. although on the way back, we ended up stopping by a vista point overlooking the columbia river that had a pretty phenomenal view, which made up for it.
Tumblr media
(view from the freeway of mt hood on the way to multnomah falls, before we knew EVERYTHING WAS CLOSED.)
Tumblr media
(our pit stop on the way back to portland, featuring the columbia river. also washington.)
our final stop was sauvie island for one of the more niche things portland has to offer: a corn mazed shaped like damian lillard’s head. it was entirely my idea to go here and i was excited as a child on christmas up until the point where we hit ungodly traffic getting onto the island. it took us maybe an additional 30 or more minutes to the farm.
Tumblr media
(one friend was adamant about following this map. another friend was adamant about not following this map. i was gravely concerned we would legitimately be forever ensconced in damian lillard’s head where the only dimension that exists is lillard time.)
the maze was muddy as hell. i had forgone comfort that day for stylishness and i still haven’t given the boots i used a proper wash. seriously, that shit was muddy. it reminded me of a time in high school that i got my foot trapped in mud and the mud had ripped my shoe from my foot. in hindsight, i was very fortunate that my shoes came up around my ankles in that maze.
we were out in about 45 minutes because my best friend had actually been following the map the whole time and was able to guide us out. that includes the time we took gallivanting in the cornstalks taking pictures and polaroids like the gleeful tourists we were. so i’d say we did a pretty impressive job.
we ended the night with sushi at a small izakaya on the outskirts of town. i’ve already forgotten the name of the place but it was in a suburb called hillsboro. to commemorate the culmination of our mini-vacation, we stocked up on sushi and sake. i regrettably had to partake in finishing a 720 ml sake bottle with two other people and had also made the mistake of ordering my own cocktail. like, drinking small cups of sake that night made me realize i have lost all capability to drink the way i did in college. needless to say i felt old, only being able to handle half a shot of sake at a time while the others downed their cups with little effort. sure, i was chasing those shots down with a moscow mule, but still.
in the end my best friend drank most of the bottle and drunkenly declared she would pay for our entire dinner. (she did.)
(she also took the empty, 720 ml sake bottle home and it is on her kitchen counter as i type this.)
Tumblr media
(the face of a grateful man.)
i think i had once again become more drunk than the others, despite all my best efforts to not appear an alcoholic. realizing we were maybe 30 miles west of where our airbnb was, we paid and forged through the cold back to our car. after a pit stop in the middle of nowhere to use the gas station bathroom and stock up on convenience store snacks, we arrived back at our airbnb, completely exhausted.
we left for the airport around 7 the next morning for a 9 am flight. everything went fairly smoothly, save for my friend’s luggage being searched by TSA. they’d ended up confiscating the bug spray he’d left in his backpack from our recent camping trip, but somehow he was let off the hook for traveling through TSA with his stolen/bought hot sauces. we bought one more round of stumptown coffee and then waited to board our plane.
Tumblr media
(bye bye, oregon!)
of course, when we got back to san francisco it was HOT. i had worn a jacket throughout the plane ride, and it was unbearable to keep on in san francisco. i would happily go back to oregon if it meant i could get away from the late-october heat waves and get to have rain all the time. i have a lot of bay area pride but it’s tough to compete with a place with no sales tax, significantly less traffic, and properly defined weather seasons.
shit, i’d even redo this trip just so i could actually take pictures of my food.
until next time, portland!
