Koei Warriors Retrospective Part 6: Samurai Warriors 1 Spinoffs (State of War/Pachislot)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Samurai Warriors State of War (激・戦国無双) Platforms: PSP Release dates: Japan: 8 December 2005 USA: 7 March 2006 Europe: 24 March 2006
Like Dynasty Warriors before it, Samurai Warriors has also released spinoffs that explore new concepts or take advantage of the technology in new consoles. The amount of spinoffs that Koei and Koei Tecmo released can feel daunting and wasteful, but the purpose of this series is to determine their merits and call out their faults.
With that in mind, let's continue with the two spinoffs for Samurai Warriors 1.
Samurai Warriors State of War
Like Dynasty Warriors before it, Samurai Warriors has its own spinoff for the PSP called State of War, or Geki Sengoku Musou in Japanese.
The Story Modes for each character vary depending on the character, though they do share scenarios most of the time and some characters do have their own scenarios. All characters from Xtreme Legends are featured and are split into three groups, namely the Oda, the Eastern Warriors and the Western Warriors. The Tokugawa are kind of unique as they only share one scenario with the Eastern Warriors instead of two.
Unlike the Dynasty Warriors PSP game, stages are in a grid format rather than an area format. Each enemy space you go to will have a mission, whether it is to defeat enemy unit leaders, defeat as many enemies as possible, or preventing enemy spies from causing a mutiny among others. At the end of the mission, you will get an A/B/C rating that will allow you to move 1 to 3 spaces depending on what you get.
Throughout the stage, you can obtain charms from defeating enemy officers or passing chests. These charms can affect enemies or benefit your allies. Some of them can take effect in a wider area and some of them continue to be effective as long as you have them. Aside from these battle charms, you can also earn tactic charms that can open gates and dams or deactivate cannons.
During the battle, you can obtain weapons like you would in the vanilla game. You can also obtain subofficers that give you stat buffs, abilities or charms from the start of the battle (subofficers don't cost anything, but you can only have one playable/Musou subofficer). The Level 4 weapons are unlockable on Hard or Chaos difficulties. Skills are also obtained when you level up or defeat certain officers in Story Mode.
Characters from Dynasty Warriors 4 also appear as subofficers (like how the Samurai Warriors characters appeared in the Dynasty Warriors PSP game) and in the final Ultimate Warriors story. It's pretty interesting to see the beginnings of a concept that would become a mainstay in the future.
Like the Dynasty Warriors PSP game before it, State of War is another great adaptation of the main Samurai Warriors game, showing how you don't necessarily need to fully adapt the main game to provide a fun experience on the go.
Samurai Warriors Pachislot (Pachislot Sengoku Musou)
Tumblr media
Pachislot Sengoku Musou (パチスロ戦国無双) Platforms: PS3 Release dates: Japan: 6 September 2007
Imagine going down the pub and seeing this among the pokies. Slot machines based on licenced franchises are not a new thing, but I don't pay much attention to them, whether I'm at the casino or at the pub, because I'm not much of a gambling person when it comes to money. My dad used to buy lottery tickets sometimes when I was little, but he doesn't do it anymore now. Scratchie tickets are a rare occurrence, but even then they're gifts from his boss.
Yamasa Entertainment has licenced Koei's IP to make pachislots of the first three Samurai Warriors games, but only the first one was made into a PS3 game in 2007 for the Yamasa Digital Slot World series (because adapting further sequels would be more of the same anyway). As such, this allows the first four generations of Samurai Warriors games to be represented on the PlayStation 3 (Yes, Warriors Orochi exists, but I'll get to that later). For a time I wasn't able to play it until I realised that I had to decrypt the ISO, after which I managed to get it working. Same goes for a few other games that I downloaded for the sake of it.
Look, this game is just a simulation of the actual game running inside a simulation of the pachislot machine. You use the controller to enter credits, start the reels and stop each individual one. Pressing Select allows you to switch the camera focus between the reels and the screen where all the CGs are displayed, while pressing L3 switches you into a free camera mode.
The main characters playable in this are Yukimura, Keiji and Hanzō, with others appearing in events. You can view the CG loops and events for the three of them in the Museum.
Simulation Mode is just as what it says on the tin. It allows you to set the frequency chance multiplier for bonuses so that they can appear more often. Practice Mode allows you to simulate a machine in a shop that has been open X out of Y hours, accumulating simulated playtime from previous plays. I think this sets a benchmark for up to 6 settings in Simulation Mode but I'm not even sure what it even does. You can activate the Auto Play so you don't have to do much.
There are three modes to be played in Challenge Mode; there is Medal Attack, where you play to see how many medals you get in 300 plays; Sengoku Rush Attack, where you play to see how long you can keep the Sengoku Rush replay sequence going for; and Bonus Attack, where you have 40 plays in the Big Bonus Game to see how many times you can fill your Musou gauge, or rather, trigger the minigame event with the Strike Ninja and beat him by getting a bonus reel, namely a kanji symbol in each reel. I have no idea what "Bell Musou Gauge" even is.
Yeah look, this isn't something I'm going to be that serious in reviewing. If I can play something to try it out I'll definitely do it, but if I can't enjoy it properly for whatever reason then I'm just going to talk about it a little and move on. This game was a thing and that's it.
We're sailing back to China next time as we get into the pinnacle of classic era Koei Warriors with Dynasty Warriors 5.

ERO New York Arrests Guatemalan Child Predator
Tumblr media
A Vigilant Effort to Uphold Community Safety
In a significant and noteworthy enforcement action, the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) New York City's Newburgh suboffice successfully apprehended a Guatemalan citizen, highlighting a strong commitment to child safety and public security. Convicted of sexually abusing a child, this operation underscores the ongoing, relentless commitment of U.S. immigration authorities to protect the most vulnerable populations and maintain the highest standards of public safety in our communities.
Targeted Arrest Ensures Justice and Community Protection
On the 3rd of January, ERO officers, in a meticulously planned and executed operation in Spring Valley, New York, arrested a 22-year-old Guatemalan man. This individual, previously convicted by the Rockland County Court for first-degree sex abuse involving a child under the age of 11 years old, represents a stark and serious violation of both U.S. immigration laws and fundamental moral standards. The arrest is a clear message to those who threaten community safety.   The Process and Charges Explained in Detail Following his apprehension, the Guatemalan national faced serious charges of violating the Immigration and Nationality Act. This includes his unlawful entry into the United States and being convicted of a crime of moral turpitude. Currently held without bond, he is now awaiting removal proceedings, ensuring that he faces the full consequences of his unlawful actions and providing a measure of justice to the affected community.
ERO's Unwavering Commitment to Community Safety
Kenneth Genalo, ERO New York City Field Office Director, emphasized the organization's unwavering dedication to apprehending individuals who commit heinous acts against vulnerable populations. This arrest serves as a testament to ERO's resolve in safeguarding communities from such predators, demonstrating their relentless pursuit of justice and protection for all residents.
Background of the Convicted Individual and the Impact of His Actions
The apprehended individual admitted to illegally entering the United States near Arizona back in August 2018. His criminal history, particularly marked by the 2021 conviction for sexual contact with a minor, led to a ten-year probation sentence. This underscores the severity of his actions and the importance of actively pursuing such individuals for justice, ensuring accountability for their actions within the U.S. legal system.   Legal Process and ERO's Role in Upholding Justice Individuals placed in removal proceedings are entitled to due process under federal immigration judges. The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), an agency within the Department of Justice, oversees these proceedings with a commitment to fairness and justice. Immigration judges make decisions based on the merits of each individual case, while ICE officers are responsible for enforcing these removal orders, playing a critical role in the U.S. justice system and immigration enforcement.
Understanding ERO's Mission and Its Impact on National Safety
As a key component of ICE, ERO's mission extends far beyond arrests. It includes the comprehensive management of detained and non-detained individuals and the repatriation of noncitizens with final removal orders. With over 7,700 personnel and a widespread presence across the U.S. and internationally, ERO plays a pivotal and crucial role in upholding immigration laws, protecting public safety, and ensuring the integrity of immigration processes.   Sources: THX News & US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. PHILADELPHIA — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Philadelphia Field Office removed an unlawfully present noncitizen foreign fugitive on Nov. 9.Gustavo Guadalupe Gonzalez Jimenez, 26, was wanted in Mexico for negligent homicide and injuries. Gonzalez was flown from Alexandria International Airport to Valley International Airport, Harlingen, Texas, on a flight coordinated by ICE’s Air Operations Unit. ERO Harlingen then transported Gonzalez via ground transportation to the Matamoros Port of Entry. Upon arrival at the port of entry, ERO turned Gonzalez over to Mexican authorities who took him into custody on a warrant for criminal homicide. “Dangerous criminals such as Mr. Gonzalez seek to take advantage of our systems and the generosity of the American people in order to avoid prosecution for their crimes,” said David C. O’Neill, Acting Field Office Director in charge of ERO’s Philadelphia office. “The men and women of ERO are here to ensure that they are returned to their country to face justice.” Gonzales illegally entered the U.S. at an unknown location without inspection or admission by an immigration official. On Jan. 20, 2003, U.S. Border Patrol arrested Gonzalez near Jacumba, California. The next day, USBP allowed him to voluntarily return to Mexico. Gonzalez entered the U.S. illegally three more times and each time was arrested, released and allowed to voluntarily return to Mexico. Once again, on an unknown date and at an unknown location, Gonzalez unlawfully reentered the United States without inspection or admission by an immigration official. On April 30, 2022, the Pennsylvania State Police arrested Gonzalez in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for driving under the influence and traffic offenses. These charges remain pending. On July 18, ERO Philadelphia arrested Gonzalez at the Lancaster County Probation Office in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. On the same date, ERO served Gonzalez a Notice to Appear, charging inadmissibility pursuant to the Immigration and Nationality Act as a noncitizen present in the United States without being admitted or paroled. On July 28, an immigration judge in Cleveland granted Gonzalez bond. On Aug. 1, the ICE Assistant Attaché for Removals in Mexico City notified ERO Philadelphia that Gonzalez had an active arrest warrant in Mexico City, Mexico for criminal homicide. On Aug. 3, ERO Philadelphia canceled Gonzalez’s bond and arrested him at the ERO Philadelphia, York suboffice and transferred him to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center for removal proceedings. On Aug, 31, an immigration judge ordered Gonzalez removed to Mexico. Gonzalez waived his right to appeal. Members of the public who have information about foreign fugitives are urged to contact ICE by calling the ICE Tip Line at 866-DHS-2-ICE or internationally at 001-1802-872-6199. They can also file a tip online by completing ICE’s online tip form. Enforcement and Removal Operations is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that protects the homeland through the arrest and removal of those within the United States who undermine the safety of our communities and the integrity of our immigration laws. Immigration enforcement is the largest single area of responsibility for ERO, and is a critical component of the overall safety, security and well-being of our nation. ERO manages all aspects of the immigration enforcement process, including identification and arrest, detention, bond management, supervised release, as well as transportation and removal. In addition, ERO repatriates noncitizens ordered removed from the U.S. to more than 170 countries around the world. ERO and its workforce are responsible for managing a safe, orderly and humane immigration enforcement process.

Delayed FanFic Friday: Mission on Mimban 6 of 12
Previous Installments
Introduction, One, Two, Three, Four, Five,
What Happens in the Chapter
We have made it to Chapter Six. This novel only has twelve chapters, so normally I'd say we would find the midpoint (the centerpiece of your entire story which must feature a revelation that gives your protagonist new insight into the plot and allows him to shift from the reaction of the first half of the story and into action in the second half How to Structure Your Story's Outline (How to Outline for NaNoWriMo Pt. 7)) in this chapter. But pacing has been dragging, so I make no promises of finding it here.
Luke and Leia are escorted to the maximum security holding cell by a subofficer and some stormtroopers. Luke takes the time before reaching the cell to complain about the Empire being too cheap to build a proper headquarters. Leia picks up on that, and gets offended that this building was a temple turned into offices and a prison. They're shoved into the cell with angled bars "as big around as Luke forearm" and the Imperials leave, laughing at their trepidation. The piles of fur wake up. Leia is frightened of the huge creature that stands up, but Luke is more surprised and greets the Yuzzem in what he knows of their language. Hin and Kee are delighted to make friends with a human who understands them. They had gotten themselves roped into Imperial enslavement and ended up on Mimban, protested their treatment, and only got documents waved in their faces and jokes made of them. So they got drunk, took the equipment, and started filling in the mine. Grammel didn't have them shot because they each do the work of three men and they were drunk.
Grammel comes down with several stormtroopers, visibly relieved that the Yuzzem have not torn Luke and Leia apart. If everyone is getting along, there's no reason to move them out of the safest cell they have. Grammel lets slip that an Imperial Governor has taken an interest in them, and Leia has a panic attack from her experience on the Death Star. Grammel recognizes that she has undergone Imperial interrogation before, but Luke won't tell them who they really are. Grammel pitches a fit and threatens Leia, and Kee grabs Grammel by the throat. He takes a stun blast to the side which scorches his fur and Hin attacks the bars when he can't reach Grammel. Unfortunately, the bars hold. Grammel insults the Yuzzem while he speaks to Luke. Hin hocks a well-aimed loogie and it hits Grammel on the back of the neck.
Hin comes back to Luke and Leia after Grammel leaves. Leia fainted from the fear of going through interrogation again. She comes to and apologizes for losing control. Luke promises she won't undergo another session. Food comes through a hole in the stone walls rather than the barred door. After eating, Luke finally takes a look around with a mind of how to break the hell out. The cell entry control is a "recessed photo-sensitive switch" down the corridor out of arms-reach of everyone in the cell. Once Luke decides that's the weak point of the security system, Halla confirms it from the cell window.
Once they have caught up on what Grammel now knows and Hin and Kee have offered to get them out of the building if Halla breaks them out of the cell, Halla uses the Force to levitate one of the food trays to cover the switch. She can't make it all the way and implores Luke to help her. He does and Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice gives him pointers. They get the cell door open, Hin and Kee take off with Leia nearly right behind them, while Luke gets directions on where to meet the droids and Halla once they're outside. Leia drags Luke out of the cell, and then they have to stop rampaging Yuzzem. They get weapons, Kee destroys the communications center, Hin presents Luke with his lightsaber, and they finally bolt for the main entrance.
What I Liked
I'm not pleased with Leia getting indignant over the misuse of architecture and not indignant over the abuse of the Mimbanites, but it leads to a great dig at an Imperial.
"I am told this mining is an expensive venture. The Empire is smart enough to save where it is able," he concluded with pride.
"That probably extends to your pay and retirement benefits," the Princess ventured maliciously.
Yes, I must find a way to keep that in. Despite the Rebels having no room to talk about using abandoned temples as headquarters.
I adore Hin and Kee's drunken plan to get back at the Imperials, fill in the mine. It had no chance and they were stopped, but it has symmetry. It also makes me think these two are actually younger than Luke and Leia, teenagers for their species rather than young adults.
Halla is a bad-ass. To get back in touch with her new partners, she stood "on a ledge about ten centimeters wide, over a forty-meter-deep trench" after passing a barrier that "would detect any energy weapons or explosives". We're not told how high up the ziggurat the window is.
The narration does not tell us the voice speaking to Luke is Ben, but really who else could it be?
Luke shut his own eyes and tried to concentrate only on the tray, ignoring the cell, the Princess, everything but that floating flat plane of formed metal. A familiar voice seemed to remind him of something.
"Don't try so hard, Luke," the voice said. "Remember how I taught you. Relax, relax, let the Force work through you. Don't try to force the Force."
That voice is not coming from Halla; she's too busy concentrating on the tray. And I would think you'd need some awareness of the surroundings in order to successfully levitate an object. This won't do them any good if the tray goes against the wall and doesn't cover the photo-sensor cell.
Leia closes the bars again and slips the tray back inside to make any of the stormtroopers following them nervous over what they are capable of.
"Decommissioned troopers" is a euphemism for dead stormtroopers. I don't know why they thought that was better, since the phrase comes up after Luke and Leia catch up to the Yuzzem and find Hin using a droid as a club to beat a soldier to a pulp and both were "coming apart at roughly the same rate."
What I Found Problematic
Subofficer is not given a rank, so I'm assuming he gets a snazzy Imperial uniform and not stormtrooper armor like the chatty sergeant of the last two chapters (who is also referred to as a noncom which means a noncommissioned officer). I don't see why we had to change characters here or why his rank isn't given. Thirteen pages later we learn the subofficer's name is Puddra. Maybe he is in charge of the prison? That makes sense, but why didn't we get his name when he was introduced?
I admit it's probably due to the current political climate and journalists being too feckless to actually name what things are, but I find myself with no patience for weasley words chosen by Foster or put in the mouths of the characters. "They signed themselves into--well, I guess you couldn't call it slavery, but indentured servitude is too polite a term." NAME WHAT IT IS! Both of these terms have definitions and differences. Commit to what happened to these characters. That the Imperials lied to them is a given, both of these option (or option number three) are equally horrific and worth revolting over when the Imperials are the ones in power, so make a damn decision and say what it is! And if someone in Editorial is kicking a fuss about slavery in this book, this isn't the way to have it but not have it too. You are not fooling anyone, Foster.
The trained diplomat is frightened by tall, furry aliens. I could accept that the trained diplomat is nervous and really wants the protocol droid that knows over six million forms of communication present now to help her with a species she doesn't know. I'm having a harder time with the fear from Princess Leia "Will someone get this walking carpet out of my way?" Organa, Senator of Alderaan.
We have a brief moment of regret for the choices they have made on this planet.
"If we hadn't lost control of ourselves back in front of the tavern, we wouldn't have attracted the attention of those miners. We wouldn't be here now. It's my fault."
He put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Come on, Leia... Princess. This mess was nobody's fault. Besides, it's fun losing control once in a while."
No, no, no, no, no. This mess is equally BOTH your faults for being idiots on an IMPERIAL CONTROLLED WORLD. Leia was immature by kicking Luke into the mud, Luke was equally immature pulling her into the mud, and you both have bounties on your heads. Yes, you should take some time to reflect just how badly you screwed up then and how badly you are screwing up NOW. What the hell are you doing dropping titles and Rebellion affiliations where the cell security can pick it up?!
"You grinning travesty of a man." That is a weak-ass insult, Grammel. I expected better of an Imperial who just threatened to dismember the woman that Governor Essada was interested in. The Yuzzem are not men.
How does Hin recognize the lightsaber as Luke's? Does it carry Luke's scent? Luke hasn't called himself a Jedi as far as we know.
What Changes in My Fic
Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Alien Species by Ann Margaret Lewis had a better reason for Luke knowing Yuzz: a Yuzzem lived in Anchorhead and Luke made friends with him. This is the backstory reason I'm going with rather than "I studied a lot of worlds back on Tatooine" reason Foster came up with.
Hin and Kee's backstory won't change much except I'm going with option three: alien trafficking. These two Yuzzem kids were approached and promised a well paying job, a chance to send credits back home which probably isn't doing so great under Imperial rule. Then they get to Mimban and they are paid, but everything is being docked from their paychecks. The flight to Mimban, their return flight home whenever they fulfill their contract, food, lodging, any equipment they break because it's designed for humans not Yuzzem until there is nothing left to save. They are free to leave once their contract is fulfilled or they pay to get out of it. Hah, hah, you can't pay. There you go, exploitation without slavery.
I have to decide on Puddra's rank, but I'm making him the ranking officer over the prisoners like a warden.
Overall, the prison break is decent, if a bit talky in spots. My problem is there would be less for Halla to do because Luke and Mara both are in training and levitating the tray should occur to them without outside prompting. Also, I'm not sure this qualifies as the midpoint but I'm putting it there unless a later scene makes a more compelling case.
Plot events time. Helping Writers Become Authors further explains this breakdown.
Hook 1% mark = Crashing onto Mimban
Set-up 1% - 12%
Inciting Event 12% mark = Finding the Imperial mining outpost
Build-up 12% - 25%
1st Plot Point 25% mark = Luke and Leia agree to find the Kaiburr crystal with Halla
Reaction to 1st Plot Point 25% - 37%
1st Pinch Point 37% mark = Meeting with Grammel
Realization 37% - 50%
Midpoint or 2nd Plot Point 50% mark = Prison break

Madeleine Tchabi Moumouni, Head of UNHCR’s suboffice in Gbadolite Democratic Reblic.of Cnngo, has one question to raise as main concern. “During the past weeks, I was in the North of DRC to oversee the registration and needs assessment of refugees who fled violence and insecurity in CAR. last year uni student, rant
In the span of 9 months working on my thesis, I haven’t finished it. Not the protocol. Had to change topics several times. Change supervisor. And oh boy, working with people is kinda difficult sometimes.
I really have no idea why my supervisor sent me a smile emoji while denounced me. Vague idea why my supervisor didn’t respond to my text for over 2 months. At that time, I only need their signature, yeah I’ve asking it several times.
Along the journey I met two seniors, who was also working with their graduate’s thesis. We went places, rural ones, armed with google and google map, to find something we didn’t really know. Contacting people and visiting goverment’s suboffice just to find a farmer, the spesific farmer who harvests the spesific plant. We sat in front of local stores in the mid of the rain to wait for the other senior. Then after we got the stuff, went back with -+20kgs additional weight.
The next days, we traveled again to the next city where these material are going to be processed. What a misfortune that one of the staff there scammed me to pay lots of money for a simple service, I have no option because we don’t know places there. Not only that, I had to manually pluck out the leaves from the twigs. And I too have no idea how much that I need. I was just following the command from my supervisor which at that time, only has vague idea and using rough estimation. My senior had to leave to do something, so I continue by myself. Some lecturers and pupils passed by, some commenting if there’s new “market” here, some suggesting that they’re more than enough, it seemed. I don’t know, my sup ordered to do all. I called my friend who is currently studying on that uni to accompany me. She came when I’m done. We went for lunch.
Later, after I confirmed to senior#3 who have conducted similar research, the estimate amount was for 4-5 experiments, So practically I have so much much excess. And I’ve spent so much money on that.
Later again, COVID-19 strikes, and that project was abandoned. Including the draft I’ve cried about, not really knowing the topic and minimum referencea available. It was all new and bizzare that I had to ask on an international group about it. So yeah, it basically just done. :-) devastated but glad, not having to spend any more money.
god, why i start telling the entire story TT
it’s just the first part tho
I’m currently waiting again for respond.
